iRobot Roomba 790 with Wireless Command Center hands-on (video)
What to get the homeowner who has everything? Perhaps a robotic vacuum styled in the fashion of an RC toy will fit the bill. Here at a GDGT event in New York City we happened upon iRobot's Roomba 790, which comes with a touchscreen remote for manually controlling where the bot goes. The controller -- make that the "Wireless Command Center" -- has an interface matching the one on the 790 itself, so there's no second set of menus to master here. In addition to deciding where it moves, you can also schedule daily cleanings or tap a "Clean" button to push the robot into action.Though this isn't the first time iRobot's dabbled in remote-controlled vacuum cleaners, all previous models relied on infrared sensors, meaning you could only control the Roomba if it was in your line of sight. This guy, though, uses a proprietary technology that allows you to program that 4pm scrubbing from up to 25 meters away. As for battery life, it runs on four AA cells, and is rated for three to six months of runtime, depending on how compulsively you plan on cleaning. Interestingly, despite the change in wireless standards, the 790 is compatible with older 700-series Roombas, though it's not as is the controller would be sold separately. If you happen to be the kind of fabulously wealthy family who can afford (and has a need) for multiple Roomba cleaners, you can only pair the remote with one robot at a time anyway. Don't have the budget for a $700 robotic vacuum kit? We've got hands-on photos below and a demo video after the break. Must See HDTV (June 25th - July 1st)

Must See HDTV (June 25th - July 1st)
Louie Comedian Louis CK's offbeat comedy show returns to FX this week for its third season, and while it's not distributed via a PayPal-supported downloadable honor system, we'll watch anyway. The show's been among the funniest selections out there for the last few seasons and we expect it to remain there. The only difference is the packed lineup FX has arranged around it, with fellow returnee Wilfred and new series premieres from Charlie Sheen in Anger Management and Brand X with Russell Brand. (June 28th, FX, 10:30PM) Weeds Nancy Botwin is back (?). After the up and down last few seasons, that statement isn't at interesting as it used to be, but after the cliffhanger finale, we'll tune in to at least see what's going on. Drugs are bad, kids, mmmkay? (July 1st, Showtime, 10PM) XIII We don't point out that ReelzChannel HD is reairing this French / Canadian thriller series from last year because we think it will be good -- we have no idea. We're just pointing it out because we're in it (well, our source code is). Flattery will get you everywhere. Peugeot 508 Hybrid4 uses diesel-hybrid tech to achieve 65 mpg
Filed under: Diesel, Hybrid, Peugeot Say hello to the latest diesel hybrid, the new Peugeot 508 HYbrid4. This is the third body style to feature the automaker's HYbrid4 technology, the others being the DS5 and the 3008. The four-wheel-drive diesel-electric spits out just 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer, Peugeot says, from a 2-liter HDi diesel engine that offers 120 kW (163 horsepower) alongside a 27-kW (37-hp) electric motor. That's the same set-up that has been the heart of the HYbrid4 powerplant since the system was launched in 2009. If you're more used to mpg numbers than CO2/km, that's about equivalent to 65 miles per U.S. gallon. The car also has an all-electric mode, alongside "Auto," "Sport" and "4WD," but details on this option were not disclosed. Price, too, has not yet been revealed. On the DS5, going for the diesel-hybrid over the normal powertrain costs an extra $6,000 or so.Continue reading Peugeot 508 Hybrid4 uses diesel-hybrid tech to achieve 65 mpgPeugeot 508 Hybrid4 uses diesel-hybrid tech to achieve 65 mpg originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 25 Jun 2012 18:00:00 EST. Amazon Lockers hit 7-Elevens in Washington DC, let you grab your parcel and a Slurpee
The convenience of shopping at Amazon just got bumped up a few notches in the Northern Virginia sector of Washington DC. Folks who swear their delivery person never rings the bell before dropping off packages will be pleased to know that Amazon Lockers have popped up at multiple 7-Elevens around the region. As Zatz Not Funny notes, Amazon has yet to officially list the market under the service, but at least four locations are searchable -- and the site did find one more that's currently off the radar. If you're eager to get a glimpse of the P.O. Box-esque units for yourself or get access on your account, you'll find more info at the source links below.Amazon Lockers hit 7-Elevens in Washington DC, let you grab your parcel and a Slurpee originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 25 Jun 2012 17:51:00 EDT. Microsoft's Xbox 360 $99 on-contract deal expands to Best Buy, Gamestop
The Xbox 360 pilot program's breaking out of its Microsoft Store-only confines and heading to more ubiquitous electronics retailers Best Buy and GameStop starting today. If you'll remember, Redmond intro'd this subsidized plan last month, giving prospective buyers within reach of one of its 16 participating locations the ability to purchase a 4GB version of the console for $99 with a two-year commitment. In exchange for those contract chains, gamers forking over the $15 monthly fee not only get the privilege of owning the console at a discounted, upfront cost, but also Gold level membership to Xbox Live. We'd caution you to think twice and do some hard math before you hand over the plastic, though. Tempting as that low-price barrier to entry is -- in total, a $460 value -- you might be better off grabbing this console outright at $420 or less.Microsoft's Xbox 360 $99 on-contract deal expands to Best Buy, Gamestop originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 25 Jun 2012 17:34:00 EDT. You Won't Find Friends Nearby Anymore: Facebook Pulls Its Location-Aware Mobile App To Add New Friends
So much for that! Just as quietly and quickly as Facebook had put "Find Friends Nearby" online on Sunday, the service seems to be no longer there. A visit to the mobile web page is blank, and a click on the "Find Friends Nearby" tab in the iOS app goes to an error page. When we first broke the news about Facebook's new feature yesterday, the prospect raised all sorts of questions about what Facebook might do in this space. The app lets users find other Facebook users near them, and then quickly add them to their network: the service looked very rudimentary, but the concept offers potential ideas for how Facebook could develop such a service going forward.

