AMC to live stream Breaking Bad season premiere on its site, Dish customers rejoice
Yes! Good news are in for those of you who were affected by the ongoing kerfuffle between Dish and AMC: the TV network just announced it'll be live streaming the return of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman on its website. As you're likely aware, this announcement comes shortly after Dish Network revealed it was dropping the home of Breaking Bad and Mad Men from its lineup, after both parties couldn't reach a deal to keep the channel in place -- if there ever was one on the table to begin with. Nevertheless, AMC's taken it to the interwebs to stand its ground, and has rolled out a page inviting Dish customers to sign up for the free live stream of the season premiere this Sunday. Notably, TechCrunch reports an AMC rep told the site that "there's no real way for the network to verify that viewers are actually Dish subscribers," which pretty much opens the doors to anyone wanting to join the Season Five fun. The link to the nice streaming gesture is down below, so give it a bookmark if you're planning on tuning in.Filed under: Home Entertainment, InternetAMC to live stream Breaking Bad season premiere on its site, Dish customers rejoice originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 16:37:00 EDT. Sprint Epic 4G Touch and US Cellular Galaxy S II ICS updates are official, start rolling out today
Just as the leak last night indicated, Samsung is finally ready to deliver Ice Cream Sandwich to Sprint's Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. Samsung also announced today that US Cellular's similar but WiMAX-less SCH-R760 Galaxy S II is getting the same FF18 update as well. The changelogs are available at the source links below, interestingly Android Beam is mentioned since these devices lack NFC, it's hard to see how that could be on the list. US Cellular users can download and install the update right now using a SimpleDL tool on a Windows PC, however unfortunately there's no support for any other operating systems at this time. On Sprint the update is coming out OTA and will slowly arrive on devices over the next few days, but if you're impatient then we'd keep an eye on the thread at XDA Developers for reports on how well it works as well as some sideloaded workarounds.Filed under: CellphonesSprint Epic 4G Touch and US Cellular Galaxy S II ICS updates are official, start rolling out today originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 16:09:00 EDT. Android And iOS Still Lead In Smartphone Market Share, But The Race For Third Rages On
Nielsen released another of their periodic looks at the U.S. smartphone market today, and aside from the revelation that two-thirds of U.S. phone purchasers went for smartphones in Q2 2012, the results are as you'd expect. Android still leads the pack in terms of pure penetration -- as of this past June, it accounts for 51.8% of smartphones in use (up from 50.4% in Q1 2012) with Apple's iOS right behind it at 34%. Don't feel too bad for Apple though, as they still have the highest manufacturer share by far (34% in Q2), with Samsung at a distant second.

Carriers' Data Caps May Help Mobile Live TV Efforts Gain Interest
Dyle Mobile TV - remember this? That's the consumer-facing brand for a new mobile TV service from Mobile Content Venture (MCV), a group of broadcasters that includes FOX, NBC, ION Television, Bahakel, Univision, Telemundo, and Pearl LLC (Pearl is: Belo Corp., Cox Media Group, E.W. Scripps Co., Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television Inc., Media General Inc., Meredith Corp., Post-Newsweek Stations Inc. and Raycom Media). Earlier this year, the company promised the first Dyle Mobile TV handset would arrive on MetroPCS sometime in 2012. That's still in the works, if you're curious. Now the company is attempting to drum up consumer interest with the results of a new survey indicating consumer desire for such a service. In its "Dyle Mobile TV report" released this month, the company tapped a third party research firm to poll a representative sample of 510 U.S. consumers, ages 18-54 to find out how they watch TV and video, and more importantly, whether they would be interested in a live, mobile TV service on their handset. And surprise, surprise, survey says yes. But maybe for once, survey isn't lying?

