In less than 12 hours, Yves Behar's Android-based Ouya gaming console has reached its lofty funding goal of $950,000 on Kickstarter. To refresh your memory, the $99 system (which was only $95 for 1,000 swift early adopters) packs a Tegra 3 CPU, 8GB of storage, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a USB 2.0 port and an SD card slot -- that price also grants you a single controller with a touch sensor. Most notably, the system is aimed at being extremely developer-friendly, having open hardware and software with a push for free-to-play content. There's only about 5,000 units (out of 10,000) left at the $99 price, so feel free to check out our in-depth chat about Ouya with Behar himself here before you head over to Kickstarter. It appears that the traditional business model for gaming consoles just got rocked, and we can't wait to see the final results.Ouya's $99 Android-based gaming console meets Kickstarter goal: $950k in under 12 hours originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 16:59:00 EDT. Sony's upcoming ST26i smartphone could hit the market under Xperia J name Posted: 10 Jul 2012 02:17 PM PDT Sony's upcoming ST26i smartphone could hit the market under Xperia J name ![]() Sony's upcoming ST26i smartphone could hit the market under Xperia J name As is often the case, once you make your first unannounced, unexpected appearance, more are likely soon to follow -- and that's what's happening with Sony's forthcoming slab, the codenamed ST26i. Unlike last time we saw it in most of its glory, though, now it's only showing up in full text mode, revealing what could be its official moniker once it finally launches. According to a leaked doc acquired by the folks from Xperia Blog, Sony's purported 4-inch handset could snatch up the Xperia J nametag after making the transition from the more subtle and discrete ST26i title. Unfortunately, no other fruitful details were revealed in the process, but something tells us now it's only a matter of time before this ICS-filled Xperia J gets past its rumor phase and becomes something more concrete.Filed under: CellphonesSony's upcoming ST26i smartphone could hit the market under Xperia J name originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 16:54:00 EDT. Nexus Q hacked to launch apps, gets remote control web app Posted: 10 Jul 2012 01:44 PM PDT Nexus Q hacked to launch apps, gets remote control web app ![]() Nexus Q hacked to launch apps, gets remote control web app So, that first round of Nexus Q hacks? Impressive in terms of turn around time, not so much when functionality is your primary metric. But, a couple of weeks with the gorgeous, if questionably useful device, has started to produce some truly exciting results. The one that has our tinkering fingers itching most, puts a launcher and apps right at your finger tips... well, mouse pointer. The hack is hardly for the meek but, if you're already in possession of a Nexus Q, we're sure pushing a few .apks via adb won't unsettle you too much. The solution is far from perfect, but the Android foundation is able to recognize keyboards and mice it seems without issue. What really makes this a great hack, of course, is the ability to install apps like Netflix and Angry Birds finally freeing the Q from its arguably artificial shackles. If you're looking for something a little less involved (and decidedly less cool) there's also QRemote, an .apk you can push to your Q that lets you control it via a web browser. It doesn't expose any additional functionality, but at least it lets you skip tracks from your PC or other non-Jelly Bean device. You can see both in action after the break, and all the relevant files and accompanying instructions live at the source links.Continue reading Nexus Q hacked to launch apps, gets remote control web appFiled under: SoftwareNexus Q hacked to launch apps, gets remote control web app originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 16:37:00 EDT. Mountain View just added 20 US museums to its battery of 10,000 indoor schematics, including the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cincinnati Museum Center, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, 17 Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo in DC. You can find the plans for any venue by searching or hitting the current location button once you're on site, and Google plans to continue growing its collection, with SFMOMA, The Phillips Collection, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans set to join soon. ZF boss says transmission gear count one-upsmanship nearing end Posted: 10 Jul 2012 01:10 PM PDT ZF boss says transmission gear count one-upsmanship nearing end ![]() ZF boss says transmission gear count one-upsmanship nearing end Filed under: Emerging Technologies, Etc., MPG Remember the Powerglide? An automatic with two forward speeds, it's almost inconceivable today that such a transmission was ever state of the art. Why, we've heard plenty of grumbling from the peanut gallery about Honda and its continued widespread use of a five-speed automatic when most of the rest of the world is offering six speeds. And then there are those carmakers engaging in the mine-is-bigger-than-yours battle of transmissions that resulted in eight-speed automatics in cars like the Chrysler 300 and Hyundai Genesis pictured above. German transmission supplier ZF has a nine-speed automatic that will be introduced next year, and reports have said Hyundai is looking to pack ten forward gears into a forthcoming gearbox. What's next? Cars with as many gears as mountain bikes? That's unlikely, says ZF North American president Julio Caspari, who tells Automotive News that the