Ford builds sweet 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford [w/video]
Filed under: MPG, Ford, RacingFord has announced a new version of its spec racer that pushes the bounds of what small-displacement, turbocharged engines can do. Formula Ford, as the name suggests, is a single-seat, open wheel race car powered by a (you guessed it) Ford powerplant. As the cars are made of lightweight materials, the usual Formula Ford engine is a 1.6-liter mill, but this particular racer has been fitted with the 2012 International Engine of the Year, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost inline-three. This particular Formula Ford has also been converted to road use and has been testing on Germany's famed Nürburgring. There, it recorded the 11th-fastest lap ever at the 'Ring. At 7 minutes, 22 seconds, it was faster around the famed German track than the Ferrari Enzo, Lamborghini Aventador and Pagani Zonda. This particular 1.0-liter engine has been tuned to put out 202 horsepower, making this feat of beating the aforementioned supercars around the 'Ring even more impressive. The Formula Ford EcoBoost also has an unofficial top speed of 158.8 miles per hour, can get from zero to 60 mph in less then four seconds and can achieve 118 miles per gallon... at 35 mph. Check out the press release and video below to learn more about this exciting vehicle and the other Ford models in which this powerplant may soon find itself.Continue reading Ford builds sweet 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford [w/video]Ford builds sweet 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford [w/video] originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 17:54:00 EST. Forget About "iPhone 5″, Leaked Image Shows Packaging For "The New iPhone"
The next iPhone will be called simply "iPhone" if this pic is to be believed. Published by iPhonenieuwsblog.nl, the image is reportedly of the next, ahem, new iPhone's packaging fresh off a massive printing press. And within, clear as day, is the new iPhone with five vertical rows of icons and the wording "The New iPhone." Gone is the numerical designation that's been with the iPhone for the last four generations. Apple is making it as simple as possible with the next iPhone -- and this will likely be confusing to a lot of people.

Sony Xperia T shown on UK's Phones4U... with AT&T branding
Seeing the trademark AT&T globe brandished on the front of the Sony Xperia T may simply pass as a pleasant surprise for US customers if it were leaked through a Stateside e-tailer, but the GSM giant's logo popping up on a UK website is more of a head-scratcher. Yet, as you can see in the shot above, the Phones4U image of the new Xperia flagship (likely the TX, in this case) sports the famous icon below the screen, in place of the traditional Xperia branding. To add more fuel to the rumor fire, the back of the AT&T-ized variant is broken up into three segments, setting it apart from the international version's one-piece. Naturally we remain skeptics on the matter, but the two pieces of evidence at least hold a little more weight than your standard website blunder.Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless, MobileSony Xperia T shown on UK's Phones4U... with AT&T branding originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 17:51:00 EDT. Huawei's D1 Quad now available in China for $425 unsubsidized
Following the MediaPad 10 FHD quad-core tablet, Huawei's also starting to sell another device powered by its very own HiSilicon K3V2 (Hi3620) chip. Over the weekend, the Ascend D1 Quad (formerly without the "1" in the name) joins the familiar-looking D1 and D1 XL as the third member of the family, but unsurprisingly costs the most out of these three Android 4.0 phones -- we're looking at ¥2,699 or about $425 unsubsidized on Huawei's Chinese online store, while the remaining TI OMAP4460-powered candybars cost ¥100 ($16) and ¥200 ($32) less. Huawei Device chairman Richard Yu said on Sina Weibo that while some local competitors -- namely Xiaomi, K-Touch and Beidou -- are able to offer quad-core devices below ¥2,000 ($315), he assured fans that Huawei's build quality and user experience are worth the price. Staying true to his macho style, Yu also used this opportunity to take a dig at the Galaxy S III's price-to-performance ratio. Meow! Just a quick recap: the D1 Quad comes with a 1.4GHz 40nm Cortex-A9 chip, a mysterious 16-core GPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, 160GB cloud storage and microSD expansion, complemented by a 4.5-inch Toshiba IPS+ HD display, Gorilla Glass 2, eight-megapixel BSI main camera, 0.13-megapixel front-facing camera, pentaband WCDMA radio, old-school mini-SIM slot and a generous 2,600mAh non-removable cell (same as the D1 XL's). The more we look at this, the more tempted we are. At least until the APQ8064-powered Xiaomi Phone 2 lands in October, anyway.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileHuawei's D1 Quad now available in China for $425 unsubsidized originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 17:23:00 EDT. Intel finishes crossing the Ivy Bridge with new desktop Core i3 models