FedEx expands Nissan e-van testing to Yokohama
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, Asia, Japan, USA FedEx will expand testing of the all-electric Nissan e-NV200 utility van to Japan's Yokohama region this month. The delivery company will test the Nissan for about a month. Nissan's already tested the EV in Japan with AEON Retail Co. The agreement marks a continuation of the road-testing partnership between FedEx and Nissan. FedEx started testing the electric concept version of Nissan's NV200 in Europe last fall, and expanded that effort to the U.K. in December. Nissan said in May that it's spending about $125 million upgrading its NV200 factory in Barcelona to accommodate production of the electric van, which is expected to start by spring 2014. The concept version uses the same powertrain as the Nissan Leaf. FedEx says it has about 43 permanent electric vehicles in the U.S. and Europe, in addition to more than 300 hybrid-electric delivery trucks. PSA: Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S III finally arriving in stores today
Despite some lucky folks claiming they'd received their GS3 order a bit earlier than expected (and others still patiently waiting for delivery), a good chunk of Big Red customers were eagerly looking forward to this past Tuesday, only to be brought down by an unexpected delay. Thankfully for them, though, it looks like today's the day the Verizon faithful can finally snag one of Samsung's chart-busting Galaxy S IIIs. As you may or may not know, the network's offering both the Marble White and Pebble Blue flavors of the device, with the 16GB running at $200 and the spacier 32GB selling for $250 -- naturally, this will require a fresh two-year deal. If all that sounds good, then head over to your nearest retail store to get in on the human-centric experience -- or you could always take the easier route and snatch one up straight from Verizon's site.Filed under: CellphonesPSA: Verizon's Samsung Galaxy S III finally arriving in stores today originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 15:42:00 EDT. Facebook redesigns Events listings, makes you an even bigger jerk for forgetting someone's birthday
Facebook, that tenuous connection between ourselves and the many casual acquaintances we've amassed over the years, has just rolled out a better way to keep track of events. Now it's possible to plan that witty annual birthday greeting months in advance, thanks to the new calendar and list views on the social network's Events page. You can also see suggested events and respond to invites from the comfort of the same page. The roll out follows the introduction the new Google+ Events page late last month, so now the two social networks can avoid awkwardly bumping into each other at parties.Filed under: InternetFacebook redesigns Events listings, makes you an even bigger jerk for forgetting someone's birthday originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 15:14:00 EDT. Yahoo confirms server breach, over 400k accounts compromised
Online account security breaches are seemingly commonplace these days -- just ask LinkedIn or Sony -- and now we can add Yahoo's name to the list of hacking victims. The company's confirmed that it had the usernames and passwords of over 400,000 accounts stolen from its servers earlier this week and the data was briefly posted online. The credentials have since been pulled from the web, but it turns out they weren't just for Yahoo accounts, as Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, Comcast, MSN, SBC Global, Verizon, BellSouth and Live.com login info was also pilfered and placed on display. The good news? Those responsible for the breach said (seen below) that the deed was done to simply show Yahoo the weaknesses in its software security. To wit: We hope that the parties responsible for managing the security of this subdomain will take this as a wake-up call, and not as a threat. There have been many security holes exploited in Web servers belonging to Yahoo Inc. that have caused far greater damage than our disclosure. Please do not take them lightly. The subdomain and vulnerable parameters have not been posted to avoid further damage. In response, Yahoo's saying that a fix for the vulnerability is in the works, but the investigation is ongoing and its system has yet to be fully secured. In the meantime, the company apologized for the breach and is advising users to change their passwords accordingly. You can read the official party line below. At Yahoo! we take security very seriously and invest heavily in protective measures to ensure the security of our users and their data across all our products. We confirm that an older file from Yahoo! Contributor Network (previously Associated Content) containing approximately 400,000 Yahoo! and other company users names and passwords was stolen yesterday, July 11. Of these, less than 5% of the Yahoo! accounts had valid passwords. We are fixing the vulnerability that led to the disclosure of this data, changing the passwords of the affected Yahoo! users and notifying the companies whose users accounts may have been compromised. We apologize