Siri Cracked Open, Theoretically Opening It Up To Other Devices (Or Even Android!)

Siri Cracked Open, Theoretically Opening It Up To Other Devices (Or Even Android!)
Serving as a stark reminder that there are people on the Internet who are way, way too damned clever, the guys over at the iPhone design/development house Applidium claim to have cracked open Siri to take an unsanctioned look at its (her? his?) inner workings. In a rare — but quite welcome (I mean, by us....

Consumer Reports: Large majority favor stronger fuel economy standards
Filed under: MPG, Legislation and Policy, USA In advance of eagerly awaited details regarding proposed Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, Consumer Reports has released results of a new survey, and - no surprise here - 93 percent of respondents "support increased fuel efficiency." Further revelations include 77 percent in favor of car manufacturers producing more fuel-efficient vehicles, and 80 percent agreeing with fuel economy standards requiring fleet averages to top 55 miles...

That's according to GM of Windows Embedded, Kevin Dallas, who says the tech giant is on track to create a new category for the division that centers around "intelligent solutions." It appears the time is ripe for "low-cost... high-powered microchips" to take advantage of MS' emerging cloud services and integrate means of delivering data and immersive experiences to both enterprise and...

The Death Of The Spec

The Death Of The Spec
Earlier today, my colleague Matt Burns wrote a post noting that most tablet makers may be largely failing because they've sold their soul to Android and are now just in the middle of a spec war, which no one can win. I'm gonna go one step further in that line of thinking: the spec is dead. There have been a few key stories from the past couple of weeks that highlight this...

Did The BBX-Powered BlackBerry London Just Break Cover?
RIM has been caught in rough waters for the past few months, and RIM has made no secret of the fact that their hopes for the future are pinned on BBX and their new BlackBerrys. The Verge has managed to get a picture of what may be the company's first BBX-powered BlackBerry, and — to my surprise — it's a handsome piece of kit. Code-named "London," the device bears a slight resemblance...

QNX-based BlackBerry 'London' purportedly shown off, dummy unit-style
If the above image is to be trusted, what you spy with your little eye may be the very first BlackBerry smartphone to sport RIM's QNX-based operating system, known more recently as BBX. With bold angular lines that smack heavily of the P'9981, this touchscreen slab (code-named "London") is said to be thinner than the iPhone 4 and will dutifully stand tall when placed on its side....

T-Mo invites us to 'Experience the World of T-Mobile & Google' with Busta Rhymes as our guide
We're still having fun coming up with reasons why Google decided to have its next "special event" in Los Angeles -- popular choices include "easy access to geothermal power" and "trying to help LA fall into the sea, already" -- but now things are looking a little more clear. A star-studded event happening later that night has been announced, hosted by T-Mobile and featuring Drake, Maroon 5, Busta Rhymes, Dirty South...

Comics on the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet hands-on (video)
Way back in 2000, cartoonist turned comics theorist Scott McCloud discussed infinite canvas in his book Reinventing Comics. The concept, simply put, is that electronic mediums afford artists an infinite space on which to create their work. Cartoonists should, therefore, take advantage of this new found freedom. Of course, old media companies don't operate that way, and for the past decade or so, the quest has revolved around finding the most...

Google Maps Android app update gentrifies Places, Live Events forces Twitter out
Android's Google Maps has been given an extra nudge, reaching the dizzying heights of five-point-twelve-point-oh. So what's changed? Well, for starters, the ability to post to Twitter has been nixed from the Places pages, replaced by the natty ability to see what's going on in places nearby. Giving it a try in London, it's got a pretty broad remit, and covers live music, plays and even museum exhibitions....

Samsung drops plan to file Apple suit in Korea, will battle in 'the global market' instead
A Samsung executive revealed to Korean Newspaper The Chosun Ilbo today that it will drop its plans to pursue Apple for patent violations in Korea, instead focusing efforts on cases overseas. The anonymous exec cited performance in his company's home country, saying "we concluded that we should engage in legal battles with Apple only in the global market, but not in order to gain more market share in Korea." The move...

LTE Galaxy Tab 8.9 coming to AT&T on November 20th for $480

Slow-selling Lexus HS 250h already getting the axe?
Lexus may stop production of the HS 250h. Reports have emerged that the model is suffering from flagging sales and that the luxury automaker may seek to replace the vehicle with a less-expensive, more youth-oriented product in the near future. Last month, Lexus managed to sell just 250 HS 250h units, which is a decline of 72.8 percent compared to the same (already low) period last year....

Add lasers to a tennis ball, drive your dog crazy (video)
It's a "programmable disco ball," a "cat toy for humans," and a "personal laser light show," all rolled into one. That's how one Matt Leone describes his latest creation, aptly known as the Laser Ball. To realize his dream, Leone drilled a set of holes into a garden variety tennis ball, and inserted about 14 laser diodes, each with an attached strip of diffraction grating....

But if you were left outside of the webOS mourning soiree and are still keen to call that HP tab your own, TigerDirect's got a slew of the slates ready for the taking. You won't find that seductive sub-$100 price here, however, the web retailer is offering a rebate that'll cut the 32GB slate down to...

HTC Jetstream review
When HTC entered the tablet game, it did so in reverse course. Where other manufacturers were jostling for elbow room in a 10-inch form factored world, the company opted for smaller, more familiar battleground, eschewing the rough-hewn Honeycomb OS for a Gingerbread-baked Sense overlay on the Flyer. Naturally, the time for that mini-slate to shine has come and gone....
