Republic Project Lands $1M From Google Ventures For Full Service Ad Campaign Pla... Posted: 11 Sep 2012 03:25 PM PDT Republic Project Lands $1M From Google Ventures For Full Service Ad Campaign Platform ![]() Republic Project Lands $1M From Google Ventures For Full Service Ad Campaign Platform Back in 2009, Republic Project launched to give bands and labels a platform to sell pre-orders of new music direct to fans, while receiving 100 percent of the revenue. The platform essentially provided bands with a widget they could embed on their websites, blogs and social networks to share exclusive video from the road, the studio, and so on. While the idea found a bit of traction with bands, the startup saw greater potential in taking its core technology and turning it into a platform with a broader appeal, so it went back to the drawing board. Three years later, Republic project is emerging with a completely new look (and mission), relaunching as an online ad campaign creation platform. And today, the startup is also announcing that this new incarnation has attracted $1 million in series A financing, led by Google Ventures. Also contributing to the round were 500 Startups, Venture51, Ludlow Ventures, Maneesh Arora of MightyText and Andrew Reis. |
Arcimoto will build 15 EVs for more testing Posted: 11 Sep 2012 02:52 PM PDT Arcimoto will build 15 EVs for more testing ![]() Arcimoto will build 15 EVs for more testing Filed under: EV/Plug-in Now, more on whether Arcimoto will become the little electric motor that could. The Oregon-based maker of three-wheeled battery-electric vehicles, is planning to build a pilot fleet of 15 vehicles, the company said in its newsletter last month. The company said it benefitted from exhibiting the EV at the EVS26 conference in Los Angeles in May, and made "lots of good contacts at the show for vehicle parts, solidifying some of our component decisions as we head into pilot build." All that doesn't add up to an official launch date, though. Last December, Oregon-based Arcimoto said it was testing the Generation 6 version of the EV, which it said was smaller and had both a lower profile and shorter wheelbase than prior versions, cutting both weight and drag. The fifth-generation Arcimoto was said to have a 40-mile single-charge range from its lead-acid battery and a 65-mile-per-hour top speed. Previously, the launch price has been estimated at about $17,500.Arcimoto will build 15 EVs for more testing originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 17:46:00 EST. Sony VG900 leaks, packs full-frame sensor into a NEX camcorder Posted: 11 Sep 2012 02:52 PM PDT Sony VG900 leaks, packs full-frame sensor into a NEX camcorder ![]() Sony VG900 leaks, packs full-frame sensor into a NEX camcorder Sony must have a fixation on stuffing full-frame sensors into small spaces this year. A fresh photo and details slipping out to Sony Alpha Rumors show what's billed as the VG900, the first NEX-branded camcorder with a sensor larger than the APS-C spec -- the first NEX camera of any kind, for that matter. While there's only a light smattering of details, we're told the device has a 24-megapixel sensor (likely the same as in the RX1 or A99), records video in AVCHD 2.0 and should ship with an A-mount adapter for Alpha lenses. Not much else is on display, although you may want to take a pass if you're just looking to record a family wedding: at a rumored $3,300 price for the purportedly imminent launch, the VG900 isn't an impulse purchase for anyone short of a pro videographer.Filed under: CamerasSony VG900 leaks, packs full-frame sensor into a NEX camcorder originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 17:47:00 EDT. Previously, only those with company accounts were able to submit their applications for consideration in the Windows Store. The big news doesn't end there, however, as Microsoft has also added 82 new markets for app submission, which means that in total, developers from 120 markets may now publish their applications to the Windows Store. In additional news, Microsoft has also revealed that many MSDN subscribers will receive a free, one-year developer account to the Windows Store -- eligible subscription levels include Visual Studio Professional, Test Professional, Premium, Ultimate, and BizSpark. Similarly, students that take part in Microsoft's DreamSpark program will have their subscription fees waived. As it stands, both Windows 8 apps and traditional applications may be submitted for inclusion in the Windows Store, however in the case of applications for the desktop environment, purchasers will be re-routed to individual developer sites to make their purchase and grab the download.Filed under: SoftwareMicrosoft opens Windows Store app submissions to individuals, welcomes devs from 82 new markets originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 16:19:00 EDT. Apple took the top prize for manufacturers, seeing 31.38% (vs. 28.32% last quarter) of overall device impressions, and the iPhone was the top device, with 15.84% (up slightly from 15.10% in Q1) of the share, compared to just 4.96% for the next closest handset, RIM's BlackBerry Curve. |
