Verizon CFO buries his head in the sand, claims unlimited data is 'going by the wayside'
"La la la la. I can't hear you." Verizon's CFO, Fran Shammo, might've just as well made those comments with his hands firmly cupped over his ears, as the firm's chief number cruncher told attendees at today's Goldman Sachs investor conference, "Unlimited is just a word, it doesn't really mean anything." While Sprint and T-Mobile would certainly take issue with that statement, Shammo then dug the hole deeper by saying, "That whole unlimited thing, I think, is going by the wayside." These comments were made in the context of Shammo playing up the carrier's shared data plans, wherein he explained his belief that consumers "think they consume a lot more data than they really do." Shammo also revealed that Verizon has converted more subscribers and devices over to the new scheme than it'd initially anticipated. Naturally, change within any industry takes time, but now that Sprint is in a position to offer unlimited data at a meaningful speed and T-Mobile has climbed aboard the bandwagon, Verizon may have to change its tune if a significant number of consumers decide that unlimited isn't dead after all. You can view the entire transcript at the source link below, but consider this: would you take unlimited plans into consideration when shopping between carriers, or is Mr. Shammo right that consumers really don't use that much data? Give us your thoughts in the comments below.Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless, MobileVerizon CFO buries his head in the sand, claims unlimited data is 'going by the wayside' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 17:56:00 EDT. How to honor your legendary late-co-founder? If you're Ideo, it involves putting a modern spin on one of his most iconic creations. The design firm is paying tributing to computing pioneer Bill Moggridge with this Grid Compass-based Galaxy Tab dock, which combines the first laptop with Samsung's slate to add content to a tribute site for the innovator. Like the original Grid, the Tab shows off content with an orange tinge -- oh, and the keyboard works and it'll charge when plugged in. Apple has finally broken silence on the customer reaction to Maps in iOS 6, which spawned Tumblrs, fake twitter accounts and generally a lot of mockery and confusion. The statement, provided to AllThingsD from Apple spokeswoman Trudy Miller, essentially says this is a first try, and Apple knows there's lots to do to make it better.

Facebook trialling automatic Photo Syncing for Android app

Facebook trialling automatic Photo Syncing for Android app
It might not be the biggest Facebook-photo news of late, but if you like to share your life with the network's Android app, there's word of a new feature on trial just for you -- photo syncing. Sound familiar? Sure, that's because you might already be doing something similar with the Google+ app with your very same phone. But, if Facebook is more your jam, then it looks like you might soon be able to shuffle those food pictures up to your profile "automagically." If you're worried that you might accidentally share something a little more private, be assured that photos sent to Facebook won't be public until you decide to share. Also, much like Google's implementation, you can decide whether to use mobile data or WiFi for uploading, with images that are shared over cellular being crunched down to a smaller size. It seems that this is still in trial though, so don't despair if you can't see the option -- or perhaps that's just how you like it. Lenovo axes Android App Shop, points you in the direction of Google Play
Business-types, Lenovo pondered, needed their own App Store Shop, dedicated to selling business-only applications to those strutting around looking serious in their polyester suits. It seems that such demand never materialized, however, with the company shuttering the outlet only six months after its launch and pointing users in the direction of Google Play instead. While the bulk of the apps purchased in that time will still work around 90 that used the store's license management system will cease to function on November 2nd, a list of which you can find at the source link. Forbes columnist takes stab at GM's 'scams' with Chevy Volt sales numbers
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Chevrolet, GM, Legislation and Policy A Forbes piece is blasting the Chevrolet Volt as a failure again, calling General Motors out for what the magazine says is a manipulation of sales numbers for the extended-range electric vehicle. The publication has published an editorial by contributor Patrick Michaels which accused the automaker of "giving away rent-a-Volts," saying the model's record-high sales of 2,831 units last month were artificially inflated because about two-thirds of the sales were leased (for as little as $199 a month). Michaels argues that true sales to the general public are closer to about 850 units a month. Further fueling the opinion piece's claims of a government "scam" are recent reports that the U.S. Department of Defense will buy 1,500 Volts. In Michaels' words, "The fact is that no one wants this car." As you likely recall, Reuters recently reported that GM may be losing almost $50,000 on each Volt sold, a claim that was judged to not stand up to arithmetic scrutiny - a contention that was quickly refuted by former GM executive Bob Lutz (in the pages of Forbes, no less). And just think, there are only 12 days until GM's monthly sales numbers for September to come out. We can only wonder what we'll hear about then.Forbes columnist takes stab at GM's 'scams' with Chevy Volt sales numbers originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 15:45:00 EST. Apple trying for patent on electromotive charging, could use that confident stride to charge iPhones