Intel has been staggering the rollout of its Ivy Bridge processors over the space of nearly half a year, starting with its higher-end quad-core chips; it's finally time for the company to complete the story and ship some budget Core i3 desktop parts. The semiconductor giant is coy about the new roster at this stage, but it does promise both regular (s-series) and low-power (t-series) Core i3 chips at clock speeds between 2.8GHz and 3.4GHz. If the past is an indicator, the new components will be mostly or exclusively dual-core and lack extras like Hyperthreading -- they will get Intel's newer integrated graphics and other perks through the upgrade, however. Bulk pricing and other details haven't yet been aggregated in one place, although we're seeing that even the faster 3.3GHz Core i3-3220 is selling at retail for $130. We wouldn't expect anything from Intel's new offerings to break the bank.Filed under: DesktopsIntel finishes crossing the Ivy Bridge with new desktop Core i3 models originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 16:57:00 EDT. Honda's modest sales target adds 200 Fit EVs in Japan
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Manufacturing/Plants, Legislation and Policyest-sales-target-adds-200-fit-evs-in-japanHonda continues its low-volume rollout of the Fit EV with a decision to lease 200 units in Japan over the next two years, mostly to local governments and businesses. After unveiling the car in the U.S. last November, Honda announced it expects to bring about 1,100 units to market over the next three years. The number could be larger, though, since Honda will be monitoring market acceptance to gauge production volume. We suspect the modest sales target has something to do with compliance with California's regulation that large automakers build at least some zero-emission vehicles. Honda's development team created the Fit EV with three targets: build an EV with greater range requiring less battery capacity, enhance motor drive performance and make the battery charging as time efficient as possible. The development team used two key words to define the EV's identity - "fun" and "mottainai" (which translates to "no waste.") Honda chose the basic package of its internal combustion engine Fit with its compact body size and occupant comfort, and worked on building an electrified version that maximizes energy efficiency. Honda was able to achieve what Green Car Congress calls "the current best AC energy consumption rate of 106 Wh/km and one-charge mileage of 225 km (140 miles) in JC08 mode." As for limited production and sales targets, Honda remains in line with other plug-in-hesitant major automakers like Ford, Toyota and Mitsubishi.Honda's modest sales target adds 200 Fit EVs in Japan originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 16:04:00 EST. It seems, though, that TiVo was one step ahead of us: back at CES the company teased a transcoder -- a device that would later be known as the Stream. As its name suggests, this little box streams recordings from your TiVo Premiere to as many as four iOS devices with the help of your local network. You can also use it to transfer shows for on-the-go viewing. So is it worth the additional $129? Virgin Media unveils quartet of new SIM Only plans for data-focused Brits
It was only in June that we saw Virgin Media shaking up its regular mobile plans for UK residents. The carrier is back for another round, this time to serve the SIM Only customers who thrive on unlocked phones. Four plans starting from £12 ($19) a month all provide unlimited data and text messaging for bring-your-own-phone subscribers, with voice as the only real separating factor: the thriftiest callers get 150 minutes per month, while higher £15, £17 and £25 ($24, $27 and $40) tiers ramp up to a respective 250, 1,200 and 2,500 minutes for chattier customers. The chief gotcha is a lack of bundled landline calling for all but the priciest plan, although existing Virgin Media subscribers can knock an extra £5 off of that rate. If you're the sort who can't bear the thought of a contract, Virgin now has you better covered.Continue reading Virgin Media unveils quartet of new SIM Only plans for data-focused BritsFiled under: Cellphones, MobileVirgin Media unveils quartet of new SIM Only plans for data-focused Brits originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 15:35:00 EDT. Apple's New iPhone (5? Fifth? Fiver?) Is Coming: Here's What It Should Look Like
Apple made its iPhone event date official today after weeks of chatter. What will the new version bring that its predecessor didn't? What won't it do that people want it to? Luckily, this may be among the most leaked pre-release Apple devices ever, so we actually have a pretty good idea of what to expect.

So you got a Raspberry Pi: now what?