gear race is "close to the limit." AN says Caspari thinks marketing may be a bigger factor than engineering when it comes to developing transmissions with additional gears, citing just an 11-percent difference between the best transmissions today and a theoretically perfect unit. Caspari questions the cost-effectiveness of building a so-called "perfect" transmission, saying that further friction reduction would require expensive materials, like ceramic ball bearings.ZF boss says transmission gear count one-upsmanship nearing end originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 15:58:00 EST. Fortunately for us (and you), though, a recently leaked document's giving us an early peek of what we can expect from the manufacturer as it tries to re-invade living rooms all over the globe. According to the revealing docs, Philips will be adding the 9707 and 9607 Smart TVs to its Series 9 repertoire, offering viewers a choice between a relatively large 46-inch or a more colossal 60-incher -- both reportedly "very thin." Additionally, the intelligent couple's said to be loaded with 3D Max features, a 1200Hz Perfect Motion Rate system, and both are expected to be powered by the outfit's Perfect Pixel HD processing technology. Needless to say, given its Smart TV status, it's safe to say it'll come with the usual WiFi capabilities as well as a number of apps to pick from. Just days after Twitter 4.3 had its details prematurely spilled all over the Internet, it's now raring to go for both Android (as version 3.3) and iOS users. Like we'd seen in early release notes, its focus is on expanding tweets to provide a glimpse at content when linking beyond just photos. Along with showing snippets from news outlets such as C-SPAN, Twitter's app now teases content from Etsy, Kickstarter and Vimeo, among others -- just in case you'd like to know whether that upcoming game console is worth funding at a glance. Notifications are getting their own promised boost and can send an alert whenever certain Twitter accounts post any kind of update. The improved search autocomplete shows its face as well, and iOS users get a more advanced layout for tracking hashtags during live events. Users with other smartphone platforms will have to wait for the 4.3 feature set to filter through to their devices, but if you're of an Apple or Google bent, one of Twitter's bigger updates of recent memory is already headed your way.Filed under: CellphonesTwitter for Android, iOS expands those Kickstarter tweets, becomes sensitive to our notification needs originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 15:31:00 EDT. Apple granted patent for accelerometer-aided theft-detection system Posted: 10 Jul 2012 01:10 PM PDT Apple granted patent for accelerometer-aided theft-detection system ![]() Apple granted patent for accelerometer-aided theft-detection system Despite the added risk brought on by Apple's Find My iPhone feature, the iOS handset remains a frequent target for smartphone thieves, thanks to the device's resale value and compatibility with networks around the world. There's not much you can do to deter sticky fingers short of keeping your iPhone or MacBook in view at all times, but the issue does appear to have crossed the desks of Apple's design team, which was just granted patent number 8,217,792 for a sophisticated anti-theft scheme. The acceleration-based system would detect a "known theft condition" based on acceleration characteristics, sounding an alarm and disabling the device. The smartphone or laptop would ignore vibrations from passing cars or those caused by items being dropped onto a nearby surface, instead focusing on undisclosed scenarios that likely involve direct movement. The device owner would use a GUI to configure and disable the system, at which point the handset or computer would return to its pre-disturbed mode. Overall, it sounds like a fairly straightforward hardware/software solution, with the added benefit of a technique to filter out regular motion in an attempt to reduce the number of false alarms. He's starting a new company called Phoenix Guild and has pocketed $1.1 million from YouWeb, Accel Partners, and General Catalyst Partners. The goal is to be a the "Blizzard of the post-PC era." After months of playing video games and traveling, he decided to have another go at it. "I knew that I wanted to do another gaming company," he said. "So I took a nice, deep breath and did it. I love making games." He added, "I'm a core gamer and it's just weird to me that I didn't find much on my iPad to play. Early on, it became apparent that there was a lot of action in free-to-play Farmville-style games. So there are still a lot of fairly low fidelity titles. We want something that's more like what you would see on consoles and PCs but re-imagined and built with modern monetization mechanics." |

