Galaxy S III changes pin layout, incompatible with previous MHL adapters
If you've pre-ordered a Galaxy S III and can't wait to see its display mirrored to the silver screen, add one more thing to that pre-launch shopping list: a new MHL dongle. According to UK retailer Clove, a change in the phone's connector pins renders it incompatible with previous Samsung-made adapters. Sammy's new microUSB-powered connector supports 1080p output via HDMI -- though it reportedly doesn't play nicely with 720p displays -- and rings up at $40 on Amazon. Mosey past the break for a video unboxing of the dongle.Continue reading Galaxy S III changes pin layout, incompatible with previous MHL adaptersGalaxy S III changes pin layout, incompatible with previous MHL adapters originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 17:46:00 EDT. The Michigan Transportation Musical makes riding a bus sound joyous
Filed under: Biodiesel, Green Culture, Transportation Alternatives, Videos Need some lighthearted proof that Millennials - or whatever we're calling college-age students these days - can get excited about not driving cars? Check out The Michigan Transportation Musical. The reason the twelve-and-a-half-minute video got made is to let new students at the University of Michigan know about the various transportation options on and off campus in Ann Arbor if they don't have a car, focusing mostly on the biodiesel-hybrid bus system and the late-night Safe Ride. It leaves out biking and Zipcar (which is available in Ann Arbor), but it's still a good introduction for new students (which is exactly the people who will watch it when they get to campus for orientation this summer). The video was filmed and produced last month by UM students. There's dancing and song parodies and decent jokes as we learn about the various transportation alternatives from Billy Magic, who is explaining things to The Kid (who has puppet parents, so expect some surreal moments). We have to echo a key question The Kid asks Billy, though: "If you can teleport, why are we taking buses?" Watch it below.Continue reading The Michigan Transportation Musical makes riding a bus sound joyousThe Michigan Transportation Musical makes riding a bus sound joyous originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 15:56:00 EST. PSA: Some Meebo services shutting down starting next week
News barely just hit the airwaves about Google snapping up social platform Meebo, and already it's being dismantled. As from Monday (June 11th,) Meebo Messenger, Sharing on Meebo, MeeboMe and all the mobile apps will be shutting down. In the meantime you'll still be able to download chat logs, sharing history and so on, but you'll need to hop on quick, before the final curtain. Meebo does confirm, however, that its Bar product will continue to be available, and receive support, for the at least the coming months.PSA: Some Meebo services shutting down starting next week originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 15:23:00 EDT. ComScore: Nearly a quarter of US smartphone owners have tablets, love their video
If you've got a smartphone, it's increasingly likely that you're also carrying a tablet as a sidearm. ComScore understands that 23.6 percent of American smartphone owners also have an iPad, Kindle Fire or some other large touchscreen slab as of April. That's only 16.5 percent of all cellphone owners in the land, but that's a huge jump from 9.7 percent of smartphone owners (4.7 percent of cellphone owners) just one year earlier. And if you do own a slate, odds are that you're watching your fair share of movies and cat videos. More than half of tablet users, 53 percent, fire up the likes of Netflix or YouTube at least once a month, with almost a tenth (9.5 percent) tuning in daily. Tablet lovers are unsurprisingly three times more likely to watch than their smartphone counterparts, suggesting that it's just a short hop from buying a tablet to catching up on Daily Show episodes.ComScore: Nearly a quarter of US smartphone owners have tablets, love their video originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 14:33:00 EDT. China-bound Sony Xperia Neo L with ICS gets handled, holds nothing back
It was only a couple of months ago that we first crossed paths with Sony's Xperia Neo L, and now the Ice Cream Sandwich handset is back with a vengeance -- at least in terms of exposure. As you may know, details were revealed in abundance (read: 1GHz Snapdragon S2 CPU, 512MB of RAM) during our first MT25i encounter, but thanks to Taiwanese site ePrice, we're able to gander at the device posing in an array of different angles and leaving very little to the imagination. For now, pricing still remains a mystery, though we do know Sony's 4-inch (854 x 480) Neo L is expected to hit Chinese shelves later this month. Until then, anyone intrigued can jump past the break to check out a different look, or hit the source link for the full set of snaps.Continue reading China-bound Sony Xperia Neo L with ICS gets handled, holds nothing backChina-bound Sony Xperia Neo L with ICS gets handled, holds nothing back originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 13:14:00 EDT. E3 2012: the year of the lackluster blockbuster

