Not surprisingly, Yelp is seeing a lot of growth on mobile. The company says that mobile apps are being used by 7.2 million unique devices every month, up from 6.3 million in the previous quarter. Stoppelman also said that apps currently account for 40 percent of all Yelp searches — making up the majority on weekends. |

Today, however, the spotlight's focusing on the rumored successor of that lovable Xperia S. According to the reliable folks over at ePrice, the upcoming Xperia SL has been tweaked in a couple of ways since its last showing; not only popping up in different (and more subtle) livery, but it's also received a decent speed bump with the alleged inclusion of a dual-core, 1.7GHz CPU -- which is slightly different than the 1.5GHz chip previously reported. Either way, this Xperia SL cup will remain half full for the time being, as other useful details like pricing and availability are still widely unknown. FDA approves Proteus Digital Health's e-pills for dose monitoring Posted: 01 Aug 2012 02:34 PM PDT FDA approves Proteus Digital Health's e-pills for dose monitoring ![]() FDA approves Proteus Digital Health's e-pills for dose monitoring An "ingestible sensor" doesn't sound like the tastiest of snacks, but soon it might be just what the doctor ordered. A tiny microchip which activates upon contact with stomach acid has recently been given the green light by health regulatory agencies in the US and Europe. When the sensor is swallowed, an external patch picks up its signal and shoots a message over to whoever it's supposed to. The technology is aimed at tackling an issue known in the healthcare biz as compliance -- or, following instructions. Correct timing and dose are important for many drugs, and lax schedules can be responsible for treatment failures or the development of nasty drug-resistant bugs. Although the necessary trials used placebo pills, one pharmaceutical heavyweight has already bagged a license to the technology for real-world applications. If the thought of passing microchips is troubling you more than the thought of eating them, no need to worry -- the kamikaze sensors dissolve in your stomach shortly after completing their mission.Continue reading FDA approves Proteus Digital Health's e-pills for dose monitoringFiled under: ScienceFDA approves Proteus Digital Health's e-pills for dose monitoring originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 17:04:00 EDT. Google begins shipping free Nexus Q pre-orders Posted: 01 Aug 2012 01:59 PM PDT Google begins shipping free Nexus Q pre-orders ![]() Google begins shipping free Nexus Q pre-orders Just yesterday, Google sent out a note letting Nexus Q pre-orderers know that the strange little streaming device would be delayed, so the company could "work on making it even better." That note came with some rosy news, however, informing early adopters that they would be receiving the device for free, so they could join in on the extended beta testing. Today we got a note from one of the aforementioned pre-orderers informing him that the device had shipped. We reached out to Google, who confirmed the shipments. That's what some hybrid-auto enthusiasts may be asking after Lexus' unveiling of its new luxury lines of vehicles in San Francisco on Monday. Like other members of Toyota's luxury marque, the 2013 LS 600h L gets a slightly revised exterior. It also benefits from a few changes you can't see from outside, including a more rigid body thanks to chassis reinforcements and the debut of a full-time all-wheel drive system on the hybrid. Still, many of the specs replicate those from 2012. The car will still have 438 horsepower, will still go from to 60 miles per hour in about five and a half seconds and, most importantly, will still get exactly the same fuel economy as last year: just 20 miles per gallon combined, 19 in the city and 23 on the highway. Those are Toyota's estimates, anyway, and the company adds that, "Actual mileage will vary." As for sticker price? No word on how it's going to change from the 2012's MSRP of $112,750. Here's guessing that it's not going down.Continue reading 2013 Lexus LS 600h L gets new look, same fuel economy2013 Lexus LS 600h L gets new look, same fuel economy originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 16:03:00 EST. There's now a better way to rub it in everyone's noses than snarky message board posts: Google has just teamed with the NFL to integrate Google+ Hangouts across the league's fantasy football pages. The multi-person video chat is now just a step away, whether you're trading players or checking the latest results. Google is even bending the rules slightly to allow for a full league's dozen players in one session, instead of the usual 10, and will help host talks between commentators