Honda will start making Jazz (Fit) hybrid in Malaysia
Filed under: Hybrid, Manufacturing/Plants, Honda, AsiaHonda broke ground on a production line at its Malaysian factory that will make hybrid versions of the Jazz (as the Fit is known in markets outside the U.S.) - as well as other vehicles - in an effort to more than double hybrid sales in the country. The second line, which will start production by the end of 2013, will make 50,000 vehicles a year. Honda is investing 350 million Malaysian ringgit ($110 million U.S. at current exchange rates) in the line. Last year, Honda, which currently imports its Jazz Hybrids to Malaysia from Japan, sold 4,600 hybrids in Malaysia. This year, the automaker plans to sell 10,000 hybrids there. Malaysia is Honda's largest Southeast Asia market for hybrids.Continue reading Honda will start making Jazz (Fit) hybrid in MalaysiaHonda will start making Jazz (Fit) hybrid in Malaysia originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 18:00:00 EST. Huawei 1H 2012: profits dropped 22 percent, still made $1.37 billion
Huawei's financial figures for the first six months of 2012 reveal that the Chinese behemoth brought in turnover of 102.7 billion yuan ($16.08 billion), making a profit of 8.79 billion yuan ($1.37 billion). That's not exactly bad news, but the figure is 22 percent smaller than the same period last year -- leading the company to blame the drop on the global economy and saying that the telecoms business is a "significant challenge." It humbly bragged that it had deployed 38 of the 80 commercial LTE networks worldwide and that the upstart now held over 12 percent of the Chinese smartphone market. It also claimed that the Ascend P1 and Ascend D1 had become bestselling handsets in China, Western Europe, Japan, Australia and Canada -- which might prompted CFO Ms. Meng Wanzhou to be "optimistic" about the company's performance in the second half of the year.Filed under: CellphonesHuawei 1H 2012: profits dropped 22 percent, still made $1.37 billion originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 17:47:00 EDT. CEO Cook On China In Q3: Apple Had $5.7B In Sales, Still Growing At 'Incredible' Rate
Apple today noted in its earnings call for Q3 that two-thirds of its Asia Pacific revenue is coming from Greater China at the moment. CEO Tim Cook noted that revenues in the country were $5.7 billion for the quarter, 48 percent increase on last year, and still growing at an "incredible rate." To date Apple's revenues in China for the year now total $12.4 billion. In 2011 the company made $13.3 billion in China. Nevertheless, Asia Pacific was actually the only region where Apple saw declines in hardware sales in Macs. These were down to 593 million units, four percent year on year in terms of Mac units. They also increased of 25 percent in terms of revenue to $7.887 billion. But that's down from growth last quarter of 100 percent.

Ford C-Max Energi pricing: $29,995 after a federal tax credit, available this fall
Ford already spilled the beans on its $25,995 C-Max Hybrid (shown in the vid just after the break), but those anxiously awaiting more surrounding the C-Max Energi can finally start saving a precise amount of pennies. The automaker's first production plug-in hybrid will go on sale this autumn for $29,995 after a federal tax credit, and according to Ford, that's "more affordable than the Prius plug-in hybrid." For those in need of a memory jar, the Energi is expected to deliver 550 miles of total range, representing a 95 mpg equivalent (MPGe) and an electric-only top speed higher than the Prius plug-in. As the Prius bashing continues, Ford is also quick to point out that its Energi will boast 60 more horsepower than Toyota's rival. Those intrigued can visit the source links to see the newly launched "build-and-price" website for the car, and those who reside in the state of California will likely qualify for an extra $1,500 in tax credits.Continue reading Ford C-Max Energi pricing: $29,995 after a federal tax credit, available this fallFiled under: TransportationFord C-Max Energi pricing: $29,995 after a federal tax credit, available this fall originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 17:24:00 EDT. Apple's Q3 hardware sales by the numbers: 17 million iPads, 26 million iPhones, 4 million Macs