More Evidence Shows Apple Store Search Changes (Including Some Sad Developers)
We now have more information about the changes to Apple's App Store search algorithm, thanks to a blog post from Ian Sefferman at MobileDevHQ. TechCrunch broke the news about the change on Saturday , but our story was based on the impressions of individual app developers and some searches of our own. Sefferman, however, actually crawled App Store search results, and offered this summary of his findings:

Microsoft Confirms They Won't Be Making Their Own Windows Phones
When Microsoft announced their intentions to jump into the hardware space with the unveiling of their new Surface tablet, the next logical question seemed to be whether or not the folks at Redmond would do the same for smartphones. After all, the model seemed to be doing well enough for Apple -- was Microsoft considering adopting a similar approach to help give their Windows Phones a new leg up? The answer, it would seem, is no.

Crayolascope hacks toys into foot-thick 3D display
Artist Blair Neal, as many other great creators have before him, turned to children's toys as the source of inspiration for his latest project. Crayolascope is a rudimentary 3D display hacked together from several Glow Books, a light-up play on a flip-book from the titular company. The installation, currently housed at the New York Hall of Science in Flushing, layers 12 of its component clear plastic sheets to create a roughly one-foot deep display that plays a simple pre-drawn animation. The whole thing is controlled by an Arduino Mega, that can either play back the neon scribbles at varying speeds (controlled by a knob built into the console) or scrub through frame by frame. Neal isn't quite done tweaking the Crayolascope either. As it stands he's limited to between 14 and 18 frames, before it becomes too difficult to see through the sheets. And it requires near total darkness for optimal operation. To see it in action check out the video after the break.Continue reading Crayolascope hacks toys into foot-thick 3D displayCrayolascope hacks toys into foot-thick 3D display originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 25 Jun 2012 16:59:00 EDT. The Engadget Show 34: LeVar Burton, weather balloons over Alaska, Northeastern University and ITP
This month's show is all about learning -- but don't worry, it's a lot more fun than it sounds. We'll be putting the "tainment" back in edutainment. But first, we're kicking things off with a quick detour to Los Angeles to check out all of the explosive sights and sounds at E3 and heading over to the gadget tables to show off the Samsung Galaxy S III on AT&T, the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display and the taking the new Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 for a spin around the studio. Next up, Tim heads to Alaska to work with a team of researchers studying the northern lights with high-tech balloons and helmet cameras. We've also got class visits to Northeastern University, where students are creating technology for the betterment of mankind and NYU's ITP school, where art and technology meet. ITP's Danne Woo and Matt Richardson will be showing of some of the school's projects, including the kinetically-powered Circuit Board, the Descriptive Camera and the condiment-extruding Burritob0t. Then we'll close things out with an interview from none other than LeVar Burton, who tells us about the rebirth of Reading Rainbow and how Project Glass and the iPad are making the real world a little bit more like Star Trek. New Colorado law makes it easy to sell electricity to EVs