Tesla Model S will get update for 'creep' mode, Service Center costs detailed Posted: 11 Sep 2012 01:18 PM PDT Tesla Model S will get update for 'creep' mode, Service Center costs detailed ![]() Tesla Model S will get update for 'creep' mode, Service Center costs detailed Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors With a vehicle as potentially paradigm-shifting as the Model S, you've got to have the service to match. That's why Tesla Motors is rolling out what it calls a "transformed service experience." "Moving beyond automobile service of the past 100 years means bringing service to you in a new way," wrote Joost de Vries, vice president of global service, on the company's official blog. Tesla will be nearly tripling the number of Tesla Service Centers so more customers have them close by. Since customers have reserved the Model S in advance, Tesla says it knows where the first 12,200 cars will be delivered. Based on the expansion map, over 90 percent of current Model S reservation holders in North America will be within 100 miles of a center, and more than 80 percent will be within 50 miles, de Vries writes. These service centers probably more like labs than what most car owners are used to seeing - the "floors are spotless and the air is free of exhaust." If Model S owners can't make it to the service center, they can call the Tesla Rangers. The Rangers will visit an owners home or office and can provide any service offering that doesn't require a service lift. During a scheduled annual inspection (or after 12,500 miles), a service technician will spend several hours conducting a full assessment of vehicle components including brakes, tires, suspension, steering, lighting, and safety components. Tesla's service department will regularly receive updates on how the car is performing. If the diagnostics find a potential issue, it can alert Tesla's service team and a message may pop up on the instrument panel to alert the driver. The Model S has software designed to control this functionality, and many of its service interactions will be in the form of a software update using the car's Internet connection or a wifi network. This connectivity means that service enhancements can be installed remotely. Tesla is working on updates that will include a speed warning that chimes, additional stereo system settings, and memory seat functionality. Some of these enhancements are coming through customer feedback. One example of drivers telling Tesla what they want of their car: the Model S will soon get an update that will allow forward 'creep' when you remove your foot from the brake. Tesla heard this feedback during the recent Get Amped tour. So, what will all of this service cost the Model S owner? In North America, a one-year (or 12,500-mile) service plan costs $600 and covers annual inspection and all wear and tear parts, excluding tires. A pre-paid four-year service plan is available for $1,900 and includes four annual inspections up to 50,000 miles. Ranger visits cost a $100 flat fee per visit, and there is a combined plan that includes "Tesla Service and unlimited Ranger Service for four years or 50,000 miles for $2,400." Or, as it's know in Tesla costs, two High Power Wall Connectors.Tesla Model S will get update for 'creep' mode, Service Center costs detailed originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 15:59:00 EST. Xcom Global launches LTE data for travelers at $18 a day, starting in Japan Posted: 11 Sep 2012 12:47 PM PDT Xcom Global launches LTE data for travelers at $18 a day, starting in Japan ![]() Xcom Global launches LTE data for travelers at $18 a day, starting in Japan Xcom Global has been busy carving out a reputation as the world traveler's best friend, but that globetrotter has always had to make do with 3G even if there was 4G back home. As of September 20th, frequent roamers of the sort will have access to LTE when abroad -- at least, if they're planning a trip to the Land of the Rising Sun. A deal between Xcom and EMOBILE will let visitors to Japan get up to 75Mbps by renting a Huawei GL01P hotspot to the tune of $18 a day, up slightly from Xcom's usual $15. The pocket router won't work in other countries, but it will supply dual-carrier HSPA+ 3G if travelers wander outside of the fastest coverage areas. Not planning a trip to Osaka? We're told Xcom plans to expand its LTE option to Europe at some point in the future, starting with the UK -- good timing, that.Filed under: Wireless, Networking, MobileXcom Global launches LTE data for travelers at $18 a day, starting in Japan originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 15:23:00 EDT. Posted: 11 Sep 2012 12:11 PM PDT Boston Dynamics shows a quieter, more thoroughbred AlphaDog to DARPA and the Marines (video) ![]() Boston Dynamics shows a quieter, more thoroughbred AlphaDog to DARPA and the Marines (video) When we last saw Boston Dynamics' AlphaDog (aka LS3), it was strutting through outdoor trials with the subtlety of a nuclear missile: for all that noise, it might as well have been holding a "shoot here please" sign broadcasting American soldiers' positions to everyone in the forest. Several months later, the company is showing