Apple's Q3 hardware sales by the numbers: 17 million iPads, 26 million iPhones, 4 million Macs
Apple's out with its third quarter financials today and, as is customary, it's provided some sales figures for all of its big hardware categories. Those are headlined by record sales of the iPad, which jumped a whopping 84 percent year-over-year and 44 percent from the previous quarter to 17 million units sold during Q3 (no word on a breakdown by iPad model, though). iPhone sales were also up year-over-year to 26 million units, although that represents a more modest year-over-year growth of "just" 28 percent (and a drop from 30 million in Q2), no doubt due in part to folks holding off on a purchase until the next model comes out. A bit more surprising are the company's Mac sales numbers which, despite a new slate of MacBooks, saw year-over-year growth of only two percent for sales of an even four million in the quarter -- compared to growth of seven percent in Q2. That seems to be explained at least in part by a dip in desktop sales, which were down 13 percent year-over-year while laptops were up 8 percent, resulting in some fairly flat growth overall. Lastly, as has been the trend for some time now, the company's venerable iPod line is the one area that continues to see a consistent decline as phones and tablets take over, with it dropping ten percent year-over-year to sales of 6.8 million for the quarter. As Apple noted on its earnings call, though, those iPod numbers were actually better than it expected, and the iPod touch continues to be the most popular device in the category far, accounting for more than half of all iPod sales. Update: Apple didn't divulge any Apple TV sales figures in its earnings report, but Tim Cook was happy to provide them on the company's earnings call. The company sold 1.3 million Apple TV units during Q3, up an impressive 170 percent year-over-year. Still officially a "hobby," apparently, but not one that Tim Cook says he'd be pursuing if the company didn't believe in it.Continue reading Apple's Q3 hardware sales by the numbers: 17 million iPads, 26 million iPhones, 4 million MacsFiled under: Cellphones, Desktops, Laptops, Tablet PCsApple's Q3 hardware sales by the numbers: 17 million iPads, 26 million iPhones, 4 million Macs originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 16:53:00 EDT. Apple to release OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion tomorrow
Apple just confirmed in its Q3 2012 earnings report that Mountain Lion is coming tomorrow. The hotly anticipated 10.8 version of OS X brings with it a host of new features, as we've expounded upon in the past. The upgrade will be just $19.99 (unless you've recently bought a new Mac -- in which case it'll be free) and will be available via download on the Mac App Store in 24 hours or less. Apple managed to move a lot of iDevices over the last three months. The company just reported its third quarter financials and detailed iPhone, iPod, and iPad unit sales. The iPad saw a killer quarter with sales up from 11.8M units in Q2 to 17M in Q3. That said, the iPhone didn't fare as well. The company shipped 26M down from 35.1M last quarter but up 28% from last year's third quarter.

Apple's Q3 2012: $35B In Revenue, Net Profit Of $8.8B, Earnings Of $9.32 Per Share
Apple has just released its fiscal Q3 2012 earnings, and the Cupertino-based company reported revenues of $35 billion (compared to $28.6 billion in the year-ago quarter and $39.2 billion in Q2 2012) and quarterly net profit of $8.8 billion (compared to $7.3 billion in the year-ago quarter and $11.6B in Q2 2012). All that breaks down to earnings of $9.32 per diluted share. During the days leading up to the disappointing release, analysts expected to see Apple rake in revenues of about $37.4 billion, with earnings of roughly $10.38 per share. Apple also reported gross margins of 42.8% (compared to the impressive 47.4% figure the company revealed last quarter) and noted that a full 62% of the quarter's revenues were thanks to international sales. Apple also announced that the company would be issuing a cash dividend of $2.65 per share of common stock.

