| Razer CEO wants annual Blade laptop refreshes, isn't worried about price complaints Posted: 01 Oct 2012 02:48 PM PDT Razer CEO wants annual Blade laptop refreshes, isn't worried about price complaints ![]() Razer CEO wants annual Blade laptop refreshes, isn't worried about price complaints Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan is charismatic, clearly very smart and passionate -- not a bad combination considering he's the face and voice of a major international hardware manufacturer. Razer's latest, the second-generation Blade gaming laptop, launches this week for the whopping price of $2,500, and we spoke with Min-Liang about just that. "This," he said, referencing the second-generation Blade's new, slimmer power brick, "costs seven times this," he added, pointing to the last model's larger external power supply. "Do we have to do this? Probably not." And that's emblematic of Razer's whole approach to the Razer Blade, as a line of gaming computers. Expensive? Yes, very. But significantly nicer and more detailed that its less expensive competition? Also yes. Also very. As our own Sean Buckley put it in our review of their latest gaming laptop, "the Blade is a gorgeous machine." It's true -- at just 0.88 inches tall and 6.6 pounds, the new Blade is remarkably thin and light for a 17-inch laptop with enough juice under the hood to sate even the most spec-obsessed of PC gamers. But are enough gamers out there willing to trade a lower price tag for a better-looking machine? Razer and its CEO certainly think so, and they've got numbers from the first, more expensive Blade to prove it. "The original Blade was at $2,799. Back then, it was pricey, but we've been surprised at the amount of demand for that. We thought we were gonna sell out in 30 days -- we had 30 days' stock. But we sold out in 30 minutes for the first batch," he said. And, as far as pre-order numbers go for the second version, Min-Liang's confident they mean good things for the future of the Blade. "We're getting hammered with the pre-orders for the new Razer Blade. Right now, we'll be able to ship most of the orders by September 30, fingers crossed. But we're trying to bring in as many units as possible," he excitedly explained. Min-Liang isn't too worried about offending first-gen buyers, either -- the first Razer Blade launched in early 2012 for just shy of $2,800. Less than 10 months later, the second-gen Blade is launching for $300 less with a significantly upgraded graphics card. Sure, first-gen adopters get a $500 discount on the new Blade, but the sting of early adoption is especially rough in such an instance.Gallery: Razer Blade 2 hands-onContinue reading Razer CEO wants annual Blade laptop refreshes, isn't worried about price complaintsFiled under: Gaming, LaptopsRazer CEO wants annual Blade laptop refreshes, isn't worried about price complaints originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 17:29:00 EDT. The short teaser itself doesn't reveal any details we weren't aware of, with the Taiwanese outfit placing focus on the device's variety of color assortments, seamless integration with Skype, the track selection from Xbox Music and, of course, that built-in Beats Audio technology. Unfortunately, there's no mention of an exact release date anywhere to be found in the video, although this shouldn't come as a surprise given the fact we're still waiting for Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 launch to become officially official. Regardless, head on past the break to see what HTC has in store for you.Continue reading HTC teases Windows Phone 8X in promo video, wants you to look no furtherFiled under: Cellphones, Software, Mobile, Microsoft, HTCHTC teases Windows Phone 8X in promo video, wants you to look no further originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 17:09:00 EDT. In this case, the Indianapolis-based company is making its presence felt at Purdue University, about 65 miles away. EnerDel is giving the university's College of Technology a collection of lithium-ion battery cells and research data worth about $263,000. The gift complements the $4.7 million grant that the university and Ivy Tech Community College got from the U.S. Department of Energy to advance training geared towards the electric-energy industry. Earlier this month, EnerDel CEO David Roberts said the struggling company was trying to rebuild by lessening its dependence on electric vehicles and putting more emphasis on batteries geared towards grid and home energy storage as well as medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. That said, in July, EnerDel won a second contract to make lithium-ion batteries for the all-electric version of the Volvo C30. EnerDel won its first contract with Volvo three years ago. EnerDel's parent Ener1 declared bankruptcy in January, about seven months after Norwegian EV maker Think, in which Ener1 was an investor, did the same. EnerDel restructured in March after Ener1 received $86 million in new equity and debt-holder agreements. Check out the press release on the Purdue gift below.Continue reading EnerDel still in battery business, now working with Purdue on li-ion researchEnerDel still in battery business, now working with Purdue on li-ion research originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 16:10:00 EST. Posted: 01 Oct 2012 01:41 PM PDT Facebook outlines its ad targeting strategy on one handy page, presents a complex privacy picture ![]() Facebook outlines its ad targeting strategy on one handy page, presents a complex privacy picture To say that Facebook has to tread lightly around privacy issues is an understatement, especially with a targeted ad push underway. Rather than navigate that minefield once more, the social network hopes to skip it entirely by posting an overview of how the ad system tracks habits while retaining our anonymity. For the most part, Facebook