Republican candidate Joe Coors loves his Chevy Volt, films campaign ad inside
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Chevrolet Usually, when the words Republican and Chevrolet Volt go together, it has something to do with hating on General Motor's most controversial car. Like this or this or this. But take a look at Colorado Republican congressional candidate Joe Coors' campaign commercial, which was actually filmed inside his Chevrolet Volt and is full of praise for the car. "I bet you don't know many Republicans who drive hybrid cars," he says in the ad. The Volt's a plug-in hybrid, but we get the idea. Coors also says he's always been a "car nut," and 30 years ago tried to build an electric car in his garage. He's into alternative energy, domestic oil and natural gas production and lowering energy costs while reducing dependence on foreign oil. Click below to watch the video.Denver Post columnist Lynn Bartels says she's been asked several times since the ad came out what Coors actually drives. Yes, he drives a 2012 Volt, she says, even though he could be driving a luxury car worth much more, what with his $2 million a year from family trusts and all. Coors is going after the seventh district Congressional seat held by Democratic Congressman Ed Perlmutter. Local residents think Coors bought the car to look good on energy issues, but he does seem to love the car. According to Bartels, the Democratic tracker who has been following Coors around has plenty of video of Coors getting in and out of the Volt. So, if he's putting on a show, then he's doing it the method acting way.Continue reading Republican candidate Joe Coors loves his Chevy Volt, films campaign ad insideRepublican candidate Joe Coors loves his Chevy Volt, films campaign ad inside originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 18:05:00 EST. Txtr Beagle aims to corner low-end e-reader market for $13 (video)
We've seen some cheap e-readers in our day. Heck, even the big boys are practically giving the things away. But, we've never seen anything quite like the Txtr Beagle. The latest creation from German company Txtr is expected to sell for under €10 or about $13 when it hits the market, hopefully sometime before the holiday season. Obviously, for such a low price, you're not getting a lot of bells and whistles here. There's no touchscreen, no backlight, no 3G -- not even WiFi is baked into the impossibly thin 5mm body. The screen is only five inches but, if the promotional video (after the break) is to be believed, it offers a more enjoyable experience than reading an iPad or talking to your significant other. What is inside this barebones device is 4GB of storage and a Bluetooth radio which, when paired with your phone, can transfer ebooks from your mobile to the Beagle using the free Txtr app (available for Android 4.0 with an iOS version is in the works). Instead of an expensive rechargable cell, power is provided by a trio of AAA batteries, which the company claims will last you up to a year of regular reading. Almost as interesting as the device itself, is the model being used to keep the costs down. Txtr is positioning it not as a standalone e-reader, but as a smartphone accessory it hopes that carriers will offer with a small subsidy. The company's chief commercial officer Thomas Leliveld has said that work is underway to get AT&T and Sprint on board, but that talks are still ongoing with providers. Complete PR awaits you after the break.Continue reading Txtr Beagle aims to corner low-end e-reader market for $13 (video)Txtr Beagle aims to corner low-end e-reader market for $13 (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 17:54:00 EDT. Western Digital bumps My Book Thunderbolt Duo to 8TB, consoles regular My Book buyers with 4TB
Many of us may have liked the prospect of Western Digital's My Book Thunderbolt Duo, but there's no doubt some of us who discovered that even 6TB just wouldn't cut it. If that digital pack rat mentality describes you, the solution is here: the company has taken advantage of larger 4TB hard disks to stuff a total 8TB of storage into the Duo's enclosure. The extra capacity hikes the price to $850, although the company notes that it's including the often expensive Thunderbolt cable to avoid any surprise trips to the store. Those without the ports or budget for the Duo can still reap some of the benefits through an updated, 4TB version of the regular My Book that hums along on USB 3.0 at a more reasonable $250 price. Either of the new drives should be lurking in stores if you're hurting for space as we write this.Filed under: StorageWestern Digital bumps My Book Thunderbolt Duo to 8TB, consoles regular My Book buyers with 4TB originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 17:33:00 EDT. Valve is ready for you to test its hardware prototypes, has a handy survey
In what is assuredly the inauspicious beginnings of an alternate reality Aperture Science, Valve Software is asking interested parties to take a brief survey which may result in being the first people outside of the company to get hands-on time with Valve's hardware prototypes. Additionally, participants will get a chance to playtest "both released and unreleased versions of our games." Putting the two together, it sounds an awful lot like you'll be trying existing Valve games with new means of input. For now, Valve's only seeking folks in the Seattle/Bellevue, Washington region of the US, but that may expand remotely "in the future." Perhaps in an upcoming hardware beta? We can't be sure! It's unclear when the survey sign-up period will end, but we've asked Valve for more info. Let's just say we'd suggest not putting it off. California takes wraps off dirtier, "winter" gasoline to ease prices