Apple announces Q3 2012 earnings: $35 billion revenue, $8.8 billion in net profits
It's hard to believe its been just three months since we were here last, but it's true. It's already earnings season again and, in the the feast of financial conference calls, Apple is an entree. Not surprisingly, Cupertino was raking in the big bucks yet again, but it wasn't quite the windfall of revenue the company has seen in the past. All told the company pulled in $35 billion in revenue, pocketing $8.8 billion of that as pure profit. But, just cause it wasn't quite as lucrative a quarter doesn't mean the boys in Cupertino aren't happy with the results. Profits were up $1.5 billion from Q3 of 2011, once again allowing the company to declare yet another cash dividend for its share holders. During the last three months the company shipped 17 million iPads, an 84 percent increase over the same quarter last year -- a simply staggering number. And don't think that its other premier gadget has plateaued. 26 million iPhones were also sold, representing a 28 percent increase year-over-year. Interestingly, Mac sales slowed, increasing just two percent over last year, largely thanks to a 13 percent drop off in desktop sales. The biggest money maker for the company continues to be the iPhone and its related products and services, however. More than $16 billion of the total revenue is directly attributable to the smaller member of the iOS family. The iPad is quickly closing the gap, netting Apple over $9 billion in this quarter alone. As a percentage of revenue, the iPod continued to decline, marking the slow death of the once flagship product line. While revenues were down sequentially, it's the year-over-year numbers that tell the real story and that explain why, for the second quarter in a row, Apple is able to award its investors a $2.65 per-share dividend. Revenue was up $9.5 billion from Q3 of 2011 and net income by $1.5 billion, as the company has continued to increase its market share and open up to niches to itself. For the next quarter Apple actually expects a small drop in both revenue and earnings per-share, but not enough that we expect Wall Street types to start yelling, "sell, sell, sell!" Developing...Continue reading Apple announces Q3 2012 earnings: $35 billion revenue, $8.8 billion in net profitsFiled under: Cellphones, Desktops, Laptops, Tablet PCsApple announces Q3 2012 earnings: $35 billion revenue, $8.8 billion in net profits originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 16:30:00 EDT. Box shares the app love with Windows Phone, hopes SkyDrive doesn't get special treatment
Up until now, Box.net (otherwise simply known as Box) had been quietly snubbing the Windows Phone platform altogether, but today's the day the cloud service finally ports its storage and sharing goods to Redmond's mobile OS. As far as the app goes, Box is keeping things relatively simple -- much like on iOS and Android -- but adding a few tweaks to fit nicely alongside that Metro UI, including tidbits like pinning tiles to the Start screen for viewing updates on files. Of course, you'll also be able to manage your content straight from the application, as well as locking any docs with a passcode in case "paranoia" is your middle name. Notably, Box knows it'll have to compete directly with Microsoft's own SkyDrive, to which Chris Yeh, VP of Platforms, says his company "will be watching carefully to see if SkyDrive gets the better integration" of the two. Regardless, folks can download the Box app now from the WP Marketplace, and best of all, it won't cost you a single dime.Filed under: Cellphones, Storage, SoftwareBox shares the app love with Windows Phone, hopes SkyDrive doesn't get special treatment originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 16:22:00 EDT. Netflix Q2 2012 earnings: 530,000 more US subscribers and a return to profitability
Netflix recently let it drop that its users clocked in more than one billion hours of content-viewing in the month of June alone, although the big question for CEO Reed Hastings is how that relates to the company's subscriber base. The results are in from its Q2 2012 earnings report, and it's claiming 27.56 million subscribers worldwide, up from 26 million last quarter. In the US alone that includes 23.94 million customers, after it reported 23.4 million in Q1. Also notable is a plan to launch service in an "additional attractive European market" in Q4, but we'll find out more about those plans later in Q3. One other issue that has been resolved is the search for a new Chief Marketing Officer resulting in the hiring of Kelly Bennett, formerly a marketing executive with Warner Bros. This morning Verizon and Redbox began to carefully pull back the cover on their competing offering, and Amazon has also been making significant waves in the space. However in response, Netflix says Amazon and Hulu Plus have yet to "gain meaningful traction" in relation to its viewing hours, and it expects Redbox Instant to face a "big challenge" to break into the existing top 3. Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro quad core dev tablet now available for $1,299 (update: spec sheet)
