Posted: 28 Jun 2012 02:31 PM PDT Chrome for iOS hands-on ![]() Chrome for iOS hands-on Today's Google I/O keynote was, as expected, all about the Chrome. Easily one of the biggest among the company's laundry list of announcements surrounding the operating-system-turned-browser has to be its arrival on iOS, bringing the functionality that an ever-growing number of users have come to know and love to the iPhone and iPad. The list includes, perhaps most notably, its cross-device syncing, ensuring that you can pick up where you left off on the desktop version of the program, taking your pages and tabs with you on the go. So, is Google's fancy mobile browser enough to get us off mobile Safari altogether? Check out some impressions after the break.Gallery: Google Chrome for iOSContinue reading Chrome for iOS hands-onChrome for iOS hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 17:29:00 EDT. The head honchos in Mountain View took to the stage at Moscone West today and announced two programs were going to be made available in the App Store by the end of day: Chrome and Drive. The latter pushed out first, so we decided to give the free app a closer look. Head below for some screenshots and our impressions of the service. Xbox Music said to rival Spotify and iTunes, Microsoft to make a mark in music Posted: 28 Jun 2012 02:31 PM PDT Xbox Music said to rival Spotify and iTunes, Microsoft to make a mark in music ![]() Xbox Music said to rival Spotify and iTunes, Microsoft to make a mark in music Xbox Music is coming to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, that much we know. We also know that the Zune brand is dead. But whether the new service will be a simple rebadge or an entirely new beast remains a mystery. Bloomberg has it on good authority, however, that that Xbox Music will more than just a new face. Microsoft is allegedly combining all the most successful elements of its competitors -- streaming, online storage, and offline syncing -- into a product that will put iTunes, Spotify and Google Play squarely in its crosshairs. The company is allegedly in talks with the record labels to secure the necessary rights for a monthly subscription service and a market for purchasing tracks. It will also take a page from Google Music and allow customers to upload their own collections. If Microsoft can pull off a such a comprehensive service others in the field better watch out -- few companies have the reach or budget of Redmond.Xbox Music said to rival Spotify and iTunes, Microsoft to make a mark in music originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 16:57:00 EDT. Some have accused the company of nothing but flag-waving -- if that's true, the waving is about to turn into a full parade through a new hire. As of July 1st, Nintendo is bringing on Disney's former Interactive Media Group senior VP Duncan Orrell-Jones to take on the just-minted role of senior VP for the company's Network Business group in the US. He'll be handling the overall American digital strategy, which covers both gaming as well as content. We'll need to wait awhile before we see the results, but if it helps make sure friend codes never rise from the dead to haunt our Wii U, we're all for it.Continue reading Nintendo takes on Disney veteran as senior VP for digital in US, gets serious about this whole internet thingNintendo takes on Disney veteran as senior VP for digital in US, gets serious about this whole internet thing originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 16:41:00 EDT. Posted: 28 Jun 2012 01:57 PM PDT RIM announces Q1 earnings: $518 million net loss, 5,000 job cuts, BB10 not due until Q1 2013 ![]() RIM announces Q1 earnings: $518 million net loss, 5,000 job cuts, BB10 not due until Q1 2013 The last quarter has been about as rough as they come for RIM, and it's now detailed just how things stacked up in terms of hard numbers. For the first quarter of its 2013 fiscal year, the company brought in $2.8 billion in revenue, down a full 33 percent from the prior quarter, while it reported a net loss of $518 million. What's more, it's also announced that it's cutting an additional 5,000 jobs as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts, and that the first BlackBerry 10 smartphones now won't launch until sometime in the first quarter of the 2013 calendar year. As for why, RIM only went as far as to say that the integration of some key BlackBerry 10 features and the "associated large volume of code" has "proven to be more time consuming than anticipated." For his part, though, CEO Thorsten Heins says he remains "confident that the first BlackBerry 10 smartphones will provide a ground-breaking next generation smartphone user experience," and that he's "encouraged by the traction that the BlackBerry 10 platform is gaining with application developers and content partners." He further notes that the response to BB10 from key carrier partners has "been very positive." In terms of its existing devices, RIM reports that BlackBerry smartphone shipments (not sales) for the quarter totaled 7.8 million, while there were about 260,000 PlayBooks shipped. Not surprisingly, the company is warning of more bad news to come. It says it expects the "next