To compete with offerings from GoPro, Sony and our most recent favorite, the Contour+2, the GC-A1 brings its "Quad Proof" housing that makes it waterproof (to 5M) and shockproof (for falls of up to 2M), dustproof and freeze-proof, as well as built-in WiFi, integrated microphone, image stabilization and a 1.5-inch LCD on the side. It can use WiFi to make a video link with nearby Android or iOS devices as well as PCs so the wearer can check where the camera is pointing, and even stream video directly to Ustream via a hotspot, no PC necessary. For the $349 asking price a goggle mount, flexible mount, two lens protection covers, USB cable and a single battery are included. We didn't have a motocross track or snowmobile handy on the show floor, but in-hand it felt every bit the ruggedized, compact device that its advertised to be and the LCD was decently viewable. Check out a few more pics of it in our gallery below and some sample footage in the video embedded after the break. Well, you'd be excused for never having heard of it, but given that it's just popped up at the FCC, you might be getting to know it soon. Typically, details are sparse, but a bit of sniffing around suggests that this will be rolling with Verizon friendly LTE (which might also explain the "VW" in the product name). There's mention of NFC too, along with the obligatory WiFi and Bluetooth furnishings. The handset is rumored to also be touting a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 and a 720p HD display, which sounds perfectly believable to us. But until this breaks cover, be it as the ADR930LVW, or codename Premia V -- or indeed as anything else -- we'll just have to wait and see.Filed under: Cellphones, MobilePantech ADR930LVW knocks on the FCC's door, brings Verizon LTE along for the ride originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 16:44:00 EDT. How so? It's simple, really: these aren't going to be known for their Bluetooth capabilities, oddly-shaped design or even being portable. Instead, Opalum's hoping to take the living room by surprise with its "floating" aesthetics and patented Actisonic and Actiline digital audio tech -- which, apparently, has taken decades of academic research to accomplish and, in the end, offers reverse filtering algorithms alongside state-of-the-art aluminum drivers that allow the Flow 1010 to have "control of the air movement." Now don't let the minimalist looks fool you into thinking these will come cheap, as the starting price point is a whopping £1,649 (around $2,700) -- though, if it makes it any better, that does take into account an included "hub" and an RF touch remote. Be sure to read over the PR below, where you can find out where's the nearest place to snag a set of Flow 1010 speakers for yourself.Continue reading Opalum's Flow 1010 TV speakers sport 'minimalist floating' design, get priced at £1,649Filed under: Home Entertainment, Peripherals, HDOpalum's Flow 1010 TV speakers sport 'minimalist floating' design, get priced at £1,649 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 16:22:00 EDT. Greenpeace pickets VW Golf premiere in Berlin Posted: 07 Sep 2012 01:09 PM PDT Greenpeace pickets VW Golf premiere in Berlin ![]() Greenpeace pickets VW Golf premiere in Berlin Filed under: Green Culture, MPG, Volkswagen No cute little Ewoks with this campaign. Last year, Greenpeace used the Star Wars-themed ad for the Volkswagen Passat to form its own "Dark Side" campaign. The one criticized Europe's biggest automaker for not doing enough to cut automobile greenhouse gas emissions, and Greenpeace was at it again this week. Members of the environmental group picketed the premiere of Volkswagen's seventh-generation Golf at Berlin's New National Gallery earlier this week, according to Reuters. About 50 protestors were present and Greenpeace's Wolfgang Lohbeck said VW was aiming low with a fuel economy rating of about 48 miles per gallon (on the more lenient European driving cycle). Lohbeck says VW has the technology to shoot for more like 75 mpg, and called the Golf's fuel economy results "lame." Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn referred to the protesters as a "small band" and defended the car's fuel economy and performance. VW says the new Golf incarnation is about 220 pounds lighter because of more use of high-strength steel but will have the same $21,300 base price in Europe as the outgoing version. Greenpeace first used Star Wars stormtroopers to attack VW for what it said were insufficient efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and updated its attack last month on the Greenpeace blog.Greenpeace pickets VW Golf premiere in Berlin originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 16:02:00 EST. If you relish the irony, Best Buy will gladly let you reserve Amazon's $69 Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite, upgraded Kindle Fire and both sizes of the Kindle Fire HD (including the LTE model) at both regular locations and Best Buy Mobile. The retailer isn't as specific with its in-stock dates as Amazon: beyond the $69 Kindle's September 14th date, we're only promised a generic October release for the Paperwhite and 7-inch Kindle Fires, while the 8.9-inch tablets will be available "before Christmas." Not the quickest path to getting a new Kindle in your hands, then, but it may be the best way to get a hands-on before clinching the deal.Continue reading Best Buy takes 2012 Amazon Kindle pre-orders for those that hate online shopping, appreciate ironyFiled under: TabletsBest Buy takes 2012 Amazon Kindle pre-orders for those that hate online shopping, appreciate irony originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 16:02:00 EDT. What do you do after you spend years working on very serious, infrastructure problems supporting Gmail and literally hundreds of millions of users globally? You build a drawing app. Or at least that's what Gabor Cselle did after he stopped being an Android and Gmail product manager, following an acquisition into Google two years ago. He and co-founder Jeremy Orlow had been working on Gmail and Chrome respectively. "We just wanted to do something fun. Something that would make our friends smile and feel really lightweight," Cselle said. "This is the simplest idea that we could come up with. We literally were just like: What is something that will delight people?" So they created DrawChat. |

After 100 yards of driving, the rover extended its 7-foot limb, and will now spend six to ten days checking its predetermined positions and range of motion. That will ensure the appendage is ready after surviving the chilly vaccuum of space and subsequent setdown, and will let its minders see how it functions in the unfamiliar Martian gravity and temperatures. The JPL scientists in charge of the six-wheeler will also peep the Mars Hand Lens Imager and made-in-Canada Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer to warrant that they're up for all the geology to come. If all goes well, the rover will start scooping, drilling and analyzing in earnest when it hits Glenelg, then Mount Sharp -- so, we'd limber up first before tackling all that, too.Filed under: Misc, ScienceCuriosity rover starts light robotic arm workout in preparation for scientific main event originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 15:44:00 EDT. It's now turn for the big boys to play. Updated versions of the 2big Quadra and 4big Quadra (not yet shown here) use the faster port to reach the potential of their high-capacity RAID arrays, peaking at either 210MB/s for the dual-drive 2big and 245MB/s for its quad-drive cousin. We're not seeing a fundamental shakeup of the design apart from the higher speeds, although that's not necessarily a problem given the FireWire 800 to catch legacy users and hot-swappable bays for future upgrades. Video editors and other storage mavens should just prepare themselves to pony up. The upgraded Quadra models will start at respective $499 (4TB) and $1,099 (8TB) prices when they ship in October, and they're only poised to get more expensive when LaCie sets the costs for the higher-end 6TB and 12TB models.Continue reading LaCie 2big, 4big Quadra drives hop the USB 3.0 bandwagon, give Macs 12TB of speedy storageFiled under: StorageLaCie 2big, 4big Quadra drives hop the USB 3.0 bandwagon, give Macs 12TB of speedy storage originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 15:20:00 EDT. Siri, Why Are You Having Trouble Connecting? Posted: 07 Sep 2012 01:09 PM PDT Siri, Why Are You Having Trouble Connecting? ![]() Siri, Why Are You Having Trouble Connecting? It would appear that Siri is down. We've tested five iPhone 4S models, all of which are running iOS 5.1. One of the iPhones in the TechCrunch office is running iOS 6, and Siri seems to be working fine on the newer OS. Twitter confirms, and there are some pretty funny tweets coming out of this very serious crisis. To be fair, Siri doesn't work that well anyway, even when she's not down. There's a lot of confusion when using unusual names, and without WiFi there's a pretty good chance you won't get an answer at all. Perhaps, iOS 6 will fix that. |
