Well the arrival of the company's new Video, Game and Music hubs might heal the wounds. Rather than a unified service, the Galaxy S III will have access to three separate stores that will offer an alternative to Google Play. We spent a few minutes having a play, and you can see what it's like after the break. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line. Inventive scribbler Steve King -- no, not that one -- is working his fingers raw trying to raise $25,000 on Kickstarter. His project, the colorfully-named Hand Stylus, works with all your capacitive touchscreens, sports a retractable nib that rotates to avoid uneven wear, and even sticks to the magnet on an iPad. While it can't replace the need for natural digits, it could potentially come in handy while taking notes, sketching, cooking, or experiencing frostbite. Skip down below the break for a video if you need more convincing, or you already lost the one that came with your Galaxy Note.Continue reading Insert Coin: Hand Stylus for touch devicesInsert Coin: Hand Stylus for touch devices originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 May 2012 17:19:00 EDT. Samsung Galaxy S III gets benchmarked, shows plenty of promise Posted: 03 May 2012 02:49 PM PDT Samsung Galaxy S III gets benchmarked, shows plenty of promise ![]() Samsung Galaxy S III gets benchmarked, shows plenty of promise We're here on the floor at the Samsung Galaxy S III launch and we've just managed to get some alone time with the unit to get some benchmarks. Now, let's stress that the handset is a pre-production model, so we can't take these as gospel truth, but it's a good indication of how powerful that Quad-Core Exynos really is. The only thing that isn't working is SunSpider, since our results just didn't tally with the other tests available, so hopefully it's just a quirk. Head on past the break for a dose of nitty and a sprinkling of gritty.Continue reading Samsung Galaxy S III gets benchmarked, shows plenty of promiseSamsung Galaxy S III gets benchmarked, shows plenty of promise originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 May 2012 17:01:00 EDT. Is Google just not doing the trick when it comes to resolution? Well, the folks at Event 38 have got you covered. The outfit's model E382 photomapping UAV kit is now available for $600. Included in that price tag is a pre-assembled Skywalker airframe, 1250 kV brushless motor, motor speed controller, 4x servos, all the requisite cables and the ArduPilot Mega 2.0 autopilot system -- which handles GPS, flight data logs and pressure monitoring. In terms of performance, the drone cruises at a speed of 25MPH with a flight time of around an hour on a 5000mAh battery. The E382 makes use of a point and shoot camera to handle the cartography duties. You can use your own, or Canon A2200s are available for adding on to the kit at checkout. However, you will need to throw down some extra coin for the aforementioned flight battery and a controller. All-electric TukTuk vending van would be right at home on Portlandia Posted: 03 May 2012 01:40 PM PDT All-electric TukTuk vending van would be right at home on Portlandia ![]() All-electric TukTuk vending van would be right at home on Portlandia Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Europe/EU Want to serve some street food out of the back of an eye-catching, zero-emission three-wheeler? You're in luck. The Tuk Tuk Factory, a Dutch company, recently announced an all-electric modified tuktuk called the e-Tuk Vendo. With a range of 70 kilometers (43 miles) and an expected daily schedule that will see it sit still for a few hours at a time, at least, while urban hipsters get their organic tofu curry (yes, we'd like some, too) the bright orange e-Tuk Vendo has a built in refrigerator, water pumps, working table and three cubic meters of storage space. When serving food and plugged in to the utility mains, the battery gets charged. Clever, that. Tuk Tuk Factory also makes electric passenger models, the e-Tuk Classico (for three passengers) and the e-Tuk Limo (for six). The next model will be a cargo van. This summer, the Tuk Tuk Factory will talk about the Tripp, a "brand new vehicle especially for sustainable urban transport." For now, the Vendo is ready for sale in Europe (the company expects to grow sales to a few hundred a year) and prices starts at 24,000 euros ($31,558 U.S. at current exchange rates).Continue reading All-electric TukTuk vending van would be right at home on PortlandiaAll-electric TukTuk vending van would be right at home on Portlandia originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 03 May 2012 16:02:00 EST. It's palm-sized with a single blue LED light indicating a connection, but honestly you don't ever need to look at it: it doesn't need line-of-sight to your handset because it uses a wireless protocol called WiFi Display, which means you can happily leave it dangling out of the way behind your TV. The unit has two cables: one for power and the other for the HDMI connection to your TV, which can transmit up to 1080p video and audio. As you'll see in the hands-on video after the break, it works for direct mirroring, so you can watch movies, play games or reel off holiday slideshows. But it also has a more enterprise-focused feature, in the form of a slideshow function in cahoots with the Polaris Office app, which means you can use your GS III has a controller for a presentation. It's a simple idea, but it all seemed to work smoothly and we can imagine it coming in pretty handy. In the presentation launching the Galaxy S III, the first full half hour was very light on specs, with mention of only one -- the size of the screen (4.8"-huge). Instead, what we got was long on references to intuitive design, with lots of non-tech buzzwords: "nature," "organic," and so on. The Galaxy S III is "really designed for humans" the company said today, again and again. |

