From the lab: Lumia 920 image stabilization and 808 drop test at Nokia R&D (video) Posted: 27 Sep 2012 02:35 PM PDT From the lab: Lumia 920 image stabilization and 808 drop test at Nokia R&D (video) ![]() From the lab: Lumia 920 image stabilization and 808 drop test at Nokia R&D (video) Yesterday's lab installment gave us an opportunity to pit the Lumia 920 against competing smartphones in a low-light capture scenario, but Nokia's standard battery of tests is used to evaluate and improve far more than stills shooting. Several stops throughout the day brought us to a foam-filled sound chamber tasked with analyzing call quality in a variety of environments, a room with industrial freezers and ovens used to push the limits of operability, and a rig that can shoot with interchangeable sensors and apply image quality algorithms in real-time, without a handset in sight. Unfortunately, due to proprietary technologies and processes, we weren't permitted to photograph these first facilities, though we did manage to snap away at two other stations -- a platform that shifted up and down at adjustable speeds to test the Lumia 920's optical image stabilization, and a machine that drops smartphones against a block of concrete, used to simulate that all-too-frequent occurrence of handsets plunging towards pavement. We've seen plenty examples of the 920's OIS capabilities this week, so we won't go into much more detail on that front, but specialized (and pricey) equipment enables engineers to introduce consistent processes -- this machine simulated hand shake at different speeds, and even with exaggerated movement, the benefits were clear. A separate building contained the drop test contraption, which releases devices from an adjustable height, letting them land directly on a block of polished concrete. We tested both the 808 PureView and a Samsung Galaxy S III in this manner (with roughly 100 Lumia prototypes currently available, Nokia wasn't quite willing to risk sending one to its death). Both smartphones remained in perfect working order following the drop, so it's likely that they'll be able to handle a similar fall during regular use as well (company reps offered to test our iPhone 5, but we declined handing it over). That wraps up our week at Nokia's facilities in Finland -- there will be plenty more to explore once we have a Lumia sample in hand, but you'll find the OIS test and concrete plunge videos ready right now, posted just after the break.Continue reading From the lab: Lumia 920 image stabilization and 808 drop test at Nokia R&D (video)Filed under: Cellphones, Cameras, MobileFrom the lab: Lumia 920 image stabilization and 808 drop test at Nokia R&D (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 17:27:00 EDT. He's got a tough decision on his hands depending on which network he chooses, however, with O2 offering an exclusive tie-in edition of the handset with custom ringtones and pre-release images. On the other hand, he probably gets through plenty of data reading classified files and flicking through the Tom Ford catalogue, so perhaps he'd prefer Three's unlimited data. Facebook Gifts swaps virtual trinkets for real life goods Posted: 27 Sep 2012 02:03 PM PDT Facebook Gifts swaps virtual trinkets for real life goods ![]() Facebook Gifts swaps virtual trinkets for real life goods Remember the Facebook Gift Shop, that place where you could pick up virtual Troll dolls and send them to your friends? Well, it died. But, a phoenix has arisen from its ashes -- Facebook Gifts -- which will allow you to send real Troll dolls to your friends. You'll be able to order gifts for people directly through the social network and suggestions to pick up a little something will be tied into birthday reminders and life events like weddings. The new initiative is the result of its decision to purchase Karma, a social "gifting" app, in May. Over a 100 retailers have signed up for the launch, including Starbucks, and Facebook obviously will be taking a small cut of each sale, which could be a huge source of monetization for the company, especially on the mobile front. Interestingly, friends can be notified before a gift is delivered and will be given a chance to tweak orders -- just in case you don't know your mom as well as you think you do. Gifts is rolling out slowly in select cities now and will expand in the coming weeks. Though, it also has a viral element since once you've been sent a gift you are also blessed with the ability to send gifts yourself. Check out the source links for more details.Filed under: InternetFacebook Gifts swaps virtual trinkets for real life goods originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 16:47:00 EDT. Translogic test drives Tesla Model S and, surprise, loves it Posted: 27 Sep 2012 01:26 PM PDT Translogic test drives Tesla Model S and, surprise, loves it ![]() Translogic test drives Tesla Model S and, surprise, loves it Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors, Videos Here's a shocker: Translogic's Bradley Hasemeyer test drove the Tesla Model S Performance version and apparently had a darn good time doing it. While only available in the top-of-the-line version for now, the Model S will one day come in four packages - Base, Performance, Signature, and Signature Performance - ranging from about $50,000 to $100,000, after federal incentives. The Performance edition comes with an 85-kW lithium-ion battery and high-performance drive inverter that offers 416 horsepower at 5,000-to-8,600 rpm and 443 pound-feet of torque at 0-5,100 rpm. Hitting the accelerator pedal