Filed under: Legislation and Policy, USA For Californians, the start of "winter" can't come soon enough. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has responded to a request from Governor Jerry Brown to allow slightly dirtier gasoline to be sold about three weeks before the state usually switches to the so-called "winter blend" of gas. Brown made the request to bring the gas cost down from record highs. The most populous US state, which uses gas that's better for the environment in the summer because it evaporates more slowly, usually switches to faster evaporating fuel - the winder blend - on October 31. The cleaner gas is required in the summer because of harsher ozone conditions. Brown made the request after prices topped $4.65 a gallon, on average, this past weekend, about 84 cents per gallon more than the national rate. In some places, a gallon was much, much higher: $5.89 around Big Sur. CARB's Dave Cleggern told Capitol Public radio that the early switch shouldn't pose a problem this year. "I don't think there is going to be too dramatic an impact on air quality because the temperatures have begun to cool in the nick of time you might say and the cooler temperatures that we're seeing now should help blunt any air quality impact," he said. California is the only state that uses the exact formulation of gasoline that it does, and the fuel requires special refining. Due in part to a power outage at ExxonMobil's plant in Torrance, CA and some pipeline issues, gas prices spiked recently. The governor's hope is that once the winter blend is added to the state's fuel supply, prices will fall. Some estimates suggest it could drop by as much as 20 cents per gallon within a few days of the switch.Continue reading California takes wraps off dirtier, "winter" gasoline to ease pricesCalifornia takes wraps off dirtier, "winter" gasoline to ease prices originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 16:27:00 EST. Google goes back to basics, announces GSA 7.0 for all of your enterprise searching needs
Long before retail outlets were flooded with Android-powered electronics, Google embarked on its maiden voyage into the world of hardware. Venturing out into uncharted waters, the then only web search company released a glaring yellow box known as the Google Search Appliance. Sticking to its search engine roots, Google's first piece of enterprise hardware was designed to help its customers perform fast and effective searches of internal networks. While the GSA may not be the search juggernaut's most noteworthy piece of equipment, it doesn't mean that the company has abandoned its original vision for the platform.Continue reading Google goes back to basics, announces GSA 7.0 for all of your enterprise searching needsFiled under: Networking, Software, GoogleGoogle goes back to basics, announces GSA 7.0 for all of your enterprise searching needs originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 16:51:00 EDT. Disney Research develops capacitive touch that detects multiple users through their fingertips (video)
Creating a truly multi-user, multi-touch display is a tricky prospect. How do you know who's who short of turning the screen into one giant fingerprint reader? Chris Harrison, Ivan Poupyrev and Munehiko Sato at Disney Research have suggested in a paper that fingerprinting on a capacitive touchscreen isn't far off -- it's just what we need to fingerprint that matters. Rather than look for physical ridges, the scientists' method sweeps through AC frequencies to find the exact electrical impedances of fingertips in contact with the screen. Different bodies, different clothes and even different shoes give everyone a unique signature that lets the screen identify specific people, even when they each have multiple fingers in play. The researchers propose that the technique would work well in collaborative workspaces, personalized devices and security, but let's not forget that this is Disney we're talking about: it's placing a strong emphasis on the prospects for shared screen gaming without the limitations we know today. While any practical use is still some distance away, it's easy to see future tablets and tables that are designed from the start to encourage a little socializing.Continue reading Disney Research develops capacitive touch that detects multiple users through their fingertips (video)Filed under: Gaming, Tablets, Science, AltDisney Research develops capacitive touch that detects multiple users through their fingertips (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 16:29:00 EDT. Bookeen Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight joins the lit e-reader fray
