Amazon starts selling Sony's Cyber-shot RX1, NEX-6 and Alpha A99 Posted: 14 Sep 2012 03:25 PM PDT Amazon starts selling Sony's Cyber-shot RX1, NEX-6 and Alpha A99 ![]() Amazon starts selling Sony's Cyber-shot RX1, NEX-6 and Alpha A99 If you were interested in any of Sony's most recent camera revelations, it is now time to ready up that wallet of yours because Amazon's set to start taking orders pretty shortly. At this very moment, the trio's listed as "temporarily out of stock," but this is presumably due to the retailer being in the middle of stocking shelves with the latest and greatest shooters from the Japanese electronics outfit. Still, you can take your pick between that flagship Alpha A99, the mirrorless NEX-6 or the full-frame Cyber-shot RX1 and order one now, though they're not due to ship until October, November and December, respectively. As expected, both the A99 and RX1 are priced at around $2,800, while the NEX-6 carries a smaller $848 tag -- this, of course, being for the body-only flavors. All the links you need are down below, so make sure to bookmark 'em if you're interested in making one of these your own.Filed under: CamerasAmazon starts selling Sony's Cyber-shot RX1, NEX-6 and Alpha A99 originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 18:03:00 EDT. LG Optimus G makes its commercial debut in Korea (video) Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:53 PM PDT LG Optimus G makes its commercial debut in Korea (video) ![]() LG Optimus G makes its commercial debut in Korea (video) Well, we know there's an LG event right around the corner and, if we were the betting type, we'd put our money on the flagship Optimus G making its stateside debut. Perhaps the biggest clue to what the company has up its sleeve is that the quad-core Snapdragon S4-powered handset just made its video debut. The sleek 4.7 inch handset is staring in its own commercial, currently posted on YouTube, that will be airing in the manufacturer's homeland shortly after launch. The brief clip doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know, but we can't find any reason complain about a few extra peeks at it before release. Check out the video after the break.Continue reading LG Optimus G makes its commercial debut in Korea (video)Filed under: Cellphones, MobileLG Optimus G makes its commercial debut in Korea (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 17:04:00 EDT. Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners lose Google Wallet access (update) Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:52 PM PDT Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners lose Google Wallet access (update) ![]() Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners lose Google Wallet access (update) Verizon has never totally been on the Google Wallet bandwagon. First, Big Red refused to support the mobile payment system, citing its dependance upon proprietary hardware. Months later, some folks managed to gain access through the Play Store, but it looks like that the VZW GNex is, once again, Wallet-free. Word on the web has it that those Nexus owners are now, upon opening the app, greeted by a message saying that their version of Google Wallet is no longer supported, and that they need to update the app. Problem is, the Play Store is telling folks that their devices are no longer supported. We've confirmed the issue ourselves, but we don't know if this a temporary problem, or if it's a permanent move. We've reached out to both Google and Verizon for comment, and we'll let you know as soon as we hear back. [Thanks, Tim] Update: Verizon responded to our requests, but declined to add any new comment on the matter. Instead, VZW reiterated its previous statement that "Verizon doesn't block applications. Google Wallet is different from other widely-available m-commerce services. Google Wallet does not simply access the operating system and basic hardware of our phones like thousands of other applications. Instead, in order to work as architected by Google, Google Wallet needs to be integrated into a new, secure and proprietary hardware element in our phones." Canada's Competition Bureau sues Bell, Rogers and Telus over alleged misleading... Posted: 14 Sep 2012 02:52 PM PDT Canada's Competition Bureau sues Bell, Rogers and Telus over alleged misleading advertising ![]() Canada's Competition Bureau sues Bell, Rogers and Telus over alleged misleading advertising Allegations of misleading advertising practices among Canada's big telecom companies has been a recurring subject for some time, and it's now been brought to the fore once again in the form of a multi-million dollar lawsuit. The country's Competition Bureau announced today that, after a five-month investigation, it has