and league participants. Hangouts at the NFL pages are already up and running -- that gives us just enough weeks to hem and haw over linebacker choices before the real NFL's schedule gets going.Filed under: InternetNFL adds Google+ Hangouts to fantasy football leagues for extra-personal trash talking originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 16:18:00 EDT. MakerBot Replicator impressions: the dawning of 3D printers in every home? Posted: 01 Aug 2012 01:23 PM PDT MakerBot Replicator impressions: the dawning of 3D printers in every home? ![]() MakerBot Replicator impressions: the dawning of 3D printers in every home? There's something universally appealing about the concept of a 3D printer -- that concept being an automated system capable of turning computer code into real-world objects. I found myself forced to give a brief overview of the technology to AOL employees in our shared New York City office space after a particularly noisy initial run of MakerBot's Replicator. Reactions to such explanations tend to follow a fairly standard arc, beginning with wide-eyed wonder as one attempts to wrap their brain around the idea, followed almost immediately by a list of things they'd love to print out, given a chance. This is usually coupled with questions like "can it print food?" and "can I print a car?" Both of which speak to that larger, vitally important question: "can I print anything useful?" This, in turn, speaks to another important concern: "how long until it pays for itself?" When we received an unexpected package from the folks at MakerBot last Friday, we realized it would afford us the opportunity to field some of these questions. Though, before opening the thing, we can tell you pretty confidently that, if you're looking for something that will "pay for itself," that answer won't come in a giant cardboard box with a MakerBot logo on the side. Some key questions are a little less straightforward, however, like whether or not this technology is ready for consumers -- or if it's still just the territory of enthusiasts.Gallery: MakerBot Replicator impressions: the dawning of 3D printers in every home?Continue reading MakerBot Replicator impressions: the dawning of 3D printers in every home?Filed under: Peripherals, RobotsMakerBot Replicator impressions: the dawning of 3D printers in every home? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 16:00:00 EDT. The camera is "in the final stages of Thunderbolt certification and internal testing" and manufacturing will follow as soon as that's done -- probably in the second week of August, according to the company. It will still hit the market with the $2,995 price tag, Canon or Zeiss lense mounts, Super 16 sensor and built-in SSD recorder intact. In more positive news, the company has identified the cause of aliasing noticed by some viewers and blames it on the workflow used. It's posted a few new videos to back up the claim, which can be viewed at the source link below. Considering the company might soon have nearly identical competition, it's probably best to work out any bugs before shipping a boatload out to finicky cinema clients. In reality, it's been just over seven months and we've already moved onto the smartphone's quad-core sequel, aptly named the Meizu MX 4-core. Not only is it easy to confuse the two phones by name, but good luck trying to tell which one is which. Indeed, the two handsets are quite similar both inside and out, with the exception of some improvements in a couple rows on the 'ol spec sheet. The biggest surprise isn't necessarily the speed with which the company cranked out a second MX, and it's not even the reasonable price (HK$3,099, or US$400, or the 32GB version, and HK$4,099 / US$530 for the 64GB). Nope, it's seeing Meizu, a manufacturer known for its copycat products, evolving into a relevant player beyond its native China. So how does this latest effort stack up? Quirky helmet concept gives new meaning to headlight Posted: 01 Aug 2012 12:47 PM PDT Quirky helmet concept gives new meaning to headlight ![]() Quirky helmet concept gives new meaning to headlight As a general rule, it's usually never a good look to strap things to your noggin. That said, we're willing to let this particular Quirky-made concept slide for two reasons: it could very well save your motorcycle-loving life and it won't muck up your head gear. The in-development helmet light, which goes by the plain though apt Signal moniker, makes use of an elastic fiber-optic fabric known as Lumigram, thus avoiding the need for messy adhesives and, more importantly, keeping your biker fashion in check. So, how exactly does it help steer you out of harm's way? Well, by communicating wirelessly via RFID, the attachment doubles up on signaling safety, mimicking