HTC One S family hits China sporting different threads, identical specs Posted: 07 Sep 2012 01:09 PM PDT HTC One S family hits China sporting different threads, identical specs ![]() HTC One S family hits China sporting different threads, identical specs HTC has delivered smartphone triplets to the Chinese market: the HTC One ST, SC and SU -- and while the devices have identical guts (except for network gear), each has its own housing, carrier and color scheme. All three carry 4.3-inch 800 x 480 screens, dual-core 1GHz processors, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, a 5-megapixel camera with 5 fps continuous shooting, Beats audio, dual-sim / dual standby capability and Android 4.0 with HTC sense 4. But the HTC One ST, destined for China Mobile, brings a curvier 9.2mm thick design and choice of three colors, including a now passé red. The One SC for China Telecom has a squarish, 8.9mm asymmetric two-tone design, and three color choices as well, including a burnt orange for the more fashion forward. Finally there's China Unicom's HTC One SU, with a similar body to its SC counterpart, but featuring powder blue as an accent color. No pricing has been announced yet for the entry-level spec'd models, but consumers there may want to check their wardrobes before picking up one of the bolder models. Lada introduces new all-electric vehicle in Russia Posted: 07 Sep 2012 12:05 PM PDT Lada introduces new all-electric vehicle in Russia ![]() Lada introduces new all-electric vehicle in Russia Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Renault, Europe/EU, Asia In 1976, Renault famously (or some would say infamously) introduced Le Car. Now, the French automaker is playing a major role in the unveiling of El Lada. In this case, Renault and sister company Nissan are 50 percent owners of Lada, which is pitching what will be the first Russian-produced battery-electric vehicle, according to Technologic Vehicles. El Lada, shown below in a five-plus-minute video released by Lada part-owner Avtovaz, is said to have a 60-kilowatt (80-horsepower) electric motor that delivers a top speed of about 80 miles per hour and a single-charge range of about 100 miles. The five-door compact hatchback EV will get its first day-to-day road experience when it's tested by taxis in the city of Stavropol, which is about 100 miles north of the Georgia border in southern Russia. Lada recently stepped up its profile when it recently hired former Mercedes-Benz senior designer and ex-Volvo chief designer Steve Mattin to run the Russian automaker's design operations. It just showed off its Xray concept car at the Moscow Auto Show. The automaker has apparently jumped ahead of Yo Auto, which is owned in part by Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov. That company, which said in late 2010 that it would start producing Russia's first hybrid vehicle by the end of this year, recently backed off that claim and said the car, the Yo Mobile, will not be available until 2015, according to Agence France-Presse.Continue reading Lada introduces new all-electric vehicle in RussiaLada introduces new all-electric vehicle in Russia originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 14:02:00 EST. As it did with its Android and iOS counterparts a few months back, Adobe's now bringing an updated version (10.1, to be exact) of its mobile Reader app to the Windows Phone crowd. Amazon Silk browser on Kindle Fire tracks page visits to generate trends, isn't... Posted: 07 Sep 2012 12:05 PM PDT Amazon Silk browser on Kindle Fire tracks page visits to generate trends, isn't as spooky as it sounds ![]() Amazon Silk browser on Kindle Fire tracks page visits to generate trends, isn't as spooky as it sounds When you pick up that new Kindle Fire HD this fall, one of the first things you'll notice is an updated version of Amazon's Silk web browser with a Trending Now section. It's a clever trick that takes advantage of Silk's server-based caching to find out what sites are popular among owners. That sounds good on the surface, but it doesn't take much effort to realize that there are privacy concerns already in the air -- Amazon is sharing personal web habits with a wider audience, after all. While the section is unlikely to include any identifying information, there's no immediate sign that tablet owners can keep their behavior private, and that could create some indignation among those who'd prefer to surf in isolation. We've asked Amazon if there will