Posted: 12 Sep 2012 03:11 PM PDT Hex3 AppTag Laser Blaster turns iPhones and Androids into augmented reality laser tag gun sights (hands-on) ![]() Hex3 AppTag Laser Blaster turns iPhones and Androids into augmented reality laser tag gun sights (hands-on) Nerf's doing it, and so is Hasbro, but there's plenty of room for other folks in the laser tag market, and Hex3 is a startup looking to get in on the action. Called the AppTag Laser Blaster, it combines old school IR-based laser tag with new school augmented reality. Like its aforementioned competition, the gun uses your Android or iPhone (yes, that includes the 5) and a companion app. The app turns your phone into a HUD when playing with friends or an AR window when you're shooting solo.Gallery: Hex3 AppTag Laser Blaster hands-on Where AppTag differs is in how the pistol communicates with your phone. It uses a proprietary high frequency audio signal that requires no pairing or other similar procedures -- you simply load up the app, clamp it to the gun and you're good to go. Additionally, AppTag's removable pistol grip is attached to the gun via a rail mount. That means the system can be attached to existing Nerf weapons and even real firearms should you be so inclined, plus there's a corded pressure switch that you can affix to the trigger of any gun. For now, there are a handful of games included in the app, but Hex3 is releasing an SDK so that developers can get creative building their own using the blaster's four buttons, trigger and reload switch. Interested? AppTag's currently up for pre-order at $59 bucks a pop, with shipping slated to start in 4-6 weeks. Before you part with any hard earned cash, however, check out our video after the break to see in action.Continue reading Hex3 AppTag Laser Blaster turns iPhones and Androids into augmented reality laser tag gun sights (hands-on)Filed under: MiscHex3 AppTag Laser Blaster turns iPhones and Androids into augmented reality laser tag gun sights (hands-on) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 17:16:00 EDT. iPod classic lives to play another day Posted: 12 Sep 2012 02:07 PM PDT iPod classic lives to play another day ![]() iPod classic lives to play another day The more things change, the more they stay the same -- for our old pal the iPod Classic, at least. Sure Apple went and revamped the rest of its music playing brethren, but the HDD stalwart is, as its name implies, staying true to its roots. Death rumors aside, the high-capacity player is sitting pretty over in Apple's online store. Those who need a shot of 160GB nostalgia can still pick one up for $250.Filed under: Handhelds, Home EntertainmentiPod classic lives to play another day originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 16:49:00 EDT. Posted: 12 Sep 2012 02:07 PM PDT Apple EarPods hands-on ![]() Apple EarPods hands-on By now, you're probably familiar with Apple's latest earbuds. But are they an improvement over their arguably disposable predecessor, you ask? You bet. Still, they're not going to win out over high-end or even mid-range audio options. That's to be expected, though -- the EarPods do sound better, and, well, they cost 29 bucks and ship with all of the devices Apple announced today. The attractive white 'buds are packaged in a plastic case that's quite similar to the enclosure that Apple introduced with its previous-gen step-up set. They're very lightweight, not that you had any doubts, and appear to be durable enough. The "one size fits all" design worked well in our ears -- it wasn't a snug fit by any means, but we didn't fear that they'd fall to the ground with the slightest movement. You'll net the best performance in quieter settings, considering that they don't isolate sound like some other options on the market, and if you're a frequent air traveler or often find yourself working in noisy environments, you'll probably want to consider other options. That said, folks who don't need the absolute best or want to save up for a better solution should find these to be sufficient -- we didn't have a chance to do any in-depth testing and analysis, but expect that to come after we've had a chance to digest all of today's new gadgets. For now, you can take a closer look in the hands-on gallery just below.Gallery: Apple EarPods hands-onFiled under: Cellphones, Peripherals, Wearables, MobileApple EarPods hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 16:37:00 EDT. With iOS 6 Integration, Facebook Set To Accelerate Mobile Success Posted: 12 Sep 2012 02:07 PM PDT With iOS 6 Integration, Facebook Set To Accelerate Mobile Success ![]() With iOS 6 Integration, Facebook Set To Accelerate Mobile Success If Passbook is the secret payload in iOS 6 like I suspect, Facebook integration is the more obvious time bomb. Apple has proven in the past that putting social networks deeply into its products results in a big bump: When it added Twitter to iOS in iOS 5, it boosted monthly sign-ups by 25%. Facebook has a lot more users to begin with, so the new sign-ups its inclusion in iOS will deliver isn't likely to be quite as statistically significant. But the Facebook integration isn't about user acquisition, it's about engagement. System-level sharing available to all apps is a huge boon for Facebook's social graph-building efforts. And for users, it's a great convenience feature. |
