Apple Lightning cable inspection finds an extra-smart connector, won't make for cheap substitutes
Apple made much ado of the Lightning connector it launched side-by-side with the iPhone 5, but what we've known about it has been limited outside of the presence of an authentication chip. Double Helix Cables' Peter Bradstock has delved deeper and tells AppleInsider that there's some clever wiring that clinches the reversible design. While Lightning's power supply is truly symmetrical among the contact pins, the data isn't -- which suggests a chip inside is redirecting data to keep the plug working as intended. The technique helps explain why Apple would need any elaborate circuitry in the first place. No matter the wizardry inside, Bradstock doesn't see any cut-rate Lightning alternatives being useful in the near future: as it's unlikely that anyone outside of Cupertino knows how the authentication works at this stage, clone cables may amount to little more than heaps of metal and plastic.Filed under: Cellphones, Peripherals, MobileApple Lightning cable inspection finds an extra-smart connector, won't make for cheap substitutes originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 18:22:00 EDT. Google patent delivers close-up photos when your phone can't, Blade Runners would approve
It's been 30 years since we saw Deckard track down replicants by having a machine "enhance" pictures, and yet we're still stuck with distant-looking photos when we want more detail than our smartphone cameras can manage. While we'd argue that a few phones already live in that Blade Runner future, Google has just obtained a patent that could give the rest of us a helping hand. If the zoom isn't up to snuff, the proposed software could gauge a mobile device's position and orientation to offer a closer, already-taken photo from a server as a substitute, whether it's a Street View shot or a more traditional image. The geocoded system could even cue photos based on the time of day and year to provide that extra dash of authenticity. We already get a trace of the concept through photo overlays within Street View itself, although there's no indication as to whether or not Google will link our camera apps directly to a cloud of substitute photos -- suffice it to say that the industry has changed a lot since Google was using the iPhone 3G to illustrate its photography concepts.Filed under: Cellphones, Cameras, Internet, Software, MobileGoogle patent delivers close-up photos when your phone can't, Blade Runners would approve originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 17:27:00 EDT. Consumer Reports says Fisker Karma has 'numerous shortcomings'

Consumer Reports says Fisker Karma has 'numerous shortcomings'
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Fisker It's not a surprise that Consumer Reports doesn't like the Fisker Karma. The tester vehicle that the magazine straight-up purchased died before it went 200 miles. Then CR really figured out what was wrong with the plug-in hybrid. So, is it really a surprise that CR's test results found the $107,000 Karma to have "numerous shortcomings" and "fell well short" of expectations? Enough of each, in fact, to earn a "failing grade." It's a brutal review, and one that goes beyond problems with a single vehicle. No, CR says the Karma has: poor dash controls, limited visibility, a cramped interior, awkward access into and out of the seats, an engine that is noisy when running, long battery recharge times, and a small backseat and trunk. The Karma's heavy, SUV-like weight affects agility and performance, and the Karma lacks the oomph you would expect. So, yeah. Fisker had a response ready, pointing out the good parts of the review, like the "outstanding ride, handling and braking." In the CR video, which you can watch below, reviewer Tom Mutchler does say nice things about those particular aspects, but the good is outweighed by the problems found with the fit and finish of the Karma. In the end he says the car "sacrifices way too much function for fashion." There's also this: Fisker says, "As the Karma is a concept car come to life, packaging and visibility will of course not be that of a minivan," which no one is asking for. Just a little common practicality. Fisker also says it plans to improve NVH and the touch screen. You can get an idea why those are important, in this video.Continue reading Consumer Reports says Fisker Karma has 'numerous shortcomings'Consumer Reports says Fisker Karma has 'numerous shortcomings' originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 17:02:00 EST. California Governor Brown signs bill clearing use of driverless cars on public roads (video)