decided to sue all three carriers and the industry group that represents them over ads that promote so-called premium texting services. In addition to demanding that such ads stop, the government agency is seeking full customer refunds for any charges incurred and a $10 million penalty from each carrier, plus an additional $1 million from the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association. For its part, the CWTA has unsurprisingly taken issue with the lawsuit, saying in a statement that it reached out to the Bureau last year to discuss the issue, and that its actions today "could disrupt the text message services, such as severe weather alerts, charitable donations, flight status updates or sports scores, on which millions of Canadian consumers depend." You can find that full statement, and the Competition Bureau's announcement of the lawsuit, at the links below.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileCanada's Competition Bureau sues Bell, Rogers and Telus over alleged misleading advertising originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 16:40:00 EDT. Update after update puts paid to any of that kinda talk, and again, here's another example -- navigation for Android is now available in nine more countries. It's the Middle East and North Africa that get the attention this time, with Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE and Saudia Arabia all getting the update. The service comes complete with Arabic voice search as well as "search along route" for routes to near-by POIs that won't take you the long way round. You'll need Android 4.0 or above if you want in on the action, but it's available now for those that do.Filed under: Internet, Software, MobileGoogle Maps Navigation for Android hits nine MENA nations, adds Arabic voice search originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 16:16:00 EDT. Apple's iPhone 5 will arrive with a free Lightning to 30-pin adapter (update: Ap... Posted: 14 Sep 2012 01:49 PM PDT Apple's iPhone 5 will arrive with a free Lightning to 30-pin adapter (update: Apple officially says no it won't) ![]() Apple's iPhone 5 will arrive with a free Lightning to 30-pin adapter (update: Apple officially says no it won't) If you were miffed at having to pay $29 to adapt your existing iPhone accessories to the iPhone 5's newfangled Lightning connector, fear not: Apple will throw in the first adapter, gratis. Extras will still run the aforementioned sum, which Cupertino has justified by saying the units will include chips to enable features like analog and USB audio along with syncing and charging. There's also a $39 cable version available, but neither format will let you output HDMI or VGA video -- there's more (as yet unpriced) adapters coming for that. Update: Well, the plot thickens. We're now hearing reports that the above wording is a mistake, and that the adapter isn't included after all. The information comes via a reader of The Next Web, who advises Apple sales support informed them it was an error. Of course, we're reaching out to get the final word on the matter. However, that won't be much consolation to those who made a purchase based on incorrect info. Update 2: The above wording is now nowhere to be found on Apple's site, suggesting that it was indeed an error. We'll keep you posted if we hear anything more. Update 3: Well, we've just received word from Apple confirming that the iPhone 5 will not ship with a 30-pin to Lightning adapter, which is a bit of a bummer. But, it does come with a Lightning to USB adapter, which supports USB audio and analog audio out, so if your current accessories have a USB port, all hope is not lost. Sadly, the specific iPod out functionality found in BMWs and Minis is not supported. The full comment is below. The Lightning to 30-pin adapter does not come in the box with iPhone 5. It is sold separately. However, the Lightning to USB cable does come with iPhone 5 for connection to AC chargers and other devices... The Lightning to 30 Pin adapter supports analog audio output, USB audio, as well as syncing and charging. Lightning to VGA and Lightning to HDMI cables will be available in the coming months.