New Colorado law makes it easy to sell electricity to EVs
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Legislation and Policy, USA There's an old problem on the law book that has hindered plug-in vehicle adoption in the U.S.: figuring out who has the rights to sell electricity. Traditionally, in many areas, only utilities have that right because of, we've heard, unscrupulous landlords who overcharged their tenants. Of course, if you're a landlord today who wants to install an electric vehicle charging station, how do you legally sell your tenants the juice? Colorado has an answer. A new state law will take effect in August whereby, for $5,000, you can get a permit to sell electricity at a vehicle recharging station. Given that around 1,200 EVs are registered in the state, Governor John Hickenlooper says the new law will encourage more businesses to install vehicle chargers. The Denver Post reports that there are around 60 charging stations in the state ("most" of them currently free), including 40 at various Walgreens. Dave Altman, regional development and government sales chief for Eaton, told the paper that he expects $1-an-hour battery charging to become a reality soon. Earlier this month, Audi released a video about the e-tron pilot project featuring the plug-in A3 hatchback in Colorado. There's also a federal program, Fostering Electric Vehicle Expansion in the Rockies (FEVER) that, well, the name describes what it's about.New Colorado law makes it easy to sell electricity to EVs originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Mon, 25 Jun 2012 15:50:00 EST. And now, thanks to the hotspot provider (with some promotional help from the folks at Google Offers), Manhattanites will be able to do just that all over Twitter from the convenience of a handful of subway stations on 14th and 23rd street. The promotion begins today and runs through September 7th. Including the hashtag #FreeNYCWiFi puts you in the running for Boingo rewards. Toshiba Excite 13 review: a big-screened tablet with a price to match
Well, this lede pretty much wrote itself. A 13-inch tablet, seriously? Toshiba is pushing the form factor limits with the Excite 13, and while its dimensions make it stand out in a sea of 7- and 10-inch devices, that isn't necessarily what tablet buyers are looking for. More Info Toshiba announces Excite 10, 7.7 and 13 tablets, Thrive slates on their way out Toshiba Excite 7.7 review Toshiba Excite 10 review There's no shortage of skepticism about such a large slate -- "slab" seems appropriate here -- so the Toshiba Excite 13 needs to provide an exceptional experience, with a brilliant display and smooth graphics, to make 2.2 pounds seem more palatable. On paper, its specs are promising: there's a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU under the hood, a 1600 x 900 display at 138 ppi and a clean build of Android 4.0. The company already has the Excite 7.7 and Excite 10 in its arsenal, and their good performance and bright displays make for compelling tablets. But how does a 13-inch tablet that starts at $650 round out that trio? Read on for our full impressions. Microsoft buying Yammer to beef up enterprise social networking efforts
So, what exactly is a Yammer? Well, it's a simple social network designed not to connect you with family or college roommates, but with with your coworkers. The platform has had some success, but its most high profile moment may be today's announcement that Microsoft had purchased the company. Rumors had been circulating for about a week, but now Redmond has made it official and issued a press release announcing its plan to purchase the startup for $1.2 billion in cash. Yammer will continue to live on as a stand alone service, which should make its 5 million users and countless Fortune 500 customers happy. But Microsoft will certainly be looking to fold its features into its own suite of enterprise offerings, like SharePoint and Office 365. BMW, Toyota mulling expansive partnership for fuel-efficient vehicles
Filed under: Hybrid, Hydrogen, BMW, Toyota, Lightweight In December of 2011, BMW and Toyota signed an agreement to collaborate on lithium-ion battery development, and the deal included a provision where BMW would small-displacement diesel engines for Toyota products sold in Europe. It was brought up at the time that the partnership could expand further, and seven months later, it apparently has: Reuters reports the two companies "have now agreed several projects" in "other fields of cooperation." The Reuters report, based on an article in Germany's Der Spiegel, said there were no more specifics but that the two company CEOS would make an announcement "in the near future." A story in Germany's Manager magazine went further, however, citing the same Der Spiegel piece and saying that BMW and Toyota would form an alliance around "joint projects in hybrid technology, fuel cells, vehicle electronics" and lightweight technology. The announcement isn't surprising - BMW's move into the small, lightweight hybrid space with its forthcoming i sub-brand gives it all the reason to save R&D dollars by teaming up with the company considered the world's green auto leader, and the rumored expansion topics could help replace BMW's partnership with Peugeot, on the rocks ever since the French firm tied up with General Motors' Opel division. IK Multimedia iRig MIX review: a mobile mixer built for iDevices

IK Multimedia iRig MIX review: a mobile mixer built for iDevices
Accessories, iOS has them. Not many devices can boast the same rich and dazzling array of add-ons that the iPhone or iPad enjoy -- from keyboards to docks, arcade cabinets to battery packs. Today's offering? A mobile mixer. The iRig MIX from IK Multimedia, to be precise. It's essentially a mini DJ tool, designed to work with such iGadgets, and brought to you by the same serial audio-accessorizers behind the iRig MIC Cast and AmpliTube. If you think you've seen this fella before, then you likely have, as this got its first glimpse of sunlight back at CES. Now it's here for real, auditioning for your affections as if it were on "American Idol." While it's easy to dismiss some of the more ambitious accessories as as trying to push the limits of iPad / iPhone functionality to the extreme, it's also worth remembering that accessory X isn't always about replacing object Y. No one ever bought a USB webcam thinking it'd turn them into Spielberg, now did they? But, they might have gotten one thinking it would give their PC some skills it never had before. So it's with this short, preemptive missive in mind that we turn on the iRig MIX, plug in and rock out.