be an opt-out escape hatch and will let you know if there's a definitive answer. In the meantime, we wouldn't necessarily worry. Silk shouldn't be caching your e-mail, and it's only likely to ever show pages that have far more traffic than anything you'd be embarrassed to show to others. As far as we can tell, your secret knitting obsession should be safe.Filed under: Tablets, InternetAmazon Silk browser on Kindle Fire tracks page visits to generate trends, isn't as spooky as it sounds originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 14:33:00 EDT. NextGuide for iPad intends to get you to stop using the grid guide Posted: 07 Sep 2012 12:05 PM PDT NextGuide for iPad intends to get you to stop using the grid guide ![]() NextGuide for iPad intends to get you to stop using the grid guide Believe it or not, most people still start their TV watching routine by hitting the guide button and browsing. After that, they might check to see what's on the DVR, and eventually make their way through the streaming options available on their smart TV or game console. Dijit Media wants to change that with the new NextGuide iPad app which sets out to answer the age old question of "what am I going to watch next?" Essentially this hyper personal guide knows whats on TV, what your friends are watching and lets you easily filter by things like category, Facebook likes or even keywords in the metadata. Discovering content is the key theme here, but integration with other services like Rotten Tomatoes and the ability to schedule recordings on your DVR are also in the cards -- currently scheduling recordings only works with DirecTV, but we're told more are on the way. Although from the same company, NextGuide doesn't work with the Beacon so you'll need to keep using the Dijit remote for the majority of your remote needs, but both products will live on even though Dijit's focus is on NextGuide, for now.Gallery: Dijit NextGuide iPad appContinue reading NextGuide for iPad intends to get you to stop using the grid guideFiled under: Home Entertainment, Tablets, HDNextGuide for iPad intends to get you to stop using the grid guide originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 14:00:00 EDT. Last year, video trailers for apps emerged as one popular for developers (and particularly game developers) to acquire users as Apple cracked down on other methods. Several companies including San Francisco's Flurry, which is also a popular mobile analytics provider, effectively became mobile video ad networks. Now the company is saying that a year later, it's now seeing 100 million completed video ad views for mobile apps in its network. It's also bringing its video ad network to Android. |

As you'll recall, that launch date now sits at sometime in the first quarter of 2013, following some delays, and it's expected than an all-touch device will debut prior to a more traditional keyboard-equipped BlackBerry. The camera-centered behemoth isn't far behind, though, as a handful of users have spotted and grabbed a 113.10.1506 OS update lurking on Nokia's servers before it was abruptly yanked. While Nokia hasn't confirmed details of the upgrade, those few who tried the download can vouch that it really is Belle FP2, or Belle Refresh. As such, it's bringing an overhauled keyboard with text prediction, new versions of the browser and music player apps, fresh widgets and no doubt a few under-the-radar bug fixes. It's hard to know if the update is final code, so we'd advise caution before loading up any unofficial copies you might find -- even so, it's a portentous sign for 808 owners who'd like to have a definitive instance of smartphone-grade Symbian before the platform rides into the sunset.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileSymbian Belle FP2 for Nokia 808 PureView spotted early, pulled quickly originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 12:58:00 EDT. The automotive CEO is, after all, also in charge of the rocket company, which means that he's thinking about a lot more than just ramping up production of the Model S. But he is thinking about that a lot, too. More than you might expect. AutoblogGreen recently got to sit down with Musk at SpaceX for a one-on-one, wide-ranging interview. Musk, comfortable and relaxed in an "Occupy Mars" t-shirt, was forthcoming about most things we asked - but questions about Tesla's upcoming Supercharger network of fast chargers, which can deliver so much more juice per minute than any other plug-in vehicle charger on the market, were deflected, since