Kepler Motion supercar rears its hybrid head [w/videos] Posted: 18 Oct 2012 03:56 PM PDT Kepler Motion supercar rears its hybrid head [w/videos] Kepler Motion supercar rears its hybrid head [w/videos] Filed under: Coupe, Hybrid, Performance It's been a few years since we last heard about the Kepler Motors Motion hybrid supercar, but this car looks like it's still alive and kicking. For those who don't remember, we first heard about the Motion ahead of the 2009 Dubai Motor Show, but the company has released some new pictures and videos of the car carving up some exciting California back roads. It doesn't appear that there is any new information to relay about the Kepler Motors Motion, so we're still to believe that the car uses a Ford 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 driving the rear wheels and a pair of electric motors powering the fronts. This hybrid all-wheel-drive system is said to give the car a combined output of 800 horsepower with the EcoBoost alone tuned to 550 horses. With that kind of figure to go with an incredible exhaust note that this car has, we could only image what a modern Taurus SHO could really be. Check it out for yourself in the videos posted below.Continue reading Kepler Motion supercar rears its hybrid head [w/videos]Kepler Motion supercar rears its hybrid head [w/videos] originally appeared on Autoblog on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 18:00:00 EST. LeafLink a more functional remote-charging smartphone app for Nissan Leaf Posted: 18 Oct 2012 03:56 PM PDT LeafLink a more functional remote-charging smartphone app for Nissan Leaf LeafLink a more functional remote-charging smartphone app for Nissan Leaf Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Nissan If Nissan wasn't going to figure out how to create a remote-charging app for owners of Leaf electric vehicles, someone else was sure to do it. In this case, the result is a free, third-party app called LeafLink. While Nissan's official Carwings app lets folks set charging times from inside the car, LeafLink lets people do it remotely, in addition to pre-setting climate controls and other goodies, according to Green Car Reports. For a $9.99 upgrade, LeafLink lets Leaf owners program a future charging time, with the information being stored on a secure server. AMD reports $1.27 billion in revenue for Q3 2012 Posted: 18 Oct 2012 02:53 PM PDT AMD reports $1.27 billion in revenue for Q3 2012 AMD reports $1.27 billion in revenue for Q3 2012 While AMD wrestled to get back on the good foot last quarter, the Sunnyvale chip maker continued to struggle for the third three month financial period of 2012. While reporting $1.27 billion in revenue, the company still saw a ten percent sequential decrease and a 25 percent decrease year-over-year. The hurt not ending there, AMD's graphics division saw a revenue decrease of seven percent sequentially and 15 percent year-over-year. "The PC industry is going through a period of very significant change that is impacting both the ecosystem and AMD," said Rory Read, AMD president and CEO. Such words mirror that of longtime rival Intel, which also continues to struggle with a very unfriendly PC market. In an effort to rebound, AMD announced a restructuring plan to reduce operating expenses that will hopefully give the company more leeway to develop and produce new products and strategies.Continue reading AMD reports $1.27 billion in revenue for Q3 2012Filed under: Misc, AMDAMD reports $1.27 billion in revenue for Q3 2012 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 16:55:00 EDT. City CarShare rents electric vehicles for exposure, not profit Posted: 18 Oct 2012 01:52 PM PDT City CarShare rents electric vehicles for exposure, not profit City CarShare rents electric vehicles for exposure, not profit Filed under: Green Culture, Transportation Alternatives It's always refreshing when a non-profit's really not for profit. City CarShare, the non-profit car sharing service, has about 20 electric vehicles (EVs) in its fleet of 400 cars but it doesn't expect to make money on them, Fast Company says, citing an interview with City CarShare CEO Rick Hutchinson. His exact words: "Our model isn't built on ever making money on these vehicles." There you have it. The higher purchase cost and insurance rates for EVs make it harder for a car-sharing service to generate a profit from them, Hutchinson said. So, the EVs are there for another reason: generating awareness. City CarShare added its first EVs in 2003 as part of a six-vehicle pilot program. The carsharing organization incurs recharging costs of about $30 a