IHS iSuppli: Apple iPad takes 69.6 percent of tablet brand market share in Q2, reader tablets take a bruising
An earlier portrait of the second quarter's tablet market share made it quite clear that the iPad was on a rebound, if it was ever in a slump to start with. All those numbers focused on platforms and not brands, however -- we didn't know how the individual makers were doing. If IHS iSuppli's figures are on the ball, there's even more of a discrepancy if you break down the period's results by manufacturer. The iPad staked out 69.6 percent of tablet shipments in the spring. That wasn't just an 11-point jump over a year earlier; it was a level of share Apple hasn't had since the Motorola Xoom was just cutting its teeth early in 2011. As for the rest? Transformer Pads kept ASUS growing, but it's not a pretty sight if you're making an Android reader tablet; both Amazon and Barnes & Noble shed roughly a point and a half each, which is no small amount relative to their size. Samsung also lost share by this after its deliveries of Galaxy Tabs mostly stayed flat. We'd add that there's some wiggle room as to real performance knowing that units shipped and sold aren't always one and the same. Most of these companies are leaving clues regarding upcoming tablet refreshes that might level the playing field, some not so subtle, but it's currently Apple's game to win.Filed under: Tablet PCsIHS iSuppli: Apple iPad takes 69.6 percent of tablet brand market share in Q2, reader tablets take a bruising originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 17:14:00 EDT. Filed under: Hybrid, Mercedes BenzMercedes-Benz has added the E400 Hybrid to the E-Class range for the 2013 model year, and we've now learned that the gasoline-electric sedan will be priced from $55,800, (*) not including $905 for destination. The E400 Hybrid originally debuted at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year. The E400 Hybrid comes packed with a 3.0-liter V6 direct-injection engine good for 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, supplemented by an electric motor (rated at 27 hp and 207 lb-ft). Official fuel economy ratings haven't been released for the E400 Hybrid just yet, but preliminary data (and the big ol' number on the side of the car) suggests 24 miles per gallon in the city, 32 mpg highway and 27 mpg combined. Hybrids not your thing? Never fear - Mercedes-Benz will also sell you the less-expensive E350 Bluetec ($52,200, not including destination) that packs a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V6 good for 210 hp and 410 lb-ft. The 2013 E350 Bluetec hasn't officially been certified by the EPA just yet, but the 2012 model was rated at 21 mpg city and 32 mpg highway (25 combined), and we don't expect those numbers to change.2013 Mercedes-Benz E400 Hybrid priced from $55,800* originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 16:17:00 EST. LG confirms Optimus 2X will indeed be updated to ICS... in Korea, at least
The LG Optimus 2X has been no stranger to controversy when it comes to firmware upgrades (for some variants, at least) so we didn't blink an eye when we heard LG Canada's proclamation that the dual-core device would forever remain on Gingerbread -- despite the company's previous statements to the contrary. It turns out, however, that the future of the Optimus 2X may not be all doom and gloom -- for Korea, anyway. The company's Korean branch sent out a tweet mentioning that the phone will indeed be updated to Android 4.0. Though the tweet itself appeared to be country-agnostic, we have reached out to LG reps and received official confirmation, telling us "for now, that tweet only refers to Korean availability." We still haven't heard any news about ICS coming to any of its global counterparts, but we imagine the healthy dev community will likely cook up a few happy options in a worst-case scenario.Filed under: Cellphones, SoftwareLG confirms Optimus 2X will indeed be updated to ICS... in Korea, at least originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 16:53:00 EDT. Giada intros i35G mini PC with Intel's Cedar Trail, NVIDIA GT 610 graphics