the company is planning a big announcement at the end of this month or early October - and we got into Tesla's financial situation, why the Model X has those falcon doors and how Daimler saved Tesla. We learned a lot, including that Musk really doesn't like the rear seat access in the Audi Q7. Not one bit. Read the whole interview below.Continue reading In deep with Tesla CEO Elon Musk: Financials, Falcon doors and finding faults in the Model SIn deep with Tesla CEO Elon Musk: Financials, Falcon doors and finding faults in the Model S originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 11:59:00 EST. Posted: 07 Sep 2012 09:50 AM PDT EchoStar HDX-410 set-top box runs native ICS, supports terrestrial broadcasts (hands-on video) ![]() EchoStar HDX-410 set-top box runs native ICS, supports terrestrial broadcasts (hands-on video) You may be familiar with EchoStar's satellite-based (Dish Network) and Sling Media (Slingbox) products, but the company also manufactures set-top boxes for third-party providers, as well as free-to-air services in the UK. It's this last grouping that'll be able to take advantage of the Android-based device we saw today, assuming it does in fact make its way to market. The HDX-410 runs native Ice Cream Sandwich, and is available in two versions -- one supports IP content and local storage exclusively, while a second can also accept terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) programming, letting you play back live TV shows in addition to content from a local server, pulled from the web or stored on attached media or an inserted microSD card. It connects to the web using Ethernet or WiFi, and includes USB ports on both the front and the rear, Bluetooth, HDMI out, digital audio out and a standard-definition connection. It's also paired with a QWERTY keyboard-equipped remote manufactured by Philips with gyroscopic or directional-pad curser control, along with pinch/zoom gesture capability. We had a chance to check out the ICS box at EchoStar's IBC booth today, where the device was running Android 4.0.4 and an early version of the company's hybrid app, which groups "favorited" content alongside terrestrial channels, letting you use the standard channel up/down button to navigate through stored TV shows, IP content or live programming quite seamlessly, as if all of the media was playing from the same source. It's clearly not yet ready for primetime, but the interface was sleek and speedy -- the set-top box performed very well overall. EchoStar reps were unable to confirm whether or not the HDX-410 would be coming to market at all, but they did add that the solution may be made available to third-parties in the future. Basically, you can choose any of the photos on your phone, then apply it to one of the 15 products currently being offered in the app, including T-shirts, messenger bags, and playing cards. For each product, you choose from a number of different designs — some of them feature the photo front-and-center, others are more subtle. |

Posted: 07 Sep 2012 09:50 AM PDT The Engadget Interview: Nokia's Kevin Shields on PureView, floating sensors and the 'missile' that is the Lumia 920 ![]() The Engadget Interview: Nokia's Kevin Shields on PureView, floating sensors and the 'missile' that is the Lumia 920 A conversation with Nokia's Stephen Elop, as we had earlier this week, is quite an experience. He's kind, friendly, charming and obviously extremely passionate about everything Nokia -- but his PR deflector shields are always full-forward. Ask him a challenging question and you'll be greeted with a very gentle response that sounds like an answer but is actually just a deftly delivered retooling of some standard PR-friendly message you've probably already heard. Interviewing Nokia SVP Kevin Shields is, as we've seen in the past, a somewhat more... direct experience. Why did Nokia go with a gloss finish on the 920 instead of the matte we loved on the 800 and 900? "Because it's awesome." How durable is the 920? "It's like a missile." How confident is he that wireless charging will take off? "We are all in." Shields was kind enough to give us a few minutes of his time after Nokia's event this week to talk Lumia and to explain just what "PureView" means now that it's been applied to a second phone. Click on through to get educated.Gallery: Nokia Lumia 920Continue reading The Engadget Interview: Nokia's Kevin Shields on PureView, floating sensors and the 'missile' that is the Lumia 920Filed under: Cellphones, Cameras, MobileThe Engadget Interview: