Biofuel consumption slows in European Union
Filed under: Biodiesel, Ethanol, Europe/EU, UK By 2050, biofuels could account for up to 27 percent of the world's total worldwide transportation fuel, according to a report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA). This, according to the IEA, would require biofuel consumption to rise to more than 750 million tons by 2050, up from 55 million tons today, but if the European Union's latest biofuel data gives us an accurate indication...

NVIDIA, Fusion-io and HP drive a dozen 1080p streams on four displays at SIGGRAPH (video)
A dozen uncompressed 1080p video feeds, simultaneously running off a single workstation. Yep, you're looking at it. NVIDIA's showcase piece here at SIGGRAPH was undoubtedly this wall -- a monster that trumps even Intel's CES wall in terms of underlying horsepower. A relatively stock HP Z800 workstation was loaded with the NVIDIA QuadroPlex 7000 Visual Computing System (that's four GPUs, for those counting) in order to push four HD panels....

Apple's Trade-In Program Just Got So Much Better
If you were thinking about dumping that old piece of gadgetry in the trash bin, hold up for a second. Whatever excuse you had for not recycling just lost all its validity, since Apple has restructured its trade-in program to account for nearly any gadget you're ready to part with, including non-Apple devices....

Amazon snatches up Kindle related domains, Kindle Air rumors start circulating
Honestly, we're not sure what to make of all the rumors and leaks surrounding Amazon recently. It's safe to assume the company is working on a tablet, and we're long overdue for an update to E-Ink Kindle. But, a recent round of domain registrations has sent the interwebs into a tizzy with some suggesting a new product, dubbed the Kindle Air, is in the pipeline....

Android developer Yifan Lu has reverse engineered the Xperia Play's native PlayStation emulator to make it run ripped PSX ISOs. That means you're no longer limited to Crash Bandicoot or the handful of other PSX titles that have officially trickled out from Sony Ericsson. Instead, you can grab your original games from the attic, rip them into disc images, and bring them back to life on your Play....

Facebook introduces separate Messenger app for iPhone and Android
It's not clear if its recently acquired group messaging firm, Beluga, had anything to do with it or not, but Facebook has branched out further into the increasingly crowded messaging space today with the announcement of a separate Facebook Messenger app. Available for iPhone and Android, the app lets you send messages directly to individual friends or groups, which they'll of course receive instantly (a la BBM, Huddle for Google+, and...

Use Your PS3 Controller On Your Android Phone Using This App
One issue I've had with Android superphones, with their dual cores and their gigawhats, is that there just isn't much of a use for them. Android apps are mostly made for the lowest common denominator, hardware-wise, and aside from a few 3D games and cool (but impractical) HD video playback, you can't really use those extra cycles for anything without really diving into device customization....

Nokia To Kill Symbian Efforts In North America
If you were to sit down and look at all the devices Nokia has for sale in the United States, you may come away thinking that they weren't in the business of making impressive devices. With only a few exceptions, Nokia's domestic offerings are low-end, S40-powered talk-and-texters — hardly what one would expect from the self-proclaimed "world leader" of the cell phone industry. It seems as though the higher-ups at Nokia are...

While Windows Phone junkies are still waiting on their Mango fix to arrive, details about Redmond's next update are already starting to emerge. Tentatively dubbed "Tango", the update will likely be wedged between its fruity predecessor and the forthcoming Windows Phone 8. Details are still scarce, but ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley has a few ideas about where Tango will take us that Mango won't. According to her anonymous sources, Tango is "all...

We know that Symbian isn't dying any time soon, but here in the US of A the little OS that couldn't quite captivate our picky buyers will soon be mighty hard to find. Speaking with All Things D, Chris Weber, President of Nokia's US operations, said "When we launch Windows Phones we will essentially be out of the Symbian business, the S40 business, etc." That means no more full-price or business-focused...

iStoryTime Closes $2M Series A To Make More Mobile Children's Books
Times, they are a changin'. Magazines are falling at the feet of their digital replacements, while the printed book feels the burn of affordable, portable reading devices. And yet, we still seem to cling to one category of the binded book (if only for nostalgia's sake): the children's book. But for how long? iStoryTime, a publisher who releases "books" (in interactive app form) exclusively for mobile devices, has just closed a 2...

The Lonesome Death Of WebOS
I'd been hoping I wouldn't have to say this a second time, but here we go again: WebOS is reaching a critical failure point and I doubt the technology will make it through the next two years. Why? Because WebOS just can't grab the mindshare it needs to flourish. According to Woot, the deal site sold 612 TouchPads during its impressive $100-off sale....

Microbots do heavy-lifting, self-repair, dance aquatic ballet (video)
Scientists at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory are talking up a type of millimeter-sized microbots that can swim and use their "jaws" to move around objects multiple times their own weight. The tiny 'bots are made up of microparticles and don't do much on their own, but once magnets are applied, they form star shapes and swim around, even opening and closing to push around non-magnetic objects....

The MySaver Keeps Your iPhone Cable From Breaking For The 100th Time
Apple makes a lot of things remarkably well. Cables… are not one of those things. Up until Apple overhauled their laptop chargers to this latest revision, I was inadvertently destroying one every 3-4 months — but that's nothing compared to how many iPhone cables I've chewed through. Really: I could probably use my pile of retired iPhone cables to knit you a very stiff, uncomfortable hat. I figured I was just particularly...
