Nissan FedEx e-NV200 electric concept van delivers in Germany
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan It looks like Nissan made a special delivery at the Commercial Vehicle International Motor Show in Hanover, Germany, this week: a special concept version of the battery-electric e-NV200 panel van that it's been testing with FedEx since late last year. The Japanese automaker, whose EV e-NV200 has the same 24-kWh battery and 80-kW motor as the Nissan Leaf, started testing the vehicle with FedEx in London last December and expanded that effort to Yokohama, Japan, this past summer. Nissan says more testing will be done with FedEx in Singapore, Brazil and the U.S. The vehicle will likely include an option that allows it to be 80-percent recharged in 30 minutes using a DC fast charger. More in Nissan's press release below.Continue reading Nissan FedEx e-NV200 electric concept van delivers in GermanyNissan FedEx e-NV200 electric concept van delivers in Germany originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 17:50:00 EST. Sony's Xperia acro S now on sale in unlocked form for $650
Shortly after leaping through the requisite FCC hoops, Sony's 1.5GHz Xperia acro S is now on sale to able and willing Americans. For those who've forgotten, the 4.3-inch smartphone packs a 720p panel, IP55 and IP57 dust / water resistance, inbuilt NFC, Bluetooth, a 12.1-megapixel camera around back, a battery good for up to eight hours of yapping and Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). In unlocked form, it'll set you back $649.99 -- or, for the Sony faithful, just 64,999 Rewards points. Sadly, you can't get one stamped with a Sony Ericsson logo for the sake of nostalgia at any price. Per usual, the source link is awaiting your order. Vic Gundotra says Nik's 'high-end tools and plugins' will survive. Snapseed? Maybe not.
After Google effectively killed Sparrow's apps when it purchased the company (they're still available and supported, but don't expect much future development) there was some worry about the future of Nik Software. Well, Vic Gundotra took to Google+ to salve some of those fears. Earlier this week I proudly welcomed +Nik Software to Google. They've been making pictures more awesome for 17 years, and we're excited to bring Nik's expertise to the entire Google+ community! I also want to make something clear: we're going to continue offering and improving Nik's high-end tools and plug-ins. Professionals across the globe use Nik to create the perfect moment in their photographs (e.g., http://goo.gl/aDtkO), and we care deeply about their artistry. There is one bothersome caveat in that quote: "high-end." Gundotra may be promising a future for Capture NX and Efex Pro, but it's clear that the popular Snapseed doesn't fit that description. Now, he has not expressly announced the death of the Instagram competitor, but it seems to us that the writing is on the wall. The Android camera app may already have a set of friendly filters, but it lacks the simplified sharing and marketing buzz of Facebook's recent acquisition. Don't be surprised if the Snapseed team simply gets folded into Google+ or Android while its creation slowly withers and dies.Filed under: Cameras, SoftwareVic Gundotra says Nik's 'high-end tools and plugins' will survive. Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked, able to accept GSM SIMs right away

Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked, able to accept GSM SIMs right away

Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked, able to accept GSM SIMs right away
Great news for those waiting anxiously at the door for their UPS / FedEx delivery... well, for those awaiting a Verizon iPhone 5, anyway. We've already broken down the differences between the trifecta of iPhone 5 models, and it seems that the one VZW is hawking is a real gem for travelers. Aside from handling Verizon's LTE waves just fine, the nano-SIM slot will also accept cards from any other GSM carrier worldwide. In other words, AT&T nano-SIMs will get you onto its HSPA+ network, and T-Mobile nano-SIMs will play nice as well. If you're heading overseas, you can pick up a local nano-SIM on arrival and plug it straight in -- no unlocking code necessary. To confirm, this even applies to Verizon iPhone 5 units that were purchased under contract. You can hit the video after the break for proof, but heed one word of advice: wait until you find a legitimate nano-SIM to throw in there. It looks as if the cut-and-stuff approach leaves a bit to be desired.Continue reading Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked, able to accept GSM SIMs right awayFiled under: Cellphones, MobileVerizon iPhone 5 is unlocked, able to accept GSM SIMs right away originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 16:23:00 EDT. That's the recent history of Rafael de Mestre and his attempt to be the first person to take a standard, production electric vehicle around the world. After playing catch-up with the Electric Odyssey duo and their Citroen C-Zero EV, de Mestre suffered a crash in Germany just 600 miles from the finish line. Undeterred, de Mestre had his Tesla Roadster repaired straightaways and successfully completed the drive last weekend. @TeslaMotors Tweeted congratulations for "making the #GuinessBook of records with your Roadster: the first EV to make it around the world!" The company sees a lower overall adoption rate in day one than either Chartboost or Chitika, but the numbers show a rapid increase in user adoption over time.