keeps the interior completely silent, and the only thing heard is Hasemeyer laughing as he watches the speedometer hit 60 miles per hour (starting from zero) in 4.4 seconds. You can see for yourself below, but here's what else is in the video. Hasemeyer visited the Tesla factory in Fremont, CA, and got to ask questions of chief designer Franz Von Holzhausen. Von Holzhausen says the team created an architecture for the Model S that it calls the skateboard - the batteries and powertrain are between the wheels and below the centerline of the wheels. Everything above that line became an open opportunity to design and create a new electric vehicle. This means there's more space for seats and comfort in the Model S than in most other EVs. You don't have to cross over the battery pack hump when moving around inside the car, for example. The display touch screen is something to behold. It's easy to view and toggle through to see your energy use, access the web and use the navigation screen and other apps. Above the wheel, drivers can customize the gauge clusters in front of them. Like most performance style cars, there are a number of modes you can switch to. Hasemeyer changes steering from standard to sport, and describes how this is the option for when you want less play and a little more feel in the steering wheel. Ted Merendino, product planner for Tesla Motors, explains why the company just released its own proprietary charger. The existing technologies - J1772 and others - didn't really offer the functionality that Tesla needed, he says. The Model S itself can accept everything from an average household plug all the way up the 90-kW DC charger, which it calls the Supercharger. As we found when we drove the Model S, the EV sets new standards with no compromise and no emissions plus all the bells and whistles, Hasemeyer said. Looks like a consensus is forming.Continue reading Translogic test drives Tesla Model S and, surprise, loves itTranslogic test drives Tesla Model S and, surprise, loves it originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 16:23:00 EST. It's still not great news for the Waterloo-based company, but it's a welcome change from its downright lousy earnings figures (net loss of $518 million on $2.8 billion in revenue) last quarter. Given all that RIM's been through recently, it's no surprise that analysts haven't been very bullish on the company — as per a Thomson Reuters poll, they expected the company to report a loss of $0.46/share on revenue of $2.48 billion. |

Posted: 27 Sep 2012 01:26 PM PDT BBC News Channel conducts live video interview over smartphone, goes where satellites can't ![]() BBC News Channel conducts live video interview over smartphone, goes where satellites can't We usually associate smartphones in news reporting with citizen journalism, not full-time journalists. However, a confluence of events has just led to the BBC's Nick Garnett becoming a pioneer for mobile broadcasting on the professional level. When a shortage of satellite trucks prevented Garnett from getting the usual video feed for the BBC News Channel, he successfully arranged the British network's first live video interview piped through a smartphone. The key, Garnett says, was Dejero's Live+ iPhone app: while live streaming apps are already commonplace, Dejero's let him merge the 3G and WiFi connections together, getting enough bandwidth to make a TV-worthy broadcast in a country where LTE is still very new. Combined with some very ad hoc staging and help from the BBC's technical teams, the coordination resulted in a surprisingly smooth interview about flooding in northeastern England with relatively few hints of the extra-tiny recording equipment involved. It's unlikely that broadcast crews will reach to their pockets for live coverage solutions before anything else, but the BBC is actively testing Dejero and other apps that could make smartphones as much a part of the field reporting arsenal as a camcorder and an eye for a good story. As we can't embed the clip, check the source link to see it for yourself.Filed under: Cellphones, AltBBC News Channel conducts live video interview over smartphone, goes where satellites can't originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EDT. Intel details Clover Trail tablets: three weeks on standby, 10 hours of use, 'fu... Posted: 27 Sep 2012 12:43 PM PDT Intel details Clover Trail tablets: three weeks on standby, 10 hours of use, 'full' Windows 8 experience ![]() Intel details Clover Trail tablets: three weeks on standby, 10 hours of use, 'full' Windows 8 experience You only have to look at the tidal wave of Ultrabooks to know that Intel design specifications can carry a lot of influence with manufacturers. That's why the chip-maker's claims about its latest reference tablet, built around a dual-core Atom Z2760 processor (aka "Clover Trail"), likely give us a broad hint of what to expect from devices like the forthcoming Lenovo Think Pad 2, ASUS Vivo Tab and Samsung ATIV Smart PC. In particular, Intel has shown us slides claiming that the dual-core 1.8GHz chip with Imagination SGX545 graphics will offer the "best Windows 8 experience" on a tablet with "compatibility and support for traditional apps and peripherals." And if you think that sounds like a subtle jibe at ARM-based tablets running Windows RT -- a version of the OS that doesn't even try to play nice with existing software -- then you could be right. To be fair though, the point of RT is to offer superior portability, and that's why Intel is also keen to emphasize that Clover Trail won't