Toshiba kicks off pre-orders for Windows 8 PCs, all due to ship October 26th
Not to be outdone by Korean rival Samsung, Toshiba has become the latest manufacturer to announce it's now accepting pre-orders for its loaded repertoire of Windows 8 PCs. Naturally, this contains an array of options for all different types of budgets and preferences, including the Japanese company's Satellite S, P and L laptops or the U series of Ultrabooks, the Qosmio X875 for gamers and, for those who enjoy a more desktop-friendly setup, the LX815 and LX835 all-in-ones are also there for the taking. As expected, Toshiba will be shipping online pre-orders on October 26th, while folks who decide to go the brick-and-mortar route should be able to physically pick one up on that very same day. There's still a lot more where this came from, but you'll have to head over to Toshiba's site to see what else the outfit has to offer -- link to the store is just down below.Continue reading Toshiba kicks off pre-orders for Windows 8 PCs, all due to ship October 26thFiled under: Desktops, LaptopsToshiba kicks off pre-orders for Windows 8 PCs, all due to ship October 26th originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 17:24:00 EDT. Chameleon Android launcher hits version 1.1, adds support for native widgets
It's not every day that we cover launchers of any kind, but when we heard the Kickstarter-funded Chameleon had been updated to version 1.1, we thought those of you who have supported the project since its early days would be happy to hear the news. And while the refresh itself doesn't bring many changes, it does include the long-awaited support for stock Android widgets -- not to mention a few welcomed improvements to the current Twitter, Google Calendar and YouTube homescreen-living apparatuses. Naturally, these will go hand to hand with those tweaks announced less than a month ago in version 1.0 of the tablet launcher. There's a video courtesy of Chameleon situated down below -- in case you're interested in seeing what all the fuss is about before you download the Android commodities.Continue reading Chameleon Android launcher hits version 1.1, adds support for native widgetsFiled under: Tablets, SoftwareChameleon Android launcher hits version 1.1, adds support for native widgets originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 16:29:00 EDT. Tesla declares October 19 "Supercharging day"
Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors Highway etiquette states that slower moving vehicles stay to the right. Those slowpokes may want to stay off California highways altogether this Friday. That's because Tesla Motors has declared October 19 as "Supercharging Day," when the electric-vehicle maker's first six fast chargers will be opened to the public, according to Hybrid Cars. Tesla announced the news via an e-mail to car owners. The company's Superchargers, which fact charge at 90 kW and 440 volts, can put 150 miles into a top-of-the-line Model S 85-kWh battery in about a half-hour, or about as long as it takes from a Model S driven by a deranged owner to get from Palo Alto to San Francisco. Earlier this month, Tesla said it's getting $10 million from the state to help prepare its Fremont, CA, factory to one day start making the Model X SUV there. That model is expected to see the light of day in 2014 and will be Supercharger-capable.Tesla declares October 19 "Supercharging day" originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 16:09:00 EST. Micron's RealSSD P320h PCI Express SSD gets reviewed: wildly fast, but a little unstable
"Taking one's sweet time" just took on an entirely new meaning. Well over a year after Micron first introduced its RealSSD P320h PCI Express SSD, the aforesaid device is finally hitting the general availability stage. And with that, the flood of reviews begins. What sets this guy apart right out of the box is its native stature; much like Fusion-io (and very unlike most all other rivals from OCZ, Intel, LSI, etc.), this thing sidesteps the mishmash of SATA / SAS controllers and opts for a direct-attached PCIe approach. At around $7,000, it's clearly aimed first at enterprise, but given Micron's history in the consumer space, one could assume that this kind of wizardry will eventually trickle down. The fine folks over at HotHardware found their tester to be shockingly quick, easily outpacing its rivals when it came to read and write performance. Unfortunately, the Windows drivers provided weren't exactly mature, which led to a few booting issues when swapping in varying motherboards. Of course, no one ever said the Ferrari of PCIe SSDs would purr without a bit of finagling. Hit up the links below for the full spiel.Continue reading Micron's RealSSD P320h PCI Express SSD gets reviewed: wildly fast, but a little unstableFiled under: StorageMicron's RealSSD P320h PCI Express SSD gets reviewed: wildly fast, but a little unstable originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 15:49:00 EDT. Cricket's parent company, Leap Wireless, announced earlier last week its intentions to start blanketing more customers with LTE service, though it didn't say which markets would be the ones to get the same experience as folks in Tucson, Arizona. Today, however, Cricket's claiming that subscribers in the Las Vegas area can finally get a taste of savory Long Term Evolution, making this the second market where the newfangled network's now present. To go along with this, Cricket has said a revamped, LTE-ready version of that $150 Huawei Boltz modem will be available online and at retail stores around Sin City (and Tucson) for customers eager to try out the new service. No word on when the carrier plans to bring its "true 4G" network elsewhere, but, according to Leap CEO Doug Hutcheson, the idea is to have "approximately 21 million covered POPs by the end of the year." Toyota dealers: no, we're not ready to sell EVs quite yet