Google just chalked up one of the more important victories for driverless cars. California Governor Jerry Brown has signed bill SB1298 into law, formalizing the legal permissions and safety standards needed to let automated vehicles cruise on state-owned roads. While the bill lets anyone move forward with their plans, it's clear from the ceremony that local technology darling Google is the primary impetus for the measure: Brown visited Google's Mountain View headquarters to put ink to paper, and Google co-founder Sergey Brin oversaw the signing with his Google Glass eyewear on full display. If you're dying to see driverless vehicles become mainstays of the Golden State, the official act making that possible is already available to watch after the break.Continue reading California Governor Brown signs bill clearing use of driverless cars on public roads (video)Filed under: Robots, TransportationCalifornia Governor Brown signs bill clearing use of driverless cars on public roads (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 16:54:00 EDT. The October 5th edition of Entertainment Weekly has a built-in Twitter feed (really)
Youth-oriented TV drama factory The CW is hoping that Entertainment Weekly readers are interested in taking Twitter from smartphones and computers to the printed page -- er, at least a printed page with an LCD insert attached. The October 5th issue of EW features a miniature LCD display with the six most recent posts to its Twitter feed (@CW_Network), as well as a "short video showing stars of new CW shows," according to The New York Times. Yes, seriously -- an LCD screen with some form of internet connection embedded directly into copies of a physical magazine. "Emily Owens M.D." -- a new show on The CW -- is the first to receive direct promo treatment via the magazine's LCD display. It's unclear if all issues of the Oct. 5 edition will contain the embedded video screen (only 50,000 issues of a 2009 EW issue ran an embedded Pepsi video ad, for instance). CW executive VP Rick Haskins said the company's social media team overseeing the project will only filter out "profanity or other unacceptable language." As for negative tweets, however, those are fair game. Not that we'd encourage such things, but this setup sounds all too ripe for exploitation by the denizens of the internet. Do with the information as you will, unscrupulous readers.Filed under: Displays, Software, HDThe October 5th edition of Entertainment Weekly has a built-in Twitter feed (really) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 16:19:00 EDT. Google Maps for Android takes navigation indoors for France, helps find your way through Carrefour
Interior navigation with Google Maps for Android has usually been the province of only a handful of regions at best. But what about Provence? While the deal isn't all-encompassing, Google is now serving indoor maps for popular locations throughout France. Coverage starts with the major airports in Paris and Lyon, extending to include major nationwide stores like Carrefour and FNAC, shopping centers like the Carrousel du Louvre and museums like La Géode. All told, over 50 venues have signed onboard and should be enough for those moments when you're rushing to catch a connecting flight at Orly... or just want to find the salad dressings in aisle three.Filed under: Cellphones, GPS, MobileGoogle Maps for Android takes navigation indoors for France, helps find your way through Carrefour originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 15:55:00 EDT. Nexus 7 arrives in Japan, better late than never
Well, it took a while, but Google has finally launched the Nexus 7 in Japan. The tablet made its state-side debut in July, but it took almost three months for it to cross the Pacific and land in the east Asian nation. Pricing is a little higher than what we've seen everywhere else, with the 16GB model selling for ¥19,800, or about $312. It makes a perfect companion for the recently updated Play Books app that also just made its debut in the Land of the Rising Sun.Filed under: TabletsNexus 7 arrives in Japan, better late than never originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 15:37:00 EDT. Thankfully, there's the GameGenomeProject, a discovery engine that helps you find games that match your mood. The system is fairly simple right now - there are only four characteristics to choose from including one for "Undead" - but the idea of a Pandora for games is pretty compelling.

The Sweet, Sweet Cruelty Of Apple's New Lightning Connector For iPhone 5

The Sweet, Sweet Cruelty Of Apple's New Lightning Connector For iPhone 5
Apple's new iPhone 5 comes with a completely new connector, a first since the introduction of the 30-pin model alongside the 3rd generation iPod (though that version received updates including video capabilities along the way). The new Lightning connector is 80% smaller than the 30-pin version, and it has a much better name than "30-pin dock connector." But in many other regards, it's a bit of a mixed bag for consumers. And yet, after a few days of frequent use, I love it. Here's why.