RIM CEO hints at future BBM video chat feature Posted: 10 Jul 2012 12:02 PM PDT RIM CEO hints at future BBM video chat feature ![]() RIM CEO hints at future BBM video chat feature During today's shareholder meeting RIM CEO Thorsten Heins hinted that BBM, the companies celebrated group messaging service, might be getting some significant upgrades with the debut of BB10. In particular, the words "video chat" were tossed out as an example of how it planned to keep pace with the evolving mobile landscape. In response to a shareholder question, Heins said: "BBM is a very, strong platform... With upgrading it into a new experience, think about adding features on BB10 such as video chat, for example, within BBM. There's many other features to come with BB10 that will really level this BBM experience... which will upgrade that experience to a whole new social networking experience based on BBM... we want to use this to build a BlackBerry-driven social networking platform." So, does that mean BlackBerry is getting ready to take on Skype and Google? Perhaps. It would certainly make sense, but we'd stop short calling it a sure shot. What is clear, is that Heins really wants to push BlackBerry as the "social" platform focused on "experience" and seems content to let those other mobile OSes win the apps race.Filed under: SoftwareRIM CEO hints at future BBM video chat feature originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 14:46:00 EDT. We go hands-on with the waterproof Sony Xperia go (video) Posted: 10 Jul 2012 12:02 PM PDT We go hands-on with the waterproof Sony Xperia go (video) ![]() We go hands-on with the waterproof Sony Xperia go (video) The spiritual successor to last year's Xperia Active has been given a performance boost. Now packing a dual-core 1GHz processor, Sony hopes it'll manage to keep up with your surf-heavy lifestyle. At least, that's the explanation we reckon underpins the Xperia go's (or Xperia advance) certified dust and waterproofing. The phone is notch above the Xperia miro and Xperia tipo hardware wise, although the software remains less so, leaning on the increasingly creaky Android Gingerbread. (Sony says it's coming -- but it wont be available on launch.) Those curved corners and design lines make like a close relative to the Xperia S, P and U -- although it does lack that pervasive see-through bar. The increased processing power made web browsing a pretty painless affair, while wet finger tracking means you'll still be able to use the 3.5-inch touchscreen in the British Summer surf. The device will be priced around £250 (around $390) in the UK and is pegged to arrive over the next few months in white, black and yellow -- the latter has swiftly become our favorite. Take a visual tour of the yellow option in our gallery and hands-on video right after the break.Gallery: Sony Xperia go hands-onContinue reading We go hands-on with the waterproof Sony Xperia go (video)Filed under: CellphonesWe go hands-on with the waterproof Sony Xperia go (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 14:33:00 EDT. In a matter of weeks, we've spotted it while paying Mr. Blurrycam a visit, making a short stop at the FCC offices and, most recently, showing its phablet self in some purported T-Mo press shots. And although this time it isn't being as revealing as it has in previous occasions, it's yet another sign that its eventual entrance into T-Mobile's smartphone lineup is right around the corner. As a curious TmoNews reader found out, a quick, simple search for Galaxy Note within the Magenta site brings up a plethora of support documents for the device, including bits like software overview, call functionality, media, customization and specs. In case you were planning on snagging one of these once it launches, this might be a good way to become acquainted with the Samsung's jumbo slab.Filed under: CellphonesSamsung Galaxy Note documents pop up on T-Mobile's site, prepares for its grand entrance originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 14:21:00 EDT. With products from Acer, ASUS and Samsung keeping us plenty busy these last few months, Lenovo can hardly expect to stay relevant with the IdeaPad A1 and ThinkPad Tablet from 2011. So the IdeaTab S2109, a $350, 9.7-inch slate running Ice Cream Sandwich, comes in the nick of time. That's not to say we were surprised when the tablet launched in June. The S2109 made its grand debut at the FCC in March, and Lenovo teased its arrival with a YouTube video highlighting the 8.9mm-thick unibody shell and the 1,024 x 768 IPS LCD display. What the company wasn't so quick to point out, though, was that this device packs a TI OMAP 4430 CPU rather than the Tegra 3 processor that's quickly becoming the new tablet norm. So how does the performance stack up? Does this go toe to toe with all those other mid-range, 10-inch slates we've seen lately? Let's take a look. The company filed a report just before the weekend with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission indicating that it "expects to have approximately four to five months of cash to support its ongoing operations." The company says it spends between $18 million and $25 million per month in normal operational costs, and had about $68 million on hand at the end of May. In the same filing, A123 outlined plans to raise $39 million in an effort to remain afloat while it attempts to locate new business and shore up its finances. The company expects to turn a positive cash flow on a quarterly basis sometime in 2013. A123 has major contracts with automakers such as Fisker and BMW, the former of which was involved in a massive battery recall that is said to have cost A123 nearly $67 million. The upcoming Chevy Spark EV is also slated to use batteries from A123, assuming the company is able to survive its recent monetary blows.A123 running perilously low on cash originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 13:55:00 EST. Not that we're complaining: the same basic philosophy of getting an automatic, version-aware backup of all our personal files is convenient on any platform, especially when we can get a temporary internal safeguard while we're on vacation. The differences in platforms have equal rewards and drawbacks, however. File History provides more control over backups than its Apple counterpart, including frequency (finally!) and backup age, but it can't be used to backup whole apps like with a Time Machine drive. As always with these in-depth Windows 8 explorations, there's much more