month for each EV and has tripled its EV fleet from seven in April. Getting users to know more about the plug-in vehicles is important, since a customer got stranded earlier this year while trying to get from San Francisco to Sacramento in an EV because, well, he didn't realize the car was electric.City CarShare rents electric vehicles for exposure, not profit originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 15:56:00 EST. Microsoft announces Q1 earnings with $5.31 billion in profit, braces for Windows... Posted: 18 Oct 2012 01:51 PM PDT Microsoft announces Q1 earnings with $5.31 billion in profit, braces for Windows 8 surge Microsoft announces Q1 earnings with $5.31 billion in profit, braces for Windows 8 surge It's Microsoft's turn at quiet-before-the-storm quarterly results, and that's evident in the fiscal first quarter earnings it just dropped on our laps. The Redmond team is reporting $16.01 billion in revenue, but a more modest than usual $5.31 billion in profit over the summer -- while it's healthier than the Q4 loss stemming from the aQuantive write-off, it's not as impressive as the $7.2 billion profit from a year ago. While a tough PC market is partly to blame, it's equally hard to say that Microsoft couldn't have done better. There's a real chance that some of its customers have been holding back on purchases in anticipation of the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 launches; it's already setting aside $1.36 billion in revenue for Windows and Office upgrades. The company is unquestionably preparing itself for a giant spike in demand once at least Windows 8 rolls around later this month, so we'd say that the real litmus test will be the results we get after the holidays.Continue reading Microsoft announces Q1 earnings with $5.31 billion in profit, braces for Windows 8 surgeFiled under: Cellphones, Desktops, Laptops, Tablets, Software, MicrosoftMicrosoft announces Q1 earnings with $5.31 billion in profit, braces for Windows 8 surge originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 16:06:00 EDT. UK carriers form alliance to speed up 800MHz LTE rollout, let us enjoy our Freev... Posted: 18 Oct 2012 01:51 PM PDT UK carriers form alliance to speed up 800MHz LTE rollout, let us enjoy our Freeview TV UK carriers form alliance to speed up 800MHz LTE rollout, let us enjoy our Freeview TV Isn't it better when we work together? British carriers think so. EE, O2, Three and Vodafone have officially created a non-exclusive joint venture, Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited, that should speed up the deployment of 800MHz LTE by keeping Freeview over-the-air TV signals clear of interference while the partners bring their low-frequency 4G online. Previously, the networks were bound to form an equivalent company called MitCo that wouldn't have been active until after the 800MHz auction, preventing companies from getting their wireless houses in order until they'd already made a commitment. There's also a competitive angle involved to go with the cooperative work, as you might imagine: with EE's 1,800MHz LTE poised to go live on October 30th, choosing infighting over assistance would only help widen the frontrunner's lead. Whether DMSL represents altruism or pragmatism, we'll appreciate knowing that the hurdles to a catch-up in UK 4G will be more those of the technical reality than the usual political maneuvering.Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless, MobileUK carriers form alliance to speed up 800MHz LTE rollout, let us enjoy our Freeview TV originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 15:52:00 EDT. Tesla will take Roadster trade-ins for Model S Posted: 18 Oct 2012 11:47 AM PDT Tesla will take Roadster trade-ins for Model S Tesla will take Roadster trade-ins for Model S Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors One would never mistake a shiny new tech-filled Tesla Motors dealership for a used-car lot, but with several years worth of Teslas already on the road, that notion is about to get very real. Those retreads will be pretty rarified, though. The California-based electric-vehicle maker is starting a buyback program in which owners of the company's first car, the Roadster, can trade it in for credit against the purchase of a Model S sedan, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Tesla made about 2,500 Roadsters, with chassis bits provided by Lotus, between 2008 and 2011. The company estimates that it could sell Roadsters for anywhere from about $73,000 for a four-year-old model to about $93,000 for a 2010 model with low miles. Owners paid