Apple trying for patent on electromotive charging, could use that confident stride to charge iPhones
We've seen the concept of electromotive (movement-based) charging before, but it usually comes at the cost of either a clunky design or a limitation to very low-power devices like watches. Apple has been experimenting with a concept that could power gadgets as big as iPhones and iPods with that spring in your step -- and without the bulk of any extra wires. A newly published patent application uses flat, printed coils to generate electromagnetic induction through movable magnets; as the device bounces around in your pocket, the magnets slide past the coils and run them through the magnetic fields they need to build electricity. It all sounds grand, but it's hard to tell from the very recent June filing whether the technology is enough to keep devices completely powered or simply delays the inevitable. We'd still suggest getting back into shape, though, in the event that morning run can one day save you from hunting down a wall outlet.Filed under: Cellphones, Portable Audio/VideoApple trying for patent on electromotive charging, could use that confident stride to charge iPhones originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 16:40:00 EDT. In Line For The iPhone 5: Where Have All The Fanbois Gone?

In Line For The iPhone 5: Where Have All The Fanbois Gone?
Today I dropped off TC writer Romain Dillet at Apple's 5th Ave flagship store in New York City, where he'll be waiting in line for the iPhone 5. He'll be bringing you updates from the front lines all day, and through the night, until doors open tomorrow at 8am Eastern. But as I helped him get set up, I noticed something interesting. Everyone in line — about two or three dozen of them at this point — was wearing a branded T-shirt. And no, I don't mean Gucci, American Eagle, or Nike. I mean tech brands, like Vibe, Gazelle, and Otterbox. Aside from Romain, the only other folks in line are either buying the phone for their employer (and being paid to do so) or part of the Occupy Apple (or, more recognizably, Occupy Wall Street) movement. My question, then, is where have all the fanboys gone?

Lazaridis-backed Quantum-Nano Centre opens tomorrow, aims to be a new Bell Labs
Mike Lazaridis may now have a considerably smaller role at RIM, but he's isn't exactly receding from the technology scene in the company's hometown of Waterloo, Ontario. That's no more evident than in the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre opening tomorrow on the University of Waterloo campus, a science and technology research center that not only bears his name but was built with $100 million of his money. As Lazaridis makes clear in an interview with Bloomberg, he's also not modest about his ambitions for the center, noting that it is "absolutely" going to be the Bell Labs of the 21st century. Or, perhaps more specifically, a Bell Labs for quantum computing and nanotechnology, areas of research that Lazaridis says are key in order to "break through those barriers" of traditional computing. You can find the full interview and more details on the center itself at the links below.Filed under: Science, AltLazaridis-backed Quantum-Nano Centre opens tomorrow, aims to be a new Bell Labs originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 16:21:00 EDT. iPhone 5 gets mild teardown, reveals its precious new innards
With Apple's shiny new iPhone 5 set to start arriving at people's doorsteps tomorrow, it's only proper for some folks with early access to give the masses an inside look at what most won't ever get to see. And while it isn't the usual suspects doing the damage favor on this occasion, we still appreciate the iPhone-Garage crew for taking the time to dismantle Cupertino's novel handset. As you can see above, the iPhone 5's innards aren't set up much differently than those of its predecessors, the 4 and 4S, which is to be expected given the similar form factors between them. That said, the battery has found a semi-new home at the front end of the device, while the most obvious change is the headphone jack now being located at the bottom, next to that newfangled Lightning port. There's an extra pic down below for everyone's viewing pleasure, but we recommend checking out the source link to get a better glimpse of the full teardown treatment.Continue reading iPhone 5 gets mild teardown, reveals its precious new innardsFiled under: Cellphones, MisciPhone 5 gets mild teardown, reveals its precious new innards originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 16:00:00 EDT. Facebook revamps Messenger for Android with friendlier chats, teases core app update soon (update 2: iOS refresh as well)