LG Intuition review: Optimus Deja Vu with a Verizon LTE twist

LG Intuition review: Optimus Deja Vu with a Verizon LTE twist
More Info LG Optimus Vu review LG Intuition officially announced Intuition by LG hands-on It's not uncommon for US carriers to take an international smartphone under their wings, make a few adjustments to hardware and firmware, stamp their fat logos in multiple places and then sell it to the masses. Verizon is no exception: the LG Intuition is its interpretation of the Optimus Vu, a 5-inch phablet we reviewed over the summer. Perhaps calling it an "interpretation" is a bit of an overstatement: aside from a bump in firmware and Big Red's LTE, it is the Optimus Vu. In fact, going into this review, we had a difficult time believing our experience would be much different than our run-in with the Korean version. Our first reaction is that this doesn't bode well for the carrier. If Verizon opted for the Intuition in order to fill a gaping hole in its lineup, we have a hard time understanding why it would choose to greenlight this particular device with the Samsung Galaxy Note II coming within the next two months. The device's quiet launch is a solid enough indication that the network isn't planning on throwing a lot marketing dollars behind it, so it feels as though the Intuition's main reason for existing is to bolster Verizon's rapidly expanding LTE portfolio. Is there something intriguing about the Intuition ($200 with a two-year commitment) that wasn't there when we first played with the Vu? Or will we find ourselves in the Twilight Zone, reliving the same moment over and over again? Let's find out.Gallery: LG Intuition for Verizon reviewContinue reading LG Intuition review: Optimus Deja Vu with a Verizon LTE twistFiled under: Cellphones, Wireless, MobileLG Intuition review: Optimus Deja Vu with a Verizon LTE twist originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EDT. The Engadget Show 36: John Hodgman, iPhone 5, Improv Everywhere, Samsara and the New Museum
It can be tough to shake the notion that art and technology are conflicting forces -- that is, until you're confronted by a concept that lives at the crossroads of these seemingly dissonant concepts. For this latest episode of the Engadget Show, we set up shop right there, in order to explore what it means when technology itself is a work of art. We're starting things off at the New Museum on the Bowery in Manhattan, where Tim and Brian will be diving deep into the "Ghosts in the Machine" exhibition, to check out pieces like Stan VanDerBeek's Movie-Drome, a dome dreamed up in the mid-60s that foresaw a world in which the viewer is bombarded by visual stimuli. We'll also discuss how the museum is harnessing the power of the web to open its offerings up well beyond its gallery doors. We speak to the founder and principle players of comedy performance art group Improv Everywhere about the role technology has played in the rise of the group and some of its most famous (and infamous) pranks. As ever, we're breaking out the Gadget Table to discuss the month's latest and greatest (and not-so-greatest), including the iPhone 5, Amazon's Kindle Fire and Samsung's Galaxy Note 10.1, before Brian heads out to the private (annex) library of comedian-turned-deranged-billionaire John Hodgman to discuss how technology is impacting the publishing industry. While we're at it, we'll be speaking with the producer and director of the classic film Baraka and its newly released spiritual sequel, Samsara and paying a visit to the gang at Breakfast New York, who have worked with the likes of Google and Conan O'Brien to turn advertising into art. All that and the introduction of our latest feature "Ask @hodgman." Welcome to the new Engadget Show.Continue reading The Engadget Show 36: John Hodgman, iPhone 5, Improv Everywhere, Samsara and the New MuseumThe Engadget Show 36: John Hodgman, iPhone 5, Improv Everywhere, Samsara and the New Museum originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 15:20:00 EDT. Chances are you've enjoyed Vevo's music video catalogue in one form or another, and purists who prefer .com access are being rewarded today with a fresh website design. The "video watch page" was previously littered with related clips, a playlist and other distractions, which have now been dispatched for greater focus on the tune at hand. Much of this has been moved to "artist pages", a new pop-up hub (pictured above) which is full of extra info on your chosen act. Head over to Vevo to see the enhancements for yourself, and with impending