E3 2012: the year of the lackluster blockbuster
The Electronics Entertainment Expo is no place for the easily distracted, every inch of convention center carpet devoted to capturing the attentions of calloused video game journalists. In spite of the customary flash however, it's hard to come away from this year's festivals without a creeping sense of disappointment, that for all the showmanship, we didn't actually see all that much at E3 2012 -- an in-between year that seemed lackluster even by those standards. It's diminishing to break such a show up into clearly delineated binaries like "winners" and "losers" certainly, but if impact can be measured by lasting buzz, Epic's certainly sitting pretty at the close of the event. It's telling, really, that Unreal Engine 4 generated some of the most excitement around the show. In a year when Sony and Microsoft are no doubt focused on churning out next generation consoles, one of the show's highlights came in the form of a gaming engine -- a backend on which the next generation titles will be built.Continue reading E3 2012: the year of the lackluster blockbusterE3 2012: the year of the lackluster blockbuster originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 12:00:00 EDT. If that extra Dropbox storage helped swing the Galaxy S III pendulum in your favor, and you're a customer of AT&T or Verizon, it's not good news. Droid Life reports that one such expectant customer was asking Dropbox, via its forums, where their storage was. The cloud-space provider informed them that not all carriers are offering the deal, with those two big hitters being among them. This is further confirmed elsewhere on its support pages (check the source). So, just as we thought operators were loosening their grip, it seems some old habits don't die so easily.Dropbox confirms Galaxy S III on AT&T and Verizon won't include 50GB storage originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 11:33:00 EDT. Engineer makes light-up business cards with 555 timer, proves PCB skills
Sure, there have been some pretty creative variations on the standard paper business card, but if you're looking to make a career in electronics engineering, card stock isn't necessarily the best option for material. Such was the case for one student, who had the canny idea to make a card that demonstrates his printed circuit board know-how. He used a 555 timer that outputs a clock to the LEDs on the biz card, and placing a nine-volt battery on the terminals sets off the mini light show. See for yourself in the video below.Continue reading Engineer makes light-up business cards with 555 timer, proves PCB skillsEngineer makes light-up business cards with 555 timer, proves PCB skills originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 11:09:00 EDT. Sometimes it can feel like you're being sold a book one page at a time. The latest in the Droid RAZR HD's story comes via some benchmarks. A NenaMark2 report clearly shows what claims to be the Verizon phone with a Qualcomm Adreno 225 GPU. Not the most exciting plot twist, but this does, by association, reveal that it's a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 running the show, as rumors have been suggesting. The resolution (1196 x 720) and Android version (4.0.4) also got an outing, with an overall score on the test of 59.1. Ready for the next chapter? BYD sells six electric buses to Netherlands' island
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Transportation Alternatives, Europe/EU, China, BYD Don't worry, there won't be a spelling test for this one. China-based vehicle maker BYD won a contract to sell six of its electric buses to the 10-mile-long island that's home to the Netherlands' first national park. BYD says that park, Schiermonnikoog (spell-check won't catch that), is "virtually car free" and has just 1,000 residents. What do they need with six big buses? Well, the island attracts about 350,000 visitors annually, and now they can be shuttled around in tailpipe-emission-free buses starting early next year. Last month, BYD won a contract to supply the city of Windsor, Ontario - right across the river from Detroit - with what will be the first fleet of all-electric buses for a North American municipality. Last year, BYD won similar contracts with Singapore and Frankfurt, Germany. BYD has said its eBUS-12 has a single-charge range of 186 miles.Continue reading BYD sells six electric buses to Netherlands' islandBYD sells six electric buses to Netherlands' island originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 08:32:00 EST. Disney troubled over early offering of John Carter DVD by Netflix and Redbox
