Must See HDTV (October 22nd - 28th)

Must See HDTV (October 22nd - 28th)
While baseball's postseason moves on to its final round, football is just hitting its stride and NBA preseason action is just beginning to get interesting. This week Blade Runner gets yet another HD home release, there's one more presidential debate, and on Friday the maker of Pushing Daisies returns for a one-off / backdoor pilot attempt called Mockingbird Lane -- check out a teaser after the break. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames. I, Robot (3D) A 3D Blu-ray release isn't uncommon these days, however I, Robot has a fresh twist: it wasn't in 3D in theaters, ever. Fox has made the interesting decision of converting the flick in post and releasing a 3D version exclusively for the home. Fans of the 2004 Will Smith flick can snag a $24.99 Blu-ray 3D set, but if you pre-ordered at Comic-Con, it comes with a bust of the robot character, Sonny. We'll have to wait and see if this trend takes off (Fox says it has more titles in the pipeline), or if people prefer the standard original releases. ($24.99 on Amazon) Forza Horizon The Forza series has brought its brand of sim racing to Xbox consoles for several generations, but this latest version takes all of its underlying technology on a trip to the arcade side of town. You won't be doing so much tweaking under the hood this time, but there's still a healthy selection of cars plus options for night and off road racing to keep you interested. Joystiq was impressed enough by its "massive toy chest of hyper-accurate Hot Wheels" to give it four out of five stars, racing fans can check out a demo on Xbox Live now. ($59.99 on Amazon) World Series Baseball fans, it all comes down to this. For the championship in 2012 the Detroit Tigers will face TBD in an epic battle that kicks off Wednesday night. Either St. Louis or San Francisco will be representing the National League in the World Series, but we'll have to wait until tonight's game to know which one. The days for the games are already locked in however, so clear your schedule as needed.Continue reading Must See HDTV (October 22nd - 28th)Filed under: Home Entertainment, HDMust See HDTV (October 22nd - 28th) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 17:34:00 EDT. Editorial: Turning point for the tortoise and the hare
That meteor shower was a bust. I'll never get back the five minutes I spent waiting to be awed. Anyone similarly impatient will be in gratification heaven for the next week, as the biggest cosmic bodies in the tech cosmos streak across the sky with announcements, device releases, price shifts and earnings reports. Tossing astronomy aside for its failure to bedazzle, I turn to astrology to illuminate the upcoming eventful days. From a This Week in Astronomy blog: "A Venus-Pluto-Uranus T-square will be testing relationships and finances. The Sun enters Scorpio and aspects every slower planet except Pluto, and there's an intense Mars-Jupiter opposition." I don't understand most of that, but I know about opposition. That fits. The energy of opposition crackles in the ecosystem warfare waged this week by Apple, Microsoft and Google. Switching now from inscrutable astrology to fables (because next to cosmic messaging I like simple allegories to explain life), we can see that the slow-but-steady tortoise is placing the most audacious bet.Continue reading Editorial: Turning point for the tortoise and the hareFiled under: Cellphones, Tablets, Software, Apple, Microsoft, GoogleEditorial: Turning point for the tortoise and the hare originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 16:54:00 EDT. Growing Up Geek: Philip Palermo
Welcome to Growing Up Geek, a feature where we take a look back at our youth, and tell stories of growing up to be the nerds that we are. This week, we have our very own Philip Palermo! In case you couldn't tell from that pirate / bandit / pimp / vampire pictured above, I sometimes have trouble making up my mind. It took me forever to decide what I wanted to be that Halloween -- figuring out what I wanted to be when I grew up has taken even longer. It's strange to think that a few landmark tech purchases during my life helped make who I am today. Our family's first computer, the NES, a used DSLR -- just the simple act of bringing tech home and experimenting with it seemed to shape, reshape and re-reshape my projected career path.Continue reading Growing Up Geek: Philip PalermoFiled under: Misc, AltGrowing Up Geek: Philip Palermo originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 15:45:00 EDT. AltCar: AltCar 2012: Firefly ESV ready to check in on parking meters