iPhone 5 and Nokia Lumia 920 face off with image stabilization test (hands-on video)
Nokia's Lumia 920 packs the industry's best image stabilization -- there's no questioning that -- thanks to a camera module that pairs both sensor and lens-based optical IS. The iPhone 5 also offers a notable improvement over its Apple-made predecessor on the video front, but considering that its stabilization is of the digital variety, we wouldn't expect it to top Nokia's new flagship. We had an opportunity to test both smartphones in a head-to-head demo at Nokia's research and development facility in Tampere, Finland, about two hours north of the company's Espoo headquarters. In fact, we're told that this is the very first such comparison shoot in the world, considering that the iPhone made it to market just last week and the only opportunity to shoot with a Lumia 920 is currently in the European country where the device was born. As expected, the Nokia phone was able to capture far smoother video than what we snapped with the iPhone, with both devices secured side-by-side in a homemade foam holster. Unlike our handheld interview shoot earlier today, we pushed the limits a bit further this time, running through Nokia's parking lot and turning every which way as well. It's important to note that the Lumia 920 we used was a prototype, but its performance was still quite solid. You'll find the side-by-side video just past the break -- the Lumia 920 is on the left, with the iPhone clip on the right.Continue reading iPhone 5 and Nokia Lumia 920 face off with image stabilization test (hands-on video)Filed under: Cellphones, Cameras, MobileiPhone 5 and Nokia Lumia 920 face off with image stabilization test (hands-on video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 15:00:00 EDT. Report: Sharp increases layoffs number, aiming for profitability by March 2014
Japanese electronics giant Sharp is reportedly planning a major restructuring to bring the company back to profitability by 2014, as reported by Kyodo News. Said restructuring will see Sharp cut nearly 11,000 (10,966) jobs from its 57,170-person workforce by March 2014 -- just under 20 percent of all employees -- and sell off various assets, resulting in ¥213.1 billion ($2.7 billion) of much needed capital from lenders. Named assets to be sold include international manufacturing plants, and shares in other Japanese electronics company, Toshiba. The company also plans on shuttering its international manufacturing plants, as well as once again cutting employee wages. So, what's gonna save Sharp from more turmoil? A rethinking of its LCD TV business, apparently, as well as a "strengthening" of the company's smartphone LCD offerings. Sharp's also moving away from solar batteries, selling off its US-based solar firm Recurrent Energy LLC. Company prez Takashi Okuda will head up the massive restructuring, leading an "emergency management committee" starting in October. All of this adds up to Sharp expecting a return to profitability by next April. You'll forgive us if we're a bit wary of that prediction, but our best wishes are with those impacted by the chaos.Filed under: Displays, Home Entertainment, HD, MobileReport: Sharp increases layoffs number, aiming for profitability by March 2014 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 14:39:00 EDT. Electric Odyssey travels around the world in 300 charges, 15,500 miles
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Citroen, Europe/EU Just because Rafael de Mestre took his Tesla Roadster around the globe a bit faster doesn't mean that the adventure that the Electric Odyssey duo of Antonin and Xavier have been on is any less amazing. After all, they went 15,500 miles through 17 countries in an all-electric Citroen C-Zero (a rebadged Mitsubishi i-MiEV) in just eight months. The pair left Strasbourg, France in February and made it back safe and sound yesterday, after finding a lot of friendly outlets along the way - enough for "almost 300" charges. That's an average of over 50 miles per charge in a jellybean-shaped EV that crossed the Rockies and dusty Asia. Once they got back home, Antonin and Xavier held a livestream video chat with some of the people (called "pluggers") who helped power their global journey (you can watch it below). This is the part where the Odyssey's official mission - "to improve the image of electric cars with the general public and reassure people concerning their use" - was proved successful. Electric vehicles might be getting more and more common, but round-the-world drives will always be interesting and full of great people.Continue reading Electric Odyssey travels around the world in 300 charges, 15,500 milesElectric Odyssey travels around the world in 300 charges, 15,500 miles originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 14:11:00 EST. The Engadget Interview (captured with Lumia 920): Nokia CEO Stephen Elop on WP8 and beyond
