'Ignore' the quick-charge meter in the Nissan Leaf, EV advocate says Posted: 09 Sep 2012 02:28 PM PDT 'Ignore' the quick-charge meter in the Nissan Leaf, EV advocate says ![]() 'Ignore' the quick-charge meter in the Nissan Leaf, EV advocate says Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Green Culture, Nissan A lot of science goes into electric cars, but when it comes to gauging battery-charge percentage, there may be a little more art involved. In this case, the DC quick-charge stations that are currently being installed near highways along the U.S. West Coast - and other locations - can't communicate with precision with electric vehicles to calculate the correct state of charge (SOC) percentages and will likely overstate the true amount of charge in the EV, according to one electric-vehicle advocate. And that could cause drivers to miscalculate their cars' available range and, well, come up short. Tom Saxton, vice president of Plug In America, wrote on his blog about his experience quick-charging his Nissan Leaf at an AeroVironment DC Quick Charge station in Washington State. Saxton said that, charging at stations like the one he used don't know exactly how much energy is in the car's pack and so can display an almost 100-percent charge, but the true amount of energy in the pack can be closer to 80 percent. For a car like the Leaf with an EPA-rated 73-mile single-charge range, that could leave a driver about 15 miles short of his or her intended location. Part of the issue is that when using a fast charger, a Leaf will only "fill up" to an 80 percent charge after starting from less than a 50-percent charge. This means that what appears "full" on the station doesn't mean "full" in the car, and there's no way to get the station to figure out what the actual situation is. The solution? "Ignore what the station shows" and use the EV's on-board indicator to properly gauge the charge, Saxton writes.'Ignore' the quick-charge meter in the Nissan Leaf, EV advocate says originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 09 Sep 2012 17:24:00 EST. Aiding rumors, for instance, are a collection of screenshots showing the phone running on both Verizon and Ma Bell's networks. A BreifMobile source says that the AT&T version of the oversized handset is being tested, as are T-Mobile, Bell Canada and Sprint variations. The AT&T version is said to be a dead ringer for the international model, retaining its quad-core Exynos processor while snubbing the network's branding. Much like Sammy itself, the source didn't have much to say about availability -- just "soon." Can't wait? Sony RX1 camera leaks with full-frame sensor in compact body, laws of physics sl... Posted: 09 Sep 2012 11:12 AM PDT Sony RX1 camera leaks with full-frame sensor in compact body, laws of physics slightly bent ![]() Sony RX1 camera leaks with full-frame sensor in compact body, laws of physics slightly bent Here's something you probably didn't expect: a compact Sony camera with a full-frame sensor. While Photoprice.ca was uncovering a treasure trove of leaked press shots that include the Alpha A99 and NEX-6, it also came across images of the RX1, whose body looks borderline pocketable yet stuffs in the same kind of sensor (and likely image quality) you'd normally reserve for pro-grade models. Several extra details reveal themselves right from the start. The RX1 is carrying a 35mm, f/2.0 lens with no apparent button to detach the lens -- the included glass is probably as good as it'll get. However, the RX1 is most definitely tuned for experienced shooters, with a toggle for macro focusing as well as dedicated controls for aperture and exposure compensation. We're also liking that there's a pop-up flash, a standard hot shoe for accessories and three custom settings on the mode dial. The slip doesn't include mention of a release date or a price, but talk during the A99 slip mentioned a September 12th unveiling that wouldn't shock us if it included multiple cameras -- and we would be equally unsurprised if the RX1 carried the same high price commonly associated with other full-frame bodies.Filed under: CamerasSony RX1 camera leaks with full-frame sensor in compact body, laws of physics slightly bent originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 09 Sep 2012 13:44:00 EDT. VMK preps Africa-designed Elikia smartphone with $170 price, fast track for apps Posted: 09 Sep 2012 10:04 AM PDT VMK preps Africa-designed Elikia smartphone with $170 price, fast track for apps ![]() VMK preps Africa-designed Elikia smartphone with $170 price, fast track for apps Congo-based VMK has been blazing a trail for mobile devices in Africa: its Way-C tablet proved that the continent could go its own way without leaning on Asia or Europe. The company promised several months ago to address the same gap with smartphones, and the result is here in the form of the Elikia ("Hope"). The hardware won't shake the cellular world's foundations with its 3.5-inch (and 480 x 320) display, 512MB of RAM, a 650MHz processor and both 5-megapixel rear as well as front VGA cameras, but that's not the point -- at $170 US off-contract, it's much more within the reach of Congo residents, and it even uses the unofficial Holo Launcher to bring a taste of Android 4.0 to what's really Android 2.3 underneath. There's also a minor revolution in app purchasing. As Google Play won't take Congo's credit cards, VMK has its own app store and prepaid gift cards to give the country a similar experience. You'll have to sign on to local carriers Airtel, MTN or Warid to use an Elikia in the near future, but we're hoping the phone expands its reach and levels the