to see at the source, so click on through if you've ever been worried about deleting a file by accident.Filed under: Storage, SoftwareMicrosoft details Windows 8 File History, takes us through a Time Machine originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 13:29:00 EDT. Sony Xperia miro and Xperia tipo hands-on (video) Posted: 10 Jul 2012 10:23 AM PDT Sony Xperia miro and Xperia tipo hands-on (video) ![]() Sony Xperia miro and Xperia tipo hands-on (video) Sony's smallest additions to its smartphone roster won't launch until late August, but that didn't stop us dabbling with both handsets at Carphone Warehouse's Christmas (already?) show in London earlier today. The point of interest here is Ice Cream Sandwich, which arrives ready-to-go on both devices. The Xperia tipo will be arriving in Europe in its single SIM guise, with the dual-slot brother launching in Asia. It feels unerringly light in the hands at 3.5 ounces, while the 3.2-inch 480 x 320 TFT screen and 800MHz processor just about suffices for web browsing. There's a 3.2-megapixel camera on show on the back, with room for microSD storage expansion. The Xperia miro expands the touchscreen to 3.5 inches, and whacks the camera up to five megapixels, although you won't find the same Exmor R sensor that impressed on preceding devices. There's a nice curvature below the Android capacitive button row, although the backing is unfortunately plain on both color options we saw. In sort, both devices aren't going to wow you with their technical prowess -- although they might with their prices. The Xperia tipo is set to arrive in August priced below £100 (less than $155), while the slightly larger Xperia miro will arrive around a month later, priced around £150 ($232). Head on past the break for a video of both handsets in action.Gallery: Sony Xperia Miro hands-on Gallery: Sony Xperia Tipo hands-onContinue reading Sony Xperia miro and Xperia tipo hands-on (video)Filed under: CellphonesSony Xperia miro and Xperia tipo hands-on (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 13:14:00 EDT. DARPA Innovation House project wants teams to take imaging data, see the big pic... Posted: 10 Jul 2012 10:23 AM PDT DARPA Innovation House project wants teams to take imaging data, see the big picture ![]() DARPA Innovation House project wants teams to take imaging data, see the big picture Where are the bad guys? The military has eyes and ears everywhere these days, including drones large and tiny, satellites, radar imaging, LIDAR, infrared, thermal and even the enemy's own cellphones. The problem is how to take all that imaging and create a single picture of the environment. To that end, DARPA and George Mason University in Arlington have created the first Innovation House Project, which will put eight teams together for eight weeks in a "crucible-style" living environment to try to invent new ways of crunching the diverse sensor info. The military's research arm wants those units to think way off-piste "without fear of failure" to dream up solutions, and will have access to specialists and mentors from the military and academia. Unlike DARPA's usual challenges which have a grand prize, all teams accepted to the project will receive $30,000 in funding, but groups who go on to survive a four week cut will get an additional $20K. Proposals will be accepted up to July 31 (with no academic credentials needed), and the competition will begin in earnest on September 17. DARPA will get a license of any software created, allowing teams to hold the rights -- and hopes to continue the concept down the road, with new themes for team-based research on a tight deadline. So, if you're a data, imaging or "geospatial" whiz -- and don't mind being locked in a house and put under the brainstorming gun by DARPA -- check the PR for all the details.Continue reading DARPA Innovation House project wants teams to take imaging data, see the big pictureFiled under: Science, SoftwareDARPA Innovation House project wants teams to take imaging data, see the big picture originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 13:00:00 EDT. Steve Ballmer says Microsoft won't 'leave any space uncovered to Apple' Posted: 10 Jul 2012 09:48 AM PDT Steve Ballmer says Microsoft won't 'leave any space uncovered to Apple' ![]() Steve Ballmer says Microsoft won't 'leave any space uncovered to Apple' Steve Ballmer delivered a fair bit of news during his keynote at the company's Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto yesterday, but it looks like he saved some of his stronger words for an interview he gave to CRN following his talk. In it, he boldly said that "we are trying to make absolutely clear we are not going to leave any space uncovered to Apple," adding, "not the consumer cloud. Not hardware software innovation. We are not leaving any of that to Apple by itself. Not going to happen. Not on our watch." Asked if that included a change in its smartphone strategy, Ballmer said that "right now we are working real hard on the Surface. That's the focus. That's our core," although he did add a "look, we'll see what happens" before talking up its current partners. He also reaffirmed that Microsoft's retail stores and website will be the primary sources for Surface tablets initially, noting that the company's focus was on putting "one foot in front of the other" and getting it out the door, although he added that there's nothing stopping partners from ordering them from Microsoft.com and selling them.Filed under: Cellphones, Laptops, Tablet PCsSteve Ballmer says Microsoft won't 'leave any space uncovered to Apple' originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 12:39:00 EDT.