Facebook revamps Messenger for Android with friendlier chats, teases core app update soon (update 2: iOS refresh as well)
Facebook has already been making its mea culpas for the state of its main Android app, and it's showing further atonement through an Android-first update to its Facebook Messenger companion release. The new app is imbued with a "more conversational" (if fairly familiar-looking) bubble-driven layout for chats. Likewise, it's easier to see if a conversation is needed in the first place: a friend status list is always available with a swipe, while fresh support for texting directly from Messenger can keep the discussion flowing when SMS comes into play. Android users can get the Messenger upgrade today, with promise of an iOS equivalent soon. The regular Android app is getting an update as well, although we wouldn't cry with joy just yet: it's more of a parallel to the Messenger update than the speed-up that some of us crave. Update: The company's Christian Legnitto has posted a lengthy explanation that the Messenger rework and the core Facebook update (already available) are part of a new strategy that brings Android and iOS updates at regular intervals, rather than waiting solely for major features. If all goes well, the social network can provide speed upgrades and bug fixes at a much quicker pace. Update 2: And the hits just keep on coming -- although today is mostly about Android, Facebook has tweaked its main app's iOS version (App Store) for iPhone 5 and iOS 6 support.Filed under: Cellphones, Internet, MobileFacebook revamps Messenger for Android with friendlier chats, teases core app update soon (update 2: iOS refresh as well) originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 15:39:00 EDT. Growing Up Geek: Mark Hearn
Welcome to Growing Up Geek, a feature where we take a look back at our youth, and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. This week, we have our very own Mark Hearn! I can vividly recall the first gadget that I ever owned. It was 1986 and I was re-gifted my brother's old Atari 2600. While the cool kids were making Mario run, jump and shoot, I was mastering future classics, such as Mouse Trap and Megamania. A year later my parents bought me a NES for my birthday and it was on like Donkey Kong! I didn't know it then, but the practice of plucking away at 8-bit classics would be the foundation for my love of gizmos and gadgets.Continue reading Growing Up Geek: Mark HearnFiled under: Misc, AltGrowing Up Geek: Mark Hearn originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 15:29:00 EDT. Linux Foundation forms Automotive Grade Workgroup, aims to open-source your ride with Tizen
It doesn't take much driving to notice that many in-car infotainment systems are custom-built and locked down tight. The Linux Foundation sees it differently and wants our cars to embrace the same notions of common roots and open code that we'd find in an Ubuntu box. Its newly-formed Automotive Grade Linux Workgroup is transforming Tizen into a reference platform that car designers can use for the center stack, or even the instrument cluster. The promise is to both optimize a Linux variant for cars and provide the same kind of years-long support that we'd expect for the drivetrain. Technology heavy-hitters like Intel, Harman, NVIDIA, Samsung and TI form the core of the group, although there are already automakers who've signaled their intentions: Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan and Toyota are all part of the initial membership. We don't know how soon we'll be booting into Tizen on the morning commute, but we'd expect in-car systems to take a step forward -- just as long as we don't have to recompile our car's OS kernel.Continue reading Linux Foundation forms Automotive Grade Workgroup, aims to open-source your ride with TizenFiled under: TransportationLinux Foundation forms Automotive Grade Workgroup, aims to open-source your ride with Tizen originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 15:06:00 EDT. iOS 6 Already On 15% Of Devices 24 Hours After Release, Compared To 20% After 5 Days For iOS 5
A new report just released by ad network and data analytics firm Chitika says that Apple's iOS 6 has already been adopted by 15% of eligible iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users, just 24 hours after the operating system's release. The over-the-air nature of the update no doubt helped with that rate of adoption. Chitika also notes that the rate is much higher than Google experienced with its Jelly Bean update, which was on only 1.5% of devices after two full months.