upwards of $109,000 when they were new. Either way, owners would get a credit against the purchase of a Model S, which started production earlier this year. The newer cars sell for anywhere between about $50,000 and $100,0000, after federal tax credits.Tesla will take Roadster trade-ins for Model S originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 14:14:00 EST. It's mostly been limited to big-league content as a result, but that's changing with the new Jolicloud Open Platform. Developers now just have to build JavaScript-based Node.js components that hook their own apps, media and storage into the same central Jolicloud repository we'd use to manage Instagram and Tumblr. More details and full documentation are forthcoming, although the "open" in Open Platform leads us to think there won't be many technical (or financial) barriers to entry.Filed under: InternetJolicloud Open Platform arrives, lets developers put most any cloud service into one hub originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 14:26:00 EDT. Recon Instruments offers Flight HUD goggles for wingsuit pilots and skydivers Posted: 18 Oct 2012 11:47 AM PDT Recon Instruments offers Flight HUD goggles for wingsuit pilots and skydivers Recon Instruments offers Flight HUD goggles for wingsuit pilots and skydivers Recon Instruments has decided to take its wares off the slopes and into the air, provided enough people bite. The Flight HUD is built around the same core as its ski goggles, but has been tweaked to offer information more relevant to skydivers, base jumpers and wingsuit pilots. The tiny LCD just below the field of vision displays speed, altitude and glide ratio in real time. Rather than simply guess how fast they're going, adrenaline junkies will be able to see accurate data in the moment and make the appropriate adjustments. Obviously, this is a rather niche market, so Recon Instruments has set a goal: 250 pre-orders to trigger a production run. The early birds can pick up a Flight HUD for $299, while every order placed after the initial 250 will cost $349. With Zappli’s InstaBuy, Shoppers Get A Two-Click Checkout When Buying On Mobile Posted: 18 Oct 2012 10:45 AM PDT With Zappli's InstaBuy, Shoppers Get A Two-Click Checkout When Buying On Mobile With Zappli's InstaBuy, Shoppers Get A Two-Click Checkout When Buying On Mobile One of the biggest challenges in mobile commerce is not the shopping part – it's the buying. To address this problem, Zappli, makers of the myShopanion iOS application, have publicly launched "instaBuy." Similar to Amazon's one-click checkout (but back off, patent lawyers, it's got two clicks!), the feature allows mobile shoppers to provide their content info, billing address and credit card details just one time, then tap a button to buy from that point forward. After tapping, shoppers still have to enter in a password to verify the purchase, but it's still a far easier solution than actually stepping through the traditional checkout experience. The feature is live now in the company's comparison shopping app called myShopanion, which offers mobile access to the stores from a couple of dozen retailers, including Walmart, Buy.com, Kohl's, Macy's, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, and others. In addition to the streamlined checkout, the company also built technology that lets you view the product options (think available colors, clothing sizes, etc.) in a mobile format, even if the retailer doesn't offer a mobile-friendly website. Co-founder and CEO Phillipe Suchet declined to give details as to what the turnaround time was for making those types of integrations possible, but claims it takes "very little time" to implement on their end. But what's more interesting, perhaps, is that the instaBuy feature is also being made available to third-parties, which they can implement in their own mobile website or app by adding a line of code. Suchet says there are some deals in the works regarding this now, but he can't disclose the names yet. From the sounds of it, though, the first adopters outside of myShopanion will be price comparison engines and mobile shopping malls, not individual retailers. But don't those companies compete with myShopanion? Yes, but Suchet says that the myShopanion app serves as a great testing ground. "This becomes a way to have a pretty amazing laboratory where we can improve what we do," he explains. The app works on the affiliate model, but he declined to offer numbers for active users, downloads, or any other metrics. In addition to supporting mobile, the plan is to take instaBuy to the web next. |