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileApple's iPhone 5 will arrive with a free Lightning to 30-pin adapter (update: Apple officially says no it won't) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 16:11:00 EDT. Pentagon to buy 1,500 Chevy Volts; critical comments can't be far behind Posted: 14 Sep 2012 01:17 PM PDT Pentagon to buy 1,500 Chevy Volts; critical comments can't be far behind ![]() Pentagon to buy 1,500 Chevy Volts; critical comments can't be far behind Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Chevrolet, GM, Legislation and Policy, USA Now it's going to get fun. Reports are out that the U.S. Department of Defense will buy as many as 1,500 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrids from General Motors, and some folks are already in a tizzy about it. The New American reported that the Pentagon will buy the extended-range plug-ins in order to cut its carbon footprint and save on refueling costs in the process. Fox News followed up by noting that the purchase would be "the latest controversy in the Volt's short life" because the Volts would be purchased "at taxpayer expense." Fox also cited a recent Reuters report saying that GM was losing almost $50,000 for each Volt sold and that sales have been "moribund." That number is highly misleading, as ex-GM executive Bob Lutz, who led the development of the Volt, said when he disputed Reuters' math and said the car may come close to breaking even before its lifetime is up. Meanwhile, a Defense Department purchase would appear to be further recognition of how the Pentagon is concerned about global warming and how gas prices, which for U.S. troops in Afghanistan can climb as high as $400 a gallon, are eating away at the Defense Department budget. Either way, a Pentagon acquisition batch of Volts would further help a model where sales have been on an upswing. Last month, GM boosted Volt sales more than ninefold from a year earlier to a monthly record 2,831 units. The automaker has sold 13,497 Volts through the first eight months of the year, almost twice as many as GM sold all of last year. The Defense Department hasn't made any announcements regarding potential Volt purchases. GM representatives didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from AutoblogGreen. ITC says Apple didn't violate four Samsung patents with iPad, iPhone Posted: 14 Sep 2012 01:17 PM PDT ITC says Apple didn't violate four Samsung patents with iPad, iPhone ![]() ITC says Apple didn't violate four Samsung patents with iPad, iPhone This just hasn't been Samsung's summer. On top of Apple winning its earliest civil lawsuit against Samsung, the International Trade Commission has just handed out an initial determination that Apple didn't violate any of four Samsung patents (including two reportedly standards-essential examples) by offering the iPad and iPhone. While Judge James Gildea didn't publicly outline why Apple was in the clear, he added that Samsung lacks a domestic business that uses the patents -- important when it's trying to claim economic harm in the US. The verdict still gives Samsung at least four months' room to breathe while the ITC reviews the decision, but it's hard to see Samsung enjoying the reduced offensive strength when it's already on the defensive in American courtrooms.Filed under: Cellphones, Tablets, MobileITC says Apple didn't violate four Samsung patents with iPad, iPhone originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 16:06:00 EDT. Our frustrations might soon become a thing of the past, however, with some help from boffins at the GraduateUniversity for Advanced Studies in Japan. They are working on technology which monitors keyboard pressure and silences those distractions until it deems you're not busy, showing over 80 percent accuracy during volunteer testing. Understanding that quiet time is also appreciated for other tasks, they plan to use similar techniques to spot when you're staring intently at that report or -- more importantly -- attending to a beverage. Find My iPhone Leads To Arrest Of Suspects In Atlanta Armed Robbery Case Posted: 14 Sep 2012 12:45 PM PDT Find My iPhone Leads To Arrest Of Suspects In Atlanta Armed Robbery Case ![]() Find My iPhone Leads To Arrest Of Suspects In Atlanta Armed Robbery Case Apple's iPhone has had its crime-fighting capabilities detailed before, but a new story today out of Atlanta (via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution) has its Find My iPhone feature helping to catch two suspects in an armed robbery case. After five women were held up at gunpoint near the Biltmore Hotel last night in the Georgia state capital, police tracked one of their stolen iPhones to an apartment and nabbed the suspects. A tipster tells us that police used Find My iPhone to track the device, the service that Apple makes available to iCloud users who also own iPhone, iPod touch, Mac and iPad software. Find My iPhone has helped in arrests a number of times in the past, including in an armed robbery case reported by the L.A. Times last November. |
