Scoot aims to be Zipcar of electric scooters, launches in SF
Aiming to be the Zipcar of electric scooters, Scoot Networks has officially launched in San Francisco after months of beta testing. Ideal for areas with problematic parking, the Chinese-made scooters are 100 percent electric with a 20Ah SLA battery each, and there's even a dock built into the dash to charge most Android or iPhone models. With a screaming top speed of 30 miles per hour, they're obviously meant for short trips and not for the highway. It costs $10 to sign up, $5 per month, then $5 per hour. You can also get a $10 per day deal or a $19 per month option that includes three workdays or overnights. Even though you don't need a motorcycle license to rent one, the company does offer tutorials to get newbies comfortable with the vehicles. If you do have a license, you can opt for the $185 a month plan that lets you get your own personal scooter. A potential issue is that the battery on the electric scooter only lasts around 20 to 30 miles, but San Francisco might have enough EV-friendly parking spots to make that less of a problem. You can watch the company's promo video after the break.Continue reading Scoot aims to be Zipcar of electric scooters, launches in SFFiled under: TransportationScoot aims to be Zipcar of electric scooters, launches in SF originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 17:24:00 EDT. TweetDeck for the web slips in expanded tweets and header photos
TweetDeck is Twitter's professional desktop client, though you might not always know it given that the app is sometimes out of step with its more pedestrian siblings. Today, Twitter is presenting a unified front in a more timely fashion. The web versions of TweetDeck now show the expanded tweets and header photos that reached the iPad and mobile apps a week ago. No major surprises are waiting in the wings save for the absence of a matching update to the native Mac and Windows apps -- hopefully, that's a gap that closes soon.Filed under: InternetTweetDeck for the web slips in expanded tweets and header photos originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 17:03:00 EDT. ASUS teases Jelly Bean update coming to Transformer Pad Prime and Infinity within 72 hours
Oh, ASUS. While it was so forthcoming with an update to Jelly Bean for the Transformer Pad TF300, it has been shy about upgrading the tablet's higher-end cousins. The company must be coming out of its shell: it just posted a teaser for Jelly Bean updates coming to the Transformer Pad Prime TF201 (formerly the Eee Pad Transformer Prime) and the flagship Transformer Pad Infinity TF700. ASUS was initially hesitant to say more than that it would come "soon," but Technical Marketing Manager Gary Key has stepped in to confirm that North America will get the update within a surprisingly quick 72 hours. The only glaring omission is a matching refresh for the original Eee Pad Transformer to give veteran owners a little TLC.Filed under: TabletsASUS teases Jelly Bean update coming to Transformer Pad Prime and Infinity within 72 hours originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 16:45:00 EDT. FXI's Cotton Candy finally starts to ship, hopes your sugar rush remains (video)
Way back at CES, FXI's Cotton Candy was a sweet looking slice of Android and / or Linux mini-PC. Since then, the pendroid club has seen quite a few more join its number. However, if you were one of the faithful that got on-board with FXI's particular take on the form-factor early, then that little box of ARM Cortex A9 joy is finally available to buy. We've received word that pre-orders are now finally ready to be fulfilled, with early buyers getting developer versions. This of course means that you might pay a small price for such eager adoption, with a list of limitations including mixed video playback and streaming support, as well as potential issues with power from USB hosts. That said, we suspect that if you've been able to wait this long, these are small prices to pay, along with the $199 asking price, naturally. Give the source a whirl to get your teeth into one now. Overheating batteries put Chrysler plug-in hybrid testing on hold