both DARPA and the Marine Corps a refined version of its load-carrying robot that has clearly been through a few rounds of obedience school. While we still wouldn't call the four-legged hauler stealthy, it's quiet enough to avoid the role of bullet magnet and lets nearby troops chat at reasonable volumes. And yes, there's new tricks as well. AlphaDog can speed up its travel over difficult surfaces and move at up to a 5MPH jog, all while it's following a human squad. DARPA and the Marines recently began testing and improving the robot over a two-year period that should culminate in an Advanced Warfighting Experiment with the Marines to test viability under stress. If AlphaDog passes that bar, there's a good chance many on-foot soldiers will have a mechanical companion -- and quite a weight lifted off of their shoulders.Continue reading Boston Dynamics shows a quieter, more thoroughbred AlphaDog to DARPA and the Marines (video)Filed under: RobotsBoston Dynamics shows a quieter, more thoroughbred AlphaDog to DARPA and the Marines (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 14:56:00 EDT. New Enerdel CEO: Shifting away from EVs means profits in late 2013, or maybe 2014 Posted: 11 Sep 2012 11:41 AM PDT New Enerdel CEO: Shifting away from EVs means profits in late 2013, or maybe 2014 ![]() New Enerdel CEO: Shifting away from EVs means profits in late 2013, or maybe 2014 Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Hydrogen For companies in the lithium battery business, multi-segment marketing has become a necessity. A few years ago, electric vehicles looked like the next smartphone-like growth area for battery makers. Now, it's more turmoil than profits for some battery makers.David Roberts is CEO of one of these companies - EnerDel Inc. EnerDel used to be a part of Ener1 prior to its bankruptcy that was caused by being so tied down after taking on a stake in Norweigan EV maker Think, which had its own downward spiral. EnerDel's new focus is to not count on electric vehicles to turn in profits, because EnerDel doesn't expect EV sales to be strong in the next few years. The battery maker will continue to monitor the EV industry, but the time has passed to rely on it as a big money maker. Instead, EnerDel, based in Indianapolis, is now looking more at commercial accounts that would buy batteries for grid storage, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, and home energy storage. One such client is the Alamada County, CA, transit authority, which uses EnerDel batteries to store electricity in its fuel-cell buses. Being creative and willing to travel abroad has brought in a Russian utility company and Japanese convenience store owners worried about living through another earthquake. This is all good news for the battery maker, but even before it ran into financial troubles, EnerDel was thinking about stationary energy storage. With the new focus on diversity, Roberts says he sees EnerDel becoming profitable next year - or by 2014 at the latest. The company is not divorced from electric cars - in fact, EnerDel is continuing a relationship started by Ener1 in 2009 with Volvo to power the electric version of its C30. "We'd love to have 10 more like that," Roberts said. Today, EnerDel is not doing any business with Think.New Enerdel CEO: Shifting away from EVs means profits in late 2013, or maybe 2014 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 13:54:00 EST. Posted: 11 Sep 2012 11:41 AM PDT Sony Xperia V packs new sensor-on-lens touchscreen tech, promises a 'true direct touch experience' ![]() Sony Xperia V packs new sensor-on-lens touchscreen tech, promises a 'true direct touch experience' If you thought LG's Optimus G and Nokia's Lumia 920 had future touchscreen tech all sewn up, then be ready to welcome Sony's own contribution. Its sensor-on-lens touchscreen will debut on the Xperia V, combining the sensor and lens component of a standard capacitive display, reducing the number of layers, glare and other interference. This improves both image quality and the screen's responsiveness -- Sony reckons the experience brings it in line with the aforementioned on- and in-cell touch display technology. During our brief hands-on at IFA, we found the Xperia V was certainly responsive enough, but perhaps some of that sensation can be attributed to the new screen, rather than the dual-core Snapdragon processor powering it. We'll be sure to give it a thorough testing when our review model appears.