261 charging stations installed in Portugal; 1,350 coming soon
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Europe/EUThanks to AutoblogGreen tipster Marcos, we now know that at least 261 charging stations have been installed and are operational in Portugal. While that certainly seems like plenty, especially since only 100 or so electric vehicles are currently tooling around the streets of that country, there are apparently 1,000 additional chargers to come. Technically, Mobi.E is the "Portuguese electric mobility consortium," which basically means that it's more or less...

MetroPCS will begin transition to VoLTE early next year
US carriers were quick to acknowledge their allegiance to Voice over LTE (VoLTE), a 4G VoIP-related technology first demonstrated in February. Ever since that time, however, talk of deployment plans have been replaced by crickets. MetroPCS was the first to break the silence, as CEO Roger Linquist announced at this morning's quarterly earnings call that his company's "planning to begin introducing VoLTE-capable handsets early next year to move voice as well...

OCZ's Z-Drive R4 PCIe SSD offers 2,800MB/sec, 500,000 IOPS, plenty of thrills
Hard to believe that we spotted OCZ Technology's original Z-Drive at CeBIT 2009. Just over two full years have passed, and already we've seen the 600MB/sec claims offered on that fellow eclipsed by a few successors. Today, the latest in the line is making its debut, with the Z-Drive R4 offering 2,800MB/sec and over 500,000 IOPS with a single SuperScale controller; step up to a dualie, and you'll see 5,600MB/sec transfer...

Hybrid sales rebound in July, Toyota Prius leads with 7,907
Filed under: Hybrid, Honda, Toyota, USA It's that time of month again. July 2011 sales in the U.S. have been tallied, including, of course, hybrid vehicles. It's worth pointing out that quake-related vehicle production issues have begun to subside, so output of most hybrids manufactured in Japan isn't nearly as restricted as prior months. This time 'round, Toyota Prius sales came in at 7,907 units, up tremendously from the 4,340 units sold in...

RIBA-II healthcare robot now stronger, smarter -- still a bear
RIKEN's original RIBA healthcare robot was already fairly adept at lifting patients while not completely terrifying them but, as is the case with such things, it's now been succeeded by a new and improved model. While its outward, bear-like appearance hasn't changed, the new bot boasts a series of upgrades that now lets it bend over and lift patients up directly off the floor, not just off a bed or wheelchair....

Report: data centers accounted for just 1 to 1.5 percent of electricity use last year, Google claims less than 1 percent of that
You'd think, watching companies like Apple break ground on sprawling data centers, that the number of servers powering our untethered lives was on the rise. In a different decade, you might have been right. But not this one. According to a study prepared at the request of The New York Times, the number of servers in use has declined "significantly" since 2005....

While Angry Birds tends to get all the credit for being the game that has endlessly owned the App Store, it's not alone up at the top. ZeptoLab/Chillingo's Cut The Rope was the first game to come along and (temporarily) knock the Birds from their #1 spot back in October of 2010 — and in the months since, it's rarely spent any time not in the top ten. Intel may still be king of the microprocessing hill, but from the looks of IDC's latest market report, scrappy underdog AMD is starting to claim more of the $9.5 billion dollar pie. The semiconductor stalwarts faced off in four separate market categories with runner-up AMD seeing gains in all, save for servers where its paltry 5.5 percent share dropped 0.6 percent versus Intel's commanding 94.5 percent lead....
