Xiaomi Phones may enter Europe next year, because China ain't big enough

Xiaomi Phones may enter Europe next year, because China ain't big enough
Here's a bit of good news to soak in over the weekend. After the unveiling of the Xiaomi Phone 2 (aka Mi2) in front of some 3,000 people yesterday, a reliable source informed us that the Chinese startup is already looking to bring its highly affordable phones to Europe next year. Alas, we couldn't get a more specific time frame, but assuming Xiaomi wants to deliver its first quad core device to the Europeans as well, it'd likely be within the first half of next year, well before the next August 16th announcement (the company's managed to stick to the same date so far). Of course, it all depends on whether Xiaomi can scale its business model for the unknown territories, and it'll certainly need some solid partners to do so -- much like its collaboration with local retail channels China Unicom, China Telecom and Vancl. Luckily, Xiaomi will be doing a warm up first in Taiwan. As reported by Business Next last month, chairman Lei Jun made a high profile visit to several Taiwanese carriers in the hopes of breaking into their market by the end of this year. If successful, Lei should be able to meet his ambitious sales target of 6 million Xiaomi Phones accumulated -- still some way away from the 3.52 million units sold so far. Judging by the madness at the event this week (see gallery below), it should be no problem. U.S. Appeals Court throws out E15 lawsuit against EPA

U.S. Appeals Court throws out E15 lawsuit against EPA
Filed under: Ethanol, Legislation and Policy, USA In late 2010, the EPA was sued by a collection of grocery, auto and petroleum industry association groups over the issue of increasing the nationally available ethanol blend from E10 - a mix of 90 percent gasoline and 10 percent ethanol - to E15. Today, that lawsuit was thrown out by a U.S. Appeals Court on the grounds that the trade groups did not have the right to sue, Bloomberg reports. The trade organizations claimed that the shift to E15 would drive up "the price of food and gasoline and harm engines," Bloomberg writes, but the judge did not see that any harm was done. In his decision, Circuit Judge David Sentelle wrote: Petitioners have to demonstrate that EPA's actions-in particular, approving E15 via partial waivers-have caused any one of their members an injury in fact for which we can provide redress in this action. Each industry group advances a theory of standing, but none is in fact adequate to meet the burden of establishing standing under Article III. You can read the entire decision here. A director for the American Petroleum Institute emailed Bloomberg to say, "Today's court decision is a big loss for consumers, for safety and for our environment." E15 was officially approved for sale in the U.S. last month, and comes with a new set of rules.U.S. Appeals Court throws out E15 lawsuit against EPA originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 16:29:00 EST. AT&T On FaceTime Over 3G: Free For Mobile Share Users, Unavailable For Everyone Else
More than a few AT&T customers got worked up a few weeks back when a peculiar pop-up in iOS 6 Beta 3 pointed to the possibility that the carrier would charge people to use FaceTime over its wireless data network. Well, that's officially not that case -- AT&T just confirmed in a statement that it won't be charging its subscribers to video chat over the air. That would normally be great news, but there's a catch: some people won't be able to use the feature at all.

Motorola schedules press event for September 5th, dubs it the 'day's main event'
September 5th is going to be a pretty busy day, by the looks of it. While we'll likely get to see a few Windows Phone 8 devices in Nokia's Lumia lineup in the morning, Motorola has scheduled a Save the Date for the afternoon. We're not sure exactly what to expect, though it's certainly possible we'll see a Droid RAZR HD or XT907 to balance out whatever Stephen Elop will be showing off. (We especially love the dig at Nokia by saying it's "the day's main event.") We'll keep you posted as we hear more, and we'll be there to give you word on the latest and greatest from HelloMoto.Filed under: Cellphones, WirelessMotorola schedules press event for September 5th, dubs it the 'day's main event' originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 16:50:00 EDT. AT&T: FaceTime over cellular feature to be included in Mobile Share plans at no extra charge, not available for other data plans
AT&T is offering a bit of clarification on the rumors involving a standalone feature offering FaceTime over Cellular for an additional charge: the iOS6 feature (due out this fall) will actually be included at no extra cost, but only for those customers who opt for the Mobile Share plans. Anyone on the grandfathered unlimited data plans or traditional tiered offerings will only be able to rely on the good 'ol WiFi whenever they feel the urge to use Apple's video chat service. From the looks of it, it seems that AT&T is hoping to conserve the amount of network bandwidth that would be chewed up by unlimited customers, while also having it function as a value-added feature for its newest shared data plans. In terms of usage, this FaceTime capability will use up part of your data allotment (instead of minutes). So, the good news is that the feature is free -- the bad news is that it won't make unlimited users any happier. Find AT&T's official statement below.Continue reading AT&T: FaceTime over cellular feature to be included in Mobile Share plans at no extra charge, not available for other data plansFiled under: Cellphones, Tablet PCs, WirelessAT&T: FaceTime over cellular feature to be included in Mobile Share plans at no extra charge, not available for other data plans originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 16:29:00 EDT. The New iPad Is Finally Catching Up In Ad Impressions (According To Velti)
Yes, it's a big day for mobile ad reports, at least at TechCrunch — mobile marketing company Velti just released its report for July. One of the themes in recent reports has been the relatively slow growth of the new iPad when it comes to ad impression frsnt. In July, however, Apple's new tablet started to close its gap with the iPad 2 — the older device now accounts for 24 percent of the total tablet impressions tracked, compared to 20 percent for the new iPad. Apple also released the new iPad in China last month, and in the week following, ad impressions from the device increased 150 percent.

