This is the Modem World: I'm giving up absolutely nothing

This is the Modem World: I'm giving up absolutely nothing
Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology. She looked at me, then at my phone and back at me. She was not pleased. Her eyes darted around the restaurant. They surveyed the other husbands, boyfriends and fiancés: Were they too ignoring their dates, checking sports scores, texting their buddies? Is my husband a jerk or is this a social pandemic? "What would happen if your phone didn't exist and you had to talk to me?" "But I am talking to you." "No, you're looking at your phone." "Right now, I am saying words to you. How is it that I am not talking to you at this very moment?" I wasn't going to win this with semantics. No, I lost the moment I decided it was an appropriate time to grab my phone. And, to be fair, I was being a jerk. We were at a nice dinner and I should be into her, not my email, sports scores or Reddit. So I put the phone away. I promised to not take it out for the rest of the night, a promise I kept. And we had a lovely evening.Continue reading This is the Modem World: I'm giving up absolutely nothingFiled under: Cellphones, MiscThis is the Modem World: I'm giving up absolutely nothing originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 18:00:00 EDT. Sony's 84-inch 4K Bravia KD-84X900 goes up for pre-order tomorrow for $25,000
That stunning and gigantic Bravia that Sony unveiled at IFA, well, we finally have pricing and availability for this potential TV king. The 84-inch Bravia KD-84X900 will go up for pre-order tomorrow, September 6th, for the jaw-dropping price of $25,000 (let us know when you've stopped hyperventilating). The edge-lit panel wont' be delivering full HD passive 3D entertainment to living rooms until later this fall, however. While orders can be placed less than 24 hours from now, shipments will have to wait until some undetermined day in November. Well, at least that should give you a few months head start on paying this monstrosity off... before the repo men eventually show up to take it off your hands.Continue reading Sony's 84-inch 4K Bravia KD-84X900 goes up for pre-order tomorrow for $25,000Sony's 84-inch 4K Bravia KD-84X900 goes up for pre-order tomorrow for $25,000 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 17:46:00 EDT. Amazon Kindle Fire sequel may have surfaced in logs, points to Android 4.0 and return to dual-core
There have been surprisingly few if any concrete leaks of Amazon's future Kindle Fire plans, even with the follow-up's appearance likely just hours away. Thankfully, we may have been given a last-minute peek into the company's strategy after an Engadget reader tipped us to some unusual activity in an app's hardware usage logs. At least a pair of hits have come from a new device identifying itself as "AmazonKFTT" instead of the much plainer "AmazonKindleFire" language attached to the original model. There's also signs that Amazon has upgraded the OS underneath to Android 4.0.3. We wouldn't anticipate this particular slate carrying a quad-core chip to tackle the Nexus 7 head-on, though -- unless the KFTT variant is just a firmware-updated Kindle Fire with a name change, the next generation should still have at least one dual-core tablet in the range. Here's hoping there are a few more surprises in store by the time Amazon takes the stage on Thursday. Tumblr Redesigns Default Mobile Layout To Focus On Sharing And Images

Tumblr Redesigns Default Mobile Layout To Focus On Sharing And Images
Tumblr today revealed a new and hopefully improved design for its default handling of mobile device blog rendering. It's a clean layout that brings liking and re-blogging to the main page, as well as sharing via Facebook, Twitter and email. Mobile sites also now support Pages, Tumblr's more permanent locations for stuff like "About Me" sections that live outside of the main feed, and two darlings of the weblog and mobile web in general, infinite scrolling and full-width images. The changes are small, but they definitely lend a refreshed look to Tumblr's somewhat dated previous mobile design (pictured below). The site's addition of easier to access sharing and re-blogging features also get at the core of Tumblr's business in terms of how it's actually used, so it only makes sense to introduce these features on mobile platforms where audiences continue to grow.