several quarters to continue to be very challenging," with everything from the "increasing competitive environment," lower handset volumes, impact from the BlackBerry 10 delay, and the company's plans to "continue to aggressively drive sales of BlackBerry 7 handheld devices" expected to cut into its bottom line. In another bit of news, the company also announced that it has appointed Steve Zipperstein, Verizon's former General Counsel, as its new Chief Legal Officer. You can find the full earnings report at the source link below.RIM announces Q1 earnings: $518 million net loss, 5,000 job cuts, BB10 not due until Q1 2013 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 16:25:00 EDT. The Canadian company reported a loss of $518 million (which breaks down to $0.99/share diluted) on revenues of $2.8 billion. To put that in a bit of perspective, RIM reported a net loss of $0.24/share diluted (or $125 million) on $4.2 billion in revenues in Q4 2012. Meanwhile, analysts expected RIM to report a net loss of $0.03/share on revenues of $3.1 billion in the days leading up to the release. The company also reported that despite their longstanding claims to the contrary, the first BlackBerry 10 smartphone isn't expected to see the light of day until the first quarter of 2013. |

Now, most of that snow may have melted, but the SDK is finally a cold, hard reality. Made available to the developing masses at Google I/O this week, frosty-fingered devs can use the tool to hook-in to Recon's visual display tools, including its MOD Live series. Given that this opens up the goggles' altimeter, barometer, accelerometer, gyro and magnetometer and temperature reader, that's a lot of detail to tuck into. Gavin Newsom takes a look at the Tesla Model S with Elon Musk Posted: 28 Jun 2012 01:24 PM PDT Gavin Newsom takes a look at the Tesla Model S with Elon Musk ![]() Gavin Newsom takes a look at the Tesla Model S with Elon Musk Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Tesla Motors, Videos Want a private tour of the Tesla Model S? Try being California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, who is also the host of The Gavin Newsom Show. All that Current TV is releasing so far is a brief clip of Newsom talking with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, mostly getting a tour of the car's huge touchscreen. What's perhaps most enlightening about this video (available below) is that this is intended for a broad audience, and so we can sort of make assumptions about how the Model S is going to infiltrate the broader culture. The touch screen is "like an iPad" and charging is "no big deal" because of the big lithium-ion battery pack and the ability to charge at home. When you're out and about (and Tesla actually builds some), you can charge the pack in an hour with at SuperCharger Musk makes it all sound so easy. Thus, like the Roadster (and the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt and others) before it, the Model S will help shift public opinion on electric vehicles. As we've seen, all the early reviews make it sound like a spectacular hit; we'll see if this trend continues. Newsom will broadcast a full interview with Musk, Peter Diamandis (who was behind the Automotive X Prize) and journalist Paul Ingrassia Friday night at 11 p.m. Eastern on Current. We're guessing they'll talk cars, space ships and more.Continue reading Gavin Newsom takes a look at the Tesla Model S with Elon MuskGavin Newsom takes a look at the Tesla Model S with Elon Musk originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 15:56:00 EST. Cue Orange France. The wireless carrier's taking a non-traditional route to spur adoption by sidestepping manufacturers and bringing the near field communication tech to all 27 million of its subscribers directly. To do this, the operator's implementing Gemalto's UpTeq SIM, a secure NFC solution the company claims is on par with existing chip-based implementations. Going forward, the enhanced SIMs will be standard issue for new post-paid users throughout the carrier's home footprint, while current subs will have to contact Orange to specifically request it. In other words, when you want to watch something, you should able to find it in one interface, regardless of the delivery method. |
Hands On With Google Drive On iOS Posted: 28 Jun 2012 01:24 PM PDT Hands On With Google Drive On iOS ![]() Hands On With Google Drive On iOS As promised at this morning's Google I/O conference, Google has launched a version of its Google Drive application on iOS today, which offers native support for the service formerly known as Google Docs on both iPhone and iPad. The app is live now in iTunes, and looks to give competitor Dropbox a run for its money. Although Google Drive has offered a mobile web version of its service for some time, many people prefer using a native application on their smartphones or tablets. This is somewhere Dropbox has previously excelled, but it no longer has that same advantage after today. |