Campaign to build Nikola Telsa museum hits $500k in less than 48 hours, hopes to raise $850k
Nikola Tesla may not have gotten all the credit he was due in his lifetime, but his stature has grown considerably since, and many of the inventions he dreamed up are now finding new life in today's technology. Now, a new effort is underway to truly cement his place in history -- even moreso than having David Bowie play him in a movie. Two days ago, Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal comic strip launched an Indiegogo campaign to help fund a Tesla museum at the site of Nikola Tesla's laboratory in Shoreham, New York, and it's now already raised over $500,000. That money will go directly to the non-profit Tesla Science Center, which has been attempting to buy the property for $1.6 million, half of which will be covered by a matching grant from the state of New York (meaning the goal for the campaign is $850,000, although anything raised above that will go toward the actual building of the museum). As Inman notes, however, even raising "just" $850k will ensure that the property isn't sold to someone else and demolished, as others have been looking to do. Those interested in contributing can find all the details at the links below.Filed under: ScienceCampaign to build Nikola Telsa museum hits $500k in less than 48 hours, hopes to raise $850k originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 15:47:00 EDT. 19 Months And 1 Pivot Later, AnyLeaf Relaunches As AnyList To Build A Better Grocery List App
In early 2011, Y Combinator-backed AnyLeaf opened its grocery deal aggregation service to to citizens of the San Francisco Bay Area. Our own Leena Rao (and TC alumnus Greg Kumparak) thought rather highly of it, but it's been over a year since then and the team behind it has had a change of heart. Today, the company formerly known as AnyLeaf will be officially relaunching with a new name and a new spin on its original mission. CEO and co-founder Jeff Hunter says the company — now called AnyList — still plans to improve the grocery shopping experience, this time with its thoughtful (and free) iOS-only grocery list app.

Samsung has received permission from local authorities to erect a 330,000 square meter, 10-storey high research and development center in Umyeon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul. The facility, which broke ground last week, is expected to cost around 1 trillion won ($822 million) and will house around 10,000 employees. OnLive reportedly shutting down, new company forming in its wake (update: OnLive says 'of course not')
Well, here's a bit of a shocker. After a strong showing at E3 and partnerships with companies like OUYA, gaming service OnLive is reportedly closing down, with an entire staff layoff resulting. Polygon is reporting the story as relayed to the site by game developer Brian Fargo. We've reached out to the company and received a non-comment comment, "We don't respond to rumors and have no comment." Our OnLive contact also used opportunity to plug its Google TV tie-ins and few giveaways -- so, for the moment at least, things seem to be moving along as usual. Update: Joystiq has reached out for comment as well, getting a similar, yet decidedly more blunt response: "We don't respond to rumors, but of course not." Blunt response or no, we're sure this isn't the last we'll be hearing about this one.Filed under: GamingOnLive reportedly shutting down, new company forming in its wake (update: OnLive says 'of course not') originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 15:14:00 EDT. Jetta Hybrid sets world speed record at 185 mph
Filed under: Hybrid, Volkswagen, Racing After blasting down the Bonneville Salt Flats at 185 miles per hour, the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is now the "world's fastest hybrid," according to VW. The modified Jetta Hybrid was driven by Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago, and the official speed was 185.394 mph (298.363 kph). That makes the car, "the fastest speed ever achieved by a production-based hybrid car on the famed Bonneville Salt Flats." Production-based here still means that the powertrain was modified by Volkswagen engineers in Germany. We can see aerodynamic wheels, but exact changes that were implemented were not described, only that the car was "run according to SCTA rules." The production Jetta Hybrid gets 45 miles per gallon and has a 0-60 time of 9.0 seconds. It uses a four-cylinder, 1.4-liter turbocharged, 150-horsepower, TSI gasoline engine mated to a 20-kW (27-hp) electric motor. 185 mpg is impressive, sure, but it's not that far behind the record set in May by a huge hybrid Volvo truck in the flying kilometer: 165 mph.Continue reading Jetta Hybrid sets world speed record at 185 mphJetta Hybrid sets world speed record at 185 mph originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 13:57:00 EST. Skype for Windows 8 preview, user interface revealed in web leak
Wondering what Skype's Windows 8 interface might look like? Sure, you could use your imagination -- and probably guess the design with a fair amount of accuracy -- or you can poke around an early hands-on over at Neowin, complete with a half-dozen UI grabs. While still in preview state, the app appears to be "relatively solid," enabling calls and chats with "little issue." From the looks of it, touch fiends will be able to tap around just as accurately as their mouse-bound counterparts can click, with large buttons available throughout. Judging by the app's current state, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect a more formal appearance any day now, letting early Windows 8 users take the native app for a spin before the rest of us get access in the fall. How 3D printing changed the face of 'ParaNorman'