Apple details LTE plans for iPhone 5: true global reach requires three models Posted: 12 Sep 2012 01:38 PM PDT Apple details LTE plans for iPhone 5: true global reach requires three models ![]() Apple details LTE plans for iPhone 5: true global reach requires three models So the rumors are true, and the iPhone 5 is indeed offering LTE for regions around the globe. This is no small feat, given the plethora of frequencies used by various carriers worldwide. Apple's taken to its official website to discuss in detail its plans for making such a task possible. The new device will come in three different options (excluding color): the A1428 (GSM model) will facilitate LTE for the US (AT&T) and Canada (Rogers, Bell and Telus) on the 700MHz and AWS bands; the CDMA version of the A1429 covers the US (Verizon, Sprint) and Japan (KDDI) using Bands 1, 3, 5, 13 and 25; and the GSM version of the A1429 spans Europe (Germany, UK) and Asia (Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, Japan and Australia) using bands 1, 3 and 5. This certainly prompts a few thoughts. First, if you purchase an A1429 unlocked, you won't be able to use it on AT&T's LTE network or that of any Canadian carriers. You'll still be able to take advantage of the global HSPA+ capability, but its lack of LTE on the Western Hemisphere is important to note. It gives us pause to wonder if we'll see both the A1428 and A1429 sold as unlocked models in North America in case you'd like to have either option. Additionally, it'll be interesting to see what Verizon and Sprint do with the CDMA models -- namely, will these devices allow for global LTE roaming? And will they be unlocked for traveling abroad? We'll get you set up with answers as we hear them, but it may be an influencer on exactly which iPhone 5 option you choose.Filed under: Cellphones, Wireless, MobileApple details LTE plans for iPhone 5: true global reach requires three models originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 16:13:00 EDT. Tesla CEO teases crossover and sports car EVs for 2016 Posted: 12 Sep 2012 01:37 PM PDT Tesla CEO teases crossover and sports car EVs for 2016 ![]() Tesla CEO teases crossover and sports car EVs for 2016 Tesla founder Elon Musk would like to remind you that the Model X isn't the terminus of his company's electric car ambitions. Far from it: Musk tells Wired that Tesla's 2016 plans include both a crossover SUV akin to the BMW X3 as well as a pure sports car that goes beyond just a Roadster redux. The racier vehicle will have speed, but "not supercar pricing," the CEO says. He also elaborated on already-known plans for an 'entry' sedan in 2015, which should resemble a 20 to 25 percent smaller Model S and cost about $30,000 if all goes well. There's a wide gap between promises and reality in all those statements, but Musk has a reputation for largely delivering on target -- which gives us hope that there will finally be Tesla EVs within range of everyday budgets.Filed under: TransportationTesla CEO teases crossover and sports car EVs for 2016 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 16:11:00 EDT. SB LiMotive, the Bosch-Samsung SDI joint-venture created to produce lithium-ion batteries for electric-drive vehicles, will be dissolved once its current contract obligations are satisfied. Bosch will take over all battery-systems operations and is looking to expand battery production in Europe. Each company will give the other access to its patents. Early last year, the partnership began production at a South Korea factory with plans on doubling output by 2015. Partnership executives also told Ward's Auto at the time that it was looking into opening plants in Europe and North America. The BMW ActiveE and the Fiat 500 EV were among contracts the partnership won for lithium-ion battery production. SB LiMotive began operations in September 2008. By a pretty notable margin. Picking up the iPhone 5 is almost jarring -- it's barely heavy enough to feel "premium," and it'll probably make you handle it with care for free of breaking