Do you know what's better than one interview with Stephen Elop? Two interviews in one month. We'd barely recovered from yesterday's bout of nostalgia when we were given the opportunity to sit down with Nokia's CEO in his office at Nokia House. Better yet, we were allowed to record the discussion with a hand-held Lumia 920 prototype. The resulting video is remarkably stable. Full disclosure: the audio was recorded with a shotgun mic mounted on a Sony NEX-C3 camera. We talked about HTC's colorful "signature" Windows Phone 8X and 8S and what that means for the Nokia-Microsoft partnership. Next we asked if Nokia is planning to work with carriers to offer incentives for existing Lumia owners to upgrade to the company's 920 and 820 handsets. Finally, we discussed the evolution of PureView imaging technology from the 808 to the 920 and how Nokia plans to combine these building blocks in the future. Hit the break for our video interview.Continue reading The Engadget Interview (captured with Lumia 920): Nokia CEO Stephen Elop on WP8 and beyondFiled under: MobileThe Engadget Interview (captured with Lumia 920): Nokia CEO Stephen Elop on WP8 and beyond originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 14:00:00 EDT. Taking a cue from Nintendo's Wii U, Sony's PlayStation 3 is getting digital versions of some games delivered at the same time as their physical counterparts starting next week with Resident Evil 6 and NBA 2K13. via "PSN Day 1 Digital." Unlike Nintendo's initiative, however, Sony's is third-party focused -- not one game on its initial list of eight titles is published by any of Sony's international publishing studios. It's unclear whether this is a full-on initiative for Sony's PlayStation 3 or a promotion for October alone, but Sony's PlayStation blog calls PSN Day 1 Digital "a new program," which indicates it's something more than just a one month promo -- all the same, we've asked Sony for more info. We've seen the Kinect put to use to help you find your groceries, but the sensor's image processing capabilities have some more safety-minded applications as well. The fine minds at MIT combined the Kinect with a laser range finder and a laptop to create a real-time mapping rig for firefighters and other rescue workers. The prototype, called SLAM (for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) received funding from the US Air Force and the Office of Naval Research, and it stands out among other indoor mapping systems for its focus on human (rather than robot) use and its ability to produce maps without the aid of any outside information, thanks to an on-board processor.Continue reading MIT's real-time indoor mapping system uses Kinect, lasers to aid rescue workersFiled under: AltMIT's real-time indoor mapping system uses Kinect, lasers to aid rescue workers originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 13:16:00 EDT. Another stat: there are currently 105,000 apps in the store, with 3 billion downloads logged since the store's opening. RIM reveals more details about Blackberry 10
Well, it's finally here. Sort of. It's been a long and winding road for BlackBerry 10, and as has been RIM's way, the company continues to out new BB10 details just a bit at a time. As you may recall, we got a good look at RIM's original Dev Alpha hardware back in May, and were able to swipe our way through a good bit of BB10 a month later. It's BlackBerry Jam time now, though, and RIM gave us a more thorough look at the OS than ever before, and we got to see it running on a new Dev Alpha B handset. We couldn't pry loose any details about the hardware inside the new dev phone (other than it's got a BB10-standard 1280x768 screen), but we did get a few fresh facts about the software running on it. RIM unveils BlackBerry 10: new alarm, Peek gesture and more
At today's RIM event, the BlackBerry maker revealed BB1 new features in BB10, with Thorsten Heins saying the OS is "all about getting things done". He demoed a new Peek feature that lets users access the message notifications screen with a right angle gesture. The function can be used in any app: performing the swipe takes users to the BlackBerry Hub where they can view Tweets, messages and other notifications. There's also a new clock and alarm system, which works by the user holding their fingertip on the bezel and sliding it to the appropriate time to set an alarm. There's also the business-friendly Balance feature we already knew about, which will let users' IT departments access corporate email and perform remote wipe without affecting the rest of the phone. With Balance, BlackBerry phones essentially have two profiles, one secured for the work environment and one for personal use.Gallery: RIM unveils BB10 features Developing..Filed under: Cellphones, SoftwareRIM unveils BlackBerry 10: new alarm, Peek gesture and more originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 25 Sep 2012 12:11:00 EDT.