your ride's real-time responses for brake lights and turn signals. According to its creators, this hide-saving accessory could be "the coolest thing to happen to motorcycles since Easy Rider." We're not sure we (nor Jack Nicholson, for that matter) agree with that, but it should keep your body and bike free from the crush of neighboring wheels.Filed under: Misc. Middle Tennessee State working on $3,000 after-market plug-in hybrid kit Posted: 01 Aug 2012 11:32 AM PDT Middle Tennessee State working on $3,000 after-market plug-in hybrid kit ![]() Middle Tennessee State working on $3,000 after-market plug-in hybrid kit Filed under: Emerging Technologies, EV/Plug-in, Green Culture A plug-in hybrid kit that even a starving college student may be able to afford? That might be a stretch, but a Middle Tennessee State University professor and a group of students are developing a PHEV kit that may ultimately cost far less than the premium some people are paying for electric-drive vehicles. Dr. Charles Perry, a former IBM employee who's leading the effort, is working with nine students to create a plug-in hybrid kit that could cost as little as $3,000, once production is up and running. For that kind of scratch, buyers would get a lot of bang for their buck, as fuel economy could jump by as much as 100 percent. The system, which is being tested on a 1994 Honda station wagon, involves a trunk-mounted lithium-ion battery feeding an electric motor that powers the rear wheels of the car, giving the gas engine, which powers the front wheels, a break. The group, which has been working on the project for about four years, put together a six-minute video outlining the effort and you can watch it below. Perry and the students are pitching the idea to companies and hope to get funding to make what they hope to be a production version of the kit. In 2009, Perry won a green energy competition from the Tennessee Technology Development Corp., which came with a $50,000 grant along with a matching investment to push the projecting forward. Perry isn't alone in trying to make plug-in hybrid kits work. Early last year, Washington-based Vista Engineering Technologies started pitching a conversion kit that would be able to give any vehicle a 30-mile electric-only range for less than $10,000.Continue reading Middle Tennessee State working on $3,000 after-market plug-in hybrid kitMiddle Tennessee State working on $3,000 after-market plug-in hybrid kit originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 13:47:00 EST. Now you'll be able to use any credit or debit card you wish, and take them with you from one device to the next. Early versions of the digital wallet used the phones secure local storage to protect your card info, now it's all in the cloud allowing you to sync your preferred payment method across multiple devices and keep track of both your online and in-store purchase's through Google's web Wallet. Perhaps most importantly though, Mountain View has upped the security ante, by allowing you to disable individual devices, should a tragedy befall your beloved Nexus. Following Blizzard and Valve anxieties, Minecraft developer Notch (the man on the left) is himself cautious about the shift to the Windows Store and the seeming discouragement of third-party outlets. Despite sharing an affinity with Microsoft for square-shaped worlds, he sees any further lockdown of Windows 8 as potentially "very very bad" for indie game developers and overall competition in the gaming business. Not that Notch is singling out the OS for concern: he's also maintaining his resistance to Valve's Steam and doesn't want the Portal creator to "rent games" instead of selling titles that buyers can keep forever. While Notch isn't adverse to producing games for closed systems when it's the only choice, he's joining a growing chorus of those worried that openness is on the endangered list.Filed under: Gaming, SoftwareMinecraft creator warns locked down Windows 8 could be 'very bad' for indies, stays wary of Steam too originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 14:16:00 EDT. Shipments in the PC sector, which in Canalys' book includes tablets, were higher than ever, totaling 108,708,780 units globally. iPad sales put Apple in the lead, with more than 21 million devices shipped (this figure also includes desktops and notebooks) in Q2, compared to just over 13 million during the year-ago quarter, representing a massive 59.6-percent year-over-year growth. HP, which led the way in Q1, has fallen to the second-place spot, with nearly 13.6 million shipments during the quarter ending yesterday, followed by Lenovo with about 13.2 million, Acer with nearly 10.7 million and Dell with roughly 9.7 computers sold. Manufacturers like ASUS and Samsung