How 3D printing changed the face of 'ParaNorman'
We drive around in circles trying to find the place. There's no signage indicating our destination -- no giant, looming cartoon characters or even a logo, just a faceless building in a maze of industrial parks, about 17 miles outside of Portland. It's a beautiful drive of course, sandwiched on a vaguely winding highway by dense Pacific Northwest foliage, past Nike's global headquarters. Compared to the world-class tracks and fields dotting the shoemaker's campus, Laika's own offices are an exercise in modesty (in spite of financial ties Phil Knight), virtually indistinguishable from the densely packed businesses that surround it. There are, perhaps, certain advantages to such anonymity -- for one thing, it helps the studio avoid random drop-ins by movie fans hoping to chew the ear off of their animation heroes. It also means that our cab driver does a good three passes before finally getting out of the car and asking a smoker standing outside a nearby building where to go. He thinks about it for a moment and indicates a building -- a large, but otherwise indistinguishable space. The lobby doesn't scream Hollywood either, but it certainly offers some less-than-subtle hints that we've found the place: a wall-sized black and white image of classic film cameras (ancient devices, someone tells me, that were utilized on the company's previous film), and in one corner, a tiny room encased in glass, with Coraline seated at a table in its center. This building is the house that she built -- or at least kept the lights on; "Coraline" was released after its planned successor "Jack & Ben's Animated Adventure" failed to materialize. Inside, the cavernous space in excess of 150,000 square feet has become a bustling small town of creatives, laboring away in its recesses, many having traveled through several time zones to be in its rank, like carnies hopping from town to town. Stop-motion animation, after all, isn't the most prevalent of professions, and while we've arguably entered a sort of golden age for the infamously labor-intensive art form, thanks in large part to the success of projects like "Coraline," the number of studios actually investing in the form can be counted on one hand.Gallery: How 3D printing changed the face of 'ParaNorman'Continue reading How 3D printing changed the face of 'ParaNorman'Filed under: Misc. HP Forms Mobility Global Business Unit, Proving Again HP Needs A New Business Naming Unit
Will the TouchPad ride again? HP apparently just internally announced a new division focused on mobile within the Personal Systems Group. This new team, named in HP's traditional jargon, Mobility Global Business Unit, is essentially responsible for getting HP back in the tablet fight. Details are still a bit light. This word comes from a leaked memo obtained by the The Verge. The memo says in part, "With this move, we are building on our commitment to re-invest in mobility via dedicated leadership, focused research and development, amazing new products and a growing suite of applications and services." It sounds like HP is finally getting serious about tablets.

MoPub Mobile Ad Report: Android And Social Networking On The Rise
MoPub, the Accel-backed ad serving startup that helps mobile publishers manage multiple monetization sources, has just released its first report on the data from its mobile ad exchange. It takes a different tack than most of the reports I've seen, focusing on slightly arcane-sounding metrics like win rate (percent of auctions that have winning bids) and bid depth (bids per impression request) to show advertiser demand. In terms of mobile platforms, MoPub's data shows iOS still ahead of Android when it comes to auction volume, but the gap appears to be closing — in May, Android had 28 percent of auction volume, a number that had increased to 39 percent in June. iOS also appears to be maintaining a big lead over Android in ad pricing, with an average eCPM of 90 cents on iOS versus 43 cents on Android in June.