JVC this morning claims to have "upped the ante" with the GC-XA1 ADIXXION -- and it's a hard point to argue. Let's look at the facts here: Sony's Action Cam has zero Xs in its name and the GC-XA1 ADIXXION has three. Three! Also on-board is WiFi and a 1.5-inch LCD monitor. The camcorder can do HD video, five megapixel stills and has 5x digital zoom. It's waterproof up to five meters, dustproof, freezeproof and can stand up to a fall of two meters -- all without that extra plastic casing. When it hits in late summer, it'll run you $350 -- or about $117 per X.Continue reading JVC unveils ADIXXION camcorder -- the second X is for 'xxtreme'JVC unveils ADIXXION camcorder -- the second X is for 'xxtreme' originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 15:54:00 EDT. Microsoft reportedly plans Windows 8 upgrades all the way from XP, wants us to j... Posted: 28 Jun 2012 12:50 PM PDT Microsoft reportedly plans Windows 8 upgrades all the way from XP, wants us to just let go of the past ![]() Microsoft reportedly plans Windows 8 upgrades all the way from XP, wants us to just let go of the past Microsoft has been promising a cheap-and-cheerful upgrade path to Windows 8 for those who buy new PCs. But what about that five-year-old PC in the basement? If the historically well-connected Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet is right, the upgrade path will go further back -- much further. Although upgraders will still want Windows 7 if they need to carry over absolutely everything, tipsters claim that settings can transfer from releases as old as Windows Vista SP1. Those with truly ancient PCs (we're looking at you, corporate customers) can even bring over personal files from an OS as dated as Windows XP SP3. Like we saw last time around, some of the 7-to-8 upgrade rules are a bit Byzantine -- 7 Professional users can't step down to the non-Pro Windows 8 release, for example, and it's equally verboten to change language editions or move from 32- to 64-bit code without a full-scale reinstallation. The extra-long olive branch will be slightly unusual for Microsoft if it's confirmed, but then the company is also trying to move along a user base that in some cases has clung to XP for more than a decade. Redmond is no doubt eager to get rid of our dependency issues.Microsoft reportedly plans Windows 8 upgrades all the way from XP, wants us to just let go of the past originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 15:39:00 EDT. But while Square and the rest currently target smaller merchants that do not have card facilities already, mPowa is first going after bigger fish: the large enterprises that do. "Our main focus are those businesses who already take cards but lack the mobile point of sale facilities to make transactions on the go, the Whirlpools or charities of the world," Dan Wagner, the founder and CEO, told me in an interview earlier today. "Now they can make home visits or collect money anywhere." And that's not the only difference. The service works on devices covering four different platforms: iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows, another way to aim for mass coverage. |

Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile review Posted: 28 Jun 2012 12:16 PM PDT Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile review ![]() Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile review More Info Samsung Galaxy S III (I9300) review Samsung Galaxy S III review shootout: AT&T and Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III (T-Mobile) hands-on If three's a crowd, the Samsung Galaxy S III party in the US is about to get pretty stuffy. Having already reviewed AT&T and Sprint's variants -- not to mention the original I9300 before them -- we're now ready to put a third iteration through its paces, this time from the country's fourth-largest carrier, T-Mobile. Of course, the phone itself needs no grand introduction, as it's fast become the new darling of the smartphone world. And rightfully so, in many respects: it's the first high-end device to launch on all four major mobile operators in the US (a feat in and of itself), and it's done so with minimal carrier branding, hardware changes or bloatware levies. It is, in essence, an unadulterated handset. The reason this piece of news is so wondrous is that it opens up your ability to choose your phone service based on the network, not on the actual phone each individual carrier offers. Sadly, the big tradeoff here is the loss of an Exynos quad-core processor in exchange for a Snapdragon S4 dual-core chipset and additional RAM. Join us as we take a deeper look at the T-Mobile Galaxy S III. Is it the best phone on the network? Is it worth shelling out $280 (with a two-year contract) for the 16GB model? How well does it perform? This and more answers await you in our full review below.Gallery: Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile reviewContinue reading Samsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile reviewSamsung Galaxy S III for T-Mobile review originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 15:00:00 EDT. The answer, straight from Sergey Brin's mouth, is 2014... hopefully. The Google big wig told Bloomberg that, if all goes according to plan, Google Glass will become available to consumers en masse sometime in 2014. Of course, how much cheaper they'll be two years from now is anyone's guess. But we wouldn't expect the first-gen