it in half with too tight a tug. The new Dock Connector -- also known as Lightning -- is most certainly smaller, and looks most at home on the new iPod nano. Without further qualifying, have a look at the comparison gallery below. Posted: 12 Sep 2012 01:04 PM PDT Microsoft announces Windows Phone 8 SDK preview program, Windows Phone Store replaces Marketplace ![]() Microsoft announces Windows Phone 8 SDK preview program, Windows Phone Store replaces Marketplace Naturally, there's a good amount of anticipation surrounding the release of Windows Phone 8 handsets, but before that day arrives, developers will need proper software to code apps. Microsoft stopped short of releasing the requisite tools, but today, the company announced the Windows Phone 8 SDK preview program -- essentially a way for developers to get in line for when the software becomes available. As is, all developers must submit an application to the Microsoft Connect website by Monday, September 17th, at which point, they'll be provided instructions "the following week" of how and where to download the SDK. As for why the company has stopped short of an immediate release, Microsoft blames it on the fact that not all Windows Phone 8 features have been announced -- which gives us reason to hope we'll see a full disclosure in the near term. In related news, the Redmond giant has also revealed that the Marketplace will be renamed the Windows Phone Store, which is intended to harmonize the naming scheme with the Windows Store. It'll first rear its head in both Australia and New Zealand, but the company promises to roll out the new storefront to other countries in the weeks ahead. As for what you can expect, a cleaner design and new menu options are said to be in the mix, along with news and reviews from various technology blogs and journalists. Other improvements will include new search functionality to account for typos, along with suggestions for similar apps, regardless of what's in the title. 7th-generation iPod nano hands-on! Posted: 12 Sep 2012 12:32 PM PDT 7th-generation iPod nano hands-on! ![]() 7th-generation iPod nano hands-on! Not to be outdone by a refreshed iPod touch (and, let's face it, a new iPhone), Apple also shot out a 5.4mm-thick iPod nano today -- that's 38 percent thinner than the one it replaces. We just got our hands on the newest, tiniest music player outside of Apple's product launch today, replete with a 2.5-inch multitouch panel and a familiar Home button. As you'd expect, the enlarged display is hugely beneficial. While there's no bona fide version of iOS on here, the stripped-down variant seems sufficient for handling media alone. As if the ability to watch widescreen video wasn't enough, fitness gurus are also apt to take notice -- inbuilt support for Nike+ gear, along with Bluetooth, make this one potent device. The Lightning connector seems to make a lot of sense here, given the dearth of real estate along the bottom, but somehow the company squeezed a big enough battery in here to net some 30 reported hours of battery life. In playing with it, we found screen transitions to be adequately smooth, and video playback was surprisingly enjoyable to watch.Gallery: 7th-generation iPod nano hands-onContinue reading 7th-generation iPod nano hands-on!Filed under: Handhelds, Portable Audio/Video7th-generation iPod nano hands-on! originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 15:15:00 EDT. Sure enough, the leaks were right once more -- Apple is relying on that even tinier subscriber module for GSM, HSPA and LTE networks. 5th-generation iPod touch hands-on! Posted: 12 Sep 2012 12:32 PM PDT 5th-generation iPod touch hands-on! ![]() 5th-generation iPod touch hands-on! It's obvious that the iPhone 5 is the star of today's show, but Apple's not letting its iPod line go untouched. The newest iPod touch takes a note from the newfangled display on its cellular sibling, bringing a vaster panel (the same 4-inch, 1,136 x 640 one found on the new iPhone). At 88 grams and just 6.1mm thick, it's also shockingly thin and light -- of course, the anodized aluminum backing makes it feel like a premium piece of kit. Premium, as in, right up there with the iPhone. In a world where Apple's seeing its iPod sales sink quarter after quarter due to self-cannibalization from the iPad and iPhone, it's interesting (but appreciated) to see so much effort placed on the new iPod touch. The introduction of the dual-core A5 chip (that's dual-core on the CPU and the graphics side) is a huge boon for the touch. Apple's claiming a 7x improvement in graphics, and given that this thing is claiming such a huge swath of the mobile gaming market, it's pretty much a necessity. Indeed, our