Ford's environment and safety chief Sue Cischke retiring

Ford's environment and safety chief Sue Cischke retiring
Filed under: Etc., Ford We've heard from Ford's Sue Cischke many times over the years, about things like the Escape Plug-in Hybrid test program and the overall state of the green car industry. We won't be hearing from her much in the future, though, at least not in her role as the Ford group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering....

Apple's founding documents pull in $1.6 million at auction

Apple's founding documents pull in $1.6 million at auction
Over two weeks ago, the internets were abuzz with talk of Apple's founding documents hitting the auction block. Word was, they'd rake in a sizable $150,000 on the high-end, but it appears even Sotheby's underestimated the power of paperwork. The three sheets of dead tree in question, signed by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne (Apple's often forgotten third founder) fetched a whopping $1.6 million dollars today....

Gemalto chosen by Isis to keep its NFC and mobile payment service secure

Gemalto chosen by Isis to keep its NFC and mobile payment service secure
Let's face it: one of the only ways we'll ever see mobile payments become mainstream is to get the general public on board. To do so, we have to be confident it's safe, and mobile wallets are currently viewed as anything but. Isis, the joint NFC venture between AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, understands this, and just announced that it's teamed up with Gemalto to deploy a Trusted Service Manager to provide...

As webOS Goes Open Source, HP Loses Another Developer Relations Guy

As webOS Goes Open Source, HP Loses Another Developer Relations Guy
Yikes, talk about unfortunate timing. With HP having just recently announced that webOS is going open source, the last thing they need is for their (small, but surprisingly capable) developer community to start falling apart. They lost Richard Kerris, VP of Worldwide Developer Relations, to Nokia back in late October — and today, another of their Developer Relations guys is headed for the door. Chuq Von Respach, Community Head for webOS Developer...

NTSB Recommends Nationwide Ban On Mobile Device Use While Driving
If the National Transportation Safety Board has their way, talking (or texting, or tweeting) on the phone while driving would be a thing of the past. The regulatory body recommended today that use of any handheld device while driving a car should be banned nationwide. The recommendation came about while the NTSB board discussed a tragic multi-vehicle motoring accident in Gray Summit, Missouri that began when a driver using a cell phone...

Fisker hikes Karma price... again... now above $100k
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Fisker When you're starting up a new luxury automaker - especially a high-end one - it's easy for prices to quickly escalate beyond their anticipated targets. And that's just what's happened with the Fisker Karma. Way back when (in 2008), the upstart automaker was talking about selling the Karma for $80,000....

AT&T, Sprint and C Spire halt suits over T-Mobile acquisition, wireless competition to die another day
It's never nice to beat a dead horse when it's down and the same seems to be true for the litigious mudslinging Ma Bell's had to endure. Now that the nation's second largest carrier has been granted a stay in its pending and publicly messy T-Mobile acquisition, vocal opponents like Sprint and C Spire are withdrawing their respective suits (and fangs) to block the merger for the time being....

Microsoft launches SkyDrive app for Windows Phone and iPhone, forms No Androids Club
Microsoft's love affair with iOS isn't over yet. Hot on the heels of an iPad-supporting OneNote update and the App Store debut of Kinectimals, comes an official SkyDrive app for the iPhone. Of course, the Redmond crew isn't leaving its own handsets out in the cold. Windows Phone 7 is also getting an app to compliment its already rather deep integration with cloud storage service....

Researchers claim to have developed 'smallest conceivable switch'
A team of researchers at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (or TUM) led by Dr. Willi Auwaerter and Professor Johannes Barth appear to have made something of a breakthrough on the road to the miniaturization of everything. They've devised a molecular switch that measures just one square nanometer, but is able to switch between four distinct states on demand....

Jay Leno takes a gander at High Voltage, a new book on electric vehicles
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Videos Our friend Jim Motavalli can easily play the absent-minded professor, but he's whip-smart when it comes to fuel-efficient vehicles. Back in 2000, he wrote a book called "Forward Drive: The Race to Build "Clean" Cars for the Future" and he's just followed that up with a new tome called "High Voltage: The Fast Track to Plug In the Auto Industry." It's because of this new book that he...

Early Atom N2600 benchmark, can't cedar wood for the trails?
It goes without saying that benchmarking something pre-release requires a cavalcade of sodium-chloride, but our curiousity was piqued at the prospect of some Cedar Trail sneak-peeks. Netbook Live has been at it again, pitting a 1.6GHz Atom N2600-touting ASUS Eee PC X101CH, against machines sporting 1.66GHz Atom N570 (ASUS 1015PX) and 1.0 GHz AMD C-50 (ASUS 1015B and Tosh NB550D) chips....

Android Market's big sale hits Day 8, sense of deja vu increases
Is the Android Market running out of apps to offer its sales-hungry users? Hell's apparently frozen over, pigs are indeed flying and, yes, the gods must be crazy because Microsoft Studios has just released Kinectimals, its Tamagotchi-like "mobile experience" with tiger cubs, to the App Store. The $2.99 app brings the isle of Lemuria directly to your iOS device of choice, letting you nurture these fledgling digital felines, in addition to unlocking a handful of them on a companion Xbox 360 title of the...

Report: Android Apps Make Only 24 Percent As Much As iOS Apps
Google chairman Eric Schmidt recently boasted at Le Web that "Android is ahead of the iPhone." And that may be true in terms of how many mobile devices with the Android operating system are being activated daily (550,000 versus 450,000 daily for Apple's iOS, at last count). If Android has the numbers, why aren't more developers flocking to Apple? The answer is simple....
