After Early Boom, New Numbers Suggest iOS 6 Adoption May Be Reaching A Plateau
Apple's iOS 6 adoption got off to a quick start, but now, two weeks on, it looks like it may be evening out. New data from Chartboost today, covering the time between iOS 6's launch and Wednesday, suggests that user uptake of Apple's latest mobile OS might be levelling off after an initial rush. Adoption looks to be plateauing shy of 50 percent in the last week.

Running out of gas, stations in CA now inching toward $5/gallon prices

Running out of gas, stations in CA now inching toward $5/gallon prices
Filed under: Etc., USA The basics of supply and demand, even in a market as curated as global petroleum is, are fairly easy to understand. Today's example: southern California, where some stations are beginning to run out of gas due to "refinery supply problems" at both Chevron and Mobil, reports USA Today. The result? Prices could hit $5-a-gallon soon. AAA says that the average in California today is $4.486 a gallon, well above the national average of $3.789 and making a run on the $4.61 record from June 2008. Since some gas stations are no longer buying wholesale fuel, the tanks are running dry. USA Today notes that a Costco in Simi Valley started selling premium (which was available) at regular prices (since that fuel was not available). Another station owner told Bloomberg, "I can get gas, but it's going to cost me $4.90 a gallon, and I can't sell it here for $5. ... My market is open, but no gas." He can't sell it for $5 today, but with California prices jumping 20 cents overnight and 40 cents for the week, that could change soon. In fact, a station in Calabasas was selling gas for $5.69 yesterday, along with signs that said: "We are sorry, it is not our fault."Running out of gas, stations in CA now inching toward $5/gallon prices originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 15:44:00 EST. Leap of faith: Felix Baumgartner's historic jump from the edge of space

