POD Point expanding electric vehicle charging options in Scandanavia Posted: 25 Jul 2012 03:06 PM PDT POD Point expanding electric vehicle charging options in Scandanavia ![]() POD Point expanding electric vehicle charging options in Scandanavia Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Europe/EU, UK There must be something about Scandinavia that makes people think about electric cars. Last year, for example, the UK-based EV charging station company Pod Point found that, out of the all the 400-plus public chargers in London, the most popular was at the local IKEA store. And, of course, Think was originally a Norwegian company and, for a while, built cars in Finland. Today Pod Point announced a plan to expand throughout Scandinavia with "a series of strategic partnerships with energy and electricity supply companies and automotive manufacturers." Pod Point calls Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, "Europe's most advanced electric vehicle markets" and will therefore work with "utility company Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk AS (NTE), electrical supply company Proxll AS, and Nissan dealerships across the Nordic countries" on the expansion. With NTE, Pod Point will help install the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) software. This allows charging stations from different companies to communicate and "is fast becoming the European industry standard." POD Point CEO Erik Fairbairn said in a statement that: "The market is currently dominated by a handful of hardware providers, each with their own proprietary back office systems and software. This model is not sustainable - customers will expect interoperability and choice of software independent of charge point hardware." Pod Point is the recommended charge point supplier for the Toyota Prius Plug-In in Europe.Continue reading POD Point expanding electric vehicle charging options in ScandanaviaPOD Point expanding electric vehicle charging options in Scandanavia originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 18:01:00 EST. This is the Modem World: So what's with the tech backlash thing? Posted: 25 Jul 2012 03:06 PM PDT This is the Modem World: So what's with the tech backlash thing? ![]() This is the Modem World: So what's with the tech backlash thing? Each week Joshua Fruhlinger contributes This is the Modem World, a column dedicated to exploring the culture of consumer technology. Just over a month ago, Apple launched its svelte new MacBook Pro with Retina display. Powerful and beautiful, we all fell in love with the new device, jammed up Apple's ordering process, and prepared to queue up for a hot new Mac all over again. Then we woke a day later to a slew of realizations: the unit is hard to upgrade, software isn't optimized for the new display, and repairs will be expensive, if not impossible. Then we heard that some Retina screens were having color issues. So we rioted. We hated it for being limited, for not being the sexy woman she promised she was the night before. It happens every time: Some great new thing is announced, we all gush with excitement and throw our wallets at our monitors. Then we wake up the next morning hung over and hating the very product we lusted after only 24 hours earlier. "I took THAT home last night?" Remember how excited we were over Facebook finally going public? Now we ridicule the social network and some pundits are even glad its stock is eroding. We find joy in ridiculing the giant social network for being a wasteland of baby pictures and farming games. "That'll teach Zuckerberg," we say. Teach him what? Or how about how we are all slowly dismembering Microsoft after imbibing their products like holy tech mana for years? It's now fashionable to mock their products. Even Ashton Kutcher got laughs when he bashed the Zune in his very first appearance on "Two and a Half Men" (probably his one funny line so far, unfortunately). And then there was the Nintendo Wii. Oh, the Wii. They told us we'd never play games the same way again. We thought they were crazy, but we were ready to give it a try, because we loved Nintendo. Then we all went nuts for Wii Sports and no one could find the console on store shelves for over a year. Almost as quickly as we drank the Wii Kool Aid, though, we shared videos of TVs being shattered by flying Wiimotes, doctors diagnosed us all with Wii-itis and we all begged Nintendo to drop the whole thing and just give us Zelda in HD with a Nintendo 64 controller. And when that comes, will we turn on it? Perhaps this is just the way we operate: We lump praise, go nuts and then correct ourselves when we realize we were being silly all along. This is human nature. We love, take things for granted, lose and regret. Then, we get all nostalgic. But when we act this way about consumer electronics, it sends product developers and marketers into tizzies. They're not sure what we like at the end of the day, and they end up putting things out that miss the mark, which, of course, we love, because we find more pleasure in mocking a product than showering it with praise. We're silly. Joshua Fruhlinger is the former Editorial Director for Engadget and current contributor to both Engadget and the Wall Street Journal. The company's today released a video showcasing its new London-based Creator Space, which is said to be opening its doors in the "next few weeks" in Google's own Soho office. While there's no word on the costs involved just yet, the space does certainly look to be well-equipped, boasting a range of DSLRs and professional video cameras, a green screen room, lighting rigs, editing suites, and audio booths -- not to mention lectures and workshops to help folks