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileSony Xperia V packs new sensor-on-lens touchscreen tech, promises a 'true direct touch experience' originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 14:30:00 EDT. Beyond the usual features of the Vita, the 3G model offers access to various social networks while on-the-go, as well as a handful of games that support asynchronous multiplayer via 3G. Mostly, though, it just offers a $50 bump to the usual Vita price of $250 (at least in the US). In Canada, however, the 3G version is getting bundled with Gravity Rush and Unit 13, and the whole shebang is launching on October 2 for $299.99. It's unclear how much the unit will cost as a standalone (or if it's even being offered that way), but we've asked Sony Canada for more info. 3G plans with Rogers run $15 and $30 for 30-day packages bundling 250MB or 5GB data streams, respectively.Filed under: Gaming, Mobile3G Vita headed to Canada via Rogers on Oct. 2, Canadian gamers remain non-plussed originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 14:13:00 EDT. The money will help Sōsh expand to new cities, taking flight from its home territory of San Francisco with a carefully staged rollout that will likely begin with New York City next. What Sōsh provides are recommendations not only about venues like the kind you'd be able to find from crowdsourced efforts like Yelp, but about specific activities, events and services that you'd be likely to actually attend or use. It combines data analysis efforts and algorithmic recommendations with human-curated selection to pare down the wealth of things to do in any given city to effectively a top 15 percent that should actually be relevant and high-quality. |
Social Travel Startup WeHostels Embraces Mobile With New iPhone App Posted: 11 Sep 2012 11:08 AM PDT Social Travel Startup WeHostels Embraces Mobile With New iPhone App ![]() Social Travel Startup WeHostels Embraces Mobile With New iPhone App We wrote about WeHostels (under its old name InBed.me) back in March, when it offered a social booking website for hostels and was planning to launch on mobile. Now, the company has released an iPhone app. In fact, CEO Diego Saez-Gil tells me that the team decided, "We have to go all in on mobile," so it shut down its website. Why the shift? Apparently, even before the app launched, traffic was growing 10 times faster on mobile than it was on the web, so WeHostels decided to focus and try to create the best mobile experience possible. The mobile use case is different from the desktop one, Seaz-Gil says, and it's something that other companies haven't really cracked yet. |
Tesla details service plans, software updates for Model S Posted: 11 Sep 2012 11:08 AM PDT Tesla details service plans, software updates for Model S ![]() Tesla details service plans, software updates for Model S So you drop $50,000+ on a Tesla Model S -- then what? The all-electric automaker offered some more details on what folks can expect in the ensuing years on its blog this week, detailing service plans and software updates, and what it'll all cost. On that latter point, you can expect to pay $600 for a basic one-year service plan, or opt for a four-year package that'll set you back $1900 -- on-site visits are available for an extra $100, or as part of a four-year, $2400 plan that includes unlimited on-site visits. To provide that service, Tesla has also announced that it's nearly tripling its number of service centers, which it says will mean there's a service center within 100 miles of more than 90 percent of Model S reservation holders. What's more, it's also offered some details on what those owners will see in future software updates, including an optional "creep" mode that will mimic the slow, forward roll of a car with an automatic transmission. Benchmark’s Matt Cohler: Ads On Mobile Will Be Better Than On The Web, More Like TV Posted: 11 Sep 2012 11:08 AM PDT Benchmark's Matt Cohler: Ads On Mobile Will Be Better Than On The Web, More Like TV ![]() Benchmark's Matt Cohler: Ads On Mobile Will Be Better Than On The Web, More Like TV Mobile looks like a threat to the growth of Facebook's profits, because advertisers aren't spending much and users aren't enjoying the experience. But Matt Cohler, thinks that mobile ads are going to be huge, "bigger than the web." Formerly a Facebook executive and now a general partner with Benchmark Capital, he compares the mobile ad experience to television. "It's a lot more like a TV than a web browser ever was," he says in an interview with Michael Arrington today at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco. "[With the web] you'd get 12 different things going on at the same time. It's not that immersive. The smartphone is one screen for the user to focus on, in a device they have a deep emotional connection to." |

Of course, Sony's effort doesn't also offer head tracking, but, again, it's much nicer looking, so we're willing to excuse major technical differences. A whole litany of games will be playable with the "HMZ-T2" device at TGS, from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to Assassin's Creed 3 (some games are only demoable with the HMZ device, oddly). Gartner: Free apps dominate market, iOS App Store accounts for 25% of all downloads Posted: 11 Sep 2012 10:36 AM PDT Gartner: Free apps dominate market, iOS App Store accounts for 25% of all downloads ![]() Gartner: Free apps dominate market, iOS App Store accounts for 25% of all downloads If you'd just put down Angry Birds Space for a moment, maybe we could tell you that mobile apps are kind of a big deal. How big of a deal? How's about 45.6 billion downloads just this year -- that's a serious amount of birds lost in space! All of those downloads weren't just Angry Birds venturing into the final frontier, of course. Gartner, Inc's latest mobile report doesn't actually break