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, ChryslerChrysler hasn't exactly been in a leadership role when it comes to, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Disbanding the ENVI group in 2009 sure didn't help. Plug-in vehicle development continued, though, but the company's PHEV's are now facing another obstacle: overheating. Fortunately, this hasn't meant battery fires, but the overheated battery systems mean that Chrysler is temporarily pulling 109 trucks and 23 minivans out of a fleet testing program. Three of the Ram 1500 pickups in a fleet of 109 equipped with plug-in hybrid powertrains were damaged when their prototype lithium-ion batteries overheated. No fire or injuries occurred, and the incidents took place when the trucks were unoccupied, Chrysler said. It was not known how long the test vehicles - deployed to 16 municipalities and utility companies in 20 states - would be sidelined The prototype batteries were supplied by Electrovaya, based in Mississauga, Ontario, near Toronto. During the sidelining of the test models, Chrysler engineers will be working on a "superior battery," said Michael Duhaime, Chrysler's global director of electrified powertrain propulsion systems. In the next phase of the testing, a different battery chemistry will be used, which Mayne said is normal in the product development process. Testing new technologies such as plug-in hybrids with fleets is helping automakers capture real-world data on performance and reliability. Toyota found this out before introducing the 2012 Prius Plug-in Hybrid through an extensive test-fleet program involving 125 early prototypes in the U.S. Input from participants assisted finalized engineering and improvement in features for the production model. No major problems like this overheating issue were revealed. The fleet of plug-in hybrid Ram 1500 pickup trucks and Chrysler Town & Country minivans have accumulated 1.3 million miles during road testing, Chrysler said. The tests are being funded jointly by the U.S. Department of Energy ($58 million) and Chrysler ($65.2 million). The minivans have gotten an average of 55 miles per gallon of gasoline in testing and the Ram 1500 pickups have gotten 37.4 mpg.Overheating batteries put Chrysler plug-in hybrid testing on hold originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 15:57:00 EST. Oculus Rift developer kits go up for regular pre-order, catch VR procrastinators
Anyone who's been wanting to make a game for the Oculus Rift headset, but hemmed and hawed during the Kickstarter run, now has a second chance. Oculus has kicked off its own pre-order campaign that offers the VR developer kit at the same $300 that it cost for the more proactive among us, or $345 for those beyond US borders. As an added incentive, the first 1,000 who pull the trigger still get a copy of Doom 3: BFG Edition to show what the Oculus Rift can do. Twiddling your thumbs will have cost at least a month -- these new kits won't ship until January -- but the pre-order still means a head start over competing developers that haven't yet seen the virtual light.Filed under: Displays, WearablesOculus Rift developer kits go up for regular pre-order, catch VR procrastinators originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 16:14:00 EDT. iPhone 5 swings through first round of Chinese approvals, may already have China Telecom onboard
Wireless device certifications can sometimes give away a little more of a company's game plan than intended. Case in point: a China Compulsory Certification for the iPhone 5. The expected A1429 variant has been given initial clearance on its way to China Unicom, but there's also a previously unseen, CDMA2000-based A1442 iPhone with a similar rubber stamp. With the iPhone 4S already on the market for a CDMA-only China Telecom, it doesn't take much to suggest that the A1442 represents Apple's taller, faster smartphone already prepared for the same carrier. Neither edition of the iPhone 5 is imminent without the equally important network and radio clearances. Getting the ball rolling on multiple variants so soon after the initial launch, however, raises the chance that we'll see the iPhone 5 on more than one Chinese provider faster than the iPhone 4S took to arrive the last time around.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileiPhone 5 swings through first round of Chinese approvals, may already have China Telecom onboard originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EDT. At long last, the illustrious Android ICS refresh can finally be enjoyed by proud owners of that AT&T-branded Xperia Ion. Naturally, this long-awaited update brings a slew of new features over to Sony's 4.6-inch handset, including an enhanced browser, offline reading mode, the beloved facial unlocking method first introduced with Ice Cream Sandwich and the promise of improvements in mobile hotspot / WiFi speeds. Additionally, AT&T says there are other tweaks in calendar and email that should, in theory, help you stay better organized, while the Maps and YouTube should also perform better "when rotating between portrait and landscape views." Apple Reportedly Ditched Google Maps Over Lack Of Turn-By-Turn Navigation
Apple and Google's Maps rift on iOS 6 was apparently caused by an inability by the two companies to see eye-to-eye on one key feature, turn-by-turn navigation. That's according to new information AllThingsD has uncovered from "multiple sources familiar with Apple's thinking." Other factors contributed to the split, but navigation was the straw that broke the camel's back, according to the report.