get the most out of all that gear. No further word on those other studios just yet, but you can get a glimpse of this one after the break.Continue reading Google shows off Creator Space in London, hopes to foster more professional YouTube videosFiled under: InternetGoogle shows off Creator Space in London, hopes to foster more professional YouTube videos originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 17:39:00 EDT. In a move that surely underscores the withering faith content companies have for the once beloved platform, the venerable Sulzberger-backed news organization has pulled all support for its DealBook Reader and NYTimes app for BlackBerry as of July 23rd. Users that attempt to access that application in the days since will find a stale content list that no longer updates and are being urged, instead, to visit the paper's mobile site for a "more complete... experience." And as if the ailing Waterloo-based company hadn't suffered enough indignity, it's been cast out of the developer pen alongside WebOS, joining PalmPre users on the reject list. Not to worry though, the Times crossword app has yet to get the axe -- that's got to be some consolation, no? You can check out the NYT's official line on its decision at the source below. Posted: 25 Jul 2012 01:58 PM PDT Strategy Analytics: iPad keeps riding high in Q2 tablet market share, Android doesn't budge ![]() Strategy Analytics: iPad keeps riding high in Q2 tablet market share, Android doesn't budge The Apple iPad may as well be called the Teflon Tablet for now, since challengers can't quite stick. Thanks to those 17 million iPads shipped in the second quarter, Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple held on to the 68 percent of tablet market share that IDC credited to the company in the previous season. That may not sound like a change in the status quo, but it's a significant jump from the 62 percent Apple had a year ago -- and not very good news for anyone else. Android is still holding on at 29.3 percent, although that's slightly underwhelming given the surge of extra devices in that time frame. The real hurt was dished out to Windows 7 tablets and "others" like RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook, both of whom were cut down to just 1.2 points of share each in the spring. We'll see if the newer crowd moves the needle for Android in the summer, although the well-received Nexus 7's current scarcity won't help its chances -- and both Microsoft as well as RIM are in holding patterns for the next several months.Filed under: Tablet PCsStrategy Analytics: iPad keeps riding high in Q2 tablet market share, Android doesn't budge originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 16:21:00 EDT. The average trip in Portland is between three and six miles, Daimler says, and and lasts between 30 to 45 minutes. So far, members of the Portlandia nation take around 4,500 trips a week. Now, it may or may not be in hopes of a better second half, but the Chinese outfit's just very quietly taken the wraps off of its newest tablet: the MediaPad 7 Lite. As the numerical figure in the moniker would tell, this particular Huawei tablet sports a 7-inch (1280 x 800) form factor, with other features like Mountain View's Ice Cream Sandwich and 3G connectivity (WiFi as well) also said to be included in the light package. Spotted in the FCC's database, the 10.1-inch Android slate bears all the makings of a WiFi-only affair, as it lists support for a/b/g/n protocols, in addition to Bluetooth. From what we've gleaned in the separate filings, the ICS tablet should also come loaded up with a 3,170mAh battery -- a generous cell size to complement its Tegra 3 CPU. Fortunate, then, at least for Mother Earth, that Microsoft's unveiled the results of its team-up with retail-focused search engine TheFind, several web-based Glimpse catalogs, offering the visual pizazz of a retail magazine without the carbon hangover. Injecting Redmond's HTML5 know-how into the shopping hub's catalog and social apps, it distills those functions into the single site. Stores including Brooks Brothers and Lands' End have already offered up their collections in the web store, but Techcrunch reckons the venture needs a little more work. The images appear to be little too compressed and blurred in the new format, while the detail view directs users to social network sharing rather than a product's description. But with Microsoft already offering the HTML5 juice that powers the online app for free, someone else might improve on the company's groundwork.Continue reading Microsoft teams up with shopping search engine for HTML5 digital catalogsFiled under: InternetMicrosoft teams up with shopping search engine for HTML5 digital catalogs originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 14:35:00 EDT. Electric Odyssey Citroen C-Zero happily cruising through Asia Posted: 25 Jul 2012 11:29 AM PDT Electric Odyssey Citroen C-Zero happily cruising through Asia ![]() Electric Odyssey Citroen C-Zero happily cruising through Asia Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Citroen, Asia, China It's the little EV that could. The car in question here is an all-electric Citroen C-Zero (a rebadged Mitsubishi i-MiEV) that two French engineers, Xavier Degon and Antonin Guy, are driving around the world, making it to China earlier this month. When we looked in on the Electric Odyssey in April, the drivers were in the Rockies. They started in Strasbourg, France last February and spent June in Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Even though the trip has been all-electric (well, not counting the fossil fuel required to get the car over the oceans), Citroen used