down how much of that enormous number pertains to Rovio's hit franchise, but it does note that "free apps will account for nearly 90 percent of total mobile app store downloads in 2012." That means of the nearly 46 billion apps downloaded this year, approximately 40.6 billion were free. Additionally, an entire quarter of the apps downloaded in 2012 were via Apple's iOS app store -- but that isn't what's driving app growth, necessarily. "The number of apps available is driven by an increasing number of stores in the market today," Gartner research director Brian Blau notes. "These stores will see their combined share of total downloads increase, but demand for apps overall will still be dominated by Apple, Google, and Microsoft." And the growth doesn't stop there. Blau predicts that 93 percent of all apps downloads will be of the free variety by 2016 -- also, we'll be downloading over 300 billion apps worldwide by the same year. Like we said, kind of a big deal.Filed under: Cellphones, Gaming, Tablets, Software, MobileGartner: Free apps dominate market, iOS App Store accounts for 25% of all downloads originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 13:17:00 EDT. "If you're a social game and you need to calculate the top 10 scores every day for a leaderboard, or if you're a chat application and want to let people manage their chat room, this lets you use snippets of JavaScript that run on our servers," said co-founder Ilya Sukhar. "You don't have to think about actual servers. We can handle the top-to-bottom integration." |
Go Daddy: yesterday's outage resolved, 'was not a hack' Posted: 11 Sep 2012 10:04 AM PDT Go Daddy: yesterday's outage resolved, 'was not a hack' ![]() Go Daddy: yesterday's outage resolved, 'was not a hack' According to domain registrar Go Daddy, things are back to normal after yesterday's massive outage. The company noted that service outages started at around 1PM ET, with service being "fully restored" by 7PM. Contrary to claims of an attack from hackers, the company's interim CEO Scott Wagner insists that the outage "was not a 'hack' and it was not a denial of service attack (DDoS)." Instead, Go Daddy is chalking the problem up to "a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables," adding that the company has taken steps to avoid a repeat of the problem. According to Wagner, data was never at risk during yesterday's issue.Filed under: InternetGo Daddy: yesterday's outage resolved, 'was not a hack' originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 12:40:00 EDT. Dashlane’s Password Management Service Now Alerts Users When Their Accounts May... Posted: 11 Sep 2012 10:04 AM PDT Dashlane's Password Management Service Now Alerts Users When Their Accounts May Be Hacked ![]() Dashlane's Password Management Service Now Alerts Users When Their Accounts May Be Hacked Dashlane, a desktop and mobile app which helps you login to websites, fill out forms and speed through checkout faster, has launched a new feature which will alert you if one of your web accounts may have been compromised. This addresses a growing need, as high profile hacks like those at companies like Zappos, LinkedIn, Dropbox and others seem to be making the news every few weeks. With a feature Dashlane is simply calling "Security Breach Alerts," the idea is to offer users the online equivalent of the phone call from your bank when it's suspected your credit or debit card may have been stolen. Dashlane thinks that online users should have the same sense of protection. |
Xiaomi Phone 2 pre-production units available on September 22nd, limited to 600... Posted: 11 Sep 2012 10:04 AM PDT Xiaomi Phone 2 pre-production units available on September 22nd, limited to 600 lucky buyers ![]() Xiaomi Phone 2 pre-production units available on September 22nd, limited to 600 lucky buyers Much like the run-up to the previous flagship product launch, Qualcomm-backed Xiaomi has just announced that it'll be selling a small batch of pre-production second-gen Xiaomi Phones, in the hopes to get some keen users to perform last-minute checks before mass production. To be exact, only 600 of these quad-core Jelly Bean phones will be made available online at local time 10am on September 22nd (that's 10pm ET on the 21st); and even if you have CN¥1,999 ($310) to spare, you'll still need to be one of the 1,200 expert members from the Xiaomi and MIUI online communities to be able to hit the "order" button. Nice hype drive, if you ask us. Later on, successful buyers can simply swap their engineering units in for a final version of the 16GB or 32GB Xiaomi Phone 2 -- the latter a new addition that co-founder Lei Jun announced on Sina Weibo last Saturday (where he also cheekily asked if anyone need a 64GB flavor). For those who qualify but would rather avoid the digital bloodshed next week, we suggest you wait until the official Chinese launch in the second-half of October; or try Taiwan by the end of the year.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileXiaomi Phone 2 pre-production units available on September 22nd, limited to 600 lucky buyers originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Sep 2012 11:56:00 EDT.
