Google Maps adds natural terrain outside of satellite views, reminds us the world isn't flat
Everyone knows that Google prides itself on mapping accuracy. If you hadn't checked beyond the base maps in the past few years, though, you'd have thought the terrain was charted in the "here be dragons" era -- it's been as flat as a board. Take a second look today. Google has overhauled Google Maps worldwide to show hills, deserts and lush zones as well as label the geographical features that hadn't previously been identifiable in a sea of white. The map overhaul isn't so nuanced enough as to remind us how steep the hills can be in San Francisco, but it will remind us that Gobi refers to more than just a chipset.Filed under: GPS, Internet, GoogleGoogle Maps adds natural terrain outside of satellite views, reminds us the world isn't flat originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 17:02:00 EDT. Report: Toyota leading fight against Mexican plan to align fuel economy standards with US

Report: Toyota leading fight against Mexican plan to align fuel economy standards with US
Filed under: MPG, Toyota, Legislation and Policy, North America Fuel-efficient cars might be nearly synonymous with Toyota here in the US, but in Mexico, the Japanese automaker is reportedly leading a fight in a dustup over more stringent automobile fuel efficiency regulations. Mexico's government is reportedly trying to make its own mile-per-gallon rules the same as those in the US as part of an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout its economy, but Toyota isn't taking too kindly to the proposed legislation.Reuters reports that Toyota has obtained a federal court injunction against Nom-163, the law that would align Mexican regulations with US standards. Amia, the carmakers' association in Mexico, has joined Toyota because they say the rules are too strict and will reduce sales because automakers will have to charge more to develop these fuel-efficient cars. Amia also wants Mexican rules to have all of the incentives that the US rules do, and says "central Mexico's high altitude makes higher fuel efficiency harder to achieve," Reuters writes. According to the report, the government figures that the industry just wants to continue selling dirty cars in Mexico, the kind that are are too dirty to be legally sold in other places. It's certainly not because the automakers can't make clean cars in the region - Mexico's environment undersecretary, Sandra Herrera Flores, points out that "Mexico exports 80 percent of all cars produced locally. From that, 75 percent head to U.S., Canada and Europe, so these vehicles already comply with regulations we are trying to pursue, or even tougher regulations." If the new rules are adopted, Mexico calculates that carbon dioxide emissions would decrease by 160 million tons by 2030. There was a 60-day comment period for the new law, but Toyota instead filed its lawsuit in the Tribunal Federal de Justicia Fiscal y Administrativa in early September and, just a few weeks later, the court issued an injunction. The National Resources Defense Council's Rich Kassel called Toyota's actions "truly stunning." He writes, "Toyota filed its lawsuit before the public comment period even closed. And, the company only filed short comments on the Mexican proposal late in the process. They have not issued any public statement that explains their actions. Indeed, they have never spoken publicly about any concerns whatsoever with the Mexican fuel economy proposal." AutoblogGreen has solicited Toyota for comment on this story, but have not heard back as of publication time.Toyota leading fight against Mexican plan to align fuel economy standards with US originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 16:30:00 EST. Samsung Galaxy S III mini radios get probed by FCC
The Samsung Galaxy S III mini (aka the GT-i8190) may have a Napolean complex, carrying as it does the name of its bigger sibling while endowed with a garden-variety 4-inch, 800 x 480 screen and other downmarket specs. But that didn't stop the inevitable FCC rendezvous, where its array of 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, GPS, GLONASS, FM, Bluetooth 4.0 (LE) and NFC radios were waved through (and lack of 4G confirmed). That means the new runt of the Galaxy litter should be free to travel to Europe soon for €439 retail -- but there's still no word on when smaller form-factor lovers stateside will be able to grab it.Filed under: Cellphones, Mobile, SamsungSamsung Galaxy S III mini radios get probed by FCC originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 16:29:00 EDT. Windows 8 is in stores today -- are you buying a copy?