For those keen beans out there who want to get an early taste of Qualcomm's first quad-core chipset, news just came in that starting today BSQUARE, the usual distributor of Qualcomm dev kits, is offering the Snapdragon S4 Pro mobile development platform for a hefty $1,299 (and just for reference, the MSM8960 "Fluid" smartphone MDP is currently sold for $999). Similar to the dual-core "Liquid" slate we tinkered with last year, this new APQ8064-based MDP sports the same 10.1 WXGA display as well as 2GB LPDDR2 RAM, 32GB of storage space and Android Ice Cream Sandwich. But obviously, developers will be able to take advantage of the two extra asynchronous CPU cores plus the new Adreno 320 graphics engine, which is said to pack three to four times the processing capacity of the Adreno 225 in the current top S4 lineup. If you're in no hurry then stay tuned for our hands-on later today. Update: We've got a spec sheet after the break, and wow, there are seven mics on this slate!Continue reading Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro quad core dev tablet now available for $1,299 (update: spec sheet)Filed under: Tablet PCsQualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro quad core dev tablet now available for $1,299 (update: spec sheet) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 15:58:00 EDT. Can we establish a KIRF award for Most Likely to Invite Multiple Lawsuits? If so, Long Xun Software would have to claim the statuette for its Droid X360, at least if it dared set foot in the US. This prime example of keepin' it real fake is even more of a PS Vita clone than the Yinlips YDPG18, but goes the extra mile with a name that's likely to irk Microsoft, Motorola, Verizon and George Lucas all at once. That's even discounting the preloaded emulators for just about every pre-1999 Nintendo, Sega and Sony console. Inside, you'll at least find a device that's reasonably up to snuff: the 5-inch handheld is running Android 4.0 on a 1.5GHz single-core Quanzhi A10 processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of built-in space, a 2-megapixel camera at the back and a VGA shooter at the front. If the almost gleeful amount of copyright and trademark violation isn't keeping you from wanting this award-winner, you'll have to ask Long Xun for pricing and availability.Continue reading Droid X360 goes for the KIRF prize, antagonizes Microsoft, Motorola and Sony at the same time (video)Filed under: Gaming, HandheldsDroid X360 goes for the KIRF prize, antagonizes Microsoft, Motorola and Sony at the same time (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 15:44:00 EDT. Google fetes 40 years of Landsat with new timelapse videos of Earth
Compared to Landsat, which has been beaming photos of our planet since 1972, Mountain View is a cartographic newb. But Google Earth drove geospatial interest into the stratosphere when it launched in 2005 and, with a billion downloads and counting, the company is well placed to celebrate 40 years of Landsat imagery. To do that, it has collaborated with the US Geological Survey and Carnegie Mellon to create a collection of timelapse videos ranging from seasonal snowcover changes across North America to Amazon deforestation. Though the search giant is gradually shifting from relatively low-res 100 feet per pixel Landsat imagery to 8 feet SPOTImage maps, its Google Earth Engine was used to process the vast archive and make it available to the public. AMD exec behind Wii and Xbox 360 graphics jumps the fence to NVIDIA
AMD has been suffering a conspicuous brain drain, with executives like ATI veteran Rick Bergman and CTO Eric Demers crossing over to tangentially or directly competitive companies like NVIDIA and Qualcomm. Chalk up another one for the list -- strategic development VP Bob Feldstein has bounded towards NVIDIA's (literally) greener pastures. The blow cuts deeper than usual through Feldstein's responsibility for graphics in most of the consoles from the past few years: he headed up work behind the Xenos chip in earlier Xbox 360s and the Hollywood core in the Wii, and he likely had some say in the Wii U's video hardware as well. While the staff shuffle won't directly affect AMD's Fusion processors or Radeon cards, it's hard to see much of a positive for AMD's future in video gaming, even in the light of rumors that the next PlayStation and Xbox might use some of Feldstein's work.Filed under: Gaming, PeripheralsAMD exec behind Wii and Xbox 360 graphics jumps the fence to NVIDIA originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 15:14:00 EDT. Pixar Image Computer surfaces on eBay, $25k will let you buy it now
Still have another cube-sized hole in your vintage computer collection? Then you may be interested in this rare specimen that's currently up for auction on eBay. Long before Pixar produced its first feature film, it sold the Pixar Image Computer, a high-end system developed at Lucasfilm and intended for a variety of professional uses (from medical to meteorological applications). As the eBay seller notes, the computer also has a distinctive "tombstone" design, with the Pixar logo emblazoned on the front (not to mention a matching CRT). Unfortunately, the seller isn't able to verify if the computer is actually in working condition as it's missing a power cord, but that little detail hasn't gotten in the way of a $15,000 starting bid and a $25,000 buy it now price. Pricey, to be sure, but a steep discount from its original $135,000 selling price.Filed under: DesktopsPixar Image Computer surfaces on eBay, $25k will let you buy it now originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 14:44:00 EDT. That's why you also see Leviton with Honda and, now, that BMW is making moves on Coulomb Technologies. Today, BMW i Ventures announced it will make a "strategic investment" in Coulomb Technologies. The investment (amount not disclosed) will support "the development of infrastructure