Leap of faith: Felix Baumgartner's historic jump from the edge of space
BASE jumping might just be about to enter the mainstream. What has typically been considered a fringe activity, reserved for thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies, could soon be firmly cemented in the public view. For the uninitiated, BASE jumping is like skydiving, without the plane. Participants throw themselves off bridges, antennae, buildings, cliffs, and well, whatever high object they can find. It's not illegal, "in theory", but as many of the chosen launch spots are public or private property -- or pose a risk to public safety -- gaining access to, or jumping from them, can mean stepping over the legal line. This otherwise obstreperous activity has largely kept to itself, occasionally popping up in magazines, or YouTube videos, but -- all going well -- on Monday that changes. Serial boundary pusher (of wing suit across the English Channel fame) Felix Baumgartner is set to leap, in the most literal sense of the word, from relative obscurity into the history books. How? By jumping to earth from the edge of space, likely breaking the sound barrier as he does so. How does one go from humble Austrian beginnings to a capsule 120,000 feet (about 23 miles) above the Earth's surface? Make a comparatively tiny leap past the break to find out.Continue reading Leap of faith: Felix Baumgartner's historic jump from the edge of spaceFiled under: Science, AltLeap of faith: Felix Baumgartner's historic jump from the edge of space originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 16:00:00 EDT. 2013 Dodge Dart Aero fuel miser priced from $19,295*
Filed under: Sedan, Dodge Hitting at least 40 miles per gallon is practically a necessity to compete in the compact car segment these days, and the 2013 Dodge Dart has hit this mark with the all-new Aero package. The Dart Aero is Dodge's fuel economy package for the car that starts at $19,295 (not including the $795 destination charge), and while Hyundai has been saving the asterisks since 2010, many other automakers use a similar method to get that magic 40-mpg rating onto the Monroney label. The Dart Aero receives Fiat's 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo I4 and numerous other changes to hit up to 41 mpg highway with the manual transmission which is an improvement of 2 mpg alone over Chrysler's initial estimates for the car. Opting for the new dual dry clutch transmission will drop the highway number to an even 40 mpg - cars with either transmission are rated at 28 mpg city and 32 mpg combined. These are significant gains over initial Dart models with the 2.0-liter engine that were rated at up to 25 mpg city/36 mpg highway/29 mpg combined. This new engine also delivers the same 160 horsepower as the base engine, but it adds an extra 36 pound-feet of torque rated at 184 lb-ft. Other than the new engine and the advanced DDCT gearbox, the Dart Aero was able to deliver such an improvement in fuel economy courtesy of a lower profile, active grille shutters, underbody aero kit and low-rolling resistance tires. Compared to the base 2013 Dart, the Aero package is a $3,300 premium, but cars like the Focus SFE, Civic HF, Cruze Eco, Mazda3 Skyactiv and Jetta TDI all charge a premium for playing in the 40-mpg sandbox. Included in this higher price, the Dart Aero comes standard with some of the Dart's unique features like the 8.4-inch media center, the Dart's seven-inch TFT gauge cluster and one of the car's most stylish elements, the LED "racetrack" taillights. It isn't clear when the Dart Aero will be on sale, but Chrysler says that the car went into production over the summer. Scroll down to read the full press release on this car.Continue reading 2013 Dodge Dart Aero fuel miser priced from $19,295*2013 Dodge Dart Aero fuel miser priced from $19,295* originally appeared on Autoblog on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 14:29:00 EST. Dude recreates first-gen iPod in-browser, won't put 1,000 songs in your pocket
Here's a bit of web fun to liven up your weekend: a digital artist by the name of Pritesh Desai has recreated a fully functional first-generation iPod that you can play directly in your browser. In remembrance of Steve Jobs, Desai built the faux iPod using HTML5, CSS3, and a touch of jQuery. You can drag the click wheel around just like with the real deal, change the volume, hit play / pause and even skip tracks. Especially nice is the addition of Extras like the Clock and the Calendar. Unfortunately, you won't be able to play any of your own tunes, but Desai had compiled a list of Creative Commons songs, so you can see how the player works. The next step is for someone to fill this up with hits of the early aughts ("Last Nite" by The Strokes, perhaps?) so you can truly travel back in time to the heydays of Windows XP and the Enron scandal.Filed under: MiscDude recreates first-gen iPod in-browser, won't put 1,000 songs in your pocket originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 15:27:00 EDT. Infiniti Emerg-E not going into production
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Infiniti, Nissan, Paris Motor Show In case there was ever any doubt, the Emerg-E extended-range plug-in supercar from Infiniti won't really, uh, emerge. The new head of the Nissan luxury badge says the Emerg-E won't be built as a production vehicle, UK publication Autocar reports, citing Infiniti chief Johan de Nysschen's presentation at the recent Paris Motor Show. Instead, aspects of the concept car will be used in the powertrain and design of other models. De Nysschen specifically said the Emerg-E would offer "strong cues" in the G-series. The wireless-charging-capable Infiniti LE is still due for a launch in 2014. Infiniti released pictures of the Emerg-E in February and a month later showed off the concept car at the Geneva Motor Show. The automaker said the Emerg-E had a 300-mile range from battery and gas tank and could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in four seconds.Infiniti Emerg-E not going into production originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 13:54:00 EST. Nielsen says game consoles get men to use TV more: hurray, we think

Nielsen says game consoles get men to use TV more: hurray, we think
We're not sure if we should always cheer figures that reflect sedentary behavior. Still, chalk one up for greater (if superficial) gender equality. Nielsen finds that, as of this past March, men who owned a modern game console like the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 or Wii were using their TVs almost as much as women: while males in the broader population typically spend 37 fewer minutes in front of the big screen every day than females, that gap shrank to a negligible 11 minutes when console use came into play. Unfortunately, the agency doesn't say just what's getting men to tune in for that much longer. Gaming is the most likely culprit, but a raft of streaming video options could have some of those refined couch potatoes watching Hulu or Netflix instead of playing one more round of Gears of War. If consoles have people of all genders spending more time together, we're in favor of it; given that men still spend over twice as much time on consoles as women, though, it's clear there's still a bridge to cross if we want more of a balance in the kinds of TV activity we enjoy.Filed under: Gaming, Home Entertainment, Alt, Sony, Microsoft, NintendoNielsen says game consoles get men to use TV more: hurray, we think originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 13:49:00 EDT. Starbucks' Square Rollout Gets A Launch Date; No Loyalty Card Integration (Yet)