Yo Mobile, Russia's first hybrid, delayed until 2015
Filed under: Hybrid, Manufacturing/Plants, Europe/EU Hybrids are generally known more for their fuel economy than speed. True to form, Russia's first gas-electric model just got a little slower. Yo Auto, the hybrid-vehicle maker launched with help from Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, said the Yo Mobile model will be pushed back to early 2015, reports Agence France-Presse. Originally, it was supposed to debut later this year. An executive with Yo Auto, who resigned because of the delay, said the hold-up was caused by supply issues from a U.S.-based parts maker whose identity wasn't disclosed. The executive denied that the delay was due to the fact that Yo Mobile was nothing more than a publicity stunt. Prokhorov touted the vehicles during a presidential run last spring, then stopped talking about them. Prokhorov, who owns the National Basketball Association's Brooklyn Nets (formerly the New Jersey Nets), said in late 2010 that the Yo Mobile would see the light of day by the end of 2012. He also once claimed that his company would produce up to 45,000 Yo Mobile vehicles a year from its factory near St. Petersburg and sell them for between U.S. $10,000 and $15,000. Prokhorov's Onexim Group, along with Russia-based truckmaker Yarovit, was said to be investing about $200 million in a plant to build the cars. Earlier this year, Yo Auto started pitching a crossover hybrid that can run on both gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG) and can get about 65 miles per gallon. No price or release dates have been announced.Yo Mobile, Russia's first hybrid, delayed until 2015 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 16:51:00 EST. Scientists develop pair of algorithms that could enable thermal cameras to pick out drunk people
We're not sure if Georgia Koukiou and Vassilis Anastassopoulos of the University of Patras in Greece like a tipple or not, but the pair have developed two algorithms that, when used with thermal imaging, could pick out drunk people in crowds. What is it that betrays your best intentions to look sober? As always, your face. Booze causes the blood-vessels in your visage to dilate, and the researchers used this principle to compare facial scans against a database of tipple-free mug shots. Likewise the duo found that when under the influence, the nose gets warmer, while the forehead cools -- another visual check that the infrared can help identify. The hope is that using this technology, law-enforcement can make a judgement call based on more than just your wonky walk. But in our experience, the troublemakers are pretty good at outing themselves.Filed under: Science, AltScientists develop pair of algorithms that could enable thermal cameras to pick out drunk people originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 16:48:00 EDT. Spotify comes to Denon and Marantz receivers, shares music over NFC
Spotify didn't want to leave all the spotlight time to phone manufacturers today. To start, it's widening its toehold in the living room: three Denon AV receivers and four Marantz counterparts now have support for streaming Spotify Premium music through respective firmware updates, with control coming either through the on-device screen or through Denon's mobile remote app. You're not necessarily left out if you have no compatible home theater to call your own, however. As long as you have a device with at least Android 4.0, an update to the Spotify app will let you apply audio effects or share Premium music between NFC devices through a tap. All of the updates are free -- just know that you'll need Spotify's full $10 per month subscription to grease the wheels. Check the source links for the supported receivers and app updates.Filed under: Cellphones, HD, MobileSpotify comes to Denon and Marantz receivers, shares music over NFC originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 16:18:00 EDT. JBL has been sprinkling a fair amount of its sonic-spice atop desks of late, now it wants to sneak some of the same under your TV. Enter three new all-in-one soundbars just announced by the firm, which it claims bring surround sound performance. As well as that virtual surround experience, the JBL Cinema SB 100, 200 and 400 also sport an equalization switch that optimizes sound depending on where you put it (i.e., mounted on a wall, or on a furniture unit). The SB 400 has a separate wireless subwoofer, while the 200 has one built-in, leaving the 100 with the connections to bring in your own. Likewise, the 400 and 200 models also come with Bluetooth, for added audio content streaming options. If you've got a soundbar-shaped hole in your