It's only been a little over a month since Giada first introduced that itty-bitty, Ivy Bridge-loaded i53 mini PC, but the outfit wants to have something for everyone and is now announcing a lesser-specced i35G series. Although not as powerful as its i53 brethren, the i35G's got some nice attributes of its own, including -- you guessed it -- Intel's Cedar Trail CPU, a hot-off-the-press GeForce GT 610 GPU and 2GB of RAM with the base model (up to 4GB) -- not to mention an all-in-one card reader, five USB 2.0 ports plus VGA, HDMI ports. Additionally, the standard unit comes with a 320GB hard drive, though if you're looking for a quick boost, it's easily upgradable to some solid-state drive goodness. Giada's letting go of its petite i35G starting at $274, but you'll have to call North America home, as it's only available in Canada and the States.Continue reading Giada intros i35G mini PC with Intel's Cedar Trail, NVIDIA GT 610 graphicsFiled under: Desktops, Misc. Ultrasone IQ unveiled as company's first in-ear headphones, hybrid drivers in tow
Heads up, audiophiles! Here's a little gem we spotted at the Hong Kong High-End Audio Visual Show over the weekend. Dubbed the Ultrasone IQ, these turn out to be the German company's first ever in-ear headphones, and luckily they're more than just ordinary buds. You see, packed within each aluminum alloy capsule is a combo of a traditional dynamic driver and a balanced armature driver, with the former taking care of the bass plus lower-mids, and the latter covering the rest -- specific frequency response to be confirmed at a later date. The technology isn't new, of course, but it's all about the fine-tuning to match the price tag -- we've been told to expect around HK$6,000, which is about US$770. This author was fortunate enough to try the pictured prototype at the event and was left impressed by its definition, but the final product will apparently perform even better when it hits the market in late September. Just to seal the deal for hardcore users, these buds feature MMCX connectors, meaning you can swap the original cables with the bundled headset kit (for iPhone and major Android devices) or other third-party wires. Launched alongside the IQ were the Signature DJ and two new additions to the Edition 8 line: Romeo and Juliet, which seem like a nice idea for audiophilic couples. Alas, details are light here in terms of prices and availability, but at least Romeo and Juliet will perform identically as the original Edition 8. The new DJ cups, on the other hand, await official specifications. For now, hit the gallery to take a look at all of Ultrasone's new offerings. Double Robotics gives your iPad wheels, brings telepresence to the masses (video)
Walking iPads aside, usable telepresence remains one of geekdom's purest goals. Being able to attend meetings, without the minor irritation of actually being there, has been a motivator for professionals and hobbyists alike. Double Robotics, on the other hand, feel that they've spotted an opportunity. By leveraging the computing power of the iPad, coupled with some smart design, it has created the "Double," a self-balancing motorized iPad stand. You'll need a pair of Apple slates to get going, one to peer into and use as a controller (via an app), another to project your face, and act as the seeing eye (via the front-facing camera). Best of all, this is much more affordable than many existing options, rolling in at $1,999 if you pre-order ($2,499 otherwise), shipping in December -- iPads not included. Facetime on wheels? Why didn't we think of that? Roll past the break for the video.Continue reading Double Robotics gives your iPad wheels, brings telepresence to the masses (video)Filed under: Robots, ScienceDouble Robotics gives your iPad wheels, brings telepresence to the masses (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 15:42:00 EDT. OrderAhead Nabs $2.3M From Adam D'Angelo, Matrix, Eric Schmidt For Ordering On The Go
You know what's not fun? Ordering takeout from your favorite restaurant over the phone -- actually planning ahead instead of just showing up -- only to wait in line like a schlub once you get there to pick up your order and pay. If you're anything like me, this has happened enough times that you've thought about starting a Facebook support group, or at least made a strongly-worded mental note of it. Well, luckily OrderAhead feels your pain, which is why it developed a free app (for the iPhone) to allow anyone and everyone to quickly order takeout from local merchants and avoid those pesky lines. Since graduating from Y Combinator last summer, the startup has largely flown under the radar. But today, along with officially making its presence known, OrderAhead is revealing that it has raised $2.3 million in seed funding earlier this year from a bevy of recognizable names, including Facebook Co-founder Adam D'Angelo, Matrix Partners, Menlo Ventures, Ignition Partners, Y Combinator and YC partners (Harj Taggar, Alexis Ohanian, Garry Tan, Paul Bucheit, Geoff Ralston), CrunchFund, SV Angel, Eric Schmidt (via Innovation Endavors) and, last but not least, Bay Area crepe chain, Crepevine.