When the Raspberry Pi was released earlier this year, the credit-card-sized Linux machine became an instant hit. The night it became available to order, both Premier Farnell/element14 and RS Components, the official distributors of the Pi project, exhibited the signs of a late '90s Slashdot effect: you could barely even get the two sites to load. Fast forward to today, and you can finally get your hands on one within three weeks. The Raspberry Pi is truly the Linux device of the year, if not the past decade. Follow past the break and we'll show you how to set yours up now that you've actually succeeded in snagging one.Continue reading So you got a Raspberry Pi: now what?Filed under: DesktopsSo you got a Raspberry Pi: now what? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 15:00:00 EDT. NEVS completes Saab purchase, earns right to brand name but not griffin badge
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Saab According to the Associated Press, a Hong Kong-based concern is close to building new Saab models. After some delays, National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) has completed the purchase of bankrupt Swedish automaker Saab. NEVS says it plans to debut an electric vehicle in about 18 months. When the car comes to market, it will wear the Saab name, but not the marque's well-known griffin logo. Reuters reports that the company will produce EVs based on the Saab 9-3 platform, with intentions to sell these vehicles primarily in the Chinese market. Due to the continued use of the distinctive griffin head logo by commercial truckmaker Scania and the Saab aerospace group, NEVS was only granted access to the Saab name, not its emblem. At the moment, it is unclear if the 9-3 architecture to which NEVS is referring is that of the now-defunct model or the new Phoenix architecture whose rights were recently purchased by Chinese automaker Youngman from previous Saab owner Spyker.NEVS completes Saab purchase, earns right to brand name but not griffin badge originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 14:00:00 EST. Microsoft delivers Windows Server 2012, puts the enterprise on cloud 8
Forget Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 is where it's at... if you're a corporate IT manager, that is. Microsoft has just posted the finished version of its suit-and-tie OS for immediate sale in download form. Not surprisingly given Microsoft's big cloud push, the emphasis with the upgrade is on improving how well the software scales for internet hosting -- the company wants one common backbone that can handle as little as a small e-mail server to large-scale Azure deployments and virtualization. Server 2012 is also defined by what you won't find: while the Metro-style interface from the platform's Windows 8 cousin shows its face in the Essentials version, it's noticeably stripped down and goes away in the more advanced tiers. The real shakeup for some might just be the new price points, which drop the cost by a large amount for offices that don't need more than a slice of what the all-out Datacenter edition has to offer. We'll admit that most of our attention as end users will be focused on what happens several weeks from now, but if you're one of those rare server operators that can't wait to start testing a new OS release almost immediately, you've got a head start on most of us.Filed under: Desktops, Internet, SoftwareMicrosoft delivers Windows Server 2012, puts the enterprise on cloud 8 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 13:42:00 EDT. With An Extra $1.2M From Rally Capital, Pirq Adds Loyalty, Nat'l Rollout To Its Restaurant Deals App
We last heard from Pirq when the company announced a nice deal with Apple to offer its employees a special app for discounts on food at restaurants near its offices in Cupertino -- a relationship that just might develop into something further, according to sources at the time. Today, however, we have some more news about Pirq expanding other parts of its service. The company has picked up an extra $1.2 million in funding from existing investor Rally Capital (a fund headed by former Nextel CEO Dennis Weibling); and it is adding a digital punchcard to its retail restaurant deals offering, as it prepares to take the service nationwide and to other categories besides food. James Sun, the CEO, says the company is also preparing for another significant round of funding in the new year with to ramp up its service once more. Today's $1.2 million takes the total invested by Rally into Pirq up to $3.2 million.

If HTC does reveal its upcoming Windows 8 devices, chances are they will not be available immediately. The mobile platform, and launch devices from HTC and Nokia, are expected to launch alongside Windows 8 in November.

Unreleased Nokia Lauta QWERTY slider emerges, shows where MeeGo might have tread
Those of us who remember Nokia's late-stage MeeGo phone development will recall how the dreams fell apart: we got the N9 and the developer-tuned N950, but the future grew dark almost immediately as Nokia swung its attention further towards Windows Phone. If MyNokiaBlog's prototype leak is accurate, however, the engineers in Espoo had planned at least one more MeeGo phone for the general public: meet the Lauta, or RM-742. It would have been an "immediate" follow-up to the N9 that brought a tilting, sliding QWERTY keyboard to the party, with performance identical to its touch-only sibling. Nokia was reportedly committed enough that it had fully functional prototypes and had penciled in a fall 2011 release to give the N9 some company. We don't really know why Nokia scrapped the Lauta, although it's not difficult to surmise that the company wanted to simplify its lineup at a time when profits were falling fast. The real tragedy may not be so much the decision to axe the Lauta as the absence of a true heir to what it represented -- between Nokia's public silence and recent departures from the relevant software team, MeeGo's future is more in doubt than ever.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileUnreleased Nokia Lauta QWERTY slider emerges, shows where MeeGo might have tread originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 04 Sep 2012 12:40:00 EDT.