That special moment has come which usually rolls around only once every three years: Microsoft has released a new version of Windows. For the version 8 update, though, the stakes are higher than ever. Redmond isn't just trying to convince legions of existing Windows users that they should break their PC update cycles. It's trying to reclaim a foothold in a tablet space that's now dominated by Apple and Google -- and it's dipping into self-designed computers for the first time with a Surface tablet that theoretically represents Microsoft's perfect vision. But how well is Windows 8 resonating with you? Did you download a copy as soon as the servers were warmed up, or do you see it as a calamity that restricts a perfectly good platform? Sound off in our poll and in the comments below. Microsoft offering free Media Center upgrade to Windows 8 Pro users until January 31st 2013
Home theater PC enthusiasts weren't too thrilled when Microsoft announced that it was stripping Media Center and its codecs for DVD playback and broadcast TV from Windows 8 in favor of a paid add-on. The folks from Redmond are offering a temporary reprieve, in an effort to reward early adopters. Windows 8 Media Center Pack is for free to customers who purchase Windows 8 Pro... at least until January 31st 2013. This promo requires that you enter your product key at the company's website in order to receive your free upgrade. Sadly, when the discount period for Pro upgrades ends, so too does the ability to score Media Center for free. Microsoft never revealed the price for its Media Center Pack, only referring to it as "economical." While we appreciate affordable software, there's nothing more cost effective than a freebie. Thanks Neal!Filed under: Software, MicrosoftMicrosoft offering free Media Center upgrade to Windows 8 Pro users until January 31st 2013 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 15:27:00 EDT. Video: Motor Trend suggests Tesla Model S may be most important new car since Ford Model T
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors, Videos "It may very well be the most important new car since the Model T." That's the summation of the latest video from Motor Trend and its Ignition video series, speaking of the Tesla Model S. Though the buff site had previously released a video featuring a range-testing excursion from LA-to-Vegas (and back), this time its cameras were out to capture whether it proves its worth as a car. For MT's Carlos Lago, the criteria involved in the equation includes important things like, "How fast is it, how fun is it to drive." And while he does spend some tire-smoking time testing the five-door hatchback's performance parameters, the approach overall is more holistic than some we've seen. Adding up the performance, style, technology and price, Lago compares the Tesla favorably with the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Porsche Panamera. He says it feels "like car 3.0." It all kind of gives us hope our favorite fastback will come out on top when MT reveals its Car Of The Year sometime in November.Scroll down to watch one of the best-looking Model S video reviews to date, and let us know in Comments if you agree with its conclusions.Continue reading Motor Trend suggests Tesla Model S may be most important new car since Ford Model TMotor Trend suggests Tesla Model S may be most important new car since Ford Model T originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 14:58:00 EST. As touring acts grow weary from their travels across the US of A, Moog has a spot for them to get re-energized. Inside the synth maker's North Carolina headquarters sits a room that's decked out with the company's analog tech and effects (including a Model 15 synthesizer) -- waiting for musicians who are on the road to stop by for a visit. It's here in the Sound Lab where the likes of Mutemath, Phantogram, OK Go and Ra Ra Riot grab their Moog gear of choice to re-imagine some of their existing tracks. Yesterday, there was an App.net hackathon and Steve showed me what he made, and it's really cool. If you're unsure, App.net is a project that is kind of like Twitter, for those who don't want to necessarily be on Twitter. Kind of.

Nikkei, Reuters claim Panasonic may quit European cellphones after its second bruising

Nikkei, Reuters claim Panasonic may quit European cellphones after its second bruising
Once bitten, twice shy. Panasonic backed out of the European cellphone market in 2005 and gave it a second chance with its Eluga smartphone this spring, but both Nikkei and Reuters hear that the company is already considering its second withdrawal. A tough economy and a presently successful cost-cutting initiative (not to mention an uninspiring product, if we're honest) could have Panasonic exiting Europe before its fiscal year winds down at the end of March. Of the two as yet unconfirmed sources, Nikkei is going even further -- it believes that Panasonic is considering either a partnership to justify its Japanese business or else waving goodbye to cellphones altogether. Nothing's certain until Panasonic says so. If there's any truth to the story, though, we could see one more casualty in a rapidly thinning smartphone market.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileNikkei, Reuters claim Panasonic may quit European cellphones after its second bruising originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 13:58:00 EDT. Google Nexus 10 leaks: Android 4.2, Exynos 5250 (1.7GHz), 2,560 x 1,600 resolution