playing field. Man-made technology is great, but Mother Nature is the greatest inventor of them all -- and scientists are discovering new ways to take advantage of the tools found in nature. Take, for example, a team of researchers from Vanderbilt University who developed a solar cell using the photosynthetic protein found in spinach. In New York, Scape Studio has proposed to use the oyster's natural cleaning ability to help clean up the contaminated waters of the Gowanus Canal. The firm has received funding to create Oyster-tecture, an oyster park at the mouth of the canal where millions of mollusks will "eat" toxins. Meanwhile, the US Forest Service has been deriving cellulose nanocrystals from wood pulp extract to create a material that's stronger than Kevlar and carbon fiber.Continue reading Inhabitat's Week in Green: fluorescent bulb moon, fuel-efficient supersonic jet and a toxin-eating oyster parkFiled under: Misc, ScienceInhabitat's Week in Green: fluorescent bulb moon, fuel-efficient supersonic jet and a toxin-eating oyster park originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 09 Sep 2012 10:30:00 EDT. EV dealer works for seven years to bring electric cars to Cayman Islands Posted: 09 Sep 2012 06:18 AM PDT EV dealer works for seven years to bring electric cars to Cayman Islands ![]() EV dealer works for seven years to bring electric cars to Cayman Islands Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy It turns out it is easier place to make offshore investments in the Cayman Islands than it is to buy or sell electric vehicles there. Getting electric vehicles to the Cayman Islands has been a real challenge for John Felder, president of Cayman Automotive, a dealership that has made it a mission to sell EVs like the Wheego LiFe, Think City, and Amp plug-in conversions. Felder was thrilled to see the first Caribbean International Electric Show launch on August 30 at the Cayman Motor Museum in West Bay on Grand Cayman. Just in time, too, since regulators were just then approving EVs to be registered in the Cayman Islands. Felder had been pushing for seven years (!) for Cayman to go electric. In June of this year, Felder attempted to register an EV at the Department of Vehicles and Licensing, but was unable to do so because the department had safety concerns. According to Deputy Premier Julia O'Connor-Connolly, "the registration and licensing of vehicles was an intricate process and required extensive research on many issues." Amp Electric Vehicles has had a similar bureaucratic problem. A bill allowing EVs on the islands was signed by the governor last November, but it has taken a while for the regulatory structure to be put in place. In March, Amp signed a memorandum of understanding with U-Go Stations Cayman to bring its converted all-electric Mercedes-Benz ML to the Caribbean Islands, but found out that the law hadn't been clearly implemented yet. Last year, Feldman received government approval for a Chevy Volt, and the ministry issued a statement that the new law's regulations "will be brought into effect very shortly." It did take a while, but it looks like Cayman Island residents will finally be able to drive off the dealer lot and get their electric cars legally registered.EV dealer works for seven years to bring electric cars to Cayman Islands originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 09 Sep 2012 09:03:00 EST. FBI to roll out $1 billion public facial recognition system in 2014, will be on... That's when the FBI is gearing up for a nationwide launch of a $1 billion project designed to identify people of interest, according to the New Scientist. Dubbed the Next Generation Identification (NGI) program, the high-tech endeavor uses biometric data such as DNA analysis, iris scans and voice identification to track down folks with a criminal history. The FBI also plans to take NGI on the road literally by using public cameras to pick faces from the crowd and cross check them with its national repository of images. Let's just say this facial technology isn't going to be used for lighthearted Japanese vocaloid hijinks or unlocking your electronic device. The use and scope of NGI, which kicked off a pilot program in February, will likely be questioned not just by black helicopter watchers but privacy advocates as well. Facial recognition has certainly been a touchy issue in privacy circles -- something Facebook learned firsthand in Germany. Meanwhile, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is already raising concerns about innocent civilians being mixed up or included in the database. Naturally, the FBI claims that the NGI program is in compliance with the U.S. Privacy Act. On the positive side, at least they didn't name it the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System.Filed under: MiscFBI to roll out $1 billion public facial recognition system in 2014, will be on to your evildoing everywhere originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 09 Sep 2012 08:46:00 EDT. The shooter is otherwise identical to the original Cinema Camera, with a 2.5k, sub-MFT sensor; CinemaDNG RAW, ProRes and DNxHD capture formats; built-in SSD; capacitive touchscreen; and an included copy of DaVinci Resolve color correction software. That means cineasts already on board that format will have another mount for their glass, and MFT's mirrorless aspect will also permit other lens formats, like PL or Nikon, to be added with third party adapters. So, if the relatively low price, claimed 13 stop dynamic range, higher-than-HD resolution and new mount is enough to push your "start" button, check the PR for the entire skinny.Continue