Google thinks your digital books belong on a digital bookcase, digitally (video)
How to best view the Google Books collections? Why, a digital bookcase, of course. But this isn't just any bookcase, it's a giant spinning 3D helix of a bookcase, collecting more than 10,000 titles in 28 subjects. Users can navigate the WebGL Bookcase by spinning it around or swiping it up and down....

Average fuel efficiency rises to 22.4 mpg for Model Year 2011 vehicles
Filed under: MPG, USA If Americans can't buy fuel efficient vehicles, then they're not going to do so. Between July and September, passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. averaged 22.2 miles per gallon, down from 22.5 mpg in the second quarter of 2011. It's believed that the decline in fuel economy was due to extremely low inventories, particularly of subcompacts and compacts, as a result of the quake in Japan on March 11. Ward's...

Motorola locks RAZR bootloader, angers ROM-happy lovers of anorexic handsets
Like the Droid 3 before it, Motorola's Droid RAZR will be shipping with a locked bootloader -- despite the company's promise to start unlocking its handsets. Sure, the Atrix is ripe for the hacking, but it seems like Verizon really doesn't want Moto encouraging its customers to start mucking around with custom ROMs....

Intel earnings beat company records: $14.3 billion revenue, $3.7 billion net income
Apple may not have fared as well as expected in its own Q4, but just up the road in Silicon Valley Intel managed to exceed analyst predictions, posting record revenue of $14.3 billion -- up $3.2 billion, or 29 percent year-over-year. The company also set new records for microprocessor units shipped, and expects further growth over the next quarter, with notebook computer sales driving $14.7 billion in predicted Q4 revenue....

Apple Q4 earnings fall short of expectations: $28.27 billion in revenue, $6.62 billion net profit
Apple's earnings for Q4 2011 are out, and the company has fallen short of expectations. It still managed to rake in $28.27 billion during the quarter, which is up from $20.3 billion in Q3 2010, but quite a bit short of the $29.69 billion analysts were counting on -- net profits came in at $6.62 billion....

Hori Tactical Assault Commander 3 PS3 keyboard and mouse: for fans of butch peripherals
Peripheral makers often give their devices preposterous names -- remember when you asked your grandparents for that Thrustmaster? Hori has outdone itself with the Tactical Assault Commander 3, which won't allow you to command any sort of tactical assault outside of your PS3. Admittedly, when you settle down in front of the TV, you'll see it's got some pretty useful features....

This morning, Motorola dropped a bit of a surprise with the MOTO ACTV, an iPod Nano-esque thimble of a device. Does the world need another tiny, crappy audio player? Probably not. But what about a tiny, Android-powered audio player that focuses on gauging exercise? Still, probably not — but hey, it'll be fun to hack! Now, lets be clear: the idea of a device that gauges your athletic ability isn't a new...

Doxie Go portable scanner creates searchable PDFs without a PC, syncs to almost anything
As far as scanners go, Doxie makes some of the more interesting products on the market. There's one problem though... the bright trail of hot pint hearts splashed across the front. Thankfully, the upcoming Doxie Go dons a more conservative shell that will look just as at home in a CEO's office as it would in a 16-year-old girl's bedroom....

Ultra HDTV technical standards agreed on, more pixels is a good thing
The high-definition pride of your living room may not want to hear it, but it looks like ultra high-definition TV (or UHDTV) has now taken another step towards reality. While shop-floor products remain years away, experts in the ITU Study Group on Broadcasting Service have made several agreements on technical standards for your (next?) next TV purchase....

We expect to be hearing plenty more about Ice Cream Sandwich before the day is out, but that doesn't mean there isn't still room for some last-minute leaks. We know we wouldn't, but that's exactly what Lisa Osborne of Ontario, Canada did in late September. Bill Gross Explains What's Different About Chime.in: "You Can Follow A Part Of A Person"
Bill Groos was just on stage to officially introduce UberMedia's latest product, Chime.in. The app hit iTunes yesterday. It is an online mobile social network built around interests. We've been seeing a lot of companies trying to tackle the interest graph lately, and Chime.in is the latest. Chime.in does this by layering the interest graph on top of the social graph (the connections between people you know)....

It wouldn't be a Motorola event without a glut of accessories, and boy howdy did the company deliver on that front. Sure, the Droid RAZR may not actually be out yet, but when it does hit, the handset will have plenty of things to hold it, dock it, charge it and stream stuff from it....

Motorola Droid RAZR hits FCC with Verizon LTE, global GSM radio
Surprisingly, Motorola seems to have been taken a page out of Apple's book, as the Droid RAZR was curiously approved by the FCC almost immediately after it was announced. And there's some good stuff to behold in here, too; in addition to the usual Verizon-friendly LTE Band 13 radio with CDMA 800 / 1900 support, we also found instances of GSM and WCDMA....

So when Motorola teased its "faster, thinner, smarter, stronger" event we were pretty sure that was a not-so-subtle reference to the 7mm-thick Droid RAZR. As it turns out, the company was also being quite literal. Instead of a Xoom 2, the outfit rounded out its New York City presser with Motoactv, an iPod Nano-like touchscreen device that plays music and keeps track of your various fitness vitals....

To everyone who rocked a Motorola RAZR in the '00s, it's time to get excited again. The line -- or at least the name -- has been reborn, and not without good reason. This is a thin device -- extremely thin. The Droid RAZR by Motorola is 7.1mm thin, in fact, and holding it up next to the iPhone 4 makes Apple's phone look downright beefy by comparison....