impact too heavily on your freedom of movement. Tablets should come in below 1.5 pounds (680 grams -- similar to the RT spec and much lighter than a Windows 8 Pro tablet) and 8.5mm in thickness, with built-in 3G, 4G and NFC. You shouldn't need to carry a charger either, since a new power management system promises a distinctly un-laptop-like three weeks on standby and a full day of "active use" -- defined as being at least 10 hours. Windows 8 tablets won't be like Windows 8 Pro machines, however, so don't go expecting USB 3.0, or a guarantee of 1080p visuals (most Clover Trail devices we've seen are 1,366 x 768) or souped-up security -- the Atom Z2760 is very much an evolved Medfield processor, with similar silicon and firmware, rather than a shrunken laptop chip. Needless to say, what really matters is how well manufacturers adopt this design and what price points they manage to hit. Intel says that at least 20 different Clover Trail tablets are already in the works, and early price tags seem to be around the $799 mark -- a hefty demand for sure, but perhaps one worth paying for those who need full-fledged Windows 8 and true portability at the same time. RT tablets, meanwhile, will have to come in much cheaper than that in order to be worthwhile.Continue reading Intel details Clover Trail tablets: three weeks on standby, 10 hours of use, 'full' Windows 8 experienceFiled under: TabletsIntel details Clover Trail tablets: three weeks on standby, 10 hours of use, 'full' Windows 8 experience originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 15:30:00 EDT. Own one and you can globetrot, or else keep separate home and work lines without the bulk of an extra device in the pocket. Sony is gambling that enough Americans have that multi-line desire by selling the Xperia tipo dual and its regular, single-SIM counterpart in the US as unlocked GSM models. Neither of the Android 4.0 phones is what we'd call a powerhouse with the same 3.5-inch screen, 3.2-megapixel camera and 800MHz Snapdragon inside, but both can latch on to HSPA 3G on AT&T, refarmed T-Mobile coverage and 2100MHz carriers abroad, even if the single-SIM tipo curiously has 900MHz 3G support that the tipo dual lacks. It's undoubtedly price that Sony is counting on more than anything: at respective contract-free prices of $180 and $190 for the tipo and tipo dual, the pair of Xperias may be sold most often as travel-only phones for the jet set.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileSony Xperia tipo and tipo dual reach the US in unlocked form, give Americans a taste of dual SIMs originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 15:00:00 EDT. Posted: 27 Sep 2012 11:38 AM PDT BlueStacks teams with AMD to optimize Android App Player for Fusion, Radeon chips (video) ![]() BlueStacks teams with AMD to optimize Android App Player for Fusion, Radeon chips (video) AMD has a disproportionately large $6.4 million investment in BlueStacks, and now we're seeing one clear reason why. The two companies have teamed up to create a special version of the BlueStacks App Player that's tuned for AMD's Fusion-based processors and Radeon graphics cards, running Android apps with the full help of the chip desgner's hardware in Windows 7 and 8 PCs. Accordingly, over 500,000 Android apps are invading AMD's new AppZone portal without any needed tweaks of their own, giving the service a much larger catalog than if it had gone with Windows alone. Both companies have a clear incentive to this melding of desktop and mobile: BlueStacks suddenly gets exposure to as many as 100 million AMD-running users, while AMD can tout a giant app catalog that may be preloaded on future PCs using its components. We don't know if the world needs yet another avenue for playing Angry Birds, especially when many AMD-based PCs won't have touchscreens, but the BlueStacks partnership could be a strong lure for new PC buyers who'd like an instant software library.Continue reading BlueStacks teams with AMD to optimize Android App Player for Fusion, Radeon chips (video)Filed under: Cellphones, SoftwareBlueStacks teams with AMD to optimize Android App Player for Fusion, Radeon chips (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 14:31:00 EDT. Field Trip, released for Android by Google-owned Niantic Labs, runs in the background on your Android handset, eagerly waiting for you to get near a point of interest. You can vote choices up and down, change the frequency of pop ups and post your findings to Twitter, Facebook and that one Plus social network. There's also a driving mode serves as an auditory tour guide when you're behind the wheel. The app's available now as a free download in Play. The iOS version, on the other hand, is coming soon.Continue reading Google's Niantic Labs launches Field Trip app for Android, helps the working world play hookyFiled under: Cellphones, Software, MobileGoogle's Niantic Labs launches Field Trip app for Android, helps the working world play hooky originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 13:56:00 EDT. It's easy to make the connection to the Galaxy Note line with a stylus front and center in the teaser, although just what's entailed is left to the imagination: is it a more formal launch for American Galaxy Note II variants? A new tablet beyond the Galaxy Note 10.1? All we know is that we plan to be there to find out.Filed under: Cellphones, Tablets, MobileSamsung asks us to witness 'The Next Big Thing' at an October 24th event in New York City originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 13:47:00 EDT.