Unless we're looking at one of the most elaborately photographed fakes in the world, this is the Nexus 10. With the Nexus 7 apparently going over quite well at just $199, it was only ever a matter of time before the Nexus family expanded to house a 10-incher. With Google's own Vic Gundotra posting images from a unit that he's using at some exotic locale, it seems that another unit has slipped beneath the camera at BriefMobile. The site has managed to apprehend one of the 10.1-inch slates, and in turn has discovered quite the bounty of information. Internally, there's (reportedly) a dual-core 1.7GHz Samsung Exynos 5250, a Mali-T604 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (though no microSD expansion slot), a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, NFC / WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a Super AMOLED panel with a drool-worthy 2,560 x 1,600 screen resolution -- yeah, that's well into "Retina" territory at 298.9 pixels per inch. You may recognize that Exynos 5250 from Google's recently released $249 Chromebook, but here, it's being used to push Android 4.2. Those hungry for more can visit the source link, but don't go in hoping to extract an asking price.Continue reading Google Nexus 10 leaks: Android 4.2, Exynos 5250 (1.7GHz), 2,560 x 1,600 resolutionFiled under: Tablets, ASUS, GoogleGoogle Nexus 10 leaks: Android 4.2, Exynos 5250 (1.7GHz), 2,560 x 1,600 resolution originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 13:25:00 EDT. Surface pre-order deliveries delayed in the UK and Canada, Microsoft offers coupon for the inconvenience
We began hearing grumblings of delayed Surface deliveries in the very early hours of this morning, and it seems it's not an unlucky few that are suffering, but an unlucky many. There were reports of delays to shipments in the UK and Canada less than a week ago, but Microsoft was quick to dismiss the claims as an error and put minds at rest. Now, it seems, the white flag has been waved and blame acknowledged. Eager to appease disgruntled customers, the company is offering a £50 or $50 Canadian coupon (depending on your accent) to spend in the Windows Store as recompense. While it provides little relief to those who had a shut-in weekend planned, at least you can trick out your new toy when it finally arrives, at Microsoft's expense. And, if you've received neither a Surface nor a coupon, we suggest you reach out for the freebie -- if your fingers aren't hitting tiles, they might as well be hitting keys instead. Video: Nissan Leaf master seller Paul Scott predicts record sales month [w/video]
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, AutoblogGreen Exclusive, Videos Our friend Paul Scott knows a thing or two about electric vehicles (EVs), having been involved with Plug In America for years. These days, he's a Nissan Leaf salesman and his top technique is to, as he puts it, put butts in seats. Once people drive an EV, they often walk away with a better understanding of the potential change that EVs offer. Since he's one of the top EV salespeople in the US - he works for Nissan of Downtown LA - we asked how things have been going recently. The short version, Scott told AutoblogGreen, is that things are going incredibly well. "Sales are very good right now," he said. "Nissan's aggressive pricing has jump started the Leaf sales and especially the Leaf lease. I'm pretty sure we'll see a record month for the Leaf when the national numbers come in. If other dealers are experiencing what we're experiencing, it'll be a record for certain. "When the monthly payment dropped to less than many people spend for gas, the phone began to ring constantly. I delivered four Leafs in one day last week and I'll have a record month since coming to Nissan of Downtown LA last year. Our inventory is dropping fast, so much so that we've ordered more from the port." Part of the potential change is what Scott calls the realization that, "'The oil companies [can] pay for their new electric car.' The money [people] were giving the oil companies is more than they pay for the Leaf, so they get to use some of the savings for electricity and the rest can go into their kid's college fund. "A good measure of how well the car is doing is that employees of our dealership began leasing the cars. This is very important since they can now speak from experience when selling the car to customers. Their glee in saving money on gas is clearly evident when they speak to customers and this becomes infectious."Automotive Digest also recently spoke with Scott, and you can see a video of that interview below.Continue reading Nissan Leaf master seller Paul Scott predicts record sales month [w/video]Nissan Leaf master seller Paul Scott predicts record sales month [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 11:54:00 EST. AUO develops IGZO-based, 65-inch 4K TV screen, vows high resolution without the high power