to affected users. We encourage users to change their passwords on a regular basis and also familiarize themselves with our online safety tips at security.yahoo.com.Filed under: InternetYahoo confirms server breach, over 400k accounts compromised originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 14:41:00 EDT. When it comes to smartphone photography and videography, the Nokia 808 PureView is the truth. We glowed about the device's optical prowess in our in-depth review, but some of you still may not be convinced. For the skeptics still out there, we present you with Exhibit A: a clip from an 808 taken at a Foo Fighters cover-band gig. Cacophonous sound, constant lighting changes and front men with long flowing locks swaying to and fro... there's no doubt that a rock concert is the place where a video camera can prove its mettle. You don't have to take our word for it, though. Slide past the break, crank the video quality up to 1080p and watch Nokia's 41-megapixel machine do its thing.Continue reading Nokia 808 PureView flashes backstage pass, shows off video chopsFiled under: CellphonesNokia 808 PureView flashes backstage pass, shows off video chops originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 14:17:00 EDT. Plug-in sales in China will hit 152,000 by 2017, well behind government target
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy, China If there's one thing that's never lost in translation, it's the concept of status. That's what Pike Research deduced when it estimated that China's plug-in vehicle sales would fall far short of governmental goals during the next few years. In an upcoming report called "Electric Vehicles in China," Pike figures Chinese consumers will boost purchases of battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids by 60 percent a year through 2017, by which time more than 152,000 plug-ins will be sold in China annually. That's all fine and good, except the Chinese government was shooting for a half-million plug-ins being produced a year by 2015. By comparison, Pike Research estimated last week that cumulative U.S. plug-in sales would total about 410,000 units between 2011 and 2015. Part of the problem in China is the lack of infrastructure for widespread vehicle-charging opportunities and little standardization. But Pike Research says that, as more Chinese enter the middle class, many will choose to buy U.S.- and European-made sedans over Chinese EVs because they make better status symbols.Continue reading Plug-in sales in China will hit 152,000 by 2017, well behind government targetPlug-in sales in China will hit 152,000 by 2017, well behind government target originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 13:45:00 EST. YC-Backed Filepicker.io Goes Mobile, Brings Cloud Service Integration To iOS And Android Apps
Filepicker.io, a Y Combinator-backed company building tools that make it easier for developers to integrate access to cloud services within their applications, is now bringing its capabilities to mobile developers building apps on iOS and Android. With the new Filepicker.io Mobile Library, developers can quickly add integrations which let their apps connect to popular online services like Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, Facebook, Flickr, Evernote and more. For developers, the result of using the drop-in SDK is a sped up time to market, as Filepicker eliminates the need to code these type of integrations themselves. For end users of the apps, it means an easier way to move data between their favorite cloud services, without having to first save a copy locally to their device.

AUO, LG, Toshiba pay $571 million to settle LCD price fixing lawsuit, broken record keeps skipping
The way LCD price fixing lawsuits keep popping up and settling in short order, you'd think they were going out of style. The latest motley group to face a reckoning includes AU Optronics, LG and Toshiba, the combination of which has agreed to pay a total of $571 million to eight separate American states to either avoid the the legal wrath of a class action lawsuit or to pay an outstanding fine. Allegedly, the trio kept LCD prices artificially high between 1996 and 2006, hiking the prices of PCs and TVs in the process. There's a slight twist here: while keeping the display builders honest is the primary goal, the class action status will net some direct rewards for the public. Americans who claim to have been wronged in the scandal can get "at least" $25, which goes a lot further towards buying an LCD than it did six years ago.Filed under: Displays, Home EntertainmentAUO, LG, Toshiba pay $571 million to settle LCD price fixing lawsuit, broken record keeps skipping originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 13:55:00 EDT. HTC Vertex pops up in benchmarks, might bring a slice of One X muscle to tablets