Despite the culling of Palm's offerings from its product portfolio, HP isn't exiting the tablet space. Far from it. Evidence of a new tablet has been floating around since April, and we've even caught a couple glimpses of the so-called Slate 8. Now, The Verge reports that the company has created a Mobility unit within the Personal Systems Group dedicated to making such consumer hardware. According to a leaked internal memo, it looks like Alberto Torres, formerly chief of MeeGo ops at Nokia, will be the man in charge of the new division. The Mobility group will first focus on tablets, with a "soon-to-be-launched" initial offering, but it plans to expand into other product segments moving forward. Google Street View expands to cover swaths of Brazil and Mexican ruins, won't substitute for a vacation
For a country that dominates the Latin American landscape, Brazil hasn't had much of a presence in Google Street View outside of major cities like Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo. A fresh update to Street View coverage has just gone live that fleshes out the the more far-flung corners of the map. It's now possible to see what it's like on the ground in much of the southern tip of the country as well as the northern coastline. Further north, Mexicans get their own treat: Google is now providing the panoramic views for ancient ruins such as Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan, just in case you'd rather not try to blend in with all the other tourists. The widened reach is undoubtedly no match for booking a flight and visiting in person, but it will save you the trouble of brushing up on your Portugese or ancient Mayan.Filed under: InternetGoogle Street View expands to cover swaths of Brazil and Mexican ruins, won't substitute for a vacation originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 13:13:00 EDT. iPhone reportedly vulnerable to text message spoofing flaw

iPhone reportedly vulnerable to text message spoofing flaw
If you're an iPhone owner, you may want to use good judgment before responding to any out-of-the-blue text messages in the near future. French jailbreak developer and security researcher pod2g finds that every iPhone firmware revision, even iOS 6 beta 4, is susceptible to a flaw that theoretically lets a ne'er-do-well spoof the reply address of outbound SMS messages. As Apple is using the reply-to address of a message's User Data Header to identify the origin rather than the raw source, receiving iPhone owners risk being fooled by a phishing attack (or just a dishonest acquaintance) that poses as a contact or a company. A proof of concept messaging tool is coming to the iPhone soon, but pod2g is pushing for an official solution before the next iOS version is out the door. We've asked Apple for commentary and will get back if there's an update. In the meantime, we wouldn't panic -- if the trickery hasn't been a significant issue since 2007, there isn't likely to be a sudden outbreak today.Filed under: CellphonesiPhone reportedly vulnerable to text message spoofing flaw originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 12:53:00 EDT. Game on! Elon Musk calls Fisker Karma 'a mediocre product at a high price'
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Manufacturing/Plants, Tesla Motors, Fisker It is official: Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk and Fisker Automotive chief Henrik Fisker are throwing jabs at each other, without wearing gloves or safety helmets! Okay, maybe it's not that exciting, but, for those interested in the egos and competition behind the new industry of luxury plug-ins, it's worth checking out. Most of the juicy information came from the extremely busy Musk, taking time away from developing advanced EV technology and Space X cargo ships, to talk gossip with Automobile Magazine about archrival Fisker that goes back a few years, when Tesla unsuccessfully sued Henrik Fisker for developing the Karma while under contract for the design of the Model S - basically paying someone to design his own car. Another, more newsworthy zinger was when Musk called out Fisker as a smart designer but one who does not understand the underlying technology problem. Musk said: The fundamental problem with Henrik Fisker - he is a designer or stylist...he thinks the reason we don't have electric cars is for lack of styling. This is not the reason. It's fundamentally a technology problem. At the same time, you need to make it look good and feel good, because otherwise you're going to have an impaired product. But just making something look like an electric car does not make it an electric car. Fisker has been scrambling around lately to deal with battery fires and recalls connected to its A123 Systems partnership. Musk's biggest jab was directed at the flagship Karma: "It's a mediocre product at a high price." So what did Henrik Fisker have to say? In a written response to Automobile Magazine, Fisker stayed friendly, but did throw down the competitive gauntlet: range anxiety. "Obviously, Tesla and Fisker are appealing to two different customer bases with two totally different technologies. Tesla has pure EV and Fisker has a range-extended offering with no compromise on range," he wrote. Zing! Fisker thanked Musk for giving a nod to the good-looking Karma, which won Automobile's 2012 Design of the Year. He also made a statement to clear up the legal wrangle: Fisker won in court. A judge threw out the case and awarded costs to Fisker. Both companies have done a lot of "borrowing" of existing technologies to bring their plug-ins to market. Karma needed Quantum Technologies to provide the plug-in hybrid drivetrain and used a General Motors-sourced 2.0 liter turbo four-cylinder engine. Tesla used the Lotus Elise to develop its first car, the Roadster. That being said, the sparring judges would probably send more points to Tesla Motors, which is selling its battery system and EV powertrain technology to companies like Toyota. Ding, ding, ding! Fujitsu making laptops from unwanted CDs and DVDs