Here's the company behind Nintendo TVii (spoilers: it's not Nintendo) Posted: 14 Sep 2012 12:45 PM PDT Here's the company behind Nintendo TVii (spoilers: it's not Nintendo) ![]() Here's the company behind Nintendo TVii (spoilers: it's not Nintendo) Brad Pelo is suddenly in charge of a major Nintendo initiative for the Japanese company's next big console, the Wii U, despite not being an employee at Nintendo. Instead, Pelo is CEO of i.TV -- a "social television and second screen technology company" that's worked with everyone from Entertainment Weekly to Engadget parent company AOL -- and he's the man responsible for Nintendo TVii. At least he's the man responsible for the company providing the software behind Nintendo TVii (the guy behind the guy, if you will). And his company brings more to the bargaining table than just software -- existing relationships with cable providers and TiVO in the US bolster what i.TV offers Nintendo in a major way. "For Nintendo TVii, there is a mutual benefit in existing relationships we have. Like TiVO for example -- we were the first to bring TiVO to the mobile platform. There's also the benefit of tests that we have done over the years with the cable companies, based on components of our platform," Pelo told Engadget. But how did this all come about? He said it wasn't long after Nintendo's original Wii U E3 reveal. "The genesis of the experience you're seeing here was really when the Wii U was announced, and it was clear that this is the ideal second screen," Pelo explained. "Ideal," in Pelo's eyes, means a closed system with a "dedicated second screen." In so many words, while he acknowledges that tablets offered by other manufacturers are technically superior, they don't offer the same whole-system approach that Nintendo's Wii U is offering. "You might not think of it as the ideal hardware compared to an iPad if I really had a dedicated second screen. But it is in the living room, and it's persistent. It doesn't even really work outside of the living room -- it's attached to the main viewing service in the home," he explained, referencing the Wii U's tablet-style controller.Gallery: Nintendo TVii press shotsContinue reading Here's the company behind Nintendo TVii (spoilers: it's not Nintendo)Filed under: Gaming, Home Entertainment, Tablets, HDHere's the company behind Nintendo TVii (spoilers: it's not Nintendo) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 15:25:00 EDT. Toyota RAV4 EV gets EPA rating of 78 MPGe, 103-mile range; leases are $599/month Posted: 14 Sep 2012 11:41 AM PDT Toyota RAV4 EV gets EPA rating of 78 MPGe, 103-mile range; leases are $599/month ![]() Toyota RAV4 EV gets EPA rating of 78 MPGe, 103-mile range; leases are $599/month Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Toyota Buried in a press release from Toyota about the loan and lease options for the 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV is the long-awaited confirmation that this is a 100-mile electric vehicle. The EPA has tested the CUV and rates it as having a driving range of 103 miles fully charged and 76 combined miles per gallon equivalent (74 highway and 78 city). This makes it the first non-Tesla-branded EV the EPA has rated at over 100 miles. The $49,800 RAV4 EV will be available through a 1.9-percent APR loan for qualified customers and a 36-month lease option at $599 per month with $3,499 down. It's coming to select California dealers in major metro markets the week of September 24, 2012. The RAV4 EV is eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit and is also expected to qualify for a $2,500 rebate through California's Clean Vehicle Rebate Program. It will qualify for a white sticker in the state's High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) program. The sales volume is only expected to reach 2,600 through 2014, but this might (might) increase if Toyota decides to build more. California is the most logical market to start up in. The first version of the RAV4 EV came to California to meet the state's zero emission vehicles (ZEV) mandate. About 1,500 of them were sold between 1997 and 2003, and perhaps these owners will be interested in the second generation RAV4 EV. It's also the state where the supplier of the RAV4 EV's battery and electric powertrain, Tesla Motors, is based. EV supplier equipment provider Leviton is the approved Toyota charger partner. The fastest available charge time is approximately six hours, through Leviton's custom 240V (Level 2), 40A, 9.6 kW output charging station. For more information on charging options, go here. For details on the Toyota dealer network offering the RAV4 EV, go here.Continue reading Toyota RAV4 EV gets EPA rating of 78 MPGe, 103-mile range; leases are $599/monthToyota RAV4 EV gets EPA rating of 78 MPGe, 103-mile range; leases are $599/month originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 14:17:00 EST. Those bent on pre-ordering through the Apple Store saw the company's online portal exhaust itself within an