HTC has been stoking the fires of anticipation for its return to tablets, and that small flame is quickly turning into a full conflagration. A slab nicknamed the Vertex has surfaced in benchmarks with a 1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 and a 1,280 x 752 usable resolution that's noticeably wider than the similarly Tegra 3-equipped One X's 720p display. Other than Android 4.0 (and a probably Sense 4.0), however, there's scant else to go on. The last murmurs of a Vertex from the fall had it carrying a rear 2-megapixel camera and a front 1.3-megapixel shooter, but it's been long enough now that we wouldn't count on that still being true -- or that the new benchmarks necessarily reflect what we might get. Let's just hope that the resulting device is more competitive than the pricey Jetstream.Filed under: Tablet PCsHTC Vertex pops up in benchmarks, might bring a slice of One X muscle to tablets originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 13:31:00 EDT. In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line. What a lovely set of speakers. Let me just dock my smartphone right th... Or perhaps you happen to own one of the thousands of devices not equipped with a proprietary Apple dock connector. Well, when it comes time to slide your Android or Windows Phone into place, the only sound you're likely to hear is the screech of a 30-pin plug scratching up the case. If the speaker rig packs Bluetooth, you can use that instead, but if you own one of many that don't, you'll probably want Pear. Drawing some name and design inspiration from an arguably more popular fruit, Pear brings Bluetooth connectivity to any dock connector-equipped speaker set, drawing power from the port so it can pair with virtually any smartphone or tablet, letting you play your tunes while keeping your handset in hand. It offers a range of 30 feet indoors or up to 75-feet outside (there's a video proving the feat at the source link below), and works with any apps and devices that offer Bluetooth output. The wireless gadget's designer is turning to Kickstarter to raise the funds necessary to launch Pear into production. The team has already developed a working prototype, so there's proof that you're not backing vaporware, and a $30 pledge can net you one of 250 early bird devices. After that initial run, you'll need to hand over 40 bucks (which also happens to be the expected retail place) for an arctic white or jet black Pear. The developers are hoping to raise $40,000, to cover their prior investments and push the device to the manufacturing stage (no, it won't be "made in the USA"), so if you want to see Pear pop up in a speaker dock near you, hit up our source link below to make your pledge. Sprint confirms HTC EVO 4G LTE in white, battle of exclusive phone colors rages on
Not to be outdone by that red Galaxy S III over at AT&T, Sprint has confirmed that its inadvertent ad posting wasn't just a fluke: it's bringing out a white version of the EVO 4G LTE. Strictly speaking, it's more of a aluminum-with-white-accents trim, but we'll let that slide given that the back and kickstand are now decidedly less smudge-prone. The white EVO will cost as much as that Galaxy S III variant (and the black EVO) at $200 on a contract. Sprint will start selling the white hue on July 15th -- and unlike AT&T, it should have phones on shelves rather than leave customers to online window shopping.Filed under: CellphonesSprint confirms HTC EVO 4G LTE in white, battle of exclusive phone colors rages on originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 12:27:00 EDT. Tennessee driver charged $58,000 for a tank of gas
Filed under: Etc. Imagine if it was full serve. One Tennessee woman found a bill for more than $58,000 for a tank of gas when a Mapco station owner - who may or may not have been trying to pay off his annual rent in one fell swoop - accidentally charged her a wee bit, according to Jalopnik. The exact amount was $58,278.35, and when almost $300 is a mere rounding error, you know this was a substantial mess-up. Jalopnik said the woman was refunded the money after Mapco and Suntrust Bank collaborated on fixing the snafu, and the woman received a $100 gift card from Mapco. The big question is if she's going to spend it on gas.Tennessee driver charged $58,000 for a tank of gas originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 12:02:00 EST. New 2012 iPhone body reportedly leaks, gives the glass front its time to shine
Remember that tall, mostly aluminum 2012 iPhone shell that appeared to have leaked? It's back. This time, KitGuru has unearthed what it claims is a "test sample" with the glass front panel roughly intact. We've seen the darker steel sides, aluminum back and new dock connector before, but the front gives us a much better sense of how the finished product (if real) will turn out. Sitting next to an iPhone 4S, it's suggested that the new model would stuff in that bigger screen more through a better use of the available area -- there's much less blank space than on the iPhones we've known since 2007. While we still don't know for sure if the design shown here is close to what will go hand-in-hand with iOS 6 in the fall, we're starting to see enough smoke that there's bound to be a fire nearby.Filed under: CellphonesNew 2012 iPhone body reportedly leaks, gives the glass front its time to shine originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 11:38:00 EDT.