media set-up, then prices start are $199, $299 and $549 according to your feature requirements. Filed under: Green Culture, Transportation Alternatives, Carbon Offset, On Two Wheels "Bikestorming.org is about creating a systemic, global change on urban mobility for sustainable cities of the 21st century." That's the short mission statement from an artist activist who wants to make bike riding the most popular transportation mode within the next 18 years. Besides cutting carbon dioxide and air pollution, biking is fun and can look very cool, says Mati Kalwill, creator of the Buenos Aires culture and activism group La Vida en Bici (Life on a Bike). Kalwill christened his new global mission Bikestorming, and its modus operandi is: "a collaboration platform to make bicycles the most popular form of urban transportation on the planet." La Vida en Bici launched Bikestorming.org at Rio+20, the United Nation's Conference on Sustainable Development, which took place in late June in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. For Bill McKibben of 350.org, an activist group committed to stopping climate change, the conference was a big downer and not much was accomplished. In the Bikestorming video available below, though, McKibben says he was happy to see the launch of Bikestorming.org, a movement to get the world's population to ride bikes for 51 percent of time they are using transportation by the year 2030. Lots of cities and cities and towns are pushing for it, and now it just needs to spread all over the planet, he said. Kalwill says he is seeing bikes reaching a critical mass of awareness: "[Bikes] are on every politician's radar now. In the last year we've seen bicycle policy and infrastructure initiatives emerge in very diverse cities such as Mendoza, Rosario, Posadas, and Córdoba - as well as growing attention paid to bicycles in Buenos Aires' transportation policy and infrastructure." In Buenos Aires, a city without any real bike culture historically, La Vida en Bici it making it cool to cycle. Will it work in areas where the car is king?Continue reading Bikestorming says switching over to pedal power is the cool thing to do [w/video]Bikestorming says switching over to pedal power is the cool thing to do [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 15:09:00 EST. And to help with the bombast, HelloMoto! trotted out Google's Eric Schmidt, giving these three Verizon RAZR amigos a hearty welcome. Motorola just took the wraps of the Droid RAZR M and, we've gotta say, the slender handset is quite the looker. The 8mm thick body is plastic and kevlar, just like its titular predecessor, but it adds some nice visual flourishes of its own, including rivets around the rim of the device. Despite its diminutive size it has a nice heft in the hand, though we wouldn't say it's built like a tank. Over all, the device is frighteningly similar to the Droid RAZR, right down to the lock/power key with its concentric circle pattern. Developing... Hands-On With The Droid Razr M: The Reversal Of 'Big Phone Syndrome' Feels Wonderful
We're here at the Motorola event in New York, and I just got my hands on the Droid Razr M, the "little big secret" that Motorola's been amping up for. As you'd expect for a phone of this size, it feels excellent in the hand, with a 4.3-inch qHD display. As I've said over and over again, this screen size is the sweet spot. The most impressive thing about the Razr M is the way they managed to fit a relatively large display in such a small frame. Because of this, the M ends up having some of the thinnest bezels I've ever seen on a smartphone. In terms of viewing video, web pages, and gaming, this is pretty sweet. However, during normal use, even for just a few seconds, I found myself accidentally touching the screen and launching apps when I didn't mean to.

The curtains have finally been pulled back on Motorola's Droid RAZR HD, revealing little in the way of surprise. Abysmal attempts at secrecy aside, the Verizon-bound handset pushes the line forward with an incrementally larger 4.7-inch screen, 720p display, dual-core 1.5GHz S4 CPU and, most importantly, a 2,500mAh battery to temper LTE's juice-sapping ways. Motorola's new RAZR HD may be getting all the attention, but that's definitely not all the company was planning to reveal today. As expected, the new (and Verizon-exclusive) RAZR M has just taken the stage here at the Motorola's "On Display" event It's not like the device is any huge surprise -- a handful of leaked images effectively spilled the beans earlier this month, and the @EvLeaks Twitter account let some press images fly just prior to the event -- but there's no such thing as too many phones, right?