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, AutoblogGreen Exclusive, Santa Monica Alt Car Expo The all-electric Firefly ESV looks exactly like the kind of vehicle that would be used to go around and hand out parking tickets. Luckily, that's exactly what it was designed to do. Good Earth Energy (maker of the ESV, which stands for Essential Services Vehicle) itself says the vehicle has an "aggressive design" and "appealing curves" and for $29,775 it could be yours. During an interview at AltCar 2012, Pete Barsky, the vice president of sales for Good Earth Energy told AutoblogGreen that the ESV is currently used in around a half-dozen cities in the US (e.g., Clayton, MS, Seattle, WA and Roanoke, VA) but he wouldn't say how many orders the company has for the Fort Worth, TX-made three wheeler. The trike can have the seat on the left, right or center, and most of the Firefly ESVs sold have the right-hand seat installed because this is most convenient for parking enforcement officers. Inside the cabin, the ESV defines Spartan aesthetic. The buttons and knobs are utilitarian to the extreme, as you can see in the photo gallery. You'll get on/low/high settings for the heat, and you'll like it. Designed for people who know what they're doing, the basic info screen in the center of the dash can display information on individual cells in the battery pack in case one needs replacing. The company says it expects the pack to have a lifespan "of more than four years." Speaking of the lithium-iron phosphate battery, the powertrain uses a 14.4-kWh pack and a 100-volt, 35-horsepower AC induction motor. With an electronically limited top speed of 45 miles per hour, the Firefly ESV can go around 60 miles on a charge. That should be plenty to roam downtowns looking for scofflaws. Firefly's visit to the 2011 AltCar Expo was captured on video and is available below, along with a more general video of the car in action.Continue reading AltCar 2012: Firefly ESV ready to check in on parking metersAltCar 2012: Firefly ESV ready to check in on parking meters originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 15:11:00 EST. Hulu Plus app heads to Windows 8 PCs and tablets, tailored for new UI (video)
Windows 8 users, what with their "Modern" UI and pinned applications, won't have to stoop to using Hulu Plus in an antiquated internet browser any longer. Hulu today announced its brand new Windows 8 and Windows 8 tablet application, which is designed specifically for use with the tiled UI that Micrsoft's new multiplatform OS is based around. The new app aims to take advantage of that UI in a variety of ways -- pinning an episode or show to your start screen, for instance, or multitasking with other apps while Hulu continues playing in a smaller window, cropped to the left. We've dropped a video walkthrough of the app just below the break. Those with early access to Windows 8 can grab the app right now in the Windows Store through this link (at least, when it goes live again -- it seems to be down right now); the app will be available to the rest of us at launch on October 26th, and on Windows 8 tablets the same day.Continue reading Hulu Plus app heads to Windows 8 PCs and tablets, tailored for new UI (video)Filed under: Desktops, Handhelds, Home Entertainment, Laptops, Tablets, Software, MicrosoftHulu Plus app heads to Windows 8 PCs and tablets, tailored for new UI (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 14:51:00 EDT. LG exec claims Nexus due at October 29th event, ships to India one month later
It's either a premature confirmation or one of the larger executive gaffes we've seen in recent memory, but it's hard to ignore. LG's Mobile Product Planning lead for India, Amit Gujral, just claimed in an interview with IBNLive that the "LG Nexus" will launch at Google's October 29th event and ship to India "by the end of November." He even stuck his neck out to offer specifications -- the Nexus will reportedly have a very Optimus G-like 4.7-inch screen and quad-core 1.5GHz chip while throwing the unreleased Android 4.2 into the equation. Nothing's official so far despite the statements, and we're not expecting to Google to spoil its own party; if Gujral really does have the inside track, though, we may have been given a peek at the main attraction in Google's playground.Filed under: Cellphones, Mobile, Google, LGLG exec claims Nexus due at October 29th event, ships to India one month later originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 14:09:00 EDT. Official: VW shows Taigun small CUV at São Paulo motor show
Filed under: Concept Cars, Crossover, Volkswagen, Misc. Auto Shows, South America, Design/Style We didn't have to wait very long for recent reports of a new small Volkswagen crossover to come true... well, sort of. In a side note to our report on a seven-passenger VW CUV last week, we also mentioned the possibility of a new sub-Tiguan crossover, and we may have gotten our first look at such a vehicle courtesy of this Volkswagen Taigun Concept that is debuting at the São Paulo motor show. Although the Taigun Concept suggests that VW has all but given up on imbuing its new vehicles with comprehensible names, this new softroader also looks to balance practicality and fuel economy. With a slightly smaller footprint than the current Golf, the Taigun actually has more interior space (including more front headroom), but it's the powertrain that could really make this B-segment CUV standout if it sees production. Using a small gasoline 1.0-liter direct-injected and turbocharged three-cylinder under the hood, the Taigun Concept still has pretty respectable small car numbers, generating 108 horsepower and 129 pound-feet of torque. However, the true beauty of this engine is that VW puts its fuel economy numbers at 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers - around 50 miles per gallon on the EU cycle. Even the styling of the Taigun shows that VW's current design language looks good on just about any size, with its boxy shape and short overhangs, but the automaker says that it is using Brazil's emerging auto show to gauge interest for such a vehicle before making any decisions as to whether or not to put it into production. For more info on VW's latest concept, check out the official press release below.Continue reading VW shows Taigun small CUV at São Paulo motor showVW shows Taigun small CUV at São Paulo motor show originally appeared on Autoblog on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 13:30:00 EST. Isis' NFC payments go live in Austin and Salt Lake City: 3 carriers, 9 phones, 1 long way to go (video)