to be an impulse purchase. When you check out the video after the break, you might notice that Sergey is wearing a new set of Glass glasses (how's that for awkward sounding), these ones with some snap in shades. British stores are getting a similar amount of care with a Chromebook presence in Dixons stores throughout the UK. We're still waiting on more details, such as which models will grace shelves, but there's good reason to suspect that Samsung's Series 5 550 will be front and center. If you haven't had the chance to make it out to a library or a cross-country flight to try a Chromebook for yourself, all you'll have to do now is swing by the local electronics shop to give that cloud computer a real shakedown.Google sends Chromebooks to some Best Buy and Dixons stores, starting today originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jun 2012 13:48:00 EDT. Google Compute Engine brings Linux virtual machines 'at Google scale' Posted: 28 Jun 2012 11:08 AM PDT Google Compute Engine brings Linux virtual machines 'at Google scale' ![]() Google Compute Engine brings Linux virtual machines 'at Google scale' As anticipated, Google has just launched its cloud service for businesses at Google I/O 2012, called Google Compute Engine. Starting today Urs Holzle announced "anyone with large-scale computing needs" can access the infrastructure and efficiency of Google's datacenters. The company is promising both performance and stability -- Amazon EC2 they're coming for you -- claiming "this is how infrastructure as a service is supposed to work". It's also promising "50 percent more computes per dollar" than competitors. Beta testers will be on hand at later meetings to give impressions of the service, if you want to know how running your apps on 700,000 (and counting) cores feels. During the presentation we got a demo of a genome app and we're sure if we understood what was going on, it would have been impressive. Google Drive: 10 million users served Posted: 28 Jun 2012 11:08 AM PDT Google Drive: 10 million users served ![]() Google Drive: 10 million users served Day two of Google I/O 2012 has started, and Big G just gave us an update on the success of its cloud storage solution. Google Drive's been accessed by over 10 million people, which comes out to about 1 million a week since its launch. Not a massive number, but it's a pretty good start, and with the explosive growth of Android and the addition of Chrome OS and iDevice users to the Drive party, the cloud locker's legion of users will continue to grow. Google announces offline editing for Docs, available later today Posted: 28 Jun 2012 11:08 AM PDT Google announces offline editing for Docs, available later today ![]() Google announces offline editing for Docs, available later today We're live at day two of I/O and the theme of this keynote is all about "Going Google." With this focus on Mountain View's various cloud-based apps, Clay Bavar, Director of Product Management for Google Apps, announced that Docs will now work offline for editing. In the onstage demo, Bavar was able to log into several devices, including a Nexus phone and tablet, to interact and collaborate in real-time on a document. Thanks to the smooth syncing at work, edits made from each device showed up as they were being entered, keystroke-by-keystroke. Now, those edits can also be created without a working internet connection and synced up later. You won't have to wait long, either, to take this offline mode for a test spin, as the feature will be enabled later in the day, with that functionality "coming soon" for presentations and spreadsheets. Google Drive client comes to Chrome OS and iOS, available today Posted: 28 Jun 2012 11:08 AM PDT Google Drive client comes to Chrome OS and iOS, available today ![]() Google Drive client comes to Chrome OS and iOS, available today Windows, Mac and Android users are no longer alone in their access to Google Drive's online repository. Now iOS and Chrome OS users can install a client and pull down their data and docs (though, the promised Linux client was nowhere to be seen at IO). The iOS app has all the features that make Drive drive great on Android, including OCR and picture recognition. As part of the demo, Clay Bavor, Director of Product Management for Google Apps, showed off the apps ability to decipher and index text from receipts he had taken a picture of. Perhaps more impressive though, was his ability to simply type "pyramids" and have his vacation snapshots pop up. There was no metadata attached to the images identifying them as the pyramids in Egypt, Google was able to recognize the landmarks by analyzing the photos. Obviously, Drive and seamless integration with it is key to Chrome OS's success. Now the browser-based OS finally has a native Drive client allowing you to quickly sync and access your data on the lightweight Linux machines. The ability to sync files with Chrome OS is great, but more importantly, an update to the web service has now made offline editing available -- perhaps the most requested feature. Now with offline access ironed out and all the major desktop and mobile OSes under it's belt Drive may actually be ready to challenge peripheral competitors like Dropbox.