It's now clear that Sharp doesn't have an exclusive lock on IGZO displays, even for the big-screen TVs that are still the company's domain. AU Optronics has developed a 65-inch IGZO panel that wields the very light-friendly technology to reach 4K resolutions without the usual penalties -- as the screen doesn't need much backlighting to illuminate all those pixels, it can stay slim and keep the shocking energy bills to a minimum. The smaller size and miserly power draw also leave a real chance that any pricing will be closer to the mere mortal realm than current 84-inch behemoths. And while it's mostly up to other companies to decide if and when they use AUO's flagship display, we'll have choices of our own should the IGZO TV still be too rich for our blood: the Taiwan firm has simultaneously developed a more conventional, 55-inch 4K screen with a wide color range as well as a 50-inch, 1080p panel with an extra-skinny 0.14-inch bezel. It's at least good to know that there's already competition for technology that's just getting started.Filed under: Displays, Home Entertainment, HDAUO develops IGZO-based, 65-inch 4K TV screen, vows high resolution without the high power originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 12:32:00 EDT. Pantech Flex review

Pantech Flex review
Pantech is known for producing budget Android smartphones that punch above their weight, and the Flex is no exception. Available now on AT&T for $50 with a two-year contract, it delivers a dual-core Snapdragon S4 -- the same chip that lurks within mightier phones such as the Galaxy S III and One X -- along with a qHD display and LTE connectivity. The phone certainly hits a number of the check boxes for value seekers, but there's something that makes the Flex very different from other smartphones on the market: it has a dual personality. Folks, prepare for memories of At Ease, Microsoft Bob and Packard Bell Navigator to come rushing back. The Pantech Flex features a unique launcher known as Easy Experience, which caters to those who might find Ice Cream Sandwich overwhelming. Fortunately, there's also a standard launcher for experts. In that regard, the Flex is deserving of its name. Unlike most handsets on the market, it's targeting both broke college students and technophobes just the same. Of course, we're here to answer a greater question: is the Pantech Flex worthy of being your next smartphone? Join us after the break for the answer.Gallery: Pantech Flex reviewContinue reading Pantech Flex reviewFiled under: Cellphones, Mobile, AT&TPantech Flex review originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 12:00:00 EDT. Samsung Galaxy Premier shows at Taiwan regulator, carries few traces of its Nexus roots
The Galaxy Premier has so far existed only on the fringes; we've seen unconfirmed benchmarks, model name mentions and press renders, but virtually nothing tangible. Taiwan's NCC regulatory body has made Samsung's phone much more corporeal with several photos of the device under its GT-i9260 badge. While the live look only confirms 3G and short-range wireless on the outside, it proves that there's very little of that claimed Galaxy Nexus DNA left on the outside -- other than the possible 4.65-inch screen, the Premier has fallen completely in line with the Galaxy S III's design language. It's safe to presume that we won't be using stock Android on this handset, then. We're just left waiting on Samsung for confirmation of the mid-range smartphone's details and exactly when we can give it a try.Filed under: Cellphones, Mobile, SamsungSamsung Galaxy Premier shows at Taiwan regulator, carries few traces of its Nexus roots originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 11:47:00 EDT. The app / widget combo will aggregate offers from 12 pushers, including familiar names like LivingSocial and Trip Advisor, although HTC hopes to add more categories in the future with further partnerships. The service will show you local deals tailored to your tastes, as well as exclusive offers on HTC products, which you can sort, review, bookmark and share from within the app. Discount-hunters from the UK, Italy, Germany, France and Spain will get first access to a catalogue of 1,700 initial deals on the 8X / 8S Windows phones and Android One X+. OG One X and One S owners will find themselves that little bit richer shortly after, snagging the app via a software update. There's no word on plans to bring the deal aggregator to North American shores, but for Europeans, it's time to start thinking about which spa treatment you want first.Continue reading HTC to launch Best Deals coupon app for discount-chasing EuropeansFiled under: Cellphones, Software, Mobile, HTCHTC to launch Best Deals coupon app for discount-chasing Europeans originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Oct 2012 11:28:00 EDT. We've stopped calling weeks like these "big" because that gives them too much credit for essentiallly trying to destroy us, from a journlistic perspective, without actually destroying us. From now on we're only calling weeks "big" if they include the singularity or a human massacre in Pittsburgh, thank you very much. Google is about to throw down. At next week's NYC Android event, the big G is expected yell "me too!" and reveal a full line of Nexus devices. Watch out, Mr. Consumer. These devices aren't just for the nerds. Google is ready to take the Nexus brand mainstream and provide legitimate alternatives to the iPhones, iPads and Galaxy devices of the world.