In particular, as a car-less city-dweller myself, I wanted to talk to developers who are filling the gap when it comes to public transit navigation, to find out what they thought about the way it's been implemented, what's coming next, and how all of this will ultimately pan out for users.

ZTE Anthem 4G unveiled for MetroPCS, has us singing a dual-core, LTE tune for $219
Although ZTE is no stranger to the US, it hasn't been as quick to embrace LTE-based 4G as some of its rivals. The new Anthem 4G for MetroPCS puts the company back in sync, and then some. In addition to the faster speeds, the company's first American LTE phone touts a comparatively speedy dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4.3-inch, 800 x 480 screen and perks like HDMI video output with Dolby Surround sound. Our only immediate reservation is the use of Android 2.3, which really shouldn't be on any shipping devices almost two years after it first left Google's doors. Any takers may forgive the old software when they see their bill, though -- the Anthem 4G's $219 contract-free price will put it at the more affordable end of MetroPCS' spectrum when it arrives sometime within the next few weeks.Continue reading ZTE Anthem 4G unveiled for MetroPCS, has us singing a dual-core, LTE tune for $219Filed under: MobileZTE Anthem 4G unveiled for MetroPCS, has us singing a dual-core, LTE tune for $219 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 14:45:00 EDT. Of PlayStation Vita owners, 'almost all' own PlayStation 3 as well

Of PlayStation Vita owners, 'almost all' own PlayStation 3 as well
Sony isn't sharing exact numbers, but Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of marketing, handhelds and home consoles John Koller teased that "almost all" PlayStation Vita owners are also PlayStation 3 owners. We were discussing the potential crossover between Vita and PS3 -- the obvious comparison to Nintendo's latest offering, the Wii U, and its tablet controller. The Vita and the PS3 are capable of producing similar functionality, and, if anything, with higher fidelity, as the Vita is a standalone console. Koller says Sony invites the comparison. "We tell our PlayStation fans all the time that what the Wii U is offering is something that Vita and PS3 can do quite easily," he says. It's not just about the functionality, however, it's about whether implementing that functionality makes any sense. "It's dependent on the content. So we need to make sure the content isn't force fed. And, to us, making sure that the gamer receives the right type of experience is what's most important. So we're gonna pick our spots, but that technology does certainly exist here." It wouldn't be hard to imagine Sony bundling the Vita and its new PS3 model together for holiday sales, pushing up against this holiday's Wii U launch. Koller says not just yet, though. "As we look at the lineup, there are gonna be some opportunities to do that. Whether we want to bundle the hardware together remains to be seen," he explains. It sounds like we'll be hearing more on that front in the future, as "retails asks for it all the time," Koller says. For now, however, he's happy knowing that the vast majority of Vita owners are already prepared for cross-functionality between the two consoles. "In the meantime, you look at the Vita consumer and a very high percentage -- almost all of them -- own a PS3. So you see that crossover works."Filed under: Gaming, HandheldsOf PlayStation Vita owners, 'almost all' own PlayStation 3 as well originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 14:29:00 EDT. Apple patent application has iPhones text when calls don't reach spotty coverage areas