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Scion, Toyota Toyota dealers are just fine with hybrids, but they're not quite ready for electric vehicles. That's the gist of a new survey from AutoRetailNet, which found that most Toyota dealers think the Japanese automaker made the right decision to delay any kind of largescale launch of its Scion iQ electric vehicle, because of what's perceived to be limited sales potential. About 85 percent of those dealers said EVs are more than five years away from generating substantial sales, according to Plug In Cars. And more than eight in 10 said Toyota was right to delay mass production of the Scion iQ EV. Still, almost two-thirds thought the EV would be produced in the future. Toyota said last month that it would make only about 100 iQ EVs in the U.S. and Japan, a smaller batch than what was previously planned.Toyota dealers: no, we're not ready to sell EVs quite yet originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 13:54:00 EST. Internet Explorer 10 preview coming to Windows 7 semi-Luddites in mid-November
For all of Microsoft's talk of Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8, we've heard precious little about the Windows 7 version beyond the certainty that it was coming. Eventually. Someday. The company is partly putting that anxiety to bed with word that IE 10 should be available for the Metrophobic in mid-November, but only in a preview version -- a possible sign that Microsoft's Windows 8 RTM deadline prevented the concurrent platform releases we've grown accustomed to in recent years. The team in Redmond is hinging its launch of a finished Windows 7 build on the feedback it gets, so we'd suggest that those willing to experiment with a new browser (but not a new OS) still give IE 10 a shot next month.Filed under: Internet, Software, MicrosoftInternet Explorer 10 preview coming to Windows 7 semi-Luddites in mid-November originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 14:26:00 EDT. Amazon debuts Whispercast service, lets organizations manage Kindles and Kindle content
Individual Kindle users already have Whispernet, and Amazon has now announced another free service designed to make Kindles easier to manage for large organizations. Dubbed Whispercast, the service will let schools, businesses and other groups both distribute and manage the Kindles themselves and also distribute content to the devices. That includes the ability to control internet access on the devices (blocking the Twitter and Facebook integration, for instance), and the ability to distribute Kindle books and other documents to specific groups or classes. Amazon also says that it will "soon" include the ability to distribute apps to Kindle Fire tablets, as well an option for folks to bring their own device and add it to the network. Those interested can sign up for the service immediately at the source link below.Continue reading Amazon debuts Whispercast service, lets organizations manage Kindles and Kindle contentFiled under: TabletsAmazon debuts Whispercast service, lets organizations manage Kindles and Kindle content originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 13:35:00 EDT. PlayStation Store redesign goes live in Australia, Europe and New Zealand with a rocky start
Sony vowed a long (long, long) overdue PlayStation Store remake starting this week, and it delivered just that today with launches in Europe as well as Australia and New Zealand. As promised, the PS3 shop's cleaner design scales more elegantly from standard to high definition, brings more intelligent searching and makes it easier to find everything related to a given game. We still wouldn't be too eager to dive in just yet, as there's been hiccups early on -- the sheer amount of traffic has reportedly brought the new store to a crawl, on top of teething issues with adding funds and recognizing PlayStation Plus memberships. Sony has promised fixes, but we're suddenly not feeling so bad about having to wait for that October 23rd North American launch.Filed under: Gaming, SonyPlayStation Store redesign goes live in Australia, Europe and New Zealand with a rocky start originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 13:13:00 EDT. Isis makes October 22nd mobile payment launch official, vows 20 capable phones by year's end
While we could easily see this coming, it's still good to hear the news more directly: Isis has confirmed that its delayed mobile wallet system will arrive on October 22nd. The company's marketing lead Jaymee Johnson tells us that the NFC-based commerce should start in the previously mentioned Austin and Salt Lake City areas. We haven't been given a formal device list, but "as many as" 20 smartphones should be compatible by the end of the year. We can think of at least four. More details will follow on the day in question, although we already know that the cash-averse will need an Isis app, a special SIM card and compatible SmartTap terminals at stores. That's a lot of conditions that have to be satisfied just to lighten the strain on our pockets -- all the same, we'll take it when the alternatives are moving slowly.Filed under: Cellphones, Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, T-MobileIsis makes October 22nd mobile payment launch official, vows 20 capable phones by year's end originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 12:52:00 EDT. CloudOn announces new features, worldwide availability on iOS and Android