Motorola announces Droid RAZR Maxx HD
Well, we weren't expecting it at today's Motorola event, but Motorola just outed a Maxx version of the Droid RAZR HD. Like its svelter sibling, the HD Maxx has a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, LTE, and an 8-megapixel shooter, but it upgrades the onboard storage to 32GB. And the main event with any RAZR Maxx is, of course, an upgraded 3,300mAh battery that promises up to 21 hours of talk time, 13 hours of video playback or eight hours of web browsing on LTE. Naturally, a price has to be paid for such longevous life, but at 67.9mm wide, 131.9 mm long and a mere 9.3mm thin -- less than 1mm thicker than the standard HD -- it's a relatively small one. Naturally, we don't know how much this beast will cost, but Motorola's telling us it'll be available for this holiday season. Motorola RAZR M official: 4.3-inch qHD display, 1.5GHz dual-core, hitting Verizon for $99
Gosh, it feels like we're written this post already, huh? That's because we have. That handset you see up there is the Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE, which we've already seen in leaked photos. Well, Motorola just officially announced the phone and -- surprise, surprise -- there are no surprises. As we reported last week, the device has a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540) Super AMOLED Advanced display coated in Gorilla Glass. (The rear side is fashioned out of the same Kevlar you'll find on the Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx.) As you can see, the phone has nearly edge-to-edge glass with narrow bezels, which brings us to one of the phone's key selling points: it offers a good deal of screen real estate for a phone with such petite dimensions. Under the hood it packs a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 Snaddragon S4 processor coupled with 1GB of RAM. The handset also boasts an 8-megapixel rear camera capable of recording 1080p video, a 3MP front-facing shooter, GSM / UMTS / HSPA+ global roaming and 8GB of internal storage, along with a microSD slot. Additionally, the phone has an NFC radio and will ship with Android 4.0. And while the other two Moto phones announced today are coming this holiday season, this guy is landing on Verizon Wireless next week for $99, though it's up for pre-order today.Gallery: Motorola Droid RAZR MContinue reading Motorola RAZR M official: 4.3-inch qHD display, 1.5GHz dual-core, hitting Verizon for $99Filed under: CellphonesMotorola RAZR M official: 4.3-inch qHD display, 1.5GHz dual-core, hitting Verizon for $99 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 14:30:00 EDT. At its press event today in New York City, the Google-owned manufacturer gave the public its first official look at the Droid RAZR HD. Unless you've been living off the grid, it's hard to find much about this announcement fresh and / or exciting, as specs, photos, tutorials, FCC docs and even sample pics have been leaking since the start of April. Surprise already blown, the handset falls in line with previous reports, running a lightly-skinned version of Android 4.0.4 (upgradeable to Jelly Bean) and bearing a 4.7-inch 720p display, dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 8-megapixel rear camera, NFC, as well as a massive 2,500mAh battery. So, what's changed in this RAZR refresh? Well, the phone's back may still be Kevlar-coated (in this case, it's pretty much fully wrapped), but a few cosmetic differences have been made to the Droid RAZR HD's body. For starters, its front face almost spans from edge to edge, with just a little bit of bezel surrounding that display. Dimensions-wise, it's 131.9mm tall, 67.9 mm wide and still pretty thin at 8.4mm. It's definitely a coup for design-focused consumers that prefer to have their devices appear as a sea of seamless black glass. While it'll be hanging out on Verizon's 4G network, we're still waiting on pricing -- but we're promised that it will arrive "before the holidays." Mat Smith contributed to this report.Continue reading Motorola Droid RAZR HD unveiled: 4.7-inch 720p display, ICS, dual-core S4 for Verizon (video)Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless, MobileMotorola Droid RAZR HD unveiled: 4.7-inch 720p display, ICS, dual-core S4 for Verizon (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 14:26:00 EDT. Motorola aiming to upgrade all possible devices to Jelly Bean, promises to give you $100 credit if it can't

Motorola aiming to upgrade all possible devices to Jelly Bean, promises to give you $100 credit if it can't
At today's keynote, Motorola head Dennis Woodside has pledged that the company will attempt to upgrade all of its new and existing Android handsets to Jelly Bean "very soon." However, for some units, the latest version of Google's mobile OS is going to be too "compromised" to use properly. In that event, it's pledging to give you $100 credit off one of its brand new handsets, which are being unveiled today. It's not given details about how you go about claiming that credit, or when the program begins, but as soon as we're told, we'll let you know.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileMotorola aiming to upgrade all possible devices to Jelly Bean, promises to give you $100 credit if it can't originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 14:26:00 EDT. Google's Eric Schmidt: 1.3 million Android activations a day, 480 million devices worldwide
Kicking off the Motorola event in NYC, Google's Eric Schmidt has revealed some new Android figures for its captive audience of journalists and bloggers. It's now notching up some 1.3 million activations a day, which includes around 70,000 tablets ("We were late to them", notes Schmidt) every 24 hours. In total, that makes for just shy of 500 million Google-powered mobile devices around the globe -- 80 million in just over two months.Filed under: Cellphones, Tablets, Software, MobileGoogle's Eric Schmidt: 1.3 million Android activations a day, 480 million devices worldwide originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 05 Sep 2012 14:15:00 EDT.