Toshiba backs out of Windows RT devices on launch, pins it on part delays

Toshiba backs out of Windows RT devices on launch, pins it on part delays
Microsoft was quick to champion its new Windows RT partners, but it'll have to count one out. Toshiba has opted not to join the ARM crowd at first and will limit itself to Intel-based Windows 8 systems, at least in the early days. The abstinence isn't coming from any misgivings about the platform -- there are unnamed "delayed components" that would make it "impossible" to put out a Windows RT system on time, Toshiba's Eric Paulsen says. There's no mention of when the company might dip its toe in the pool later on, and we're not getting any reassuring signs that it's anytime soon given that the firm is only "monitoring market conditions" rather than committing to a plan. Although Toshiba isn't hurting for tablets given an abundance of Excite devices, the absence narrows an ecosystem that Microsoft was no doubt hoping would grow wider.Filed under: Tablet PCsToshiba backs out of Windows RT devices on launch, pins it on part delays originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 15:00:00 EDT. New Fisker CEO, Tony Posawatz, was lead director of Chevy Volt
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Chevrolet, GM, FiskerTony Posawatz is a familiar face in the green car world, having played a prominent and public role in the development of the Chevrolet Volt as the vehicle line director for GM's plug-in hybrid. Today, we learn that Posawatz - who retired from GM last month - will be spending even more time with an extended range powertrain vehicle, the Fisker Karma. This is because Posawatz was just named the new CEO of Fisker, replacing Tom LaSorda, who has only been in that position since February. Apparently, the rumor that Posawatz was "stepping down to spend more time with his family," wasn't exactly true. In a statement, LaSorda said, "Tony is the perfect CEO for Fisker. He has been at the forefront of the industry's technological revolution and one of the few people in the world to bring an EV to mass production." Henrik Fisker, the company's executive chairman and co-founder, said Posawatz, "will ensure that Fisker is well positioned to maximize the potential of not only the Karma sedan, but also bring the Fisker Atlantic smoothly to market." Posawatz will have his hands full leading Fisker, given things like spontaneous vehicle fires, fallout from earlier battery issues and money flow. But nothing should be too difficult for the person who first came up with the term "range anxiety," right? In other Fisker news, the company said today it has added Joseph Chao as executive vice president and CEO of China and Asia and Alberto Gonzalez as vice president of manufacturing. Details below.Continue reading New Fisker CEO, Tony Posawatz, was lead director of Chevy VoltNew Fisker CEO, Tony Posawatz, was lead director of Chevy Volt originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 13:25:00 EST. Marvell PXA988, PXA986 chips support 3G for China, the world without reinventing the wheel (or phone)
Whenever we see a smartphone optimized for China Mobile's TD-SCDMA 3G, it usually represents one of two things: it's either a China-specific variant of a phone we already know, or it's a local-only model that's unlikely to ever travel abroad. Marvell has just unveiled a new mobile processor platform that could allow for a lot more globetrotting with those basic designs. The PXA988 is limited to China Mobile's technology for data, but its PXA986 doppelganger can fit the same slot to offer regular HSPA+ 3G without forcing phone makers back to the drawing board. Both run on a dual-core, 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A9 at their heart -- nothing exciting in mid-2012, although they're well-enough equipped to capture 1080p video and tout extras like NFC. Only test samples exist today, but there's a chance we'll soon see phone designs that are just as much at home in Berlin as they are in Beijing.Continue reading Marvell PXA988, PXA986 chips support 3G for China, the world without reinventing the wheel (or phone)Filed under: CellphonesMarvell PXA988, PXA986 chips support 3G for China, the world without reinventing the wheel (or phone) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 14:20:00 EDT. Microsoft just recently gave it's web-based email offering a sweeping overhaul, and it's now also done the same for its cloud-based storage service. As detailed in a typically extensive blog post, the company has today launched an all new as SkyDrive.com (rolling out over the next 24 hours), one that now defaults to a tile-based layout and boasts new features like instant search and a contextual toolbar. As the company notes, it's also designed with tablets in mind, in addition to desktop web browser. What's more, Microsoft has also rolled out updated SkyDrive apps for Windows and OS X, which promise faster uploads and other performance improvements, and it says it'll finally have an Android app in "just a few weeks." YC-Backed Kamcord Helps Record And Share Those Epic Mobile Gaming Moments
Mobile games have grown to the point where players can dive into an immersive world or rack up high scores in just a few minutes from any platform. But trying to share those standout moments with others can be problematic. Big numbers, virtual badges, and achievements all lack a sense of context, and a way for other people to know exactly how good you are. After all, what good is nabbing a high score when you can't show off how you nearly destroyed your fingers getting it? That's where YC-backed Kamcord comes in. The brainchild of MIT alumni Kevin Wang, Aditya Rathnam, and CEO Matt Zitzmann, Kamcord aims to help mobile gamers easily record and share their exploits via a free SDK available to iOS game developers.