Well, well, the warrior from Mars seems to have stirred some problems over in the US of A. According to the LA Times, Disney isn't exactly happy with Netflix and Redbox, mainly because they're both offering the hot-off-the-press John Carter DVD ahead of that 28-day rental window -- granted, the parties never agreed to a deal in the first place, and thus it shouldn't cause any legal troubles. The conundrum started after Walt's movie studio couldn't close a pact with Netflix and Redbox that'd see them offer new rentals after the aforementioned time frame. This eventually lead to the services buying discs off of retailers like Walmart and Target for more than twice as much as they would from the studio, but allowing them to have it up for grabs on release date. Chances are this saga won't end here, though, so we'll keep you in the loop if this takes a turn for the worse.Disney troubled over early offering of John Carter DVD by Netflix and Redbox originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 08:36:00 EDT. Metro-style Hotmail turns up in leaked screenshots
It certainly wouldn't come as much of a surprise that Microsoft would finally bring Hotmail into the Metro fold, but until now we haven't had much evidence that such a change was actually in the works. If a set of leaked screenshots obtained by WinFuture are any indication, however, it looks like the nearly sixteen-year-old email service could soon be getting one of its biggest redesigns to date. As you'd expect, it all looks very Metro, but also very unfinished, with a number of features reportedly still missing or not working properly. Of course, there's no indication when or if it'll actually roll out to the millions of Hotmail users (though the Windows 8 launch would provide a convenient fit), but there's plenty more screenshots where this one came from at the source link below.Metro-style Hotmail turns up in leaked screenshots originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 07:50:00 EDT. Apple alternative to UDID may come soon, track app use without pesky privacy issues
Apple has already provided a few clues as to what it's going to put on the plate for developers at WWDC. One change that's unlikely to be touted at the keynote, or even the entire conference, could prove to be the most important for app writers: an alternative to the UDID (Unique Device Identifier) that Apple started phasing out a year ago. If Wall Street Journal tipsters are right, the hardware-specific ID will be replaced with tagging independent of any one iPad or iPhone, such as a number sequence. The system as it's teased would let developers track user behavior and improve their apps without spooking users worried that Apple, or someone else, might snoop over their shoulders by linking a UDID to the owner. It sure sounds like a remedy to mounting privacy concerns to us, although an unveiling supposedly due within the "coming weeks" raises the possibility that the new ID won't show its face until after the programming hordes have already left San Francisco.Apple alternative to UDID may come soon, track app use without pesky privacy issues originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 06:13:00 EDT. NHK lays out Olympic broadcast plans, Super Hi-Vision test viewing locations in Japan
We've already run down Olympic broadcast plans in the US and UK, and now Japanese broadcaster NHK has unveiled some information. Similar to the others there is not only the TV production including data about ongoing competition, but also an online component complete with live video access on mobile devices, but also support for the acTVila video on-demand portal. The other notable information is that it's locked down locations and details for those trial Super Hi-Vision broadcasts, listing four spots where people can get their eyes on some sweet 8K UHDTV action. While most of them will be displayed by projectors, including a 520-inch screen in Shibuya, while Akihabara's Studio Park will feature a 360-inch LCD. The details for UK and US are a bit more vague, but if we have to track where in Washington D.C. NBC is letting the 33MP resolution video and 22.2ch sound out for a trial just by its scent, then that's what we'll have to do.NHK lays out Olympic broadcast plans, Super Hi-Vision test viewing locations in Japan originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 09 Jun 2012 04:37:00 EDT. It's not the first iPhone 4/4S pico projector battery case we've come across here at