Fujitsu making laptops from unwanted CDs and DVDs
Back in our day, we used to listen to music on shiny plastic discs with lasers, not any of your new-fangled Zunes and what not. That was back when bands had sensible names, like the Dave Clark Five. These days, however, CDs and DVDs are remnants of a simpler time, a time before these kids were playing their Lady Gagas on their Rio Carbons. Fujitsu will be putting those outdated media formats to work again, with a recycling program that uses the material to build shiny new notebooks, starting with the Lifebook P772/E enterprise laptop, with more models to follow. According to the company, the new program is set to reduce the use of new plastic by 10 tons a year and slice C02 emissions by around 15 percent. More information on the program can be found after the break. Now please get off our lawn.Continue reading Fujitsu making laptops from unwanted CDs and DVDsFiled under: LaptopsFujitsu making laptops from unwanted CDs and DVDs originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 12:31:00 EDT. Engadget's back to school guide 2012: digital cameras

Engadget's back to school guide 2012: digital cameras
Welcome to Engadget's back to school guide! The end of summer vacation isn't nearly as much fun as the weeks that come before, but a chance to update your tech tools likely helps to ease the pain. Today, we've got our optical viewfinders set firmly on digital cameras -- and you can head to the back to school hub to see the rest of the product guides as they're added throughout the month. Be sure to keep checking back -- at the end of the month we'll be giving away a ton of the gear featured in our guides -- and hit up the hub page right here! Your smartphone can take pictures, you say? Well, sure it can, but try snapping away at a frat party -- you're likely to walk away with a blurry mess. Your Facebook friends and future employers deserve an accurate account of those glory days, and you'll need a proper snapper to get the job done. College is as good a time as any to learn responsibility, but don't expect to walk out of the experience with all your gear unscathed. To that end, freshmen should look long and hard at our point-and-shoot picks, which include models that you won't be afraid to toss around, or drop in the jungle juice. After that come the mirrorless ILCs, which should satisfy the more advanced photogs in the bunch, followed by our digital SLR picks, which, sadly, may be out of reach of all but photography majors and deep-pocketed private school types. Finally, you'll have yet another opportunity to enter our fantastic giveaway at the bottom of the page, just after the break. Lenovo reveals K860 LePhone, quad-core Exynos and a 5-inch screen
It's been a pretty good week for Lenovo all things told, but the Chinese firms isn't stopping to congratulate itself too much. Today, it's business as usual, marked by the official arrival of the new K860 "Music Phone" aka LePhone. The quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos 4412 chip, Mali-400MP GPU, 5-inch (1,280 x 720) display, 1GB of RAM and slight 9.6mm-thick form should come together to sing a sweet song though. The 8-megapixel snapper is no slouch either, with support for 100 frames continuous shooting and 1080p video recording (plus there's a 2-megapixel camera around the front, too). If all this sounds like a recipe for battery-drain, there's a 2,250 mAh cell to help keep you going. This will all be running on Android 4.0.4, but currently no word on price or availability -- but it's not like there aren't any other large phones to think about in the meantime. Update: We got a little excited in the translation for a moment there. The "Music" (or Happiness -- both pronounce "le") Phone is of course the LePhone we link to in the article.Filed under: CellphonesLenovo reveals K860 LePhone, quad-core Exynos and a 5-inch screen originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 11:40:00 EDT. Custom ROM brings Android 4.0.4 to the Desire HD, does what HTC wouldn't
HTC wasn't too popular when they denied Desire HD owners a hearty mouthful of Ice Cream Sandwich, but as usual, the community over at XDA Developers has stepped up to make it happen. Despite HTC claiming various technical issues as barriers for the upgrade, Team Blackout's Android 4.0.4 build (aka Blackout ICS Incredible) is said to work perfectly on the device. The complete ROM is based on an ICS build for the Incredible S, and it requires you sacrifice your data in a full wipe before you can enjoy that Sense 3.6 UI. However, if you've got the knowledge to take advantage of this gift, you probably know how to backup all those bytes anyway. Hungry? Then head over to the source for your desirable dessert.Filed under: Cellphones, SoftwareCustom ROM brings Android 4.0.4 to the Desire HD, does what HTC wouldn't originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Aug 2012 10:54:00 EDT.