hour of the 3:01AM availability -- faster than the iPhone 4 and 4S, and no doubt crushing the hopes of North Americans who value their sleep. Individual US carriers weren't quite so quick to sell out, although they weren't far behind. AT&T is now quoting two to three weeks for any new orders, and Verizon doesn't see any new orders on their way until September 26th. Only Sprint is left taking pre-orders with the expectation that they'll arrive next Friday, and it's certain that the supply situation won't get better in the near future. We're curious to see just how many iPhones sell before the weekend is out, or even the day; given the briskness of pre-orders for the iPhone 4S last year, we wouldn't be surprised to see some braggadocio from Apple or the carriers by the time Monday rolls around.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileiPhone 5 shipping times slip almost immediately to 2 weeks, early birds feel validated originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 14:27:00 EDT. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 and 660 review roundup: hitting the sweet spot, sometimes Posted: 14 Sep 2012 11:41 AM PDT NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 and 660 review roundup: hitting the sweet spot, sometimes ![]() NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 and 660 review roundup: hitting the sweet spot, sometimes If you're building or upgrading a budget gaming rig, it'll be hard to ignore the GeForce GTX 650 and 660. Whether or not NVIDIA's new chipsets are worth the glance is another matter, and early reviews suggest that a sale depends on just which market you're in. The GTX 660, by far the darling of the review crowd, competes solidly against the Radeon HD 7850 by outrunning AMD's hardware in most situations while undercutting on the official price. Only a few have taken a look at the lower-end GTX 650, but it's not as much of a clear-cut purchasing decision -- the entry-level video often slots in between the performance of the Radeon HD 7750 and 7770 without the price edge of its bigger brother. Either card is much better value for the money than the GT 640, however, and looks to be a meaningful upgrade if you're trading up from equivalent prior-generation gear. Velti Report: iPhone 5 Will Take A Big Bite Of Mobile Ad Share Posted: 14 Sep 2012 10:37 AM PDT Velti Report: iPhone 5 Will Take A Big Bite Of Mobile Ad Share ![]() Velti Report: iPhone 5 Will Take A Big Bite Of Mobile Ad Share Mobile marketer Velti just released its August report on the mobile ad marketing, but instead of focusing on the past month, it's looking ahead to the growth of the iPhone 5. The report points out that the iPhone 4S had a rapid rise to the top, becoming the top device in mobile ad impressions within a few months — it was already claiming 10 percent of impressions four months after its release. Velti predicts that the iPhone 5 will be adopted even more quickly than the 4S, driving more than 25 percent of all iPhone ad impressions within six months, and becoming one of the top five devices in Velti's Mobclix ad exchange. |
Twitter hands over Occupy Wall Street protestor's updates under pressure Posted: 14 Sep 2012 10:37 AM PDT Twitter hands over Occupy Wall Street protestor's updates under pressure ![]() Twitter hands over Occupy Wall Street protestor's updates under pressure Twitter has been building a modest reputation for siding with the little guy (or girl) when it comes to communication privacy, and it just demonstrated how far it's willing to go in a showdown with Manhattan's Criminal Court over a demand to hand over tweets from Occupy Wall Street protestor Malcolm Harris. The social network has been pushed into delivering the claimed evidence, but only as it faced a deadline and the threat of a fine -- it even tried one last request for a stay before producing hard copies of the messages. However much the handover affects Harris' chances at winning during trial, it emphasizes that public posts have serious consequences -- companies ultimately can't shield you from the law. Intel claims Clover Trail-based Atom won't properly run Linux, points us to Wind... Posted: 14 Sep 2012 10:05 AM PDT Intel claims Clover Trail-based Atom won't properly run Linux, points us to Windows 8 instead ![]() Intel claims Clover Trail-based Atom won't properly run Linux, points us to Windows 8 instead There's potentially bad news ahead if you're hoping to wipe the drive on that future HP Envy X2 and load Ubuntu -- Intel reportedly claimed at IDF that Clover Trail-based Atom processors "cannot" handle Linux properly. As outlined in The Inquirer's account of events, the issue is more a matter of optimization than an outright block: Linux doesn't yet know how to cope