Nokia's Kevin Shields on PureView, floating sensors and the 'missile' that is the Lumia 920 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 12:00:00 EDT. 2013 Ford Fusion rated at 25/37 MPG, Hybrid gets 47 MPG Posted: 07 Sep 2012 08:47 AM PDT 2013 Ford Fusion rated at 25/37 MPG, Hybrid gets 47 MPG ![]() 2013 Ford Fusion rated at 25/37 MPG, Hybrid gets 47 MPG The EPA posted fuel economy numbers for the 2013 Ford Fusion in front-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive and hybrid flavors, but they were quickly removed from certain parts of the FuelEconomy.gov website. Car and Driver snagged the numbers before they disappeared, however, and it makes for fine reading. It's a toss-up nowadays as to whether an automatic or manual will get the ultimate economy, but the best numbers among the conventional Fusion powertrains are the 25 city / 37 highway miles per gallon returned by the six-speed-manual-equipped FWD Fusion with the 179-horsepower 1.6-liter EcoBoost motor. Numbers for the six-speed automatic are right behind, at 23 city / 36 highway. Dropping nine horsepower and a turbocharger will get you price but not efficiency gains, with the 170-hp naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four doing 22 city / 34 hwy. In the other direction, that's one small mpg away from the 22 hwy / 33 city to be had by the 237-hp 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. Add all-wheel drive to the equation and pay a 2-mpg penalty, with the 237-hp motor doing 22 city / 31 hwy when turning all four wheels. Of course the hybrid Fusion Energi killed it, getting 47 city and 47 hwy. That is only bested by the 2012 Toyota Prius C and Prius, ties the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid and beats the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid. Among its competitors, the Fusion is in the mosh pit with the 2012 Toyota Camry's 25 city / 35 hwy, the Honda Accord's 27 city / 37 hwy and the Chevrolet Malibu's 22 city / 34 hwy, with just the sedan-surfing Nissan Altima jumping out at 27 city / 38 hwy.2013 Ford Fusion rated at 25/37 MPG, Hybrid gets 47 MPG originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 11:14:00 EST. HTC's waterproof, WiMAX-capable J handset now available in Hong Kong and Taiwan Posted: 07 Sep 2012 08:47 AM PDT HTC's waterproof, WiMAX-capable J handset now available in Hong Kong and Taiwan ![]() HTC's waterproof, WiMAX-capable J handset now available in Hong Kong and Taiwan Not to be outdone by Motorola and Nokia, HTC's quietly trying to steal some of the competition's thunder by unexpectedly outing a not-for-sale, fashion-driven variant of the One X and now announcing that its 4.3-inch waterproof J handset will be heading to a couple more Asian markets. Of course, let's not forget the Taiwanese outfit also has something else to show us at an upcoming special event in NYC. But, regardless of what we'll "see next," the J's actually here -- well, in Japan -- and with eyes set on Hong Kong and Taiwan next, making this the first time that Sense 4-loaded device is headed outside the Land of the Rising Sun. Just a quick recap: the HTC J comes with a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 MSM8660A, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, qHD PenTile OLED display, eight-megapixel camera and 1,810mAh battery. As for connectivity, you get quad-band GSM, WCDMA 2,100MHz, CDMA2000 800MHz and WiMAX 2.5-2.7GHz (for Japan and Taiwan only) radios, making it a fairly nice all-rounder albeit with limited regional compatibility for each of the faster connections. Oh, and about that waterproofing business: KDDI doesn't actually list it as a waterproof device, but HTC informed us that while the J meets global standards for waterproofing, it is not marketed as such in Japan due to particular criteria required by said carrier. We shall add more info here if HTC has more to say about this. At any rate, Hong Kong folks will be able to pick up this waterproof device for HK$4,498 (about $580) unsubsidized, whereas Taiwan will have to wait until the press event next Tuesday for tariff details on Taiwan Mobile. For now, we got you a video of the J going for a swim after the break. You know, just for kicks. Richard Lai contributed to this report.Continue reading HTC's waterproof, WiMAX-capable J handset now available in Hong Kong and TaiwanFiled under: Cellphones, MobileHTC's waterproof, WiMAX-capable J handset now available in Hong Kong and Taiwan originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 11:40:00 EDT.