reading Blackmagic launches Cinema Camera MFT with Micro Four Thirds mount, sans autofocus, for $3KFiled under: Cameras, HDBlackmagic launches Cinema Camera MFT with Micro Four Thirds mount, sans autofocus, for $3K originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 09 Sep 2012 06:11:00 EDT. A fan-devised project to restore the Enterprise-D bridge from Star Trek: The Experience is now actively raising cash on Indiegogo with a newly estimated $240,000 target needed to make the dream real. Crowdfunding brings the obligatory perks for larger donations, although they take on a progressively nerdy bent once you get past the t-shirts. It peaks at getting replicas of Captain Kirk's original chair or an LCARS terminal, and you can even get a romantic evening on the deck with "complete privacy until the next morning" -- wink, wink. Outlandish? Maybe, but the project is getting official sponsors and has a shorter-term plan to get Captain Picard's chair ready for display by October. The whole bridge should be ready by late 2013. If you'd wished Paramount had preserved this piece of The Next Generation history for the ages, you now have your solution.Filed under: MiscEnterprise-D restoration fundraiser goes live: your chance to revive a slice of Star Trek is here originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 09 Sep 2012 04:40:00 EDT. Kaleidescape teases movie download store; brings Rotten Tomatoes, Leonard Maltin... Posted: 09 Sep 2012 12:26 AM PDT Kaleidescape teases movie download store; brings Rotten Tomatoes, Leonard Maltin to its servers ![]() Kaleidescape teases movie download store; brings Rotten Tomatoes, Leonard Maltin to its servers Last year at CEDIA we were introduced to Kaleidescape's iPad control app, and this year its back and enhanced with the addition of movie ratings from Rotten Tomatoes, and content rating info from Common Sense Media. Rotten Tomatoes can help viewers tell if a particular flick in their collection is any good, while Common Sense Media is built around detailed breakdowns of what potentially objectionable content is in each title so parents can decide what their children are ready to see. Both should reach end users with the free app by the end of this year. Another tweak it's adding to its movie servers is the Leonard Maltin Recommends Collection. It's a pack of movies updated quarterly (the 17-disc Blu-ray collection is available for the low, low price of $445) that the respected film critic feels are unappreciated greats, to which he adds his own thoughts, anecdotes and behind the scenes info. A more ambitious development however, is the Kaleidescape Download Store the company was giving an "early sneak preview" of behind closed doors. While its claim to fame has always been disc servers that store user's movies, making them accessible with as little physical media interaction as possible (and antagonizing the MPAA) its next step is a full digital media distribution service, potentially tied into UltraViolet. There's not a lot in the way of specifics, but it will be interesting to see how Kaleidescape and Hollywood get along when it comes to selling downloadable content compared to the old wars of the past, whenever the new service actually arrives for its high-end customers.Continue reading Kaleidescape teases movie download store; brings Rotten Tomatoes, Leonard Maltin to its serversFiled under: Home Entertainment, HDKaleidescape teases movie download store; brings Rotten Tomatoes, Leonard Maltin to its servers originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 09 Sep 2012 03:11:00 EDT. Sony Alpha A99 poses for someone else's camera, no optical viewfinder in sight Posted: 08 Sep 2012 05:17 PM PDT Sony Alpha A99 poses for someone else's camera, no optical viewfinder in sight ![]() Sony Alpha A99 poses for someone else's camera, no optical viewfinder in sight Technical details of Sony's rumored Alpha A99 have been overflowing. The actual camera, however, has been elusive until now. A press photo just spotted on Xitek (and passed along to Sony Alpha Rumors) is believed to be authentic and speaks volumes about Sony's pro camera strategy: as shown, there's no obvious space for an optical viewfinder, hinting that the company's full-frame shooter is going with an OLED-based electronic eyepiece like that of its crop-frame A77 precursor. The image doesn't show much more than that and a conspicuous orange ring to remind us that we're gazing upon an Alpha, but it's tough to ignore that more compact (and hopefully lighter) body. Whatever the cosmetics are like, rumors now assert that the 24.3-megapixel, translucent-mirrored A99's early September release has been locked down to September 12th; if that's true, it may give photographers as much reason to be happy that day as phone buyers.Filed under: CamerasSony Alpha A99 poses for someone else's camera, no optical viewfinder in sight originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 08 Sep 2012 20:08:00 EDT. We couldn't get much of a feel for it on the show floor with the wide open spaces and noise, but according to Onkyo, its six full-range drivers and downward-firing subwoofer combine to send sound in all directions, resulting in a stereo experience no matter where the listener is seated in smaller rooms. There's more details on that, as well as a few other mini audio systems and a new amp in the gallery and press releases after the break. One other development we noted was the Roku Streaming Stick-ready branding popping up on Onkyo receivers since its partnership was officially revealed, and there was even a dongle conspicuously front mounted right there in the booth.