interactions with the device were notably faster than on the prior iTouch. We didn't exactly have 40 hours here to test the audio playback claims (in fact, we didn't even have eight to test the claims on video), but you can bet that'll be a huge selling point.Gallery: 5th-generation iPod touch hands-onContinue reading 5th-generation iPod touch hands-on!Filed under: Handhelds5th-generation iPod touch hands-on! originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 15:09:00 EDT. Posted: 12 Sep 2012 12:32 PM PDT iPhone 5 hands-on! ![]() iPhone 5 hands-on! At long last, the iPhone 5. We just got our hands on Apple's latest smartphone following its unveiling in San Francisco, and suffice it to say, it's a beautiful thing. Some might say we've been waiting for this moment since October 4th of last year, but another crowd may say that the real next-gen iPhone has been on the burner for much longer. Indeed, this is the first iPhone since June of 2010 to showcase an entirely new design, but it's obvious that Apple's not going to deviate far when it comes to aesthetics. Apple followers will aptly recall Steve Jobs' quote in July of 2010 -- you know, that one about "no one" wanting a big phone, with current CEO Tim Cook seated just feet from Steve as the phrase was uttered. Now, however, Apple's inching ever closer to that very realm, with an elongated 4-inch display that enables new apps to take advantage of more pixels (1,136 x 640), while legacy apps can still operate within a familiar space. The phone itself doesn't feel too much different than the iPhone 4 and 4S; yes, it's a bit taller, but by keeping the width the same, you'll utilize a very familiar grasp to hold it. In typical Apple fashion, even the finest details have been worked over tirelessly. The metal feels downright elegant to the touch, and the same line we've said time and time again applies here: there's no doubting the premium fit and finish when you clutch one of these thing. Yeah, the headphone port's now on the bottom, but avid Galaxy Nexus iPod touch users shouldn't have too much trouble adjusting. Apple’s New Nano-SIM: Freeing Up Valuable Space Inside The Case Posted: 12 Sep 2012 12:00 PM PDT Apple's New Nano-SIM: Freeing Up Valuable Space Inside The Case ![]() Apple's New Nano-SIM: Freeing Up Valuable Space Inside The Case Apple managed to get a new standard for SIM cards approved by the European Telecommunications Institute (ETSI) back in June, and today we see the result of that effort. The new nano-SIM is 44 percent smaller than existing micro-SIM designs, which may not seem significant in something already so small, but which could ultimately give Apple a lot more to work with. When it comes to adding more battery or new radios to the iPhone, the key to getting it done is freeing up space taken up by other elements. The nano-SIM does just that. |

Apple's infamous earbuds rebranded for iPhone 5 as 'EarPods' Posted: 12 Sep 2012 11:59 AM PDT Apple's infamous earbuds rebranded for iPhone 5 as 'EarPods' ![]() Apple's infamous earbuds rebranded for iPhone 5 as 'EarPods' Yes, finally -- finally -- Apple's years-long headphone debacle may finally be at an end, with the introduction this morning of redesigned earbuds. Their new name: "EarPods." Like so many things from today's Apple press conference, the new earphones look an awful lot like a leak we saw earlier this month. Apple says the new earphones feature, "a breakthrough design for a more natural fit and increased durability, and an incredible acoustic quality typically reserved for higher-end earphones." As seen above, they feature dual grills on each "pod," and the iPhone version has an in-line microphone built-in along the wire. The EarPods feature a speaker port directed into your ear canal and look starkly different from past Apple earphone offerings -- no rubber, distinctly less visible metal, and an all-plastic outer shell. There are apparently three separate ports handling audio delivery, with the intention of maximizing airflow for sound quality. They're available today for purchase as a standalone, and will ship with the new iPod Touch, Nano, and iPhone 5. No pricing was given for the standalone set.Gallery: Apple's infamous earbuds rebranded for iPhone 5 as 'EarPods'Filed under: Cellphones, Peripherals, Tablets, MobileApple's infamous earbuds rebranded for iPhone 5 as 'EarPods' originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 14:27:00 EDT. Posted: 12 Sep 2012 11:59 AM PDT Apple announces fifth-generation iPod touch: 4-inch screen, 6.1mm thick, Siri included ![]() Apple announces fifth-generation iPod touch: 4-inch screen, 6.1mm thick, Siri included Today at its iPhone launch event, Apple