OUYA support, you might want to consider it your primary dispensary for that daily dose of Biebzilla.Filed under: InternetVevo's website redesign simplifies the video watch page, adds artist pages originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 14:32:00 EDT. Yesterday, Smith announced that this IPO registration will be withdrawn. The reason, said Smith CEO Bryan Hansel in a statement, is that, "we were unable to complete a transaction at a valuation or size that would be in the best interests of our company and its existing shareholders. We have instead elected to pursue private financing opportunities to support the execution of our business plan." Smith, which makes large, all-electric delivery trucks, reported a net loss of $52.5 million last year, and lost another $27.3 million in the first six months of 2012.Continue reading Smith cancels IPO, says it was not in company's "best interests"Smith cancels IPO, says it was not in company's "best interests" originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 14:09:00 EST. NFL Network and RedZone Channel coming to Time Warner Cable
You don't have to look high (or low) to find a litany of complaints regarding Time Warner Cable's service, support or pricing, but it's evidently aiming to right one particular wrong later today. According to Bloomberg, the National Football League has inked a deal with TWC to bring the NFL Network and RedZone Channel to its systems. The move comes just months after the NFL ushered its networks onto rival Cablevision, putting TWC is a particular bind in the greater NYC market. It's still unclear where the channels will be positioned and how much extra you'll have to pony up to get 'em, but hey -- it's cheaper than moving to a FiOS neighborhood. Vizio's CinemaWide 21:9 HDTVs hit physical store shelves, price slides below $2k
While Philips is backing out of the ultrawidescreen game, it appears Vizio is still trying to move at least a few more units. The company announced that its 58-inch CinemaWide HDTVs have moved from being available exclusively online, to the physical store shelves of Costco and Sam's Club stores. If the prospect of watching most movies without any black bars (although standard 16x9 TV programming won't quite fit without side bars, zooming or app/menu filler) hasn't quite moved you to buy, there is also the news that its price has dropped another $500 to a shade below $2,000, which puts it closer to the 46-inch HDTVs it's size resembles when watching regular widescreen video. When they initially started shipping our friends at HD Guru were told it was a limited one time only run of 1,000 units -- we'll see if any more sets show up or if this the last gasp for HDTVs in this format.Filed under: HDVizio's CinemaWide 21:9 HDTVs hit physical store shelves, price slides below $2k originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 13:35:00 EDT. Sony's stacked Exmor RS phone camera sensors detuned over quality worries
Sony would still like you to get excited about its upcoming Exmor RS stacked CMOS image sensors -- just not too excited. Both the 8-megapixel IMX134 and 13-megapixel IMX135 are scaling back from their original RGBW (red, green, blue, white) coding to an ordinary RGB over concerns that they aren't meeting Sony's "image quality standards" as originally designed. Consequently, either sensor will be less sensitive to light and diminish some of that high dynamic range magic. The company also doesn't want to get our hopes up for a quick arrival on shelves and clarifies that there's a phased launch starting in January. Mobile shutterbugs may be crestfallen knowing that Sony won't have the best possible camera sensor in future Xperia phones, but the honesty at least guarantees that the company gets a timely return on its $994 million investment.Filed under: Cellphones, CamerasSony's stacked Exmor RS phone camera sensors detuned over quality worries originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 13:17:00 EDT. Europe approves Universal - EMI merger, cements the dominance of the 'big three'
The European Union has signed off on Universal's $1.9 billion purchase of EMI music, provided that it sells off two-thirds of the fallen giant's assets to comply with competition regulations. The most notable jewel on the auction block is label Parlophone, home of the early Beatles records, Pink Floyd, Radiohead and Kylie. Chiefs added the conditions in the hope of preventing the new mega-corporation from gaining too much market share, but given that Sony (which bought EMI's publishing arm) and Warner Music are its only real competitors -- it's sealed the trio as the only guests at the top table of the music industry, problematic for anyone looking to found an iTunes or Spotify rival and doesn't fancy playing by their rules.Filed under: Misc, Portable Audio/VideoEurope approves Universal - EMI merger, cements the dominance of the 'big three' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 12:58:00 EDT. Looxcie HD brings 1080p and WiFi streaming to a helmet near you