You never really know what to expect when two of the bigger names in tech join forces and announce something fresh. In some cases you may see an end result of things like that RAZR i, but when Dropbox and Facebook are involved, you can surely bet it has to do with sharing something with your pals -- and such is the case today. Dropbox announced earlier that it's now allowing folks to share files with their friends inside Facebook Groups, giving users the ability to instantly post anything from notes to videos with a couple of simple clicks. Of course, those on the other side will be able to like what you share, leave comments, as well as be updated automatically as soon as an edit has been made. At the moment, not everyone's seeing the changes just yet, though Dropbox has said it shouldn't be too long before most people can spot the new feature.Filed under: Internet, SoftwareDropbox teams up with Facebook to let folks share stuff within Groups originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 15:20:00 EDT. Reportedly called the Nissan Evalia Electric, the minivan will have the same powertrain as the Nissan Leaf, whose electric motor delivers 80 kw from its 24-kWh battery. Nissan hasn't given the minivan an estimated single-charge range but did say it will be able to be recharged to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes from a quick charger. The Japanese automaker has been testing the panel-van EV with delivery companies, most recently with FedEx. Nissan announced production plans for the e-NV200 panel van this past spring, saying that the first models would roll off Nissan's production line in Barcelona next year. Love Amazon's renowned two-day shipping? How about organic eats and other miscellaneous environment-friendly products? If so, then today's your very lucky day. Adding to the endless list of shopping sites it already owns, Amazon has just introduced Vine.com; a site which aims to be a one-stop web store for folks looking to snag anything from organic ingredients to beauty products like all-natural shaving oils and Kiss My Face foam soaps -- and yes, as we stated earlier, there's an option to get that speedy two-day delivery service. While chatting with Bits Blog, a Vine representative said the goal isn't "necessarily about saving the planet," but that his team does "feel the products are useful in that regard." Currently Vine.com is live in beta form, though that doesn't mean folks interested can't go browse around and order some goodies -- to do that, give the source link below a quick tap.Filed under: Misc, InternetAmazon launches Vine.com for shoppers who live life on the 'green' edge originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 15:03:00 EDT. AT&T outs U-verse Easy Remote app for iOS, uses voice and gestures to take control
Not that much time has passed since AT&T announced it was bringing Zuckerberg's social network right to your U-verse-equipped TV, and now those with an iOS device are in for yet another treat. The Rethink Possible company just outed its new Easy Remote application for Apple's mobile operating system, with the main feature being a Watson-powered one that lets U-verse users control their system via voice -- you know, things like picking a show to watch or even flipping through channels. That's not it, however, the app also brings other tidbits such as one-touch access to closed captioning and gesture-based commands. Unfortunately, AT&T's Easy Remote app is only available for iOS at the moment, though we can't imagine it'll be too long before the carrier launches one for folks on a different ecosystem. Either way, you can get a quick glimpse of the application right after the break, where a pretty edifying video awaits.Continue reading AT&T outs U-verse Easy Remote app for iOS, uses voice and gestures to take controlFiled under: Home Entertainment, Software, HDAT&T outs U-verse Easy Remote app for iOS, uses voice and gestures to take control originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 14:48:00 EDT. Hands-on with Wikipad, the $500 Android gaming tablet (video)

Hands-on with Wikipad, the $500 Android gaming tablet (video)
The Wikipad is an anomaly. It's a 10.1-inch, $500 Android tablet aimed squarely at gamers -- an expensive portal to a platform many mobile game developers have abandoned due to piracy. It's got an IPS display with 1,280 x 800 resolution, an NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30 quad-core 1.4GHz processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (at launch). So ... it's not quite as sharp in the graphics department as some other tablets on the market, nor is it as pretty as its main handheld gaming competition, the PlayStation Vita. On top of that, it's from an engineering firm that you've never heard of -- Wikipad is also the name of the business behind the tablet, and this is the company's first product launch. Oh, and did we mention that the main selling point is an attachable game controller that frames half the tablet in a mess of plastic buttons, joysticks, and speakers? And no, the controller won't be sold separately, nor will it work with any other tablet. Defying all logic, however, the Wikipad feels like a surprisingly solid piece of equipment (regardless of the fact that the prototype model we used was hand-built). From the light but solid construction of the tablet's chassis, to its grippy molded rear -- which helps both for gripping the tablet without the controller attached and assists sound