Canon recalls 68,200 EOS Rebel T4i DSLRs, says rubber grips can lead to skin rash
We've covered our fair share of product recalls over the years, but this one almost certainly takes the cake when looking at pure zaniness. Canon has recalled its EOS Rebel T4i -- some 68,200 units -- "due to a risk of allergic reaction." You read that right. As the story goes, a chemical used in the camera's rubber grips "can result in a reaction that changes the grips from black to white and poses a risk of skin irritation to the consumer," and while the company has only received a single report of a consumer developing a "minor rash" after contact, that's obviously enough to issue to recall. It involves T4i units with a 12-digit serial number that contain a second digit that is a "3" or "4" and a sixth digit that is a "1." If that's you, you're advised to stop using the camera and ping Canon USA to have replacement rubber grips installed free of charge. Specifically, you can ring 855-902-3277 and be prepared to be placed on hold for the better part of your adult life.Filed under: Digital CamerasCanon recalls 68,200 EOS Rebel T4i DSLRs, says rubber grips can lead to skin rash originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 13:52:00 EDT. Wee Society, a new effort emerging from a small design and branding studio based in San Francisco, has just published its first app, a children's interactive book called Wee A B See. And it's the first of many products - not just apps - which this new company plans to produce. Now, you may not have heard of Office, as the studio is called, but you probably have come across their work. It's the team that brought you that new, simplified Google Chrome icon, for example, they also developed the Disney's Store's identity and brand, designed eBay's corporate site and shipping boxes, built the brand identity for now Facebook-owned Karma gifting app, and they've done work for some of the world's biggest brands, including Apple, Coca-Cola, P&G, Nike, Hasbro and others. They're even doing a little something for Facebook which they can't talk about.

We're still looking at PlayStation-certified devices here, but Sony's also announced that ASUS and Wikipad hardware will join the (pretty Sony-centric) line-up. Phones with dual displays have been done, and Sony's foldable Tablet P brought similar functionality to tablets with mixed results. It looks like the Japanese electronics giant isn't done with such devices, however, as it's just been granted a patent for a gadget that can fold on multiple axes. The patent in question describes a device constructed of two rectangular casings that can be "rotated relatively in one of a first rotation direction and a second rotation direction orthogonal to each other." Translation: a sort of next-gen Jacob's ladder with hinges that open up on both sides of a right angle, which would allow you to set screens side by side or on top of one another. Want to know more? Check out all the patent claims and drawings at the sources below.Sony patents a two-way folding device, wants you to have extra screen real estate where you need it originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 13:21:00 EDT. Sony's kicked off its Gamescom event in Germany by revealing a new deal for games playable on both the PS3 and its handheld relative, the PS Vita. According to Jim Ryan, president and CEO for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, you'll get both copies in the single package but there's no word on whether both, or one, will be digital download-only. We'll update this post when we hear more.Filed under: GamingPS Vita and PS3 cross-buy feature revealed: buy one copy, get the other free originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 13:16:00 EDT. Apple gets patent for in-cell touch display with impeccable timing

Apple gets patent for in-cell touch display with impeccable timing
So Apple could be working on an iPhone with a thinner display, you say. Look what we have here, possibly in the nick of time: it's a newly granted Apple patent for a screen with in-cell touch, where the LCD and touch recognition are integrated into one panel instead of stacking up in separate layers. Apple's implementation would slim things down by either having electrodes share duties, both driving the display and taking finger input, or stuffing two electrodes into each pixel to accomplish the same goal. The net effect isn't just one of squeezing a device into a thinner chassis; the company also envisions costs coming down by reducing the number of parts and streamlining the manufacturing process. As envisioned, the screen looks like an ideal fit for a significant revamp of Apple's mobile display technology, although we'd be careful about assuming that this or any in-cell touch implementation is a lock for potentially imminent iOS hardware. Apple first filed the patent in early June 2007, before the original iPhone had even marched into a retailer -- display technology has come a long way since then.Filed under: Cellphones, DisplaysApple gets patent for in-cell touch display with impeccable timing originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Aug 2012 12:55:00 EDT.