Engadget, but we spotted this little number at Computex 2012 and just couldn't resist sharing it with you. What makes this accessory a bit more unique is that it incorporates the latest in DLP technology from Texas Instruments. As such, it's capable of projecting a 640x360-pixel image up to 70 inches across with 1000:1 contrast ratio. The 2200mAh battery lasts about 3 hours on a charge an can even top off your iPhone in a pinch. Additional features include a built-in speaker powered by a 0.5W audio amplifier. We spent a few minutes using the pico projector and while it works pretty much as advertised, it clearly struggled with the harsh lighting conditions of the show floor. It's no secret Google's been involved in a few privacy-related kerfuffles around the globe, but some would say those are just the burdens attached to being one of the big-guns in the industry. Still, Big G can go home to Mountain View a happy camper today, as the Swiss Federal Tribunal has decided to ease up on the company's usage of its Street View technology in the country. Per the ruling, however, Google will have to make adjustments to its viewing methods, things like making it easier for folks to manually blur images available on Street View, and full anonymity around hospitals, schools, prisons and courts. Naturally, Google says it's quite pleased with the outcome and that it plans to "look at the ruling closely, discuss it with the federal data protection commissioner and examine what options are available."Swiss court eases up on Street View privacy concerns, Google says it's pleased with the ruling originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jun 2012 23:57:00 EDT. ZTE Tania waves Windows Phone flag for China, makes official mainland debut
When it rains Windows Phone in China, it pours. After HTC claimed top honors for being the first to bow a Redmond-powered handset in the region, the floodgates opened with Nokia quickly doling out its Tango wares and, now, ZTE. The company, formerly a white label manufacturer, has finally gotten its Tania act together, releasing the not-so-secret phone on China Unicom with a slight upgrade to its previously announced spec list. Though most of what it offers falls in line with WP hardware requirements -- 800 x 480 display, 512MB RAM -- the processor's been bumped from 1GHz to 1.4GHz, giving the 4.3-incher a welcome speed boost. Interested parties can also look forward to a 5-megapixel rear shooter, 4GB of storage, as well as black and white color options. Twitter post-to-Facebook integration adds photos, tags and links, makes wild nights more regrettable
Twitter has long had the option to send updates to Facebook, but most of what makes Twitter unique has been stripped out while cross-posting the night's escapades. That's been fixed just in time for the weekend. As of now, Twitter has confirmed to The Next Web that updates will automatically display the first photo as well as link Twitter users' names and any hashtags. The change isn't automatic and will require a quick on-and-off flick of the cross-posting setting before the gobs of extra information make the trip to Facebook. It's just as well -- we'd really rather not make it any easier for Aunt Mildred to see photos of our weekend benders.Twitter post-to-Facebook integration adds photos, tags and links, makes wild nights more regrettable originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jun 2012 22:23:00 EDT. US and Mexico strike public safety spectrum deal along national borders
The FCC announced today that Chairman Julius Genachowski has entered into an agreement with Mexico's telecommunications officials to create a new spectrum sharing scheme along the nation's borders. The move will normalize 800MHz and 1900MHz spectrum use within 68 miles of the common border, and is primarily intended to reduce interference and allow for reliable public safety communications in the region. Further rollout of commercial services is also central to the pact, as Sprint has been authorized to deploy its CDMA service in the 1900MHz spectrum along the border. The move is hardly a free gift, however, as Sprint had previously surrendered a share of its 800MHz holdings to pave way for the agreement. A bi-national task force will oversee the adjustment process, and both nations have agreed to discuss future spectrum coordination along the border in future meetings. Proof that cooperation isn't completely dead, folks. To gain a greater understanding of where both nations are headed, just hop the break for the announcement.Continue reading US and Mexico strike public safety spectrum deal along national bordersUS and Mexico strike public safety spectrum deal along national borders originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jun 2012 20:22:00 