Nokia's online stores go offline in France and Spain

Nokia's online stores go offline in France and Spain
Nokia's "around breakeven" outlook announced earlier today is discouraging at best, and now it looks like the company has begun shuttering online stores in response to growing competition from resellers, which offer lower prices on the same hardware. So far, online stores in France and Spain have been replaced with a closure notice, so customers in those countries will need to turn to third-party vendors to get their smartphone fix....

Galaxy S Gingerbread update lands in the UK, better late than never
So, Samsung missed that mid-May target date for the Galaxy S Gingerbread update... after already aborting an earlier push to Google's latest and greatest in mid-April. But, time for some cautious optimism -- it appears that Android 2.3 is finally here for Sammy's carrier-agnostic former flagship. A reader from the UK wrote in to let us know that he fired up Kies today and voilà -- firmware version 2.3.3....

Nielsen: Android's Lead On iOS Plateaus, Data Usage Spikes
According to Neilsen's May survey, not much has changed by way of smartphone operating systems in the past month. Android, iOS and BlackBerry OS are at a standstill, posting the same market share numbers they did last month. Android still controls 36 percent of the market, with iOS trailing at 27 percent, and BlackBerry OS rounding out the top three with a 22 percent market share....

BlackBerry finally sees competition within US government

BlackBerry finally sees competition within US government
Despite our commander-in-chief's seemingly undying allegiance to BlackBerry, it looks like the federal government could be ready to make a break from RIM. According to a Washington Post article published yesterday, a number of agencies within the federal government are questioning their attachment to the standard-issue BlackBerry devices, and allowing government employees to bring in their own preferred methods of communication -- among other things, Congress now allows the use of...

Nova Media's iCON 461 USB modem is unlocked for globe-trotting commitmentphobes
Unlocked 3G modems aren't something you see everyday. Sure, Zoom has been hawking the dongles for some time, but they're primarily of the tri-band variety -- Nova Media's iCON 461 does those one better by going quad-band and throwing in GPS for good measure. The globe-trotting "3G surfstick" supports 7.2Mbps HSPA on the 850, 900,1900, and 2100 bands (that would include AT&T here in the ol' US of A) and can...

Motorola Site Redesign Spills Shots Of XOOM 2, New Handsets, And A Watchphone?
Whoops! Looks like someone at Motorola didn't cover up their breadcrumbs while working on the next version of their Mobility site. Now, leaked site redesigns generally aren't something we cover, because, well, no one cares. This one's special, though. This one's fun. This one's jam-packed full of unannounced products. While the Mobility site is now back to its original, non-leaky form, PocketNow managed to nab some screenshots of all the good stuff....

See that there? That's a hope and a dream, both of which are seemingly situated in a nondescript box six feet beneath the surface of reality. U.S. Cellular Launches The HTC Merge, LG Genesis Coming June 9th
Just a quick update for those keeping tabs on the LG Genesis (which, up until Verizon decided not to offer it, was previously known as the "enV Pro") for U.S. Cellular: look for it to hit the shelves on June 9th for $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. In other news: that $149.99-after-rebate pricetag is the same thing they're asking for the HTC Merge, which hit their shelves as the sun came...

WHO Assessment Puts Cell Phone Use At "Possibly Carcinogenic"
The World Health Organization has just released the findings of a major literature review by leading scientists in the fields of cancer and radiation. Their conclusion? We need more data, but it's looking as if wireless communications are, at the very least, not not carcinogenic. The only positive data were too "limited" or "inadequate" to permit the group to say there's a definite link, though they saw fit to give it a...

Maps+ App Is Maps Plus Lots Of Other Stuff
At TechCrunch Disrupt NYC last week, Google's location boss Marissa Mayer pointed out that Google Maps for mobile traffic will surpass that of its desktop counterpart by June. Our dependence on mobile technology for where we are and where we're going seems to be growing by the minute, so its not too surprising to see a number of enhanced Map apps hit various app stores....

Pentagon says cyber attacks are acts of war: send us a worm, get a missle in return?
Well, the Pentagon is finally fed up with hackers picking on its buddies and foreign intelligence taking shots at its computer systems, and has decided that such cyber attacks can constitute an act of war. Of course, the powers that be won't be bombing you for simply sending them some spyware, but attempts to sabotage US infrastructure (power grids, public transit, and the like) may be met with heavy artillery....

Cellphones are dangerous/not dangerous: the WHO changes its mind
To say that experts generally don't agree about whether cellphone radiation can fry your brain is an understatement of massive proportions, but amazingly enough, the World Health Organization has come to a pseudo-conclusion. A group of 31 scientists from 14 countries working in the org's International Agency for Research on Cancer says that -- based on a survey of the literature -- those electromagnetic fields are as likely to be potentially...

You know, we haven't really thought much about Pantech since the ol' days of Helio (and the Pantech-made Helio Ocean.) We'd figured the company had decided that the U.S. mobile market and its current iPhone/Android-mindset was a bit too tough to crack, and had gone back to mainly focusing on slingin' their feature-phone wares in their home country of South Korea. Well, Pantech's back — and this time, they're rockin' Android. This morning,...

What's better than billions of transistors? Billions of miniature two-nanometer ones, leaving room for billions more.
