BMW i3 REx spotted packing range-extending engine
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, BMW, Spy Shots It's been a while since we've seen prototypes of the BMW i3 making the rounds around Germany, but today we get a glimpse of the entry-level EV with new body work and possibly fitted with a range-extending engine. When the i3 was revealed earlier this year, BMW engineers divulged to Autoblog that the automaker plans to fit a 600cc, two-cylinder engine pull from its motorcycle line...

Four Of The Best Apps From Microsoft's NYC Mobile Acceleration Week
If you've been paying attention this morning, you're perhaps somewhat aware of a program Microsoft has in place called Mobile Acceleration Week (part of its BizSpark program), where 12 hand-picked startups can access hands-on support and training to build compelling apps for the Windows Phone platform. MAWs happen all over the world all year long, but I was lucky enough to catch up with some of the participants of New York's...

DARPA to develop biometric sensor capable of seeing through walls, pulling your heartstrings
The feds may soon know the way to your heart. Literally. Earlier this month, the forward-thinkers over at DARPA announced plans to develop new technologies capable of identifying human life through walls. The program, known as "Biometrics-at-a-distance," would essentially combine two pre-existing Pentagon projects: the Radar Scope, a device that can see through walls, and 2009's LifeReader, a system that uses Doppler radar to detect heartbeats....

Hackers attempt to access AT&T customer records, prompts millions to Rethink Passwords
See that door above? Well, a few fellas who know their ones and zeroes appear to have gotten close to busting down its virtual equivalent, AT&T admitted in an email to customers this morning. It turns out that hackers were hard at work trying to access online account information, but we were told by company reps that the carrier discovered the attempt and shut it down before any security breach occurred....

Klipsch Gallery G-17 Air soundbar review
If you'll recall, it was back at CES when we realized that AirPlay devices would be "set to explode" by this year's end -- and it's certainly proving true as a storm of new speakers have hit the market over the last few months. Of all the speakers we'd spotted on the show floor, however, a select bunch AirPlay-enabled speakerbar prototypes from Klipsch's newly unveiled Gallery lineup of high-performance home audio...

CTIA And ESRB To Unveil New Mobile App Rating System

CTIA And ESRB To Unveil New Mobile App Rating System
Here's something I'm sure no one expected to see today: the CTIA Wireless Trade Association has just issued a release stating that they have struck a partnership with the Entertainment Software Rating Board in order to start rating mobile applications. Yes, really. The ESRB, if you've managed to avoid picking up a video game in the last decade or so, are the folks that decide how appropriate a game is for certain...

HP releases 2011 Q4 earnings: $9.7 billion operating profit for fiscal year 2011
It hasn't been the best year for HP, what with the demise of webOS and the uncertainty surrounding its status as a PC maker. But, Meg Whitman hasn't taken the bridge of a sunken ship, though things are far from peachy keen. HP just posted its Q4 2011 earnings, and the company cleared a healthy $9.7 billion operating profit in 2011, though that's down 10 percent from last year....

Amazon Wireless drops all Verizon, AT&T and Sprint phones to a penny, will not be undersold
Don't be so quick to file this one under "duh!" -- Amazon's added a whole lotta sweetener to its usual smartphone-for-a-penny pot. If your frugal heart's been holding out hope for a discounted drop of the high-end mobile goods, now would be the time to pounce. The Seattle-based web retailer's wireless arm is throwing every phone from Sprint, Verizon and AT&T under the $0.01 umbrella for a limited time....

GM teams with Magna E-Car Systems to electrify a Chevrolet Equinox fleet

Calling on the E-Car Systems unit of Magna to do the technological heavy lifting - the same folks who helped Ford develop its Focus Electric - and with a little financial help from the Ontario government, the project...

Google's iOS search app gets a major overhaul, brings instant goodies to iPad users
Dismayed that Google's previous iOS tablet app was merely a thin wrapper around a glorified web view? That duress ends today, as the company's just released a significant overhaul to its mobile search app -- one that, frankly, makes it worthy of your home screen. Headlining the release is the ability to view search results in a slidable tab, enabling you to quickly oscillate between search results and those you've tapped....

Sky+ app gets Series Links just in time for them to become irrelevent
Demanding American consumers make sure that if a DVR app doesn't ship with global Spotify support or HDD-managment capabilities, it's kicked to the kerb. Demure UK consumers command less respect -- we're happy if our software does anything useful at all. That's why Sky hasn't rushed in updating its Sky+ app for iOS and Android, but in December it'll finally enable users to add Series Links (like Season Passes, only shorter...

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus review
We've already established that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a great tablet. Then, just recently, we summarily found that the 1.2-inch smaller Galaxy Tab 8.9 is an even better tablet -- at least for anyone who wants to take their slate places. So, following that logic, the even more petite Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus should be the best of the three, right? Not so fast....

To Build Or Not To Build, That Is The Windows Phone App Dev Question
A while back, I used one of my phone reviews as a platform to make a desperate, but necessary, plea to developers: Please build cool apps for Windows Phone 7.5. Come to find Microsoft had been making the same plea for a while, with an entire program dedicated to courting developers through the migration....