Starbucks' Square Rollout Gets A Launch Date; No Loyalty Card Integration (Yet)
At its three-day Global Leadership Conference this week, Starbucks announced further details about its planned rollout and support for Square's mobile payments platform. First revealed in August, the deal will allow iPhone and Android users to pay using the Square mobile app at Starbucks' 7,000 U.S. locations. Now, we have a more exact timeframe for that launch: early November. (Previously, the company had said "before the holidays.") But Starbucks has also been busy updating its own native mobile applications, which allow customers to pay with their Starbucks card via an app. And now that app supports Passbook on iOS, too. While it's good that a company like Starbucks is embracing mobile payment innovation, in the immediate future, mobile payments are going to get a little messy.

Likely HTC Windows Phone 8X with AT&T-friendly LTE surfaces at the FCC, just in time
Isn't that convenient. With only weeks left to go before the official Windows Phone 8 launch event, what's likely a version of the HTC Windows Phone 8X with North American LTE support has stopped by the FCC for approval. The PM23300 variant we see here (the international 8X is the PM23200) supports both the needed 700MHz LTE band for its eventual appearance at AT&T as well as AWS for wider AT&T coverage and the big three Canadian carriers. All are good signs that HTC is just about ready, although T-Mobile and Verizon subscribers might not want to get overly excited just yet -- there's no AWS 3G, CDMA or Verizon-ready 700MHz LTE to be found on this 8X, which shows that any US launch will still demand multiple editions. The others won't be far behind in the FCC race with that November release window already locked in.Filed under: Cellphones, Mobile, HTCLikely HTC Windows Phone 8X with AT&T-friendly LTE surfaces at the FCC, just in time originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 13:18:00 EDT. Japan's LED-stacked cubesat will burn Morse code into the heavens

Japan's LED-stacked cubesat will burn Morse code into the heavens
If you thought cloud writing was cool, then how about a message from space burnt into the night sky? A group of unassuming cubesats recently left the comfort of the ISS and joined Earth's orbit -- among them was FITSAT-1 (aka Niwaka), a four-inch-cubed Japanese satellite covered in high-powered LEDs. Its mission is to broadcast the message "Hi this is Niwaka Japan" in Morse code, using bursts of intense light to draw dots and dashes across the heavens. FITSAT-1 was originally planned to appear only over Japan, but a flurry of interest means it'll be touring the globe, starting next month. It'll also find time for its studies, beaming VGA images snapped with an onboard camera back to Earth, to test a high-speed data transmitter. While its creator, Professor Takushi Tanaka, has said the Morse broadcast has "no practical aim", we think it would make a good emergency beacon for natural disasters (or, more worryingly, alien invasions). FITSAT-1 will try and fulfill all requests for appearances, but it can't control the weather, so you'd better hope for a clear night if it visits your part of the world. If you're as excited as we are to see it in action, bookmark the source links below, which should be updated with its orbit schedule in the near future. And, even if you don't speak Japanese, the video after the break will give you an idea of what to expect.Continue reading Japan's LED-stacked cubesat will burn Morse code into the heavensFiled under: Science, AltJapan's LED-stacked cubesat will burn Morse code into the heavens originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 12:53:00 EDT. Lessons learned spinning around Hong Kong on a Brammo Enertia