amplification when the device is laid down -- nothing about the device feels cheap. As a tablet, it's speedy and responsive. Apps load quickly and smoothly, and it's got extra loud speakers for gaming without headphones (or for David Guetta, as was demonstrated to us). The custom skin it was running felt a bit rough -- the apps get reorganized with a gaming focus and slapped onto a flippable cube, which caused some visual stuttering from pane to pane. Another feature of the custom OS is a special 3D game launcher, which includes sections for Nvidia's Tegra Zone, PlayStation Mobile games, GameStop-suggested titles, and Google Play. There are some less than exciting ad banners attached to this launcher, but they're easily ignorable. Though Gaikai is still working with the Wikipad post-Sony buyout, CEO James Bower told us the game streaming service won't be there at launch -- he's hoping it'll arrive by year's end, "but that's up to Sony."Gallery: Wikipad hands-onContinue reading Hands-on with Wikipad, the $500 Android gaming tablet (video)Filed under: Gaming, Tablets, Wireless, MobileHands-on with Wikipad, the $500 Android gaming tablet (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 14:33:00 EDT. Hubble reveals XDF, the deepest view of the universe ever captured
That picture above is the deepest and most detailed view of the universe ever captured. It's called XDF, or eXtreme Deep Field, and was created using Hubble Telescope data from 2003 and 2004. It combines ten years of NASA Hubble Space photographs of a single sky sample into one full-color historic view of the galaxies. Hubble pointed at this patch of the constellation Fornax for fifty days, with an exposure time of 2 million seconds. A dazzling trip back in time, the image reveals almost 5,500 galaxies that include Andromeda, spirals similar to the Milky Way, along with remnants of galactic collisions. According to NASA, the XDF reveals galaxies that go as far back as 13.2 billion years. There's a video after the break describing how the shot was assembled; those interested in learning even more can participate in a Google+ webinar with the XDF team this Thursday, September 27th. Here's hoping that when NASA finally gets the James Webb Space Telescope going, we'll have an even deeper view into our galactic past.Continue reading Hubble reveals XDF, the deepest view of the universe ever capturedFiled under: Science, AltHubble reveals XDF, the deepest view of the universe ever captured originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 14:18:00 EDT. O2 to sell upcoming HTC smartphone without a wall charger, says it's part of a 'simple vision'
In what could be considered a relatively strange move, O2 has announced that an upcoming, unannounced HTC smartphone won't come with a wall charger inside the box. According to the Euro carrier, this idea is part of a "simple vision" in which it wants "to take chargers out of boxes full stop," adding that research has shown more than 70 percent of UK customers don't have the need for such charger as they already own one with the same compatibility. The soon-to-be HTC device will, however, include a USB to micro-USB cable, so not everything will be completely lost. The iPhone 5′s Camera Is Faulty, Shows Purple Haze When Light Source Is Just Out Of Frame
We've just learned that the iPhone 5 camera may be faulty, showing a purple haze (yep, I said it) in certain lighting conditions. If you take a picture with the iPhone 5, and there's a bright light that's outside of the frame, you'll see a purple tint come across the image. This is possibly due to the Sapphire glass used in the camera's lens. As we all know, Sapphire is a purple/bluish gem, and though the purple tint isn't noticeable without that bright glare from an off-screen light, it can really fudge up some pictures if the conditions aren't just right. The phone is smart enough, however, to compensate in certain situations.

Samsung SGH-T799 tablet turns up at the FCC wearing T-Mobile's 4G colors
If you liked the look of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 when we reviewed it back in May, but were holding out for a T-Mobile 4G variety, then your patience might soon be rewarded. A Tablet-shaped device from Samsung sporting the model number SGH-T779 has just popped up at the FCC. While that code name might not tell us much, the T-Mobile branding, and the 4G logo are a little easier to make sense of. There was another model, SGH-I497, that went through the FCC with the same ID -- which had a distinct AT&T / Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 flavor to it -- so betting fans might consider the odds of this being the same thing, but for another operator, as being reasonable. Those who prefer not to chance the hand of fate, likely only need wait a short while, however, for this to pop up on the network's store to find out.Filed under: TabletsSamsung SGH-T799 tablet turns up at the FCC wearing T-Mobile's 4G colors originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 13:45:00 EDT. Boost Mobile announces the LG Venice: a $220, 4.3-inch handset with Ice Cream Sandwich