Having already conquered over 70 countries in its relatively short history, CloudOn decided it was now time to make its handy cloud-based tools available to all Android and iOS users around the globe. Aside from announcing its worldwide invasion, CloudOn's also outed version 2.5 of its application on Google and Apple's mobile platforms, bringing with it a slew of new traits into the mix -- among these are a FileSpace for "real-time context around any document," the ability to add single-tap annotations to Word, Excel or PowerPoint files, an all-new ribbon that's enhanced for tablet use and, naturally, universal language support. It's worth noting that while all of these novel features will be available on Android / iOS at some point, the former two are currently only compatible with Cupertino's devices -- however, CloudOn has told us the missing goods will be making their way to the other side very soon. We're not exactly sure when that's going to be, but if you're still interested in grabbing the app, you'll find the necessary download links below.Gallery: CloudOn version 2.5Continue reading CloudOn announces new features, worldwide availability on iOS and AndroidFiled under: Tablets, SoftwareCloudOn announces new features, worldwide availability on iOS and Android originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 12:00:00 EDT. SAE sets standards for DC Combo fast charging

SAE sets standards for DC Combo fast charging
Filed under: EV/Plug-in As fast-charging standards go, it looks like the Atlantic's finally covered. SAE International said this week that it has finalized technical standards for a DC fast-charging system that's is being supported by both American and European plug-in vehicle makers. SAE said its J1772 Combo standards were developed "in a consensus environment," and that they would help lowering typical electric vehicle recharging times from eight hours to as little as 20 minutes. This standards release is the most recent chapter in the ongoing battle between two competing fast-charging standards. Japanese plug-in vehicle makers such as Nissan and Mitsubishi are supporting the CHAdeMO standard, which both the Nissan Leaf (pictured) and the Mitsubishi i can use. Critics of the SAE Combo fast charging standard call it "the plug without the cars." Colombia to start testing 700MHz LTE, joins a Latin American trend in 4G
Those in the US can brag about having the range, indoor friendliness and other advantages of 700MHz LTE, but few other countries have that edge so far: Latin Americans who have any LTE at all usually have to contend with less tolerant 2.6GHz bands. Colombia isn't happy with that state of affairs, and its National Spectrum Agency is spearheading a rapidly growing 4G movement in the region by testing 700MHz LTE between the fall and winter. Its strategy echoes proposals from Brazil and Mexico that will use the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity band plan, providing more efficient airwaves as well as wider device and network coverage. It will take beyond early 2013 before Colombia and its neighbors are actively using 700MHz bands -- the digital TV transition is one of the bigger obstacles -- but there's desires for a fast-track spectrum handout that could bring blazing speeds to Bogota before too long. Toyota announces details on 90-car Scion iQ EV car-sharing fleet

Toyota announces details on 90-car Scion iQ EV car-sharing fleet
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Scion, Toyota A few short weeks ago we learned that Toyota is shrinking its overall plan for the Scion iQ EV down to an "extremely limited release." During its Future Mobility Seminar in Denver, CO this week, Toyota announced the small details for its diminutive electric vehicle (EV) program. The teeny 2013 Scion iQ EV will deploy in slight fashion in car-sharing programs on campuses and in urban environments later this year, but only "approximately" 90 of them. Yes, the entire fleet of Toyota's petite iQ EV could fit in one big warehouse. And you can't buy or lease them, you can just rent them for the short term. The iQ EV itself has decent numbers for a city EV, including a 13.5-foot turning radius thanks to its diminutive 78-inch wheel base. It seats four (well, if two people are itty-bitty) and has a top speed of 78 miles per hour. It uses a 47-kW (63 horsepower) electric motor and a 12-kWh battery to achieve a range of up to 50 miles per charge. That charge takes around three hours using a Level 2, 240V charger and there's an interesting additional feature: a timer that matches "charge completion time with the time the vehicle will actually be driven, to help reduce battery degradation." The iQ EV also has three driving modes - D, B and S - that each emphasize a different aspect of the car. D minimizes power usage in city driving. S gives better acceleration (from zero to 60 in 13.4 seconds). B improves the efficiency of the regenerative brakes. As for looks, two exterior colors are available, Silver and Super Red, with the top half, rear hatch, battery cooling inlets and front headlamps all accented in black. The charging port is up front, with a charge door where lesser cars have an upper grille. There's even a leather-wrapped seat, so when you hop into one of these rare, shared EVs for a few minutes, you can feel like you're borrowing someone's upscale EV.Continue reading Toyota announces details on 90-car Scion iQ EV car-sharing fleetToyota announces details on 90-car Scion iQ EV car-sharing fleet originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Wed, 17 Oct 2012 11:29:00 EST.