Apple patent application has iPhones text when calls don't reach spotty coverage areas
If you're already using Android 4.0 or iOS 6, you're likely familiar with the option to send a pre-made text reply to incoming calls you can't take. But what if it's your own call that won't go through, at no fault of your own? Apple may have that covered through a patent application that could keep the accusations to a minimum. If flaky reception at the destination prevents your call from connecting, the proposed idea has your iPhone automatically send a text message indicating that you've at least tried to get in touch. Recipients with Apple's hardware contribute to their own solution in this world: the message code is a cue to measure the signal strength and flag the location as a weak point in the carrier's network. Whether or not Apple acts on its concept is as much of a mystery as with most other patents, although we're hoping it becomes real. If anything's going to strain a relationship, it shouldn't be dodgy coverage.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileApple patent application has iPhones text when calls don't reach spotty coverage areas originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 14:15:00 EDT. Giving you the option to Edit your own Aviator headphones isn't the only news the fashionable folks at Skullcandy had up their sleeve for the end of 2012; with a bit of help from Astro Gaming (a recently acquired asset), it's also taking another stab at gaming headsets. The company's touting three new models: SLYR, PLYR 1 and PLYR 2, all of which were quietly detailed on its site within the last week. While Astro caters its full-on gaming audio systems (A30, A40 and A50) above the $200 mark, these Skullcandy-branded headsets essentially bring the ethos of those models to more wallet-friendly prices point of $80 to $180 -- not to mention in closer competition with the likes of Turtle Beach and Tritton. Most notably, Astro was quick to highlight to us that Skullcandy's new batch of gaming-focused earblasters have been created from the ground-up, unlike its models passed which were just tweaks to its existing -- and less than well-received -- headsets. Curious for the initial details on these latest gaming audio aids? The Beginnings Of A Usable Mobile Wallet: Target Brings Mobile Coupons To Apple's Passbook
Not that it should come as a big surprise, given that Target was one of the brands showcased in the Passbook demo at Apple's WWDC in June, but today it's official: Target's app is now Passbook-enabled, the retailer has announced. (Although it actually looks like the update was pushed on Wednesday.) The app joins what is now a fast-growing lineup of apps supporting the new mobile wallet-like feature in iOS 6 called Passbook, out this week. Other big brands also offering Passbook integration include American Airlines, United, MLB, Live Nation, Walgreens and Fandango, to name a few. Target's app, however, is one of the more practical ones, because it offers shoppers the ability to save and store mobile coupons - and couponing is one of Passbook's most important use cases that will eventually help move our society from mobile apps to mobile wallets.

DARPA threat detection technology uses a camera to see targets, software and soldier brains to identify them
DARPA aids our military in myriad ways, from designing one shot, one kill weapons to creating robotic pack mules to carry soldiers' gear. It's also been building tools for soldiers to better survey their environment and identify threats, and its latest such tool is called the Cognitive Technology Threat Warning System (CT2WS). CT2WS is comprised of a 120-megapixel electro-optical video camera with a 120-degree field of view feeding a laptop running cognitive visual processing algorithms. Those algorithms identify potential targets in the video feed, which are shown to a soldier wearing an EEG cap that monitors brain signals. You see, the human brain is particularly good at perceiving threats, and CT2WS looks for the particular brain wave that occurs when we see one. The human component drastically improves the accuracy with which the system can identify enemies from afar. How accurate? Testing in desert, tropical and open terrain showed that without a solider/EEG filter, the system had 810 false alarms out of 2,304 threat events in an hour. Incorporating the filter resulted in only five false alarms per hour, plus it was able to identify 91 percent of the potential targets successfully. Not good enough, you say? Add commercial radar into the mix and the army becomes omniscient -- the system then identified 100 percent of the test targets.Continue reading DARPA threat detection technology uses a camera to see targets, software and soldier brains to identify themFiled under: MiscDARPA threat detection technology uses a camera to see targets, software and soldier brains to identify them originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 13:30:00 EDT.