Offering a front-lit e-reader isn't reserved just for the heaviest hitters. Bookeen is leaping into that still-exclusive club with the Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight. Its lengthily-named upgrade to the original Odyssey focuses on the read-anywhere light, and a lightweight body, as its standout aspects -- at just under 6.4 ounces, it's more featherlike than Amazon and Barnes & Noble counterparts with similarly legible screens. Claims of display superiority are a bit suspicious when Bookeen touts the same 62 percent jump in resolution that we saw in the Kindle Paperwhite, but we'll appreciate the extra crispness alongside a tweaked interface and a new PDF reflow option. Readers who balk at going with the dominant device makers can pick up the Cybook HD FrontLight in November, when we'll also learn whether or not Bookeen can offer a challenge on price.Continue reading Bookeen Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight joins the lit e-reader frayBookeen Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight joins the lit e-reader fray originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 16:08:00 EDT. Ferrari teases new 'powerful road car ever,' and it's a hybrid
Filed under: Hybrid, Ferrari, Detroit Auto Show We doubt the developers of the Toyota Prius had this in mind, but we'll take it. The Ferrari with the most power ever, which will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show next January, will indeed be a hybrid, Automotive News reports, citing people it declined to identify. The new model, which will replace the limited-edition Enzo, will pair a V12 with an electric motor that combined will deliver an ungodly 900 horsepower. Ferrari has already said it's working on a carbon fiber chassis that will cut weight by 20 percent relative to the one used for the Enzo, which means the hybrid components will simply bring the new hybrid to the same weight as the Enzo. The automaker said at the Paris Motor Show last month that it would launch its first hybrid "in the near future," though didn't divulge details such as the timeframe or model name. Some reports have said the car will be called the F70. We'll just call it a beast, for now. Ferrari in April hinted that a hybrid was forthcoming, saying that one of its models would have a "green factor" in order to help cut the company's fleetwide greenhouse gas emissions.Ferrari teases new 'powerful road car ever,' and it's a hybrid originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 14:53:00 EST. Polaris rover will travel to the Moon in search of polar resources, try to survive the long lunar night
The Polaris rover may look a little punk rock, but that mohawk is no fashion statement. It's for catching solar rays which shine almost horizontally at the Moon's north pole, a location Polaris is due to explore before 2016. Built by Astrobotic Technology, it'll be ferried aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to our celestial companion, where it'll drill into the surface in search of ice. The company, spun out of the Carnegie Mellon University, hopes to identify resources at a depth of up to four feet that could be used to support manned Moon expeditions in the future. The plan is to complete the mission during a 10-day window of sunlight, digging at up to 100 sites over a three-mile stretch. However, if it can live through the harsh two-week-long nights, then it may continue to operate "indefinitely." NASA is backing the project, providing ice-prospecting gear and money, although Astrobotic hopes to get more cash for its work -- over $20 million from Google's Lunar X Prize. Right now, Polaris is a flight prototype and there are still improvements to be made, mainly on the software side, before it tackles the rough terrain. Check out the short video of its public unveiling below, although we don't think the soundtrack quite matches the hairdo.Continue reading Polaris rover will travel to the Moon in search of polar resources, try to survive the long lunar nightFiled under: Robots, Science, AltPolaris rover will travel to the Moon in search of polar resources, try to survive the long lunar night originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 15:45:00 EDT. LG Optimus G for Sprint hands-on

LG Optimus G for Sprint hands-on
Stop us if you've heard this one before, but we had the opportunity to get our hands on the LG Optimus G... again. This would make the excursion lucky number four for Engadget, but this one is a touch on the unique side since it's heading directly to Sprint at some point in the not-too-distant future. Here's what we knew up until today: like the Korean versions, this particular flavor of the G -- also known as the LS970 -- will feature a 13MP rear camera (AT&T's will only sport an 8MP module), and otherwise carries the same set of features such as a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB RAM, 2,100mAh battery and 4.7-inch 1280x768 True HD IPS PLUS display. Much like it did on the Motorola Photon Q, Sprint has elected to keep its carrier-specific branding off of the device (it's doing this so the handset can make its way to the network's prepaid brands with relative ease), but we were disappointed to see that the SIM card is once again embedded and not accessible without taking the entire phone apart. Check out our images below and we'll continue to update this post with more of our impressions, as well as some video footage of the device in action. Huawei and ZTE cry foul at US Congress' accusations, say the report was rigged