for plug-in electric vehicles." That's vague enough, isn't it? More details will undoubtedly be forthcoming, but for now, the door has closed behind the two parties, and we're left outside imagining what's going on inside. In other Coulomb Technologies news, the company announced at Plug-In 2012 that the fourth version of the ChargePoint network interface would be coming in September. The new version will offer "intuitive dashboards, enhanced administrative and billing features" as well as ChargePoint Connections, which will let station owners send plug-in vehicle drivers "special offers, messages and discounts via email, text message or mobile alerts." Details available in the press release below.Continue reading BMW i ventures invests in Coulomb; ChargePoint 4.0 coming soonBMW i ventures invests in Coulomb; ChargePoint 4.0 coming soon originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 14:11:00 EST. ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity hits the UK on August 31st, starts at £600 for 32GB model
While we've known the pricing and availability attached to ASUS' new flagship slate in the US for some time now, UKers had been left to wonder when they'd finally be able to get their eager palms on that rebranded and well-specced Pad Infinity. Thankfully, that's about to change, as the Taiwanese outfit just announced the Transformer TF700 will be up for grabs from Amazon in the UK starting August 31st, with the sticker value set at £600 for the rather spacious 32GB configuration. Naturally, that's only a small part of the entire package, given how you'd also be getting a beautiful 1920 x 1200 display and the famed Tegra 3 chip to get you through the days. The only tedious bit is you'll still have to wait a while to place your order; in the meantime, however, you could always give our review yet another read.Continue reading ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity hits the UK on August 31st, starts at £600 for 32GB modelFiled under: Tablet PCsASUS Transformer Pad Infinity hits the UK on August 31st, starts at £600 for 32GB model originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 14:27:00 EDT. Apple secures multitouch-related patent dating back to 1995 from inventor

Apple secures multitouch-related patent dating back to 1995 from inventor
Apple has come into possession of a number of patents owned by Canadian inventor Timothy R. Pryor in recent years (see the More Coverage link below for a few examples), and it's just today been granted another that's particularly interesting. Described rather broadly as a "method for providing human input to a computer," the patent is a continuation of one dating all the way back to 1995, and appears to cover some fairly basic multitouch-related functions. As detailed in the patent's claims, that includes controlling a virtual object on a screen with two simultaneous touch inputs, as well as virtual controllers displayed on the screen that can also respond to touch input. The patent also describes responses to touch input, including both visual and force feedback cues, and it offers a whole range of possible applications beyond the independent claims, including an aircraft cockpit or vehicle display. Those independent claims are clearly focused on general computer interfaces, though, not specific implementations. Naturally, all of this has simply been revealed by the USPTO -- we wouldn't expect to hear anything from Apple or Mr. Pryor on the terms of the deal.Filed under: Displays, Misc. Viber's VoIP iPhone, Android apps updated with enhanced UI, group messaging and more
It's safe to say Viber's VoIP applications have been somewhat of a hit since the early days on Android and iPhone. Now, looking to build up on that humble success, Viber's updating these apps to version 2.2, bringing with it a fresh group messaging feature, improvements to the voice engine for better call quality and tweaks to the UI, such as adding photos to contacts list. Meanwhile, the Windows Phone and BlackBerry flavors will still have to wait for the voice goods, as Viber didn't announce any changes on those platforms. Viber v2.2 is up for download now from the App Store and Google Play links below.Filed under: Cellphones, SoftwareViber's VoIP iPhone, Android apps updated with enhanced UI, group messaging and more originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 13:56:00 EDT. Qualcomm pairs up with Delta Motorsport, flirts with Renault for Halo wireless charging trials

Qualcomm pairs up with Delta Motorsport, flirts with Renault for Halo wireless charging trials
Qualcomm will be trialling its wireless charging system in London later this year, adding two names to turn Qualcomm Halo from a Australian science project into reality. It's teaming up with Delta Motorsport, which will add the induction platform to some of its E-4 electric sports coupés in preparation for the city-wide trial. It's also signed a memorandum of understanding with Renault, paving the way for the French auto maker to investigate adding the tech to future EVs. As part of the deal, both companies will get a seat on the steering committee for the project -- maybe the company will let them sit in the passenger seat and change gears.Continue reading Qualcomm pairs up with Delta Motorsport, flirts with Renault for Halo wireless charging trialsFiled under: Transportation, WirelessQualcomm pairs up with Delta Motorsport, flirts with Renault for Halo wireless charging trials originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Jul 2012 13:40:00 EDT.