Looxcie isn't just a luxurious sounding word (and terrible pun), it's also a maker of life-sharing head-mounted cameras. Up until now, it would only let you capture your life in a rather pedestrian 480p, but the new Looxcie HD does away with that, letting you grab that bike ride in full glorious high-definition. Other additions include WiFi (previous iterations relied on Bluetooth) to hook up to your Android or iOS device with, a larger 1,200 mAh battery and improved low light performance. Owners of previous models might spot that with new features comes a new, larger form. The price of evolution it seems. The price for the device, on the other hand, is $279, or $329 if you opt for the "Explore" bundle, which incidentally you can pre-order now. Driving Electric shares EV grin 'from driver to driver' to increase sales

Driving Electric shares EV grin 'from driver to driver' to increase sales
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, AutoblogGreen Exclusive For years, Felix Kramer has been driving around in a converted plug-in Toyota Prius with "100+ MPG" plastered on the side. Going about his daily errands, on road trips and in general just using a plug-in vehicle well before most people knew what they were, Kramer learned that when you engage people about electric vehicles, they respond. This is the entire concept behind his new venture, Driving Electric. As you can see in the photo above, Kramer's current fleet contains both a Chevrolet Volt and a Nissan Leaf, both adorned with pro-plug-in stickers and license plates. Kramer isn't shy. And he also knows the "EV grin" (the look that comes across someone's face the first time they drive an electric vehicle) is the best way to further his mission of getting more EVs on the road. Thus, Driving Electric's method is to spread the word "from driver to driver." Kramer told AutoblogGreen he knows drivers are the best salespeople: The idea came to me because I discovered I was selling cars. The success of plug-in vehicles is not a sure thing. We could lose the tax credit, and if we do, it's a questionable thing. But even if we keep it, the automakers haven't been doing the best job promoting their cars. So, starting this weekend at National Plug In Day and with the help of the Electric Auto Association, Plug In America and PlugShare, the Driving Electric website will go live. From there, the "EV curious" will be able to find a local plug-in vehicle driver who is willing to take them out for a personal test ride or drive. During the pre-launch ramp up, Driving Electric has found hundreds of drivers in over 40 states and four Canadian provinces. The EV curious can't find exact addresses, just pictures of the cars and contact information for the owners. As Kramer said "There's no substitute to someone having a drive. It's the action of closing the door and feeling the solidity. There's still the idea that these are golf carts. When they hear that 'thunk,' they realize it's a real car, and that changes peoples' minds."Driving Electric shares EV grin 'from driver to driver' to increase sales originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 11:56:00 EST. UK pricing begins to filter out for Motorola's Intel-powered RAZR i smartphone
Soon after it's unveiling, the Intel-based RAZR i showed up in Clove's listings with a SIM-free price of £342, and now it looks as if a few more outlets are pushing pricing details to the world. Expected to storm the UK in October, the phone should ship to Virgin Media customers for around £23 per month on its Premiere Tariff, while T-Mobilers will be able to score one for £0 to £31 per month depending on the contract. All told, not too shabby for the world's first 2GHz Atom-backed Android phone, and if you're eager to push all of this iPhone 5 stuff aside, at least you know precisely how many quid to save up between now and next month.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileUK pricing begins to filter out for Motorola's Intel-powered RAZR i smartphone originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 12:02:00 EDT.