Chinese telecoms giants Huawei and ZTE have responded to Congress' claims that neither company could be trusted to sell hardware to the US. Both feel that they've been victimized, with ZTE pointing out that since no Chinese company is "free from state influence," the report should have included every tech business based there. Huawei, on the other hand, took a more resigned (albeit snarky) tone, saying that the committee was "committed to a predetermined outcome," and that the business is no different from any Silicon Valley start-up. With the ball firmly in Congress' court, it remains to be seen what action the government will take, but we suspect this one's got the capacity to run and run.Continue reading Huawei and ZTE cry foul at US Congress' accusations, say the report was riggedFiled under: Cellphones, Wireless, Networking, Internet, MobileHuawei and ZTE cry foul at US Congress' accusations, say the report was rigged originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 14:46:00 EDT. Now that the Galaxy Note II has already been made public for AT&T and Sprint, it's T-Mobile's turn at bat. The magenta network isn't deviating significantly from the hardware seen at other American carriers, aside from the absence of (currently active) LTE, but it does brag about bonus software. Gamers taken with the MOGA Bluetooth gamepad will get a preloaded, special version of an "exciting new racing game" that's tailored for the physical controller. Unfortunately, T-Mobile is shy about committing to prices and ship dates for the gray and white Note II editions it will be offering in the weeks ahead -- although there's more than one hint that we should keep an eye out around October 24th, or at least no later than mid-November.Continue reading Samsung Galaxy Note II for T-Mobile made official, comes with gamepad-tuned racing this fallFiled under: Cellphones, Mobile, Samsung, T-MobileSamsung Galaxy Note II for T-Mobile made official, comes with gamepad-tuned racing this fall originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 14:20:00 EDT. Fisker raises another $100 million in private funding for Karma production, marketing
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Fisker The optimist would say "a hundred million down." The pessimist would add, "...and about 235 million to go." Either way, Fisker Automotive took a pretty good bite out of the federal government's planned line of credit that the California-based automaker can't access because of production delays related to the extended-range plug-in Karma. Fisker said recently that it raised more than $100 million of new equity funding, which will be used to expand production and marketing-related efforts for the Karma, which went on sale last December. The company in total has raised more than $1.2 billion in private equity, about half of that within the past year and a half. One reason for the fundraising was because Fisker, which was granted a $529 million line of credit from the U.S. Energy Department in 2010, drew down just $193 million before the remaining $336 million was frozen because of Karma production delays. Fisker's press release on the new funding is available below. Meanwhile, on the good news/bad news front, Consumer Reports last week shredded the $107,000 Karma in a review, saying that, among other things, its pickup, handling, interior, visibility and dash controls all failed to meet expectations.Continue reading Fisker raises another $100 million in private funding for Karma production, marketingFisker raises another $100 million in private funding for Karma production, marketing originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 13:16:00 EST. Android 4.1.2 goes live, gives Nexus 7 owners landscape home screen
We've been seeing a mysterious Android 4.1.2 update mentioned in conjunction with a few unreleased devices in the past few hours, so it's only fitting that we're seeing the official release today. Google's Android Open Source Project lead Jean-Baptiste Queru has posted word that the 4.1.2 release should be available on Tuesday for at least those relying on pure AOSP builds of the mobile OS. While we haven't seen the update reach our own devices yet, some Nexus 7 owners already report getting 4.1.2 on their tablets with a pleasant surprise in store: in addition to the expected bug fixes and performance boosts, the software lets the home screen rotate to landscape mode on the smaller Jelly Bean slate. We're keeping an eye out for when other hardware gets the patch, although it's expected that the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and Xoom will follow quickly enough. Humble Bundle goes literary, offers octuplet of books at a humble price

Humble Bundle goes literary, offers octuplet of books at a humble price
The Humble Bundle tends to be associated with not just low prices, but also indie video games (and occasionally music). Today's bundle, however, centers on the literary-minded among us, offering a set of eight e-Books for just under $10. Of course, a main staple of the bundle is its pay what you want price model, which applies here as well -- should you only want six of the books, you can pay any price (one penny for six books! hot dog!). If you want access to John Scalzi's Old Man's War and Signal to Noise by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, you've gotta shell out over the average payment price (currently sitting at $9.84). If you want that sub-$10 price, we'd suggest heading over sooner than later. Another good reason? You've only got two weeks before this humble e-Book bundle disappears forever.Continue reading Humble Bundle goes literary, offers octuplet of books at a humble priceFiled under: Tablets, Software, AltHumble Bundle goes literary, offers octuplet of books at a humble price originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 13:37:00 EDT. Galaxy Note II coming to T-Mobile on October 24th, say leaked documents
