Dracula, The Mummy and six other horror classics coming in a Blu-ray set October... Posted: 08 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT Dracula, The Mummy and six other horror classics coming in a Blu-ray set October 2nd (video) ![]() Dracula, The Mummy and six other horror classics coming in a Blu-ray set October 2nd (video) Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection will arrive on shelves October 2nd, and pack eight classic horror movies, all restored so they can be seen in the highest quality possible. Among the releases is Creature from the Black Lagoon restored for Blu-ray 3D (yes, like Dial M for Murder it was originally shot and released in 3D back in 1954), as well as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man and Phantom of the Opera. This is all a part of the ongoing Universal centennial celebration that's seeing its vaults unleash many of our favorites for the first time in high definition. After the break you can check out a featurette detailing the process undertaken to prep Dracula for Blu-ray release, as well as a press release with details on all of the flicks and which extras are included for each movie. Of course, the downside of a pack like this is that it's pricey -- the MSRP is $160, but it's available for preorder on Amazon currently priced at $112.Continue reading Dracula, The Mummy and six other horror classics coming in a Blu-ray set October 2nd (video)Dracula, The Mummy and six other horror classics coming in a Blu-ray set October 2nd (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 08 Jul 2012 17:47:00 EDT. Switched On: The Netbook Legacy Posted: 08 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT Switched On: The Netbook Legacy ![]() Switched On: The Netbook Legacy Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology. In describing Toshiba's decision to exit the U.S. netbook market, Engadget eulogized that it was "a sad day for those who like their computers tiny." Toshiba, a pioneer in the ultraportable market with the Libretto and Portege, produced what were among the best-regarded netbooks despite entering the market late. Indeed, even with the many aspersions cast upon netbooks by one-time friends (such as Dell and Toshiba) and perennial foes (such as Apple) alike, the accelerating exit of netbooks will leave a void in the marketplace. Many consumers saw the value of a 10-inch device with an integrated keyboard that can run Windows apps, available new in some configurations for $250 or less. And yet, even as major PC companies flee the field, accessory makers such as Logitech and Zagg, as well as overfunded Kickstarter projects such as Brydge or Incase's Origami case, present new ways to unite the iPad with its most conspicuous missing component: the keyboard. It seems incongruous that a 10-inch netbook is undesirable whereas a 10-inch tablet paired with a keyboard for which it is not optimized is. And most keyboards for the iPad use Bluetooth, the use of which is verboten on flights (even as WiFi has been approved).Continue reading Switched On: The Netbook LegacySwitched On: The Netbook Legacy originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 08 Jul 2012 17:30:00 EDT. HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE Review: Solid Little Phone, Awfully Big Name Posted: 08 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE Review: Solid Little Phone, Awfully Big Name ![]() HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE Review: Solid Little Phone, Awfully Big Name Does bigger always mean better? It depends on who you ask of course, but more than a few major smartphone manufacturers would probably say yes. Even the notorious hold-outs at Apple are rumored to be working on something a bit larger than their usual — in short, the race to be the biggest doesn't show any signs of letting up. In a market where big smartphones reign supreme though, Verizon and HTC seem to think that a smaller device can still captivate some jaded consumers. As a result they've put together the Droid Incredible 4G LTE, a poorly named device that manages to squeeze a surprising amount of power into a relatively small frame. |
Living in sprawl can cost you up to $10,000 extra a year Posted: 08 Jul 2012 02:27 PM PDT Living in sprawl can cost you up to $10,000 extra a year ![]() Living in sprawl can cost you up to $10,000 extra a year Filed under: Green Culture, Transportation Alternatives, Legislation and Policy, North America, USA Yes, we already knew that living in a home that's far away from work or from city services can be costly because of transportation costs. Now, we have a slightly better idea of how costly. Better Cities, an Ithica, New York-based advocate for growth of mixed-use and more urban communities, commissioned the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) to do a study on the cost of sprawl in 20 U.S. metropolitan areas. CNT found that the difference in transportation costs can be as high as $10,000 a year, and those costs are rising with gas prices. Urban neighborhood dwellers spent about $1,400 a year more on transportation than they did a decade ago, while suburban folks spent about $4,000 a year more. As for specific cities, New York City dwellers near transportation lines spend about $5,000 a year on transportation, the lowest in the U.S., while those who lived in the suburbs of Olympia, Washington, spend almost $18,000 a year, according to the study.Living in sprawl can cost you up to $10,000 extra a year originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 08 Jul 2012 16:55:00 EST. Roskva electric motorcycle revealed in Norway with carbon fiber chassis and clothes Posted: 08 Jul 2012 12:44 PM PDT Roskva electric motorcycle revealed in Norway with carbon fiber chassis and clothes ![]() Roskva electric motorcycle revealed in Norway with carbon fiber chassis and clothes The choices in the electric motorcycle market just keep getting juicier, and while you'll still have to stick with the more established brands like Brammo, Zero or BRD if you're looking to make a