the Odyssey's arrival in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, as "an opportunity to draw attention to its environmental strategy and the various solutions implemented by the Marque worldwide. For example: continuous improvements to combustion engines, the development of new hybrid-linked technologies, and all-electric vehicles." Using an EV adventure - one where the message is "If we can drive round the world in an electric car, you can use it for most of your day-to-day journeys" - to promote combustion engines? That's kind of ironic, no? The Electric Odyssey is scheduled to arrive in Kazakhstan on August 10th and is in an electric race around the world against Rafael de Mestre and his Tesla Roadster. You can learn more about the Electric Odyssey on the website and see a video of the car in Japan below.Continue reading Electric Odyssey Citroen C-Zero happily cruising through AsiaElectric Odyssey Citroen C-Zero happily cruising through Asia originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 14:02:00 EST. The company isn't hiding its disappointment at the donation, since it was originally angling for closer to $90 million. However, the conditions attached to the extra cash made further deployment "uneconomic," so the company will have to settle at this first target to begin with. There is some hope for countryside folk: CenturyLink mavens have filed a waiver application which, if granted, would let the company connect a further 60,000 homes where service is currently too expensive to install. Update: The FCC has made its own announcement, pledging that it'll connect up to 400,000 unconnected citizens in the next three years and up to seven million in six. Its 800 x 480 screen, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC won't rock most people's worlds, but the quad-band LTE still sticks out like a sore thumb despite other in-testing devices going the same route: the 700MHz, 850MHz, 1,700MHz and 1,900MHz bands may give the i547 more 4G support than AT&T-compatible 3G. We suspect the support is either an early sign of LTE futureproofing or for roaming on LTE networks as they go live around the world. Globetrotter or not, the i547 still has a lot left hidden under its kimono; we're expecting one or two more surprises before all is said and done.Filed under: CellphonesSamsung SGH-i547 runs through certification gauntlets with quad-band LTE, shroud of mystery originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 12:24:00 EDT. X-Cap automatically protects your lens even if you forget Posted: 25 Jul 2012 10:52 AM PDT X-Cap automatically protects your lens even if you forget ![]() X-Cap automatically protects your lens even if you forget Most point-and-shoots have an integrated lens cap that closes off, protecting the delicate glass underneath the moment you're done taking shots. DSLR's and other interchangable-lens cameras? Well, you've got to remember to put those covers back on yourself. The X-Cap, however, brings that automated protection to your fanciest of cams with a simple add-on that wont interfere with your picture taking (provided it's mounted right). It's pretty self explanatory really, you can see the Taiwanese designed and manufactured cap in action after the break and hit up Engadget Chinese for an interview with the designer.Continue reading X-Cap automatically protects your lens even if you forgetFiled under: Digital CamerasX-Cap automatically protects your lens even if you forget originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Jul 2012 11:58:00 EDT. LG’s Q2 2012 Earnings: $138M In Net Profits, Up 46% YOY, Phone Sales Still Lagging Posted: 25 Jul 2012 10:16 AM PDT LG's Q2 2012 Earnings: $138M In Net Profits, Up 46% YOY, Phone Sales Still Lagging ![]() LG's Q2 2012 Earnings: $138M In Net Profits, Up 46% YOY, Phone Sales Still Lagging LG has been turning a corner of late, getting its mobile division out of a six-quarter-long rut. Today's Q2 report outlines a 46 percent increase in net profits year-over-year at $138 million, though phone sales continue to be an obstacle. Overall revenues went up from last quarter, but are still down from a year ago. The handset division in particular had an operating loss of $49.5 million, which has a lot to do with the decline in feature phone sales. Smartphone sales, on the other hand, rose to 44 percent of all units sold, which is up from Q1's 36 percent. |
24.9M Tablets Sold In Q2, With Apple’s Share Of That Now Over 68%, Says Strategy... Posted: 25 Jul 2012 10:16 AM PDT 24.9M Tablets Sold In Q2, With Apple's Share Of That Now Over 68%, Says Strategy Analytics ![]() 24.9M Tablets Sold In Q2, With Apple's Share Of That Now Over 68%, Says Strategy Analytics One of the strong points in Apple's quarterly earnings report yesterday was sales of the iPad. Globally, they were up 52% by revenue and 84% by unit sales, respectively to $9 billion and 17 million. In some new figures out today, Strategy Analytics notes that this translates to an increase in overall tablet market share for the company: Apple now controls 68.3% of the market, compared to 62% in Q2 a year ago, in an overall tablet market that saw shipments of 24.9 million units. So much for analyst predictions: here's one (of several) that had forecast a decline in Apple's market share. So why the reversal? It looks like the competition that many had been expecting to give Apple a run for its money has failed to materialize. But while Apple's market share is the best it's been in years, Strategy Analytics also cautions that overall the market has also witnessed its slowest growth rate since the first iPad launched in Q2 2010, a result of a slowdown in the global economy, it says. |