Samsung has managed to get an exclusive version of Flipboard for its just-announced Galaxy S III smartphone, and the folks at SlashGear have already taken it for a quick spin. The short version: it's a lot like the iOS app, with the notable exception of some widgets that you can add to the phone's home screen. As for when it will head to other Android phones, Flipboard is only saying that it will be available for "select" phones in the "coming months." Samsung announces SmartStay and S Voice features for the Galaxy S III Posted: 03 May 2012 12:28 PM PDT Samsung announces SmartStay and S Voice features for the Galaxy S III ![]() Samsung announces SmartStay and S Voice features for the Galaxy S III In addition to announcing its newest flagship, the Galaxy S III, along with some nifty photo-sharing features, Samsung has just revealed two more human-friendly features that aim to further differentiate the phone on the software side. These include SmartStay, which cleverly keeps the display from timing out by using the front-facing camera to detect when you're looking at the screen. Meanwhile, S Voice ushers in voice commands, and is the closest thing we've seen to a Siri competitor since Apple introduced that feature on the iPhone 4S. And we have to say, though Android users have long been reveling in voice-activated dialing and Google searches, the list of possible use cases here is quite impressive. In addition to initiating calls, you can wake the phone, request songs, send emails and text messages, use the calendar app, adjust the volume, capture photos, snooze the alarm and inquire about the weather. For now, Samsung says this feature will support eight languages, including, among others, Spanish, German, Korean and American / British English. Still, we wouldn't put it past Samsung to teach the GS III a few more languages once it gets that whole "launching in 145 countries" thing out of the way.Samsung announces SmartStay and S Voice features for the Galaxy S III originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 May 2012 14:29:00 EDT. CBO: new CAFE rules will short Highway Trust Fund by $57b by 2022 Posted: 03 May 2012 11:17 AM PDT CBO: new CAFE rules will short Highway Trust Fund by $57b by 2022 ![]() CBO: new CAFE rules will short Highway Trust Fund by $57b by 2022 Filed under: MPG, Legislation and Policy, USA Oh, the gas tax, always a contentious issue. We've covered it throughout the years but now the Congressional Budget Office is reminding us that the time has come to move well beyond simple discussion and politics: the Highway Trust Fund is not getting enough money to pay for the transportation infrastructure that America needs. As you can see in the chart above, the Fund has not taken in more money than it spent since 2001, except for one time in 2006. In 2008, 2009 and 2010, the Highway Fund got money from the General Fund to pay for things like highway repairs and various mass transit programs. Since the Highway Trust Fund is mostly paid for by the gas tax, that number plays a big roll in how much money America has to build bridges. Before we move on, though, it's time for a question.View Poll We've asked this before, but polls are fun. The answer, and more discussion, can be found below.Continue reading CBO: new CAFE rules will short Highway Trust Fund by $57b by 2022CBO: new CAFE rules will short Highway Trust Fund by $57b by 2022 originally appeared on AutoblogGreen on Thu, 03 May 2012 14:14:00 EST. But which phones ought to be considered flagships worthy of comparison with the shiny new GS III? Yes, we're including the Lumia 900 in this context, for the sake of platform neutrality and also in recognition of the fact that raw specs don't count for everything -- but we can't overlook that this handset is sorely lacking in terms of ppi and some other areas. Under the microscope: Samsung Galaxy S III's HD Super AMOLED display Posted: 03 May 2012 11:17 AM PDT Under the microscope: Samsung Galaxy S III's HD Super AMOLED display ![]() Under the microscope: Samsung Galaxy S III's HD Super AMOLED display By now you should already know that the brand-spanking-new Samsung Galaxy S III sports a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display. That's right: no "plus" here, which means this 720p panel is featuring the same old PenTile RBGB pixel arrangement -- just like the 4.65-inch version on the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S II HD LTE. Needless to say, this is again pure ammunition for the folks over at LG; but as we've mentioned before, HD Super AMOLED's superb contrast