purchase, a hot new prototype has just been unveiled that threatens to make them all look a little bit... pedestrian. It's called the Roskva from a team of five students at the University of Life Sciences (UMB) in Oslo, Norway. Like a MotoGP bike it has an all carbon fiber frame that weighs less than 25kg and is wrapped in carbon bodywork and even rolls on carbon wheels. A 94HP motor provides the oomph and delivers a top speed of about 112MPH, with a maximum range of 62 miles. No word on when or if the thing might make it into actual production, but we can say for sure that there's a second picture of the thing just waiting for you right after the break, still in that same garage that is far, far neater than ours.Continue reading Roskva electric motorcycle revealed in Norway with carbon fiber chassis and clothesRoskva electric motorcycle revealed in Norway with carbon fiber chassis and clothes originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 08 Jul 2012 15:00:00 EDT. Whether it's a tropical vision quest, or a summer jaunt in Europe, the well-traveled gadgeteer faces one eternal scourge -- power. Timbuk2 hears this, and has partnered with Joey Energy to bring you two new travel bags (the Power Commute and Power Q) with internal chargers. Okay, you don't need to have the crunch of sand underfoot to benefit from one of these, in fact, dashing across town will also be a much more liberated affair, knowing that you don't need benevolent weather, or have to pack a dedicated device. The power supply has been designed to deal with the rough and tumble of the outside world, and claims to power pretty much anything that charges over USB. The Joey T1 claims to be able to provide about two full mobile charges, and both of the new bags come laden with all the tech-hiding covey holes you'd expect, costing $199 when they launch in October.Continue reading Timbuk2 Power Commute and Power Q bags will juice your tech from here to...Timbuk2 Power Commute and Power Q bags will juice your tech from here to... originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 08 Jul 2012 11:14:00 EDT. Volt vehicle line director Posawatz retires from GM Posted: 08 Jul 2012 06:25 AM PDT Volt vehicle line director Posawatz retires from GM ![]() Volt vehicle line director Posawatz retires from GM Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Chevrolet, GM, North America, USA Tony Posawatz, the longtime General Motors executive who became vehicle line director of the Chevrolet Volt extended-range plug-in, retired from the U.S. automaker after more than a quarter-century with the company, Green Car Reports reported. Posawatz was appointed to the position in March 2006 and was often the public face of GM's effort to develop its first production plug-in. He is reportedly stepping down to spend more time with his family. Posawatz began working for GM in 1980, and the company put him though Dartmouth's Tuck Business School. He had worked on developing both full-size trucks and mid-size passenger vehicles for GM before moving on to the Volt. Sales for the plug-in have picked up momentum in recent months - the model tripled its June sales from a year earlier and has moved 8,817 units through the first six months of the year, which is more than GM sold all of last year. As of late Thursday, Posawatz was still listed on the executive committee for the Electric Drive Transportation Association.Volt vehicle line director Posawatz retires from GM originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sun, 08 Jul 2012 08:53:00 EST. Wondering if advertising can help you make money from that app? Here are eight must-know tips to help you turn mobile app inventory into dollars. 1. It takes customers to make money While this is a piece about monetizing apps, the amount of money you can generate from an app is highly dependent upon the number of users you have. Once apps achieve popularity, their success spirals. In order to reach critical user adoption levels, engage in user acquisition best practices, from cross-promotion to viral distribution, and from PR to paid in-app advertising. Try multiple channels to see what works for you, and stick to vendors who allow you to pay based on the performance metrics that are relevant for your unique business needs. Relatively speaking, electric vehicles, have still been slicing the loaf, while their fossil-fueled cousins slather on the thick, fruity speed. Things are changing though, as eloquently demonstrated by Drayson Racing at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. The EV set a new race record for an electric machine, coming in at 53.91 seconds on its second run. So, while the 850 horsepower B12/69EV came 11th overall, it does show that the capabilities of the emission-less engines are making ground. With the recent record at the Nürburgring also tumbling, perhaps it's time to reassess your motoring lunch bag.Continue reading Drayson Racing's B12/69EV sets new Goodwood record, electric cars move further up the gridDrayson Racing's B12/69EV sets new Goodwood record, electric cars move further up the grid originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 08 Jul 2012 04:48:00 EDT. Naturally, Research in Motion is using the opportunity to do some "myth busting," regarding the perceived lack of selection for BlackBerry handsets and the PlayBook tablet. The Shenzhen-based manufacturer recently made them official, detailing a few unexpected tweaks in a Russian language press release. Now decked out in a sleek black finish, the nettops will sport the same I/O, but one image courtesy of FanlessTech hints that DVI might be thrown into the mix despite lacking a mention in the official press release. The AT-5250 model won't be walking the Cedar Trail with an Atom D2700 as originally planned -- instead, its sights are set on a 1.86 GHz D2550. On the other hand, the AT-5600 will pack a Radeon HD 6320 alongside the anticipated AMD E450 APU. Surpassing their presumed sub-$200 price tag, they're set to ring up at $260 and $280, respectively, when they launch this September.