all of Clover Trail's power state changes at the kernel level, which would put any penguin-powered PC at a disadvantage. Intel would really, really prefer that you run Windows 8, as the new Atom and Microsoft's OS are tuned to work hand-in-hand. Linux might catch up, but the Windows-only emphasis is a sharp break from Intel's tendency to shower love on open-source OS projects across the board, including ongoing work like Intel-native Android builds or Tizen.Filed under: Laptops, Tablets, SoftwareIntel claims Clover Trail-based Atom won't properly run Linux, points us to Windows 8 instead originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 12:51:00 EDT. Motorola Mobility launches Android-powered HMC3260 'Cloud Broadband' media streamer Posted: 14 Sep 2012 10:05 AM PDT Motorola Mobility launches Android-powered HMC3260 'Cloud Broadband' media streamer ![]() Motorola Mobility launches Android-powered HMC3260 'Cloud Broadband' media streamer Motorola will be supplying China's WASU Digital Group, a cable and broadband provider, with the HMC3260 Android entertainment device for cloud-based, broadband internet streaming. Dubbed "Cloud Broadband" by the operator, the device will provide the primary connection for "hybrid fiber coax networks," while also offering a touchscreen interface, based on an unnamed flavor of Android. WASU claims the device will allow "easy access and search" for on-demand HD video services, storage, games and apps, on top of regular cable TV services. There's no mention of internal storage or any other specs or service details, but adding an Android-based touchscreen to a broadband connection device? Sounds like a promising idea.Continue reading Motorola Mobility launches Android-powered HMC3260 'Cloud Broadband' media streamerFiled under: Household, HDMotorola Mobility launches Android-powered HMC3260 'Cloud Broadband' media streamer originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 12:28:00 EDT. T-Mobile USA nano-SIM poses for the camera, may arrive in October Posted: 14 Sep 2012 08:26 AM PDT T-Mobile USA nano-SIM poses for the camera, may arrive in October ![]() T-Mobile USA nano-SIM poses for the camera, may arrive in October T-Mobile's American branch would really like to scoop up a few iPhone owners, and we're getting a better sense of just how far it's willing to go to lure refuseniks who'd otherwise go to AT&T. A product matrix leaked to TmoNews both shows the US carrier's specially branded nano-SIM cards and suggests they'll be available in October. And while there wasn't really any doubt, the cards should be in stores just for unlocked iPhone 5 models -- "no T-Mobile devices require this SIM card," the company tells its staff. The wait could be a pain, but the sighting at least provides some comfort to those who would only let their iPhone 5 run on Magenta's network.Filed under: Cellphones, MobileT-Mobile USA nano-SIM poses for the camera, may arrive in October originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 10:50:00 EDT. Leaf owners challenge Nissan on "we don't have a battery problem" Posted: 14 Sep 2012 07:22 AM PDT Leaf owners challenge Nissan on "we don't have a battery problem" ![]() Leaf owners challenge Nissan on "we don't have a battery problem" Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Manufacturing/Plants, Nissan Things appear to be heating up in the desert. Some Nissan Leaf owners aren't buying the automaker's claim that suspected loss of battery capacity stems from issues related to the car's display readings and not fundamental battery issues. To prove the point, about a dozen Leaf drivers are getting together in Phoenix this weekend to compare capacity-display levels with actual driving range, according to Green Car Reports. Leaf owner Tony Williams, who is leading the effort, says that, while batteries with a full set of "bars" indicating battery capacity will provide as much as an 84-mile range, cars missing two bars and four bars will come up anywhere between 18 miles and 28 miles short of that range. Reports started surfacing this summer about Arizona Leaf owners complaining that the heat caused the cars to rapidly lose battery capacity. Nissan, which has long said that a battery pack will keep as much as 80 percent of its capacity after ten years, more recently noted that heat could only hurt capacity if it climbed as high at the 130-140-degree range. Either way, the publicity doesn't help Nissan, whose Leaf sales have lagged this year. Last month, Nissan sold 685 Leafs in the U.S., which was up from 395 in July but way down from 1,362 units in August 2011.Leaf owners challenge Nissan on "we don't have a battery problem" originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 14 Sep 2012 10:04:00 EST.