are represented in the substantial "others" category, which totals about 40.6 million devices. There's no question that the iPad is behind Apple earning the number-1 slot, and with the upcoming Windows 8 launch, those figures could shift drastically the next time around. Furthermore, the beat-inducing apparatus is also compatible with that rather popular djay application for iOS, making it easier to mix, scratch and blast all your favorite tunes in one place. Philips launched this Mini Hi-Fi add-on a while back, but today it's finally placing it up for grabs in the UK for a hefty £300, or about $470 if you're this side of the Atlantic. Getting Married? Wedding Party Collects Photos From Guests’ Phones To Create Bea... Posted: 01 Aug 2012 10:23 AM PDT Getting Married? Wedding Party Collects Photos From Guests' Phones To Create Beautiful Online Albums ![]() Getting Married? Wedding Party Collects Photos From Guests' Phones To Create Beautiful Online Albums Many of the startups targeting the weddings space today are focused on offering better services for the bride and/or the couple, but with a new mobile application called Wedding Party, that model has been flipped on its head. Wedding Party wants to offer a better wedding experience for the guests first, which then, in turn, will benefit the couple being married. The app offers a simple way to allow wedding guests participate in the creation of a digital wedding album by sharing photos, notes, and later on, videos. It's the modern-day equivalent of the guy running around with the video camera, bugging you to "say something nice about the couple." |
Mercedes planning SLS AMG E-Cell Roadster? Posted: 01 Aug 2012 10:23 AM PDT Mercedes planning SLS AMG E-Cell Roadster? ![]() Mercedes planning SLS AMG E-Cell Roadster? Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Mercedes Benz If the rumors are to be believed, Mercedes-Benz is planning a roadster version for the SLS AMG E-Cell electric supercar. Dutch newspaper De Telegraph is reporting that Mercedes-Benz is seriously looking at an SLS E-Cell Roadster. Through the rough translation, we're able to determine the reporting says that following the roll-out of the SLS E-Cell, Mercedes-Benz will see how the fully-electric gullwing sells and then make a decision. "We will see how great the demand becomes," said an undisclosed Mercedes-Benz representative, "We currently have no idea how many people are actually interested." To refresh your memory, the SLS E-Cell uses four electric motors to generate a combined 526 horsepower and 649 pound feet of torque. With so much torque available from zero rpms, it should achieve a 0-60 time of four seconds. The SLS E-Cell obviously lacks the standard car's big 6.3-liter V8 up front, and its new powertrain requires a completely different front axle and reworked front aerodynamics. The all-electric powerplant also gets some range-extending assistance from the Mercedes F1 team and its kinetic energy recovery system. We're not sure if the production SLS E-Cell Roadster will come in the same AMG Luminetric Mango as the auto show darling seen above, but we are sure someone will ask for it.Mercedes planning SLS AMG E-Cell Roadster? originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 12:01:00 EST. ComScore: Android back above 51 percent of US share, iOS still growing briskly Posted: 01 Aug 2012 10:23 AM PDT ComScore: Android back above 51 percent of US share, iOS still growing briskly ![]() ComScore: Android back above 51 percent of US share, iOS still growing briskly We're starting to see a distinct shift in US smartphone market share that leaves Android having to share the spotlight. ComScore's results for this past June have Google hitting a new high of 51.6 percent share, which still gives it something to crow about -- that's both a small increase over a month earlier and a return to the 51 percent mark. However, Android is still competing with an iOS platform that's been growing at a healthy rate, reaching 32.4 percent of the American space. The fuel for both sides comes from an all too familiar decline in BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows share. Samsung is still in the top spot as far as manufacturers, although it's shrinking where Apple and HTC are on the way up. We'll be looking to see how much the Galaxy S III affects the numbers during the summer, but less patient observers can get the manufacturer results after the break and the full scoop on current market share at the source.Continue reading ComScore: Android back above 51 percent of US share, iOS still growing brisklyFiled under: CellphonesComScore: Android back above 51 percent of US share, iOS still growing briskly originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 12:41:00 EDT.