It's only been a few days since we saw those leaked shots of what was rumored to be Boost Mobile's own variant of that Optimus L7 -- and, well, today the LG handset sees its official debut on the prepaid carrier. The LG Venice, as it'll be more commonly known around these parts, boasts a 4.3-inch, WVGA screen alongside a 1GHz CPU, a 5-megapixel camera on the rear (VGA quality on the front) and a video mode capable of shooting up to 720p recordings -- of course, this is all running LG's UI 3.0 flavor of Ice Cream Sandwich. As we've become accustomed to, Boost Mobile is pricing its new Android handset at a decent price ($220), with the device expected to start hitting "exclusive" shelves on October 10th and other "select" retail shops later the same month.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileBoost Mobile announces the LG Venice: a $220, 4.3-inch handset with Ice Cream Sandwich originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 13:30:00 EDT. From the lab: Lumia 920 low-light shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III
It looks like Nokia's controversial marketing move, which involved using pro DSLRs to "simulate" low-light shooting, was even less necessary that the smartphone maker may have thought. During our visit to the company's Tampere, Finland research and development complex, we were given access to a comprehensive testing suite, enabling us to shoot with the Lumia 920 and a handful of competing products in a controlled lighting environment. Technicians dimmed the lights and let us snap a static scene with each handset at just 5 lux -- a level on par with what you may expect on a dimly lit city street in the middle of the night. The 920 took the cake, without question, but the iPhone didn't fare too poorly itself, snatching up nearly as much light as the Nokia device. The 808 PureView also performed quite well, but the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III yielded unusable results. It's one thing to snag proper exposure, though -- capturing sharp details with little noise and superior color balance is an entirely different beast, and the Lumia managed to do just that, as you'll see in our 100-percent-view shots further on. Later in the evening we hit the streets of Helsinki for a real-world shootout. The 920 did present some issues with exaggerated shake and other rapid movements, but it offered up excellent results overall, even in scenes that were too dark for us to make out any details with our own eyes. Our nighttime shoot can be found in the gallery below, followed by plenty of comparison photos after the break.Gallery: Nokia Lumia 920 Low-Light ShootContinue reading From the lab: Lumia 920 low-light shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S IIIFiled under: Cellphones, Cameras, MobileFrom the lab: Lumia 920 low-light shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 13:00:00 EDT. RIM is no stranger to rough seas -- the past few days alone have seen a service outage in the EMEA regions, news of a dwindling user base, and a new 52-week low for the company's stock price. Naturally, one of the big themes of CEO Thorsten Heins' keynote address at the BlackBerry Jam developer conference was "believe" in the company, and some people seem to have taken that mantra to heart. After dipping to $6.22 (the lowest it's been in almost exactly nine years) earlier this week, RIM's share price began to recover shortly after the live-streamed address began, and has generally been on the uptick ever since.

When in Helsinki, or rather Espoo, there's only thing left to do after stopping by Nokia's glass House -- visit Rovio's HQ. That's right, the company made famous (and filthy rich) by flinging fowl is just a short walk away from Elop and co.'s waterside domain. And, in a bit of perfect timing, we were graciously welcomed into the gaming outfit's office on the eve of its Bad Piggies launch. As you might expect and hope, the walls, doors, floors, couches, desks, soft drinks and even bottles of hand lotion are adorned in all things Angry Birds. There's even a mock-up experience store -- populated with a variety of branded paraphernalia -- sitting pretty in pale green just outside a bank of cubicles. It's everything we ever imagined it to be. But don't just take our words for it. You can check it out for yourself in a video after the break. And now, we're really Finnish(ed). Google's fast-track approach to updating Chrome gives a different theme to each update: last time, it was all about visual acuity. For the just launched Chrome 22 stable version, the focus swings to gaming. Web apps can now lock in the mouse control for first-person shooters, simulations and other 3D content that needs the full attention of the pointer during play. Not keen on action games through the browser? There's still some fine-tuning in place for those who live on the cutting edge, including Windows 8 users and Retina MacBook Pro owners. The update may already be sitting on your computer if you're running Chrome; if not, you can get your gaming-friendly fix (and the security notes) through the source links.Filed under: Gaming, Internet, SoftwareGoogle adds mouse lock to stable Chrome 22 for 3D shooter mavens originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 Sep 2012 12:31:00 EDT. RadioShack parts company with CEO James F. Gooch in management shakeup
RadioShack's board of directors have asked current CEO James F. Gooch to step down from his position, effective immediately. While the management team doesn't have a replacement in mind, current CFO Dorvin Lively will assume control of the retailer while a recruitment agency begins headhunting. Neither party offered any reasons for the announcement, but the wording of the release (below) did bring to mind the phrase "bloodless coup" for some reason.Continue reading RadioShack parts company with CEO James F.