EDT. That's what viewers of a two-minute, 21-second video Audi recently posted about its R18 e-tron Quattro racecar will be able to discern. The German automaker, which titled the video "The evolution of racing," included interviews with Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport, as well as Audi factory drivers Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen, who explained the technology behind the car, which will run in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race June 16. Also included are clips of the original Audi Quatrro from the 1980s, and other race and rally cars introduced since then. Check it out right below. The car made its debut last month at the FIA World Endurance Championship race at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. The powertrain includes a turbocharged diesel V6 that powers the rear wheels while a hybrid powertrain moves the front wheels. Audi has been promoting alternative powertrains with pretty moving pictures, recently posting a video spelling out a pilot project in Colorado involving a handful of drivers testing out a battery-electric version of the A3 hatchback.Continue reading Audi flashes us the hybrid R18 e-tron QuattroAudi flashes us the hybrid R18 e-tron Quattro originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 08 Jun 2012 19:55:00 EST. Taiwan's YoungYear Electronics claims to stop the horror with its Green Mesh case, which has neither fans to suck dust, nor filters, and keeps your components cool with a "chimney effect" instead. It's this same action that repels dust out the top, so that only one quarter the usual amount of filth is drawn in -- according to the company. The only downside is that with poor heat dissipation, the maximum power supply unit size is 300 watts -- which probably scratches it off the list for most modders or power-users. For the rest, if you don't mind your computer's innards blowing in the breeze, at least you'd have no nasty case-opening frights.Open-mesh PC case keeps heat, dust bunnies at bay originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jun 2012 19:46:00 EDT. Arthur P. Stern, instrumental in inventing the color television and GPS, passes away
Engadget learned that Arthur P. Stern passed away on May 24th, 2012, but just this week, The Los Angeles Times has published a laudable look back at a man that had an enormous impact on the technology that we rely on -- and, quite frankly, take for granted -- each and every day. Born in 1925 in Budapest, Hungary, Arthur went on to obtain an M.E.E. from Syracuse University, joining General Electric in 1951 and making a near-immediate impact in the realm of television. He's widely credited with pioneering the color TV that we're familiar with today (and holding a related patent -- number 2920132 -- granted in December of 1953), while also publishing initial technical papers on transistor radios. As if that weren't enough, he was also instrumental in the progress of GPS, spearheading the development of key elements in the latter portion of his career. As fantastic as Stern was as an inventor, he was also a beloved grandfather to Joanna Stern, one of the industry's premiere technology reporters. Currently, Joanna works at ABC News, though she has spent time at LAPTOP Magazine, The Verge and right here at Engadget prior. From the entire staff, our deepest sympathies go out to a wonderful colleague and peer. The world has lost a brilliant mind, but on a personal level, a friend has lost much more.Arthur P. Nissan Altima mpg climbs to 31 combined, just under old hybrid version
Filed under: MPG, Nissan Looks like Nissan had a pretty good reason to discontinue the Altima Hybrid last year. The Japanese automaker released EPA figures for its gas-only 2013 Altima and from the fuel economy figures, it's hard to tell the difference. The fifth-generation, four-cylinder Altima gets an EPA-rated 27 miles per gallon city, 38 miles per gallon highway and 31 miles per gallon combined. The Altima Hybrid got 33s across the board. Nissan has just started shipping the new Altimas to dealers. Nissan says that the car's gas tank is big enough to provide 684 miles of highway-cruising range. The company started producing the fifth-generation Altima at its Smyrna, TN factory last month and has since started production at a second plant in Mississippi. Nissan is hoping the Altima, which was the second-best selling car in the U.S. last year, can overtake the Toyota Camry. Last year, the Camry sold about 15 percent more units than the Altima.Continue reading Nissan Altima mpg climbs to 31 combined, just under old hybrid versionNissan Altima mpg climbs to 31 combined, just under old hybrid version originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Fri, 08 Jun 2012 18:02:00 EST.