and higher-than-before pixel density outweigh its shortcomings in most cases. For now though, let's examine these sub-pixels with a 230x zoom USB microscope and compare them with other phones that we have in hand. Starting off with the HTC One X's 720p SLCD 2 above, you can see how its denser sub-pixels produce a finer picture, but ultimately it's still behind HD Super AMOLED when it comes to contrast, especially with black. Read on for more comparisons. Posted: 03 May 2012 11:17 AM PDT Samsung Galaxy S III focuses on photography sharing features, not cutting-edge optics ![]() Samsung Galaxy S III focuses on photography sharing features, not cutting-edge optics Samsung's Galaxy S III doesn't boast 41-megapixel captures or top-of-the-line optics. Instead, its camera's strengths are in its intelligent organization and social features, increasing the handset's appeal as a point-and-shoot alternative for casual photographers. Samsung's latest round of compacts and mirrorless dedicated snappers reaffirm suspicions that the company is taking a different approach to photography, focusing on connectivity and social enhancements, rather than updated sensor and low-light shooting technologies. While such decisions may prompt advanced shooters to bring their business to competitors, it highlights Samsung's strengths on a broader level, as a connectivity enabler, rather than a camera maker. The company is clearly committed to growing its ecosystem and uniting product divisions in an effort to increase penetration throughout different categories, developing sharing tools that simplify workflows and increase appeal. Samsung's latest flagship smartphone packs standard specs, like 8-megapixel stills and 1080p video, but it offers a handful of software features that combine to make the device a compelling upgrade, especially from an imaging perspective. Join us past the break as we detail the Galaxy S III's photography enhancements, from Best Photo to Face Zoom.Continue reading Samsung Galaxy S III focuses on photography sharing features, not cutting-edge opticsSamsung Galaxy S III focuses on photography sharing features, not cutting-edge optics originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 May 2012 14:01:00 EDT. Samsung Galaxy S III preview: hands-on with the next Android superphone (video) Posted: 03 May 2012 11:17 AM PDT Samsung Galaxy S III preview: hands-on with the next Android superphone (video) ![]() Samsung Galaxy S III preview: hands-on with the next Android superphone (video) You remember that Galaxy S II? A phone so good they launched it, well, a whole load of times. But after seeing phablet cousins and LTE variants, the true handset sequel is finally here. The Galaxy S III is moments away from being outed in front of journalists and Sammy's business partners in London, but in advance of the big reveal we were given a few hours to acquaint ourselves with the new star away from the crush of the show floor. And what did we make of it? In short, Samsung's tried to bring its Galaxy S series in line with (and in some ways, further ahead of) what its team-up with Google accomplished. It's added some new quad-core Exynos processing juice, a 4.8-inch, HD Super AMOLED screen and a handful of Galaxy S III-only features in an earnest bid to maintain its place at the top of the Android pile. You'll find our detailed impressions and a hands-on video just after the break. Posted: 03 May 2012 11:17 AM PDT Samsung Galaxy S III is official: 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, quad-core Exynos processor and gesture functions ![]() Samsung Galaxy S III is official: 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, quad-core Exynos processor and gesture functions The Galaxy S III is Samsung's new flagship smartphone and it's finally broken cover at the company's stand-alone Mobile Unpacked event here in London. With a steady stream of fakes, outright leaks and even event rescheduling, Samsung's claimed almost crazy levels of interest for its new smartphone. Weighing in at 133g (4.7 ounces) and whittled to 8.6mm at its thickest, the rounded-off design has more than a little bit in common with its Galaxy Nexus cousin. Of course, it's Samsung's new 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor doing the legwork, and there's 1GB of RAM to help it out. The display has been bumped up in size to a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED affair, sporting a 1280 x 720 pixel count. Happy snappers will have an 8-megapixel rear shooter to play with, and a 1.9-megapixel eye on the front will take care of those video calls. If you were wondering about radios, it's launching with HSPA+, but there's an LTE version in the cards. As for the interface, it's TouchWiz on top of Android 4.0 again, and there's new gesture functions to help you get around. So, there it is, the phone we've all been waiting for (until the next one) but that's not all, be sure to check our hands-on coverage and additional features for the in-depth breakdown.Samsung Galaxy S III is official: 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, quad-core Exynos processor and gesture functions originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 May 2012 14:00:00 EDT.