Samsung's Galaxy Note II is happily filling hands in Korea and the UK without so much as a release date announced stateside. We may now have one, thanks to the folks at TmoNews, who appear to have snagged an internal document which suggests the phablet will arrive at the Magenta carrier on October 24th. Coincidentally (or not), Samsung is holding an event the same day, marrying with our previous speculation that it'll be unveiling the various carrier editions of the 5.5-inch beast there. Our suspicions are flagged, however, at the mention that Need for Speed: Most Wanted will come pre-installed, a game that isn't slated for release until October 30th -- not that we haven't seen similar release partnerships from the Note crew before. Although we can't confirm the legitimacy of this leak, we can suggest you start building up that grip strength just in case. Firefox 16 final launches with Reader on Android, VoiceOver on Macs and web app support
Mozilla knows how to keep on the fast track. Just weeks after the Firefox 16 beta first showed, the finished version is ready and waiting. Surprises are few if you were an early adopter, although the update still has some welcome changes for the right audiences. Mozilla is most keen to talk about preliminary web app support for the Mozilla Marketplace, but you'll also find device-specific additions like a Reader Mode for the Android flock and VoiceOver support automatically switched on for Macs. More responsive JavaScript and on-by-default Opus audio playback give existing surfers extra reasons to upgrade. Firefox 16 is immediately available through all the usual channels, so hit the relevant source link if you're ready to live on the not-quite-bleeding edge.Filed under: Internet, SoftwareFirefox 16 final launches with Reader on Android, VoiceOver on Macs and web app support originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 12:56:00 EDT. It's a Sunday afternoon, and David Venable is in his element: on the air, in one of the kitchens at the QVC home shopping network, chatting a mile a minute about bakeware on his popular show, "In the Kitchen with David."

Cheapest Nissan Leaf lease around: $139/month in California
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan Boardwalk Nissan in Redwood City, CA, about 30 miles south of San Francisco, is offering lease terms on a Nissan Leaf that are as cheap as we've ever seen: $139 a month. Or, as it's known in an era of $5 gas, what it costs to fill a 14-gallon tank twice. The monthly cost is also about $80 a month less than what had been the lowest going rate, the 24-month lease is based on an MSRP of $38,270 and a downpayment of $2,995, leaving a purchase option for $21,813 at the end of the term. We recently saw monthly lease rates of $219 a month after Nissan initially charged $349 a month. The $219 a month lease is for a 32-month term with $2,999 down. Dealers are looking to move a model whose sales have lagged in 2012 when compared to 2011. Through the first nine months of the year, Leaf sales fell 28 percent from a year earlier to 5,212 units, though September sales were down just 4.6 percent.Cheapest Nissan Leaf lease around: $139/month in California originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 12:01:00 EST. Here's The Upcoming Nexus Superphone Made By LG
The next Nexus phone is not official yet, but a ton of pics of the phone have leaked this morning and provide a clear look at the upcoming superphone. But let's hope it has a different name than rumors suggest. The upcoming Nexus is made by LG and reportedly carries the model number of E960. It runs Amdroid 4.1.2 and ships unlocked, allowing the GSM phone to run on both AT&T and T-Mobile in the US. It apparently sports a Qualcomm 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with Adreno 320 GPU, meaning it's probably a bit of a powerhouse.

Sprint adds two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle to its LTE line-up
If simple vanity trinkets don't excite you, Sprint has something else to tempt you in -- four new LTE devices. The new line-up includes two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle, so hopefully something for everyone. The phones? the Optimus G (as we suspected) and Mach (a cheaper, QWERTY phone), both by LG. If you need a little more screen real-estate, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will be joining the other Koreans on the good ship Sprint too. Happy with your notebook, and just want the service? Sprint's adding a Plug-in-Connect USB dongle to the menu also. Now deets on cost and dates we're afraid, with "fall" being all the info we've got right now. Feel free to delve into the PR after the break, in the meantime though.Continue reading Sprint adds two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle to its LTE line-upFiled under: Cellphones, Mobile, Samsung, LGSprint adds two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle to its LTE line-up originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 09 Oct 2012 12:30:00 EDT.