Lessons learned spinning around Hong Kong on a Brammo Enertia
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, On Two Wheels, Videos A biker in Hong Kong shot video for 20 minutes riding an electric Brammo Enertia. Here's a few observations from viewing it, which you can do below: The Enertia doesn't have a mild humming electric motor, like the Nissan Leaf. It's a piercing noise that cranks up while driving uphill and when picking up speed. Hong Kong is not nearly as crowded as I expected, with the bike traveling smoothly from Kowloon Bay to Central Hong Kong. I expected jam-packed traffic in a country that's sold a lot of new cars to a workforce that's moved from countryside into the big cities. Of course, this video could have been filmed during downtime, perhaps on a Sunday afternoon. This bike can travel about 80 miles on a charge with this type of freeway driving. After the 20-minute ride at between 55 and 75 miles per hour, it had 75 percent of the battery left. That's better than some of the other e-bikes on the market are getting. The Enertia is different than the Brammo Empulse. It has no gears, and the engine rpm kept getting higher and higher. Not having to shift could come in handy when stuck in dense traffic and needing a smoother ride. There's supposed to be ton of e-bikes on Chinese streets, but not many of them show up in this video. Notice anything else?Continue reading Lessons learned spinning around Hong Kong on a Brammo EnertiaLessons learned spinning around Hong Kong on a Brammo Enertia originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 12:02:00 EST. Dish gives up effort to turn Blockbuster into a Netflix competitor
It's been an especially bumpy road for the Blockbuster brand these past few years, and things just got a bit more rough. In an interview with Bloomberg, Dish Network founder and CEO Charlie Ergen confirmed that the company is abandoning its current efforts to challenge Netflix with Blockbuster, saying that it no longer plans to use the brand as a video streaming or DVD-by-mail service in the US. Ergen did say that Dish had other plans for Blockbuster, but he didn't elaborate on what those may be. He also seems to be fairly resigned to the whole matter, saying "worst case, we'll take our money after having wasted some time, not much money, and life goes on."Filed under: Internet, HDDish gives up effort to turn Blockbuster into a Netflix competitor originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 12:27:00 EDT. Australia Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder goes live as the world's quickest radio telescope

Australia Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder goes live as the world's quickest radio telescope
Australia's Shire of Murchison is quickly becoming a hotbed for radio telescopes. As of of Friday, the territory is operating the world's fastest radio telescope in the form of the Australia Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). The 36-antenna grid's eventual use of six phased array feeds, each with 188 receivers, will let it scan a field of view 150 times larger than the moon's visible area while processing that information much faster than a typical single-pixel radio telescope feed -- CSIRO estimates that an image of the Centaurus A galaxy that would take 10,000 hours to process with rivals should take five minutes with ASKAP. Ultimately, the array should grow to 60 antennas as part of the Square Kilometer Array, which includes South Africa in its hunt for pulsars, quasars and other unique parts of the universe. Just don't get your hopes up for booking alien listening sessions anytime soon. Commissioning started virtually as soon as the ribbon was cut, and scientists have already scheduled their usage slots for the next five years. We're sure we'll get over any frustration when we see the first ASKAP results published within the next year.Filed under: Science, AltAustralia Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder goes live as the world's quickest radio telescope originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 11:52:00 EDT. Print your own headphones on a MakerBot Replicator and beat Dre at his own game
As 3D printers become more and more accessible to a consumer audience, one question lingers above the rest: why? Granted, they're incredibly cool, but what, if any, are the practical implication of such a technology? For the most part, the great ambassadors of 3D printing have largely been printable toys -- cool, but not particularly useful. The question, as posed by John Mabry reads as follows, What if printed prototypes could become actual products? Meaning, once off the print bed an object could be assembled without any tools and be made functional by readily attainable components. An attempt at the answer comes in the form of the 13:30 printable headphones, which can by created on a MakerBot Replicator and coupled with some off-the-shelf components, making for a pair of slick-looking, functional headphones that, at the very least, will help you stand out from the rest of the Beats By Dre enthusiasts on a crowded subway train.Filed under: Home Entertainment, AltPrint your own headphones on a MakerBot Replicator and beat Dre at his own game originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Oct 2012 11:36:00 EDT. If you're wondering when Starbucks is finally going to get around to rolling out Square, wonder no more. The company announced that starting in November customers will be able to pay for their no-fat soy mocha lattes using the platform founded by Jack Dorsey. Of course, being able to use Square Wallet at the nation's largest coffee chain is a major milestone for the mobile payment scene as a whole, but loyal customers likely already have a Starbucks card and its associated app. Only problem with both Square and the Starbucks app is you still need to carry cash to tip your barista. Thankfully, at some point in 2013, the company will start accepting tips through its own app and Square Wallet.