walks the fine line carefully. Its Facebook Exchange auction system relies on a unique, untraceable browser ID to target ads to specific people without ever getting their identity; both a mechanism targeting ads beyond Facebook and a Datalogix deal to track the ad conversion rate use anonymous e-mail address hashes that keep advertisers happy without making the addresses readable to prying eyes. The initiative sounds like it's on the right course, although there's caveats at work. Opting out of any Facebook Exchange ads requires tracking down individual ad providers, which isn't likely to result in many of us leaving the ad revenue stream. Likewise, those who'd object even to the completely anonymous ad profiling don't have a say in the matter. With those concerns in mind, it's doubtful there will be many significant objections in the future -- Facebook knows its advertising money train can only keep churning if its members are comfortable enough to come along for the ride.Filed under: InternetFacebook outlines its ad targeting strategy on one handy page, presents a complex privacy picture originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 16:16:00 EDT. According to AllThingsD, AOL and YouTube have inked a deal that will bring "branded channels" with content from sites such as Huffington Post, TechCrunch, Moviefone and even clips from the recently launched HuffPost Live over to the video streaming platform. And while AOL did previously offer some tidbits on YouTube, this move is expected to better solidify and highlight the vid work from properties like the ones mentioned above -- which, of course, could only be accomplished by reaching a new "everyone wins" type of revenue sharing agreement. We all know about the central issue surrounding iOS 6. For the suits and ties among us, however, there's a potentially more glaring problem with Exchange support. Some users quick to upgrade to Apple's latest mobile OS report losing automatic push delivery of their email, requiring that they check for themselves to get any fresh messages. The issue isn't carrier- or device-specific, and attempts to reboot, reconfigure or restore devices are at best temporary fixes: what flows smoothly at first runs dry several hours later. Apple technicians are aware that the flaw exists, but it's tough to know if and when engineers will have a fix -- the company typically waits until it has a solution in hand before it goes on the record. We've reached out to Apple for a possible comment all the same. In the meantime, let us know if your Exchange access (or push data as a whole) is going awry. It's phasing out sales of all lighting that isn't LED-based by 2016, making it the first major home furnishing shop with a US presence to entirely banish less efficient illumination. Ikea also wants to take advantage of its economies of scale with the "lowest price on the market" for LEDs, which could shake up an industry where anything beyond incandescent technology usually carries a premium. We'll still have some time to wait for the full switch, but the company at least plans to practice what it preaches by replacing over a million store lights with LEDs -- so those of us with no light replacement plans can still feel as green as the Beddinge HÃ¥vet we're taking home. It founded Slate Magazine way back in 1996 as part of its then still-nascent MSN website, and it partnered with NBC that same year on the MSNBC cable news network. While it's since sold off both Slate and its stake in MSNBC, it looks like the company is now taking another big swing at producing its own news operation. As Reuters reports, Microsoft is making "big, multi-million dollar investment" to create what is being described as a "decent-sized media operation," one that will be a part of the new-look MSN that the company has also announced today. Details remain light beyond that, but Reuters says the new MSN will still "chiefly aggregate news" from traditional sources like Reuters and the AP in addition to producing its own content. As for that new MSN itself, it's unsurprisingly built with tablets (and Windows 8, specifically) in mind, with a design that's tailored for full-screen use and touch input. It's launch wil coincide with Windows 8's debut on October 26th, but you can get an early look at the link below and in the video after the break.Continue reading Microsoft set to get back in the news business with relaunched MSNFiled under: InternetMicrosoft set to get back in the news business with relaunched MSN originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 12:49:00 EDT. | Linux 3.6 kernel released with 'hybrid sleep' capability, experimental file system Posted: 01 Oct 2012 09:40 AM PDT Linux 3.6 kernel released with 'hybrid sleep' capability, experimental file system ![]() Linux 3.6 kernel released with 'hybrid sleep' capability, experimental file system The last couple of Linux kernel updates have been a bit of a circus, with Android merging in the 3.3 ring and graphics integration on a (noisy) 3.4 center stage. Version 3.6 of the open source kernel has less flashy, more serene features this time, with hybrid standby, a new file system and other esoteric networking and architectural features befalling the penguin. That sleep mode, which caches the RAM contents to a disk to prevent data loss, has been available for a while now on Windows and Mac machines and will be especially handy on Linux laptops. The so-called Btrfs file system has also been added (albeit in a developmental mode) along with Google's experimental TCP Fast Open extension, additional network drivers, more virtualisation options and additional processor support. Sleepwalk to the source for the complete changelog.Filed under: SoftwareLinux 3.6 kernel released with 'hybrid sleep' capability, experimental file system originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 01 Oct 2012 12:13:00 EDT.