announced yet another piece of hardware: the fifth-generation iPod touch. As rumored, it has a 4-inch display, the same 326 ppi panel used on the new iPhone 5. As you might have guessed, this is also the thinnest iPod touch to date, measuring in at 6.1mm and weighing 88 grams (3.1 ounces). On the inside, it packs an A5 chip promising seven times the graphics performance of the last-gen model. The battery is rated for 40 hours of music playback, or eight hours of video. The rear camera has also gotten an upgrade: it's now built on a 5-megapixel sensor, paired with a backside-illuminated f/2.4 lens. It also now shoots 1080p video, and Apple has also added image stabilization. And yes, it supports the same panorama shooting feature as the iPhone 5. The front camera, meanwhile, is 720p and supports FaceTime (over WiFi only, of course -- no 4G models here). If that image stabilization feature doesn't do it for you, there's also a protruding button on the back, to which you can attach a wrist strap -- you know, so that if the shakes get really bad you at least won't drop the thing. Perhaps the biggest news, though, is that the new iPod touch has Siri built in, making it the first non-iPhone device from Apple to get this feature. Finally, it comes loaded with iO6 and if you don't know what that entails, well, we've got your feature summary right here. The iPod touch will be available in two flavors: a 32GB model ($299) and a 64GB number ($399). It will be sold in five colors: "raw aluminum," black, blue, yellow and red, and a (PRODUCT) RED version will also be available. Three hundred bucks too pricey for your next PMP? The last-generation touch will remain on the market, with the 16GB one going for $199 and the 32GB version selling for $249.Gallery: iPod touch (2012)Gallery: iPod Touch 5th generation Check out our liveblog of Apple's event to get the latest news as it happens!Continue reading Apple announces fifth-generation iPod touch: 4-inch screen, 6.1mm thick, Siri includedApple announces fifth-generation iPod touch: 4-inch screen, 6.1mm thick, Siri included originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 14:20:00 EDT. Smith Electric Vehicles preparing for IPO and good cash flow Posted: 12 Sep 2012 11:27 AM PDT Smith Electric Vehicles preparing for IPO and good cash flow ![]() Smith Electric Vehicles preparing for IPO and good cash flow Filed under: EV/Plug-in, UKSmith Electric Vehicles has been patiently waiting to go public on Wall Street, and the time might soon arrive. The Kansas City, MO-based maker of electric delivery vehicles supplies trucks to clients such as Coca-Cola, FedEx Corp. and DHL, and filed for its initial public offering in November. UBS Investment Bank, Deutsche Bank Securities and Barclays are lead underwriters for the deal, which is expected to contain 4.45 million shares at between $16 and $18 in its IPO. Smith Electric Vehicles expects to sell 4.2 million of those shares in the offering (selling stock holders will offer the rest) and the Nasdaq IPO is expected to bring in about $76 million. The proceeds raised will primarily be used for paying down debt. The U.S.-based company was purchased in 2011 from its UK-based parent company, which has been in operation in Europe since the 1920s. Smith Electric Vehicles puts out the Smith Newton and Smith Edison electric vehicles, which can be configured for multiple applications. They're built at manufacturing facility in Kansas City and outside of Newcastle, UK. The public stock sales date has not yet been provided, and the funding has been needed for a while. Last year, Smith reported a net loss of $52.5 million on $49.9 million in revenue, and said it lost $27.3 million in the first six months of this year, compared with $21.2 million during the same period last year. They're being bought as fleet trucks by several companies, but they are costing more than comparable diesel-powered vehicles. Going public can be very good for an EV maker to become profitable, but it does take a lot of hard work, creativity, and dedication.Smith Electric Vehicles preparing for IPO and good cash flow originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 12 Sep 2012 13:57:00 EST. The latter will be making its debut with iOS 6 on the 19th. You can expect a simpler interface in all incarnations -- "dramatically simpler," according to Apple's Eddie Cue -- with a carousel up top paired with a flattened grid of icons below. The desktop version also sports a new mini player, which now boasts search functionality while staying decidedly minimalistic. Those changes naturally extend to the store component as well, and Apple is also promising improved performance throughout.