To say that the launch of Isis has felt drawn out would be a mild understatement. The alliance first signaled its intentions two years ago, detailed its first markets one year ago and faced a last-minute delay. All the ducks are finally in a row, however, and residents of both Austin as well as Salt Lake City can tap to pay (or score discounts) at the "hundreds" of locations that accept NFC-based purchases through American Express, Capital One, Chase and Isis' own cash card. Launch day brings app- and SIM-enabled access for nine devices spread rather unevenly across AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon: only the Droid Incredible 4G LTE is confirmed working for Verizon subscribers, while the rest are divided more equally between multiple Samsung Galaxies and HTC devices like the Amaze 4G and One X. Over 20 phones should be Isis-aware before the end of the year. It's a potentially strong start to one of the few truly cross-network mobile payment systems in the US, but we see a long road ahead before Isis gives Google Wallet some jitters -- there's legions of banks, cities and stores needed before Isis is widespread, and we're not counting on that ever-elusive universal hardware support.Continue reading Isis' NFC payments go live in Austin and Salt Lake City: 3 carriers, 9 phones, 1 long way to go (video)Filed under: Cellphones, Mobile, Samsung, HTC, Verizon, AT&T, T-MobileIsis' NFC payments go live in Austin and Salt Lake City: 3 carriers, 9 phones, 1 long way to go (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 13:36:00 EDT. The legal battle between major broadcast networks and TV startup Aereo continues to unwind, as Aereo has filed a brief with the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. According to the 84-page briefing filed on October 19, Aereo's position in this case is identical (in every relevant way) to Cablevision's in the mid-2000s, when the cable provider won a case against major broadcast networks after being sued for a cloud-based remote DVR system.

Prepare yourself for thousands of parodies about the product, but this one is just too good not to post. It's slightly NSFW in that suggestive way, but if you work somewhere where you can get in trouble for this, then quit.

Mobile money is a big deal in emerging markets. When a farmer can simply SMS payment for a cow or two people can transact business by swapping airtime, that changes the entire dynamics of an economy. So it's little surprise that some research just out today indicates how big the market is going to be. And it's all done on plain old feature phones. Berg Insight reports that the number of active mobile money users in emerging markets is forecasted to grow from 61 million in 2011 at an annual growth rate of 36 percent to reach 381 million by 2017.

Mozilla understands your plight, digital denizen, and its "Social API" is here to help -- Firefox browser users can beta test Facebook's Messenger functionality right this minute, should they be able to pause for long enough to get it set up. Thankfully, that setup isn't too strenuous, requiring little more than the latest beta version of the Firefox browser and an opt-in to the Social API program. Report: Nissan developing new hybrid tech, could debut in Infiniti CUV
Filed under: Hybrid, Infiniti, NissanNissan sells more pure electric vehicles (EVs) than any other automaker, but the EV market remains tiny. The hybrid market, while also just a small percentage of new vehicles sold, is bigger - and it's a segment where Nissan hasn't really been playing. The Altima Hybrid, for example, was killed off last year. No one really misses it, though, because Nissan is now able to get nearly equivalent fuel efficiency ratings without a battery. There are signs that Nissan is ready to change its tune on gas-electric hybrids, though, and it starts with Infiniti.Automotive News reports that a new Nissan-designed front-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain will likely be introduced in the Infiniti JX three-row crossover "or a similar class vehicle." Then there will be an average of one new hybrid model each year, with a plug-in version of the JX/CUV in 2015. In this way, Nissan's EV advantage could pay dividends as global fuel economy requirements continue to increase. And that's the way that Nissan will have to spin this re-entry into the hybrid market, since CEO Carlos Ghosn said in 2009 that Nissan was, "not intending to play a leadership role in hybrids. One company already assumed leadership in the technology. We want leadership on EVs." In Japan, Nissan recently introduced the Serena S Hybrid (shown above), which uses the company's less-powerful "smart and simple" hybrid powertrain. The Serena is Japan's best-selling minivan and the new gas-electric version gets around 36 miles per gallon (on Japan's lenient test cycle). That's about a 10-percent improvement over the non-hybrid model, AN reports, and a Nissan exec tells the industry paper that the company's target is to get up to a 30-percent improvement whenever a model receives its new hybrid powertrain.Nissan developing new hybrid tech, could debut in Infiniti CUV originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 11:35:00 EST. Orange begins first HD Voice calls between countries, decides clarity knows no borders
Orange was one of the vanguards of high-quality cellphone calls, having kicked off HD Voice with a Moldovian launch back in 2009. The premium chatter has always stopped at the border, however -- even two Orange customers couldn't see the improvement if they were in different countries. The carrier is bridging that gap with claims that it's the first to support improved voice on the international level: starting today, Moldovans and Romanians on Orange can give each other a ring and expect the extra-smooth calling they're used to from local conversations. We don't yet know if and when other countries will hop on the bandwagon. We've reached out, but it's possible that any upgraded links between other countries will come only from case-by-case negotiations. Those in Bucharest might want to track down any relatives in Chișinău for a quick chat in the meantime.Continue reading Orange begins first HD Voice calls between countries, decides clarity knows no bordersFiled under: Cellphones, Wireless, MobileOrange begins first HD Voice calls between countries, decides clarity knows no borders originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 11:40:00 EDT. Being the founder of Microsoft certainly has its advantages, as well as its downsides. Case in point: the video interview Microsoft released this morning, starring none other than Bill Gates himself talking about the world of Windows 8. On the positive side, Gates reveals he's already got his own soon-to-be-released Microsoft Surface RT -- he calls it "an unbelievably great product," unsurprisingly -- with a black keyboard. On the less than positive side, despite being out of the CEO seat at the company, Gates still has to do interviews like the one found after the break. You'd think he could just get Ballmer to put on his old Crazy Eddie's impersonation! We've dropped that notorious video after the break as well, for comparison sake.Continue reading Bill Gates already has a Surface and you don't (video)Filed under: Desktops, Tablets, Software, MicrosoftBill Gates already has a Surface and you don't (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 10:39:00 EDT. His teammate Eric Bostrom followed closely behind and looked similarly strong, until his Empulse RR was suddenly struck by an electronic gremlin while going through the chicane on the first lap of the five-lap, 15.55-mile race. The bike dramatically slowed, allowing Münch's Matthias Himmelmann to move up into second place. Although the German team had been a few seconds behind Brammo all weekend, the TTE-2 performed perfectly every time it took to the track, suffering none of the worrying glitches experienced by both Brammo racers in qualifying. Happily, Bostrum's ride recovered its mojo early into its second lap, and was soon hitting the same high-performance heights as the race leader. It wasn't enough, however, to catch the reliable Münch machine, leaving Brammo to settle for the top and bottom spots on the podium.Scroll down for more, including a pair of awesome videos from Brammo telling the story of the weekend, with lots of footage from the race itself.Continue reading Steve Atlas brings Brammo its first TTXGP World Championship win [w/video]Steve Atlas brings Brammo its first TTXGP World Championship win [w/video] originally appeared on Autoblog Green on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 09:56:00 EST. Samsung Galaxy Premier rumor gathers steam with leaked GLBenchmark results
When we first heard of a rumored Samsung Galaxy Premier handset that might be a Nexus device, we had our doubts, especially when we saw TouchWiz adorning the alleged leaked image from Mobile Geeks. Now, GLBenchmark is also giving the idea of a new model more credence, as it briefly showed a possible GT-I9260 model packing a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display, dual 1.5GHz processor and 8-megapixel camera. The page has since been pulled, but a screen cap of the benchmark (after the break) shows PowerVR SGX 544 graphics on the device along with middle-of-the-road scores, though all that would be on a pre-production handset without final software, if it's accurate. Whether such a device would come along at a Google event or one of Samsung's shindigs remains to be seen, but its very existence should be taken with a boulder-sized chunk of salt.Continue reading Samsung Galaxy Premier rumor gathers steam with leaked GLBenchmark resultsFiled under: Cellphones, Mobile, SamsungSamsung Galaxy Premier rumor gathers steam with leaked GLBenchmark results originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Oct 2012 10:01:00 EDT.
